One of the biggest mysteries of Homestuck 2 is who's narrating Candyland with Calliope gone, and the more narration-heavy style of the new team is really calling attention to that. This is very flanderized Jake English dialogue. Also a dramatically more active Jake English than we've seen all...ever?

Under no circumstances can you allow her to get to The Point.

Gonna have fun with that MacGuffin name, huh, writers? It occurs to me that Jake was supposedly a spy the whole time but this is the first indication that he's actually been telling the resistance anything instead of just calling himself a spy as a cope.

I like this art a lot. But also what the hell is Meenah doing here? Last time we saw her, in the epilogues, she was out in space and stole the Ring of Life from John before escaping into a server beacon. Did it lead her into the black hole (lmao get owned), or is this an alternate timeline ghosts? Are her eyes closed in order to drag out that reveal?

As fish puns go, "Prawnference calls" is excellent.

So, Meenah has her eyes closed to prevent me from knowing if this is the alpha version or a doomed ghost, and now she's dropping very vague hints about what the plot point is. This does feel very homestuck, in that it's teasing out the reveals to maximize speculation. Skaia is, of course, related to SBURB, and thus this is confirmation of the fandom assumption that they're going to start a new game, without actually saying much else.

I have no idea why this air vent is Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff style, but Vriska kicking the sound affect is still funny.

The comedy quotient has increased notably under the new team.

I don't ship them or anything, but this John/Vriska dynamic where John is kind of the oblivious straight man to all this wacky nonsense is one that Homestuck has been very light on since Act 6.

That was a good update. It was funny, it moved the plot along, and it gave us stuff to speculate about! And the art was really good!

Hi Nell, a writer question! I am kind of planning to do the same thing you did, which is to publish a retelling of my D&D campaign on AO3, and I was wondering if you have any tips on how to go about it in a way that's interesting to more than the six people you played with? Thank you:)

Oh excellent, good for you! Let's see what I can think of.

So, to start, outside of prose retellings, my group started off with a powerpoint presentation that lays out characters and locations and a bit about the plot. By no means did everyone who has read some of our D&D fic look at the powerpoint! But if nothing else, I think it helped solidify for us sort of what character tropes and focus points an actual fandom provided with our "canon" would lean on. (Someone in @scribescribe's (damn, it won't tag) group similarly did a fandom primer for one of their campaigns like it was an actual TV show, which let me read some fic while, again, knowing what points I should be focusing on.)

For the retelling itself, a few pieces of advice you should take with a grain of salt, because while I've written lots of D&D fic, I haven't done what you seem to want to, which is what I think I'll call a novelization of your game!

Don't feel the need to include every single thing that happened! Elide things that don't fit your tone (for instance, if your game is overall horror and there was one session where you went through a portal to Candyland, that may be something to skip), sidequests that went nowhere, streamline what you need to. D&D campaigns are shaped very differently from novels and D&D pacing.

On the other hand, feel free to add things in! In my first D&D fic, where I was basically doing a backstory for my character followed by a quick summary of the campaign in her eyes, and I took advantage of that to establish some character beats we glossed over because the DM for that campaign didn't facilitate a lot of RP. Likewise, for You Feel Just Like the Sun, which starts with moments from the last third of the campaign, I wrote dialogue and moments that didn't happen "onscreen" because they fit the themes better.

You don't have to fully stick to D&D rules! In fic, I rarely stick to strict rules for spells or rests or a thousand other things. I often describe a spell's effects rather than assuming that a reader knows what Blight or Vicious Mockery does. I do my best, when I'm writing action, to find ways to describe it that don't lean on D&D terminology (for a masterclass in this, read the final battle scene from @samyazaz 's we are all cinders from a fire burning long ago, it's an AU but three of us actually played that battle out and she took extensive notes and then went back and wrote it out gorgeously).

In some ways, to conclude, writing fanfic for a D&D campaign that doesn't have a devoted following like Critical Role or Dimension 20 is more like writing original work than fanfic. The audience doesn't already know and love these characters, so you can't use shorthands to start out. I think the smartest thing my group did is that each of us started our D&D fanfic spree with a backstory fic for our specific characters that then went on to encompass important feelings and arc things from the campaign. It gave us a place to build from before we went on into shipfic and AUs and such.

“What was the inspo for lucine and candyland?”

Alice in wonderland! I was a very big fan and enjoyed the books/movies. The original name was going to be “Alice in candyland” but that isn’t our MC’s real name!

“What role do these characters take in the story?”

Beth/queen of pink | Queen of hearts.

Cindy the kotton kitty | Cheshire Cat.

Frizzie | Mad hatter

Liliana | the caterpillar.

