Last Tuesday, Capital Pride issued four "commitments," pledging to recognize the "ongoing genocide" in Gaza in opening remarks, integrate a boycott list into its sponsorship reviews, host a "queer Arab showcase" and call for a ceasefire, the immediate release of all hostages and increased humanitarian aid.
[...]
Haley Robinson, Capital Pride's grand marshal, also weighed in while attending CANFAR's brunch.
"I don't think the statement was meant for anybody to feel unwelcome," Robinson said, adding that it's necessary that Pride remains open to polarizing conversations — including ones about global conflicts.
"People have to remember that Pride isn't just about a parade and celebration," they said. "It's always been advocacy. It's always been a fight … so I think it's really important to continue to show your support for Palestinians and for other folks who are marginalized."

I would like to introduce my first ever fanzine: “Interview with a Special Agent: Uncensored Edition”. The one and only Leon S. Kennedy has generously allowed us to interview him regarding the… spicier aspects of his missions.
This zine is for audiences 18+ and is depicted from a trans lens, that means Leon has a vagina in this one. It is also highly pornographic! If that isn’t your thing, move along, but you have been warned.
Want to know the best part about this fanzine? You can colour it! That’s right, all of Leon’s most erotic experiences and memories will be laid out for you to visualize in your own colourful way!
I do not need crowdfunding for this project, and all copies will be produced out of my own pocket. I plan to sell each zine for $10 a piece, $3 of which goes towards CANFAR with every sale. This is entirely a labour of love. That being said, I have yet to figure out a date, as I must get these printed.
Special thanks to @skylitcreations for coming up with the title and helping me with the cover art. Please go check out their artwork and be sure to support them by way of ordering commissions!
Please ask questions about the zine, your question may be featured in the book itself! Please spread the word by reblogging!

A while back I was asked to clean out a filing cabinet of an office that had been providing mental health services for almost forty years. I purged a ton of old mental health resources, Cult Awareness checklists from the 80s and DARE pamphlets from the 90s, so they could be replaced with up-to-date stuff.
This one, I put aside and asked if I could take home. I was just reminded of it tonight.
Being a good person and caring about social justice today can be really overwhelming. It’s easy to feel hopeless, especially if you don’t have money or legitimacy. So I wanted to preserve this as a great example of good activism, and good mentoring teenagers to be good activists.
This kit is from 1994, during the AIDS epidemic. (Also known as the “AIDS Scare”, hence the name “AIDS Care”) The AIDS activist movement had done years of work already and had identified some very essential factors making the AIDS epidemic worse:
Not enough money was being devoted to AIDS medical research
The average person in North America had a very negative and prejudiced attitude to people with AIDS.
Not enough people knew about how AIDS was spread and that they were at risk, so they didn’t take adequate preventive measures, like using condoms or not sharing needles, and contracted the disease
So CANFAR, the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, produced this package, complete with a taped CBC TV special, and distributed it to high schools across Canada. Teachers were given the tools to educate and organize interested students to do three things:
Raise money for AIDS research, both by selling official merchandise and organizing fundraisers
Raise awareness about AIDS in a positive way
Educate their peers about AIDS, how it’s spread, who’s at risk, and how to stay safe.
This was really audacious. There was a lot of resistance to teaching children about AIDS, and this was a step further--recruiting them as AIDS activists! The proposed program included showing teenagers how to put a condom on a banana! FETCH ME MY SMELLING SALTS.
In some ways it’s a pretty unique mark of its time: in 1994, AIDS had been an epidemic in North America for more than a decade. The death toll was accelerating. People were desperate.
And then in 1995, the medical research had a breakthrough with protease inhibitors. Antiretroviral therapy worked. The death toll dropped sharply. And a lot of the desperation and panic went out of the room. Suddenly there wasn’t the same urgency for exposing high school students’ precious and delicate virgin eyes to the sight of latex-wrapped fruit, so it wasn’t worth fighting with parents. These days, CANFAR Clubs are still only in colleges and universities, so parental permission isn’t needed before uttering the words “safe sex.”
But I think it’s really useful for the Tumblr age as an example of how to do activism. Figuring out what the major factors making a problem worse are, and directly targeting them. Providing support and guidance for people to be different kinds of activists, whether organizing events, educating the public, or just attending an information system or spending money on a benefit concert or keychain. This workbook has already done the majority of the mental work that stresses us so much in the modern era: donate to these people, fundraise using these methods, put up posters using this information.
Following this model, we’d have tutorials teaching people how to make a custom t-shirt campaign to fundraise for other peoples’ medical emergencies, or guidelines about running workshops that teach people to recognize potentially abusive or exploitative relationships. Less flailing about “Why isn’t anybody talking about this?!” and more “Here’s what you can do.” Less heat, more light.

