9-year-old Charlotte Sena’s kidnapping was ‘premeditated,’ family friend believes
It is clear that accused kidnapper Craig Ross Jr. planned in advance to snatch 9-year-old Charlotte Sena from the park she was visiting with her family over the weekend, a family friend claims.
“It’s obvious that this person had some premeditated aspirations,” Patrick Cane told “Fox & Friends” Tuesday morning, following Ross’ arraignment on kidnapping charges.
“I think he may have been aware of them,” he suggested of Ross’ knowledge of the Sena family.
Ross lived just two miles from Charlotte’s family home, according to an address listed on his vehicle registration, Gov. Kathy Hochul said at a news conference Monday night.
But it remains unclear whether Ross targeted Charlotte specifically or if he went after her at random when she was alone for a few minutes while riding her bike through Moreau Lake State Park, where she had been camping with her
Suspect Craig Ross Jr. is being held without bond.
Police will spend the day questioning Ross to see if he had been stalking Charlotte, if he is a pedophile or if he is simply a criminal who was trying to make money off her ransom, Newsweek reports.
They will also speak with his family and friends about his whereabouts and his character, while simultaneously comparing his DNA against a database of child abduction cases as he remains behind bars without bail.
Cops have confirmed that Ross is not a registered sex offender, but a report in the Saratogian claims a man by the same name and age was arrested and charged with criminal obstruction of breathing in 2017.

How Extractivism and Neoliberal Environmentalism Cause Migration and Land Conflicts in Guatemala
--
On June 2 [2017], Guatemalan police and military carried out the eviction of Q’eqchi Maya residents of the community of Laguna Larga in the Laguna de Tigre region of the country. Days later, the refugees from the eviction arrived in the Mexican state of Campeche. The refugees formed a camp five kilometers from the border with Guatemala. The eviction of this Indigenous community points to how extractivism and neoliberal environmentalism are key causes of migration and land conflicts in the region.
“These are the conditions that allow us to speak of a humanitarian emergency, which endangers the lives and integrity of girls, boys and, in general, of women and all the people there,” wrote representatives from four migration collectives in Mexico, including Voces Mesoamericanas and La 72, Hogar Refugio para Personas Migrantes, in a statement to the press. [...] The eviction operation reportedly included over 1,500 members of the police and the military. [...] Independent media reports this number could reach as high as 700, and include primarily women, children, and elderly. [...] Guatemala’s National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP) accused the families of usurping the land in the protected forests. But as Luis Solano, an investigator for the Guatemalan magazine, El Observador, points out, the evictions are more about business interests in the region than about protecting the environment.
--
[Indigenous and campesino dispossession from eco-tourism and academic archaeology]
“For many years there have been an entrance into the region by Guatemala’s most powerful economic interests in order to protect the archaeological sites, and promote tourism there,” Solano said. “These groups work with CONAP, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), and various Non-Governmental Organizations to protect the region, and to construct their grand tourism and archaeological projects there.” [...]
The establishment of the protected areas in Northern Peten did not occur until 1989, and led to the creation of the Lacandon, the Maya Biosphere, and Laguna del Tigre protected areas. The communities that were already established within these regions were then threatened with evictions. The expansion of agro-industry drives farmers deeper and deeper into the protected areas, and the crisis in the Laguna del Tigre region has been marked by the presence of petroleum interests.
The protection of the forests is also being militarized. In 2011, Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom established the military unit referred to as the Green Battalion to combat illegal settlements and the destruction of forests in the region around Laguna del Tigre. [...]
--
[Internal migration and dispossession from US and Canadian extraction corporations]
Since the Spanish invasion in 1524, Guatemala’s Indigenous peoples have suffered massive dispossession of territory. The best lands were taken for the production of export crops. This dispossession intensified following the liberal reforms of 1871, which spurred the arrival of thousands of Germans and Italians interested in the production of coffee. By the early 20th century, US-based companies such as United Fruit Company began to arrive due to the region’s potential for the production of bananas. By the 1940s, the United Fruit company had gained significant influence, and even controlling the country’s railroads. [...] The d!sc0urse of migration to the United States generally leaves out the process of internal migration. The dispossession of land for corporate interests leaves campesinos without land. [...] As a result, the eviction in the PetEn highlights one of the forces that drives both internal and external migration. [...]
The rise of export crops such as sugar cane and African palm oil, as well as mining and large-scale hydro-energy interests, have led to the rapid re-concentration of lands into the hands of a few wealthy land owners. It is now estimated that 83 percent of arable lands in Guatemala is controlled by roughly three percent of the population.
“In the last years [since 2010], the number of extractive projects have increased exponentially,” Enrique Vidal Olascoaga of Voces Mesoamericanas, a group of activists focused on migration research, told Toward Freedom. “We recognize now, that more than ever, the extractive model from the United States and Canada is one of the principal causes of the internal and external displacement and expulsion of people.”
“For example, mining projects, hydro-electric, and monoculture have become far worse in the last seven years, since the beginning of the free trade agreements,” Olascoaga explains. “Together with historic discrimination against Indigenous peoples, campesinos, and people of African descent, there is a convergence of this violence within migration.”

DVD Review: Shark Bait
Shark Bait collects six schlocky shark movies - Swamp Shark (2011), Ghost Shark (2013), Zombie Shark (2015), Ozark Sharks (2016), Mississippi River Sharks (2017), and Santa Jaws (2018) - along with a bonus alligator flick - Alligator Alley (2013) - for good measure. The fin-tastic DVD set is available now from Mill Creek Entertainment in celebration of Shark Week.