Miss Reeces and cane | tweedledee twins

“What is this story about?”

It’s about a young girl named lucine who stumbles across candyland after going out to get her grandmother some fruits. However Candyland isn’t as *sweet* as it seems….the queen warns her that she isn’t supposed to be there and must leave as soon as she can, but Lucine is too curious and wants to uncover this lands hidden secrets. finding villages in complete shackles and many terrifying “murderous” disfigured creatures. Most hidden places in candyland are extremely violent and chaotic which is why the queen tries her best to lead Lucine away from the path to those places without her knowing.

“What are the rules to the ask?”

Don’t ask anything too suggestive or Sexual, ESPECIALLY with our minor characters please.

Never ask the queen about her past children. EVER.

Don’t go in the ask saying things about how you ship the characters…. The only exception would be Beth/the queen x Liliana. Or the adult characters in general! It’s okay for them but not our child characters please!!!

I guess that’s it…just don’t be weird and mean💕

Last and final question!

My candyland is inspired by my online and irl friends and the game candyland!(Im not very good at drawing so I had to use gacha club 2. Sorry!)

In order from left to right the characters are:

Mrs.Candy(ruler of candyland. She's the pink one)

Miss Sourpatch and the sour kids. (Her husband is unknown for now)

The Pocky Twins. Mango and Strawberry flavored.

And Senorita Jelly Bean(purple and black. Her little siblings are like Rolly pollys lol)

They all live in candyland. Helping and sending the player on tasks. They can be violent but it is rare, they get angry at things like

Here's some canon things about each character!

Mrs Candy: she is the ruler of candyland! Often guiding the player to where they need to go! She also always has some type of pastry with her.

Mrs Sourpatch: she is very protective of her children. Sometimes turning violent in their favor

The sour kids: they are quadruplets! Often seen by their mom or traveling in pairs. Each having their own personality. Green is shy, Purple is sassy, Red is sweet and yellow is hyper.

The Pocky twins: Think The Weasley twins from Harry Potter. They love pranking and meeting new people. Always balancing on their Pocky sticks.

Mr.Sweetart: He has a massive crush on Senorita Jelly Bean. Although he is very easily flustered from any type of flirting. On the other hand he is very smart and loves experiments. He is also gender fluid! He can change his gender as he pleases ^^

Senorita Jelly Bean: She is very flirty. Often flirting with anyone although it's mostly Mr.Sweetart. She is either always balancing on her jelly bean or she's leaning on it.

Mini Jelly beans: they are usually never seen. Although they do pop up every once and a while to mess with the player. Usually creating chaos when their elder sister isn't around.

LOL yeah it was specifically built on Lovecraft's writing. You didn't make your own characters but you could pick out from a set to play as, all with their own different strengths and weaknesses. I picked the homeless man because he had a dog and I died in a haunted house by a swarm of rats. Fun times! I think there was a detective character too and I think he had a gun. That's about as much as I can really remember.

I'd give another mid to lightweight rules game a shot but unfortunately that friend lives a lot further away now and the only non work friends I have are all online uwu

“God tis be pathetic...”

Earl didn’t know how he ended up in this mess. God he didn’t even know why this happened to him in the first place. All he remembers is his “Dimensional” Spell going all over the place and transporting him here. Well it was PART of the spell to visit the world, but he never expected hell to break loose in the process and take him somewhere else. The moment he arrived in this new “World” he immediately felt uncomfortable. It was a land full of sugary sweets, blue skies and colourful candy like locations. 5 seconds of laying his eyes on the place he KNEW it would be worse than his old world. He was as furious as an erupting volcano of this outcome but at the same time... He didn’t want to think about it. He felt as if it was his fault. He never messed up this badly before. What is his family thinking now? Are they worried? Most likely.

But he knew there was no point in moping, he had to find answers. And some ambience because at the moment his anxiety was building up. And that’s not good in his case. He walked around in discomfort for what felt like hours when it reality it was only 20 minutes. That was until he managed to come across a dark, long, red and black thicket. 

“Well thank praytell something that doesn’t make thy eyes bleed out sugar.”

He did feel it was quite unreal that something this gloomy and dark would be sitting in this land of confectionary. But after all, Earl was the same Earl who lived in a world of fairytales while he and the almighty Coldfaces stuck out as the “Odd” ones out. He sat down in awe, confusion and guilt. He needed something to pass the time. Good thing he never left his wand out of the picture... So he casted a spell and magically pulled out a keyboard. Then he began to play an ambient but... somber tune, singing a sorrowful song in the process. Sounded like the dead of night. He didn’t know how calm he would feel after this but at least he had some form of company... But there would be more company coming. He just didn’t know it.