For here am I sitting in a tin canFar above the worldPlanet Earth is blueAnd there’s nothing I can do We found the unit empty, but it was very difficult to judge whether it had been abandoned for years, or just a few minutes. Alright! The results of the poll are in! Thank you so much for your responses. Also on the upcoming menu are keychains! I’ve already designed the Leon keychain, and I’m thinking about adding an Ada, an Ashley, a Luis, and maybe a Krauser. This will take a while, so please stay tuned if you’re interested.
I’ll post a preview of my Leon keychain. I’ve ordered a test batch of 3 from the manufacturer I’ve chosen, so when those arrive, I’ll post pictures.
Now, I’ve never sold anything related to my art, so I’m not entirely sure how I’m going to sell these. What I do know, though, is the price. I’ll be selling them for $10 CAD per unit, with 30% of the proceeds going towards CANFAR (Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research). If you have any other reputable charities to suggest, let me know, and I’ll also consider donating to them.
If you can, consider donating to them on your own time: https://canfar.com
I would also appreciate recommendations on websites to sell my work on, as again, I’ve never done so before. I’m also a bit of a boomer when it comes to this stuff, so help a 23 year old grandpappy out.

What a long day.
It began with me going to my orthodontist appointment in Markham, where I drove by myself for an extended distance on the highway for the first time. To be honest, it wasn’t bad at all. After I got my new retainers fitted, I was told that I had completed my final follow up appointment, and that I’d only ever see him again if I had any problems. Hooray!
When I got home, I was tasked with driving I back to her place. When we got there, she bought me bubble tea as promised, and we also went to the Metro there because she needed a few things. Seeing how close she lived to so many essential amenities and services made me envious, and solidified my desire to live in a dense area with everything I needed within a 5 minute walking distance.
When I returned home again, I worked on my individual inquiry project, performing some basic statistical analysis on my collected data in Excel. Although it took me a long time, it was satisfying to be able to do the basic statistics and see what my data holds. At around the same time, S notified me that I had won the CANFAR election! Although kind of scared at the daunting task of upholding that responsibility, I’m excited to help lead the club in the coming year.
In the night time, L, N, H, and I went to Chit-Chat-Play Food & Games in deep Scarborough. We had a fantastic time, and it was really great to be able to do something with them in a relaxed setting. It’s a shame that with our insurance premiums doubling this year that I’ll no longer be on the insurance policy beginning April 20, which means I can also no longer drive. Hopefully, obtaining my G class licence at the end of summer will lower my rates back down to something affordable and more importantly, reasonable.
I also finished the first season of Sex Education on Netflix today, and I must say that it was a pretty good season finale. A lot happened, and there were quite a few heartfelt moments where I definitely felt teary-eyed. I 100% recommend the show as it is well worth watching.
So yeah, I guess you can say today was a pretty great day.

Inside Last Night’s Stylish Evening With the Canadian Foundation for Aids Research at Bloor Street Entertains
Bloor Street Entertains, the annual fundraiser for the Canadian Foundation for Aids Research, has turned into one of the A+ fashion events of the Toronto social scene. The evening starts with intimate dinners in boutiques and other special settings in the Bloor/Yorkville neighbourhood, an area that was particularly devastated when Aids first hit in the ‘80s, taking the lives of so many hairstylists, makeup artists, window dressers and waiters who worked in the hood.
The night ends with a rousing dance party at the Four Seasons Hotel, which last night was a sea of sequins including the Beckerman twins decked out in Oscar gold. But it was the words spoken by CANFAR ambassador Muluba Habanyama as she roamed some of the venues that drove home the mission of the night: raising funds to support innovative research, awareness programs focused on prevention and testing, improving treatment and care and ending HIV stigma. After explaining some of the challenges she has faced since being diagnosed HIV positive when she was two, Habanyama, now 26, ended with a simple, “Thank you for helping me live.”
One guest at the Louis Vuitton dinner was so moved, he got up from the table and bought Habanyama a purse, before committing a sizable donation to the cause. Now that’s style.

2018/03/07 That Yossarian