Although Mill Creek presents the features in no discernible order, I opted to view them in chronological order to see if there were any patterns or growth over the seven years spanned. They're all cheesy, but it's interesting to see which of the movies embrace their inherent absurdity, which makes them easier to swallow. Case in point: Sharknado became a cultural phenomenon because it went all-in on the concept.
In viewing all seven of the movies over a short span of time, the formula is apparent. A cast with a couple of celebrities past their prime and a bunch of wooden, inexperienced actors play one-dimensional characters that spout unnatural dialogue (usually with an obligatory Jaws reference) in between animal attacks accomplished with laughable CGI.
Another fascinating fact is that a mere two directors are responsible for all seven movies. Griff Furst (Lake Placid 3) was in the director's chair for Swamp Shark, Ghost Shark, and Alligator Alley, while Misty Talley helmed the other four. I imagine making these movies is good fun, although it likely becomes tedious after a few. But their work was clearly successful enough to warrant repeat hirings, so more power to them.
Swamp Shark is an example of a pre-Sharknado creature feature that takes itself far too seriously. An animal smuggler accidentally releases a rare shark with a virtually impenetrable exoskeleton into a Louisiana river. Despite the swampland being infested with the added threat of alligators, the opportunity for shark vs. gator action is sadly missed. While the shark is predominately created with crummy CGI, a couple of shots admirably utilize a good, old-fashioned rubber head.
Kristy Swanson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) toplines the film as the person tasked with stopping the flesh-hungry shark before it wreaks havoc at the annual Gator Fest. The cast also includes Robert Davi (The Goonies), D.B. Sweeney (Spawn), and Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs. After years of independent and made-for-television work, Swamp Shark cinematographer Lorenzo Senatore recently shot the new Hellboy.
Ghost Shark is a strong contender for the most entertaining movie in the set. It starts with a practical, fake great white in the prologue until it's killed, after which point it becomes the titular, translucent Ghost Shark. It can materialize in any water, and its appearances become increasingly more outrageous, from the ocean and a swimming pool to water pipes and a slip and slide. I won't give away the most ludicrous highlight, but it's a rare unforgettable moment in a Syfy movie.
Levity is key, which is why the last act becomes more tiresome when it focuses on the why and the how, although I appreciate that its mythology is taken seriously despite the silly premise. Mackenzie Rosman (7th Heaven) stars as a girl with a personal vendetta against the specter. Richard Moll (House) brings surprising nuance to the role of the alcoholic lighthouse keeper with a dark past. Thomas Francis Murphy (The Walking Dead) plays the small town’s sheriff.
Zombie Shark (also known as Shark Island) finds a shark - named Bruce, of course - escaping from the scientific facility in which it was the subject of experimentation. It proceeds to find food on the shore of a nearby, secluded island. The shark spreads its undead virus to other sharks and, eventually, to humans. There's no shortage of voracious fish action, including a first victim that caught me off guard; a rarity in these oft-predictable films.
Cassie Steele (Degrassi: The Next Generation) stars as one of four friends on the quaint island for a getaway, and Jason London (Dazed and Confused) co-stars as the facility's head of security hunting down the shark. Although not a "name" actor, Roger J. Timber provides solid comedic relief as an islander who serves as host to the guests.
Ozark Sharks follows a family's long-weekend trip to an Arkansas cabin that holds a special place in the grandmother's heart, only to find that bull sharks have invaded the nearby lake. This happens while the town is gearing up for a big firework festival. Much like Zombie Shark, the first kill is a welcome surprise, but the film culminates with an unnecessarily melodramatic finale.
Allisyn Ashley Arm (A.P. Bio) stars as the angst-ridden lead who becomes the final girl of sorts. Thomas Francis Murphy is back, this time playing the soothsaying owner of the local bait shop. He owns an arsenal of homemade weaponry that adds a dash of fun to the bland proceedings, including a giant air canon, an oar turned into a high-voltage cattle prod, a double-bladed katana, and a crossbow that shoots dear antlers.
Santa Jaws not only has the best title, but it may very well be the strongest effort in the set. Although it lacks the star power of the other movies, it offers a radical deviation from the creature feature formula; it's a coming-of-age movie. When a dorky teen boy receives a magic pen that turns its drawings into a reality, he uses it on his comic book, Santa Jaws. Soon there's a killer shark with glowing, red eyes, a candy cane horn, and a Santa hat on its dorsal fin targeting his family amidst their Christmas gathering.
The result is something like Jaws meets Krampus by way of Ruby Sparks, if it were produced by the Hallmark Channel. Shark excitement takes a backseat in this one, and there’s a whole lot of unintentional camp present, but the youth-driven approach to the material is a breath of fresh air. With no hackneyed military or science roles, the characters feel more natural and developed.
Though not quite as far a deviation as Santa Jaws, Mississippi River Sharks spices things up a clever meta element. Jason London plays a fictionalized version of himself, the star of the Shark Bite franchise. He's the celebrity guest at a podunk town's fishing competition, and his inflated ego leads him to believe that he's the most qualified person to save the day when sharks start attacking. Unlike his blase role in Zombie Shark, London lights up the screen in this supporting role.
The real hero is Cassie Steele's Tara, but it's Dean J. West (The Hunt) who shines when London is absent. In the comedic role of Tara's friend, Wyatt, he's an overzealous Shark Bite fanboy who relishes the opportunity to live out his favorite movie... even if he doesn't know what he's doing. A brief cameo from Jeremy London (Mallrats) - Jason's twin brother - furthers the meta aspect.
Alligator Alley is included as a bonus film. Thomas Francis Murphy plays another pivotal role, this time as a bayou redneck who brews chemically-enhanced moonshine. He dumps a string of bad batches into the river, mutating the local alligator population to the point where they can shoot spikes from their tails. He has a long-standing family feud with another local Cajun family, with two star-crossed lovers - one played by Jordan Hinson (Eureka) - caught in the middle, but they must band together to stop the gators.
The first half of the film is a bit dull, as you're essentially waiting for all of these annoying characters to get eaten, but the pacing picks up when concept that can only be described as weregators is introduced. The left-field plot point is so preposterous that it makes the film vastly more interesting. And maybe it's because I had just watched six shark movies and water is hard to animate, but the CGI isn't half bad considering the time and budget.
Shark Bait crams all seven films onto two discs. Compression is apparent in every movie (particularly with murky underwater footage, for whatever reason), and of course there are no special features, but it still beats watching them with Syfy's incessant commercial interruptions. Each one clocks in at under 90 minutes, so even the poorly-paced movies - of which there are several - are over before you know it.
Although far from high art, the best films in the collection - Santa Jaws, Ghost Shark, and Mississippi River Sharks - subvert expectations by mixing up the trite formula, and they don't shy away from levity. If you're lamenting the lack of a new Sharknado film this year - the franchise concluded with its sixth installment last year - fill the shark-sized gap in your heart with the Shark Bait collection.
Shark Bait is available now on DVD via Mill Creek Entertainment.

Lyoray Week 2019 Prompt: Aftermath AO3 | FF.Net
You Left Me Behind
Summary: All Gray remembered was Lyon trying to cover his face as he screamed out Gray's name, then it was just a jumble of loud, jarring noises and pain followed by blissful darkness. Gray had woken up at Mass General Hospital days later with both knees broken from the impact and a new liver, Lyon's dying gift, transplanted inside of him. Now it was time to say goodbye.
Gray got out of the car slowly, not that he did anything quickly these days. Natsu had been kind enough to take the day off from work to bring him to the cemetery knowing how important this was to him.
However, now that Gray was here he couldn't seem to move past the front gate. He heard the car door shut behind him. Heard Natsu's steps as they neared him, felt Natsu's hand squeeze his shoulder.
"Do you want me to stay with you?" Natsu asked quietly as he hugged him from behind, putting his head on Gray's shoulder. "I know this is hard for you, tell me what you need."
Gray squeezed the hands that were clasped around his middle gratefully. It was what he needed, just a little push to get him going. This was a visit that had been a long time coming, he'd kept putting it off for so many reasons, but there were a lot of things he needed to get off his chest, and unless he told them to Lyon directly they would feel meaningless.
He took a shaky breath and leaned on his cane to steady himself. "No, I can do it."
Just a few months ago he would have barked that out or lashed out at Natsu for assuming he wasn't capable of doing something but he'd finally lost the chip on his shoulder, and a lot of that was thanks to Natsu.
"I brought you a chair, I thought you might get tired standing there for a long time. Let me at least put it there for you, and I'll come back to the car."
Gray turned around slowly and captured Natsu's lips in a gentle kiss. "Thank you."
Natsu smiled at him, touching his forehead to Gray's before letting go and grabbing the chair that he'd set down. They walked together quietly, following Loke's instructions to Lyon's grave. Loke had offered to come as well, but some of the things Gray needed to get off his chest were too personal for him to share with anyone but Lyon.
True to his word, Natsu set the chair down and after making sure Gray was settled walked back towards the car. He'd come back and say his own words when he retrieved the chair.
Gray held on to his cane tightly, staring at the headstone Loke had so lovingly picked out. There was a large bouquet of roses in a vase that was part of the base, letting him know Loke had been here recently.
Lyon Vastia September 5, 1997 - September 14, 2017 Beloved son, friend, and fiancé Though you will be missed, we know you'll be watching over us from your place in the stars
Gray smiled at the message, that must have been Loke as well. He'd always been a nut for anything to do with astrology.
"Hi, I guess," Gray ran his fingers through his hair not sure what to do with his hands. It was stupid to feel this nervous talking to someone who wasn't even there. "I'm not really sure how to do this. I've only really ever visited my parents' graves."
He looked around to make sure no one was close enough to listen to him. Once he was satisfied, he cleared his throat and began speaking.
"I've never been good at long flowery speeches, so I guess I'll get to the point," Gray immediately tensed up, and had to remind himself that this was the reason he was here. "Was it my fault? Did I distract you by talking?"
He remembered the car ride well. Lyon had been driving, they'd both been tired but excited to make the long drive to Boston. They'd been scouted and offered a spot in the Boston Bruins training camp. If they performed well they'd have a real shot at playing on an NHL team. It was a dream they'd been working towards since they met in their first Squirt League thirteen years ago.
"We were so close, Lyon!" Gray didn't attempt to hide his frustration, he was sure Lyon could relate, "I heard they replaced us with Invel and some other guy I'd never heard of. God, Invel was such a dick, remember?"
No one had been able to satisfactorily explain how the crash happened. The other driver had been drunk, that was true, but Lyon hadn't attempted to brake or veer away from the oncoming car. All Gray remembered was Lyon trying to cover his face as he screamed out Gray's name, then it was just a jumble of loud, jarring noises and smells and pain followed by blissful darkness. Gray had woken up at Mass General Hospital days later with both knees broken from the impact and a new liver, Lyon's dying gift, transplanted inside of him.
The tears finally started to come, "I see Loke every day, Erza offered him a job at the house while he got himself together. I know he doesn't blame me for what happened, but I do. I was in the car with you. Why did I survive when you didn't? You had so much more to live for and Loke, he's so sad, even though he doesn't like to show it. He misses you, and he's stuck taking care of me. How fucked up is that?"
God, I was so angry at you for leaving me behind. You were the one I always measured myself up against and with you gone, I was so lost. What was I supposed to do without you? I know I never said it, but you were my best friend."
"Damn it!" Gray wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, although it didn't help much. These had been a long time coming, and he knew he'd have to let them all out before he could truly move on.
"I know I gave you a hard time about Loke, and even though you never complained, I'm sorry. I didn't really mean it. I think I was a little in love with you for a while there, but I was too stupid to realize it. Seeing how happy you were with him, it- it hurt in a way I didn't quite understand."
To his amusement he found himself avoiding looking at the headstone as if he thought Lyon could judge him through it somehow.
"I really wish you could have had the life you were planning, and I promise you that I won't waste mine. I'm only alive because of you, although it feels weird knowing that a part of you is inside of me."
Gray chuckled through his tears, "Couldn't resist saving my ass one last time, could you? Gotta admit that threw me for a loop at first."
Gray showed the cane to the headstone, "I've had to slow down, and I'll never be able to play professionally. At first, I believed my life was over, but then I'd think of you and how you would never give up and well, I couldn't let you be better than me could I?
Natsu has helped a lot too, he got me to put skates on again for the first time since the accident. I taught him how to ice skate, can you imagine that? Me, ice skating for fun and trying to show someone else, I have to believe you laughed at that one if you were watching. He's trying to convince me to start training and maybe work up to joining some sort of pickup league, but I don't really know if I want to play hockey without you."
You were the best friend I could have asked for, and I can only hope that I was the same for you. I— I loved you, Lyon and I miss you every day. There, I said it."
"I can almost hear you laughing at me you know," Gray snorted as he got up from the chair. "I'm sorry it took me so long to come see you, I promise I'll be by more often, and... I'll watch over Loke for you," He paused before adding a teary, "Goodbye Lyon. Thank you... for everything."
Gray grabbed the hockey puck he'd put in his coat pocket that morning and placed it on top of the headstone. It was the first goal he'd gotten past Lyon back when they were ten, and he'd held on to it ever since. "Someday, I know we'll get to play again."
He turned around and walked back to the entrance, Natsu already walking towards him. Gray hugged him tightly, fully aware of how lucky he was to be alive and have Natsu by his side.
Gray let Natsu go pay his respects and continued his walk towards the car, his mind caught up in memories of two young boys who's fondest wish had been to become professional hockey players.
Visiting Lyon's grave had made him feel a bit lighter, but he knew some of the sadness he felt would never leave him, Lyon had been too big a part of his life for him to ever be able to forget.
Natsu put the chair in the trunk and got in the driver's seat, turning his head towards Gray. "Home?"
Gray smiled and leaned his body as close to Natsu's as the middle console would allow, putting his hand behind Natsu's neck and nudging him forward for a kiss. Natsu looked surprised but followed along, allowing himself to be kissed.
"Let's go out to lunch," Gray suggested, "I think it's time I took you out on a proper date, don't you?"
It was time for him to stop hiding in his house. Yes, he'd had to let go of his biggest dream, but that didn't mean he couldn't make new ones. Gray would never stop missing Lyon, but he could move forward and live the best life he could, for both of them.
A/N: This kind of goes with a story I'm writing. I've only got the first chapter done, but I always knew I wanted this to happen, even though it didn't really fit into the scope of the story itself. So I decided to go ahead and write it out for Lyoray Week

One of television’s most evil supervillains made his Stern Show debut on Tuesday as actor Cory Michael Smith sat down with Howard to talk his role on the Fox series “Gotham.” Cory plays Edward Nygma (a.k.a. the Riddler), a mad forensic scientist who wreaks havoc on Gotham City years before its caped crusader Batman has begun fighting crime.
Many men before Cory have suited up as the Riddler on TV and in films, including comedian Jim Carrey in 1995’s “Batman Forever.” But even though Cory considers himself to be one of Jim’s biggest fans and has seen nearly all of his movies, he told Howard he somehow knew growing up not to watch Carrey and his take on the Riddler character.
“If there is a God, that’s God being like, ‘Cory, you’re not gonna watch this because if you do you’re gonna impersonate it.’ Because I spent my life impersonating him,” Cory said of Carrey.
Cory may not be able to comment on Carrey’s Riddler performance, but when Jim called into the Stern Show in 2017, he praised Cory’s acting on “Gotham,” saying he catches the show occasionally and is always impressed by his work — a compliment that no doubt meant the world to Cory.
Rather than base his Riddler off of anyone else’s prior performance, Cory told Howard he instead constructed his character off of someone he went to high school with. He recalled how that classmate inexplicably carried all of his text books with him throughout the day despite students having lockers, adding that while this kid was unquestionably brilliant there seemed to be something just a little off about him.
“He would walk on the front of his feet … it was like his books led him everywhere,” Cory explained. “I just physically modeled the character after him.”
For his “Gotham” audition, however, Cory was kept in the dark about which part he was trying out for. “They didn’t tell us the characters we were auditioning for,” he told Howard, explaining he wasn’t even told the show was a Batman origin series.
“I didn’t even audition for the casting directors, I auditioned for their assistants,” Cory admitted, chalking that up to not having a long list of credits under his name up to that point. 2014, the year “Gotham” debuted, proved to be a turning point in Cory's career, though. He co-starred in the short film “Dog Food” with Amanda Seyfried, acted alongside Kristen Stewart in the feature film “Camp X-Ray,” and played Kevin Coulson in the HBO miniseries “Olive Kitteridge,” co-starring Frances McDormand and Bill Murray.
The only roles Cory was really known for before “Gotham” were his performance in the off-Broadway play “Cock” and his 2013 Broadway debut in the stage adaptation of “Breakfast at Tiffany's.” He appeared nude every night in that production along with “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke.
“We were naked in a tub together on stage,” Cory told Howard.
Despite the show’s nudity, ticket sales were less than producers had hoped for. Photos of Emilia without any clothes on also surfaced in the newspaper, which Cory said he still considers rather suspect and isn’t sure whether they were taken by an audience member or one of the show’s publicists in a last-ditch effort to sell seats.
No matter the case, Cory said he and Emilia remain friends and called her “one of the loveliest, loveliest humans” he’s ever worked with.
Next up for Cory are two feature films due out later in 2018: Neil Armstrong biopic “First Man” starring Ryan Gosling and AIDS drama “1985” which Cory also executive produced.
His steady gig remains on TV, though, and he told Howard he’s nothing but grateful for his “Gotham” role and having the kind of character progression he does on the series.
“I’ve been very lucky that it’s been a slow, slow burn for me,” Cory said. “This is like longform television — the gift for an actor.”
Starring in anything to do with comic book characters comes with a built-in, fervent fanbase. Cory has only attended a few of the popular conventions, but he told Howard being there has literally brought him to tears.
“I get really emotional while I’m at them,” Cory revealed. “It’s incredible the joy that you’re experiencing from some of these people … I don’t know how to express enough gratitude to them for spending money to, like, show up and be there and so, I just start, like, crying. It’s really embarrassing.”
Like most of his fans, Cory is hopeful his Riddler character will acquire his signature cane soon. After all, his on-camera foe and off-camera friend Robin Lord Taylor gets to have a cane as Oswald Cobblepot (a.k.a. the Penguin).
“We can’t have a cane fight until I get a cane,” Cory joked.
One wardrobe addition fans cannot look forward to, though, is any of the skintight suits worn by the Riddlers of yesteryear.
“I get a lot of fans being like, ‘When’s the spandex coming?’ And I’m like, ‘Never!’” Cory said with a laugh.

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ!
October 1, 2017, my 12-year old brother, Lucas, began falling down at random. It was a Sunday. My family and I all just thought he was trying to get out of church and chores. We were all wrong. The next day he woke up dizzy, but not like the world is spinning dizzy. You know how you feel on one of those full body rafts in the pool? Yeah, that’s how he felt, constantly, for over a year now. He was falling in the halls at school, out of his bed at night, downstairs, out of his chair. He wasn’t sleeping, and when he slept, he slept for way too long. His body was in a state of constant fatigue. He had to use a cane or wheelchair to get around anywhere so that way he didn’t fall or could at least control his falls, and it’s still this bad.
Eventually, after about a month, my mom set him up for homebound school, and she took a 3-month long leave of absence from work. Those 3 months were a living hell for her. About 2-years ago she had tachycardia. It took doctors over a year to diagnose her with it. She was in a constant state of dizziness, much like my brother's state, and her heart had an extra palpitation. So, her knowing what she went through, she got Lucas into a pediatric cardiologist. All of his tests came back negative. The cardiologist said to see a neurologist. The neurology tests came negative. Off to an infectious disease doctor. Test results negative… and on, and on, and on.
Finally, we’re at Detroit Children's Hospital. He spent 3 nights there. My mom never left his side. My Dad and I went out one night and brought them a meal that wasnt hospital food. It was awful, seeing my brother with wires to his heart, brain, stomach, everywhere. My 12-year old brother, pale, bags under his eyes. He didn’t deserve this. He was such a happy kid. Sadly, no doctor saw Lucas fall, so they said his anxiety was causing it, and to see a psychiatrist. We are never going to that hospital again.
Well, he saw the psychiatrist. She diagnosed him with depression, mild anxiety, and OCD. He was given a prescription for Prozac and was sent on his way. My brother also went to a sleep specialist and a neurological chiropractor. He was given a sleep-aid and an anti-seizure medication to help with his dizziness- I know, weird right...- by the sleep specialist. Coming on March 2017, mom was back part-time at work, and her boss was aware that if something were to happen at home with Lucas, that my mom would leave. My mom took off a few days as they had finally gotten into Children's Hospital in Cincinnati, the best pediatric hospital in the country.
They were there for 3 days. Again, my Dad and I were back at home in a sheer state of agony, wanting to be with them, and desperate for answers. The end of the second day we got a call from my mom. He had been diagnosed with a Neurological Disorder, mild narcolepsy, and POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardic Syndrome: blood volume changes when standing up). We were so happy we knew what it was and how to fix it. Although, when we received all the forms from their visit, it never mentioned any of those things. It only said Anxiety…
We were pissed, but we were going to go off of what the doctors said to my mom and brothers faces. My brother started going to Neurological Therapy once a week in Troy. Then my dad found someone with a similar practice in Burton. So we went to check them out. They had him on a sensory table for 1 hour a day for 10 days. He had music playing in one ear, was in a dark room, and had to watch a light that changed colors while the table moved up and down. Following this, he had to do something similar(without the table) at home, 20 minutes a day for 8 days. It seemed to help. There was another practice below this doctor. It is something called vision therapy. They treat kids who have sight disabilities. This doctor believed that Lucas’ eyes and brain weren’t communicating, so Lucas started going to vision therapy as well, once a week. Throughout the following months, Lucas started going to neurological therapy more than vision, and in August he started going to vision therapy more than neurological.
Summer months were his good months. He ended up going to summer camp with his boy scout troop and came back practically like his old self. He was getting outside, riding his new bike that was lower to the ground than his previous one (I can’t remember what it is called), he was swimming, and honestly practically his old self. Then, he broke his foot jumping out of the pool. That was a huge setback, but he still managed our family trip up north. He still cliff dove off of Presque Isle, he hiked back to the large falls of Canyon Falls, he was able to walk around all of Northern Michigan Universities campus(the trip was to hunt down 4-year universities for me), and he jumped through waves when we went on our family trip to Lake Michigan.
Up until October 1st, 2018 his dizziness level was in between a 2 and a 5, maybe a 6 if he was really bad. But, on the one year mark, he fell 5 times before it was time to leave for school, his dizziness was at a 9, and my mom kept him home from school. He hasn’t been to school since. He’s failing all of his classes, and practically ready to file for homebound learning services, again. He’s 13 now. His life has practically been taken from him. He’s extremely depressed, rarely leaves the house, has gained weight. 13-year old boys are supposed to be worried about puberty, video games, school, and girls. Not whether or not they’re going to be “special needs” for the rest of their life.
My Parents put together this fundraiser. We have paid 10 grand out of pocket as insurance covers basically none of his treatments. Now, we are going to see more doctors, so the costs are increasing. We aren’t asking much. Even prayers and good vibes work. Any help you can give us greatly appreciated. ❤️

A good Star Wars example?
KOTOR 2.
If you know the story, the big old juggernaut of the first game came out and went huge. High demand for a sequel.
Well, the sequel was ambitious as hell. And Lucasarts demanded it be put out by December 2004. So maybe 18 month development. The game in vanilla is ambitious but it's also buggy as hell. Sidequests that don't get resolves, several plot holes, Characters you can't influence, a weird ending that is a surreal dungeon crawl...
Now, some crazy modders pulled game files to try and fix the bugs and realized that...hey, there is a ton of cut content here and restoration of it would patch the plot holes and generally kick ass.
The Sith Lords Restoration project cane out in 2017! As in, thirteen years after the initial game.
And I played it. It took a game I could only manage a couple plays through and showed off all that ambition to make an epic of deconstruction that is truly worthy of being considered a GOAT among Legends.
Gen X waited from 1983 to 1999, sixteen years, between OT and Prequels. Heck, I remember people camped outside the cinema in tents and with sofas. We know how to wait if the wait's worth it
Being Hyper Critical Of Star Wars and Kenobi Is Good
So let me say that I’m originally a Berserk fan (also a jojo fan too more so).
And if there’s one thing about Berserk fans, it’s that they are absolutely hyper critical of every animated adaption of Berserk ever made. Not even the OG one is safe. Even though it’s respected and loved, it’s never above people saying something about it.
Keep in mind, it’s nearly impossible to properly adapt Berserk currently. The manga is too complex
These are just two examples. As you can see, they’re highly detailed. We do not currently have the technology to adapt this into a live action or anime properly. Everybody knows this.
Because of this, there’s been 3 tries.
The OG 90s Anime, which is beloved because even tho it a bit janky, it’s good and does what it needs to.
The 2012 movies that looked good character model wise but the CGI was heinous and it did subtract from it. Granted, when the movies are beautiful, they’re beautiful. Imo, bitches would be better received without the terrible cgi.
And the despised and hated 2016 anime adaption. Shit was so trash. Shit was so garbage. It was badly cgi South Park and bitches dunked on it. Also, they white washed Casca and everybody got so fucking irate that they changed it. Good times.
However, I say this to make y’all understand that the fandom wasn’t cutting down these attempts out of hatred for berserk. They were critical because of love.
Bitches love Berserk, so they only want the best berserk adaptions possible. If that means berserk don’t get animated properly until 2060, I can tell you mfs will watch it because that’s how deep this love is.
Hell, I’ll watch the perfect berserk adaption in 2060 with em.
Now, I understand that the berserk fandom and Star Wars fandom are built different. One is based solely off a manga. One relies on multi media to tell its story. However, you should still expect the very best from Star Wars.
You’re not a selfish person or “man baby” if you want everything Star Wars releases to be perfect. You’re someone who gives a damn and doesn’t want people’s first impressions of a story you love to be met with shrugs.
Will there be a slow up of content when you demand high quality? Yes. You won’t get shows every year, or a new product regularly.
But when you do get it, it’ll be something beautiful that impacts you and everyone else will rally around it because they’ll say “I know the reputation this has of being great so I want to see what’s up”
This is how I got interested in berserk all those years ago, I heard all the praise surrounding it and saw the panels and knew I had to see what was up.
I’ll always be grateful that I did because berserk is up there with jojo for me.
There’s nothing wrong with expecting the utmost perfection of series you like. You should do this. This doesn’t mean you hate Star Wars or even the series you’re critiquing. It just means you see the potential in it and want it to live up to those standards

The media dedicated much time and energy to covering online abuse, towards women in particular, during the Democratic Primary. The vitriol was, and remains, disturbing. Posting a photo of a female campaign surrogate on Facebook, a man wrote, “Every time i see this… creature on CNN, I want to reach through the tv screen and choke her… (I don’t believe in hurting women… but i’m not sure if this is one).” Another surrogate, a black woman, has been called everything from a “bitch” to a slave to a “hood rat.” One man tweeted, “I hope you and your family die,” and another person told her to “just end her misery. A pill cocktail will do the trick…” There has even been actual physical violence against women: Two women were hit because of their allegiance to a candidate, one of them, a young woman of color, was struck by an older white man with his hand and cane.
Readers may be familiar with the term “Bernie Bro,” but they might be surprised to learn that every attack cited above was made by Clinton supporters against Sanders supporters. Though the abuse of Sanders supporters has been ignored, the Bernie Bro trope is as strong as ever.
The term has been employed by Hillary Clinton in her new book, What Happened, (and in follow up interviews) to explain her loss: “Some of his supporters, the so-called Bernie Bros, took to harassing my supporters online.” The tale is even serving as evidence of a Russian propaganda effort to inflate Sanders support online, which was discussed in a closed door Senate Intelligence Committee meeting with Twitter representatives earlier this month. A Politico piece framed the bots as part of the “toxic” online environment attributed to Bernie Bros: “Clinton supporters say they sensed early on that Twitter would be surprisingly toxic terrain.”
And the term is popping up in the current backlash to Bernie Sanders’ participation in the Women’s Convention slated to take place in Detroit at the end of the month. The event is organized by women—many of whom are of color—who planned last March’s Women’s March, which brought out an estimated 5.25 million people in one of the largest (if not the largest ever) single-day protests in U.S. history. It will be keynoted by Rep. Maxine Waters (CA-D), the most senior of the 12 black women in Congress. The 40-plus speakers announced include black, Latino, queer, Asian-American, Arab-American, Native American, Muslim, and/ or queer women. All but two speakers are women. One of those other two is Bernie Sanders—currently the most popular politician in the United States.
The responses to this news have included a change.org petition to “Remove Bernie Sanders from opening the Women’s Convention,” a #BoycottWomensConvention hashtag, condemnation from several writers, criticism from Emily’s List, condemnation from Joy Reid and Neera Tanden, who unfollowed the Women’s March account, a Twitter poll from The New York Times, and clarification from organizers. Writer Lauren Duca sarcastically asked, “Why not just have the #WomensConvention open with a choir of Bernie Bros harmonizing the word “actually”?” An ElleOpEd, “Some Advice for Bernie on Speaking at the Women’s Convention,” which laments that the “convention’s headline speaker is Bernie Sanders, who, it so happens, identifies as a cisgender man,” invokes the “Bernie Bro” term twice. (Sanders is not, in fact, the opening speaker.) The term has been revisited in “reported” pieces, not merely tweets and opeds.
Of course, individual Sanders supporters hurled vitriol at Hillary Clinton and her fans. But there is no empirical evidence that it was worse than the abuse in the opposite direction. In fact, independent observers have shown the difference between the two camps to be negligible or, in the case of one study, demonstrated that Clinton backers were actually more aggressive.
The Genealogy of a Pejorative
From the beginning, the Bernie Bro narrative used a striking double standard: the most vocal and abusive Sanders supporter was framed as yet another example of a systemic problem. Abuse from Clinton supporters was either ignored or dismissed as isolated incidents.
The actual “Bernie Bro” term first appeared in a light-hearted piece which was quick to point out that “Berniebro is not every Bernie Sanders supporter. Sanders’s support skews young, but not particularly male.” By early 2016, however, through repetition and a feedback loop of articles which cited each other and repeated random anecdotes, a handful of screenshots, misinformation, and comments by Clinton partisans and surrogates, the Bernie Bro—to mean a serious sexist assault by Sanders supporters on Hillary Clinton, her campaign, and American politics—was born.
A BBC piece titled, “Bernie Sanders supporters get a bad reputation online,” published on January 28th 2016, opened with a tweet in which New Yorker critic Emily Nussbaum described harassment from an account she thought belonged to a Sanders supporter. The harasser, however, was actually a right winger posing as a GOP congressman who doesn’t actually exist, and Nussbaum corrected the error. The BBC never did. The piece distorted the considerate response from the Sanders campaign’s Mike Casca (“If you support @berniesanders, please follow the senator’s lead and be respectful when people disagree with you”) as an admission of guilt, claiming “even representatives for the Sanders campaign felt compelled to address what was happening online.”
This flawed and evidence-free article was immediately parroted by a Mashable piece (headlined “The bros who love Bernie Sanders have become a sexist mob” ), which corroborated the phenomenon by citing two Clinton supporters and one unnamed chief of staff for an unnamed Clinton-endorsing member of Congress, all of whom agreed Bernie Bros were a problem. The article also entered into evidence two screenshots of Bernie Bro Facebook comments, though one of the alleged bros was actually a woman.

@autisticminyard tagged me in a thingie where you list the good things that happened this year, going month-by-month. Some stuff was obvious (NaNo! my job!) but some months were really hard and I had to dig through my blog archives to see what I was up to. There were also some things that happened over multiple months, which I’ve listed at the beginning. (That wasn’t part of the original post, it was just my idea.)
Some overall stuff: I got a lot of writing done this year! I did NaNo, but I also worked a lot on fic, as well as some original stuff. I also auditioned to be in the dance concert and got cast in a really cool piece that’s all about individuality, so I’m allowed to modify stuff so I can use my cane. On a related note, I took ballet classes during the summer. I was in with professional dancers (I am Not That) and I very quickly learned how to be okay with sucking at stuff. (2016 was the year of Actually Thinking My Creative Endeavors Are Good, and then 2017 was the year of it Also Being Okay If They Suck Though.) I think I also got a bit better at being organized and cleaning up my own messes (physically, at least) as well as planning out my food better. I made a huge breakthrough when I realized that you can freeze so much more food than I thought you could, and I got really into making various meals and freezing them for later, as well as cutting up and freezing veggies. I got to expand a really cool project from last year into an independent study, which may have some exciting and statistically significant results, if my supervisor hurries up and emails me back to help with the stats stuff. Oh and I got really into the Stormlight Archive books, which are some of my faves now!
January: I made this cool Queen’s Thief fanart for the ARC contest and started reading the Southern Reach trilogy, which I now love. I went to study abroad in Scotland and even though that was an unmitigated disaster, I was pretty excited about it in January. I’m pretty sure that’s when I went to the Scotland Against Trump rally, which was fun while I was there, and it taught me that I cannot go to protests without lying in bed in severe pain for a week. So now I know for sure and can stop feeling guilty about not going.
February: 21st birthday!!! While I basically don’t drink, it’s nice to be able to get into bars to socialize--now I can go dancing with my friends at the unofficial gay bar that does ‘80s night, and I went on a pub crawl to celebrate winning NaNoWriMo.
March: This was the Hell Month when I started to get really sick and fall really behind in my study abroad classes. I leveled up in trusting people, though?
April: I posted my first fic on AO3! It’s from the Imperial Radch exchange--a character study of Basnaaid Elming.
May: THICK AS THIEVES!!! THICK AS THIEVES!!! THICK AS THIEVES!!! Also I fucked off from my ongoing failure in Scotland to go hang out in London for a few days and I saw two cool museum exhibits and two plays at the Globe!
June: I went to Spain for a week and lived in an apartment that was a five-minute walk from the beach. I love beaches! I love Spain! I ate a lot of paella! Then I came back to the US and had some medical problems, but one thing that finally happened was a root canal. This tooth had been bugging me for a year or two, but it wasn’t quite at the point where I needed a root canal. But it finally got there, and it was great because as soon as it was over, that whole side of my mouth stopped hurting! I also moved into an apartment to live with my college friends for the summer, which is nice because a) friends! and b) I live in rural nowheresville and I turn into a depressed lump with nothing to do in the summer, so living in my college’s town got me to actually put clothes on more than once a week and go outside and do shit.
July: Good summer shit(TM) continued, I got to actually see my friends and get up and do stuff. I played Abzû, which was really nice. I read Raven Stratagem and was blown away by all the twists!
August: I got a job!!! It’s kinda in my field!!! It’s only moderately soul-sucking!!! I STILL HAVE IT AND DIDN’T IMMEDIATELY GET FIRED OR ANYTHING!!! KNOCK ON WOOD I CONTINUE TO NOT GET FIRED!!!
September: I went back to school--as stressful as school is, I really thrive in an environment with a lot of scheduling. It turned out that my failed semester in Scotland wasn’t gonna fuck things up as badly as I thought. I also got my first paycheck! And I did a bunch of writing, mostly fic but some original. I became better friends with @horaetio and @corvidfeathers (and also @antinoan but we were already pretty close) because of our Horrible Shakespeare Class.
October: Obviously good because !!!Halloween Month!!! I kinda almost got kicked out of college but managed to recover pretty well. And while Provenance came out in September, I think I actually didn’t read it until early October, so that goes here.
November: I WON NANOWRIMO so obviously that’s the big one for November. I also made some Etsy sales and got into Animal Crossing Pocket Camp.
December: O hey that’s this month. I did a creative writing piece for my Horrible Shakespeare Class final and people loved it. (My other two finals aren’t due until January, rip in pieces.) It was really encouraging and I might??? expand it??? into a full script??? (It was presented as the script for “selected scenes” from a fictional movie.) I also got a lot of really nice, practical gifts, like a handheld vacuum cleaner, a postal scale, hiking boots, slippers... And a bunch of books! EDIT: also I just wrote a bunch more a few days ago and may post a Second Entire Fic soon. (This one is longer! There are chapters!)
I’m tagging the three nerds I tagged earlier when talking about the Horrible Shakespeare class, since I can’t tag you twice. Also here’s a random selection: @aconfusedbird, @phle-botomy, @tiniestwarboy, @mirandatam, @whatagrump, @mazarbor, @kallistoi, @bookaddict7342, @breha, @sqbr, @genehazard, @bb-ace, @thesirennebula, @sword-omens, @swordsnowprano, @adhdronanlynch, and anyone else who wants to do it but I totally spaced out and forgot about! And also you are not at all obligated to do this if I tagged you, I just picked some people I could think of off the top of my head whose years I’d love to hear about!
