In case anyone needs to hear it, sometimes spellwork looks like this and that's okay.
Tumblr media
Like seriously the whole spell I recently did I was sat with Loki, wrapped up in a blankie cocoon, sipping my coffee (which is a glorified caffeinated chocolate milkshake.)
Loki was SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS SPELL y'all. Was insistent that I didn't even have to do "part two" bc "part one" was powerful enough. They told me it was a really big spell, and I honestly felt it- this was some intense work.
Part one was typing with intent and channeling Loki's energy into my intent since Loki wanted to be the main energy source. Literally I looked like that^ the whole time. Spellwork can look cozy if you want it too.

spell jars 101 ✧
updated version
Tumblr media
how to craft a spell jar:
cleanse your jar
gather your ingredients
charge and program them, and then add them to the jar
close and seal with wax, ribbon, string, etc. to finalize and cast the spell
decorate your jar however you'd like, or not at all - up to you
what you can use as a jar:
tiny glass jars with cork lids
mason jars
pickle/pasta sauce jars
old medication bottles
food storage containers
bead storage tubes
what you can add to a spell jar:
dried herbs
dried citrus peels
dried flowers
magical powders
small crystals
gem chips
essential oils (a drop or two will go a long way)
infused oils (carrier oils such as olive or grapeseed oil that have been infused with herbs)
a few drops of charged water (storm water, war water, sea water, holy water, rain water, moon water, sun water, etc.)
paper (with sigils/symbols/glyphs drawn on it, an incantation, a name, a phrase, etc.)
coins
beads
glitter or confetti
seashells/shark teeth/sand, etc.
leaves/acorns/sticks/bark/moss
animal fur, nail clippings, teeth, or whiskers that have fallen out naturally (if i catch you trying to pull out your pet's whiskers or fur, i will fight you)
nails, glass, pins, needles, thorns, and other sharp objects (great for cursing, binding, banishing, or protection)
vinegar, lemon juice, pickle juice (mostly for “souring” a situation)
honey, sugar, syrup (to “sweeten” a situation or for attraction)
pretty much anything that fits and corresponds to your intent
what you should avoid putting in a spell jar:
unless your intent correlates with the contents of the jar spoiling or going bad - don't use anything biological in nature (think bodily fluids), don't use fresh produce or herbs, and be mindful of water content inside the jar. you don't want a moldy, biohazardous mess on your hands (unless you do, then that's cool, too).
what spell jars are good for:
containing your spell, theoretically making it easier to manipulate and control
manifesting goals/intentions continuously or over time
passive manifestation that doesn’t require much ongoing participation from the caster but is subject to regular maintenance
what to do with your spell jar once it’s been crafted:
keep it on your altar
keep it in an area that's appropriate for goal manifestation (for glamours, keep it in the bathroom; for sleep or dreams, keep it in the bedroom; for safe travels, keep it in your vehicle; for cursing, keep it concealed in a black box; etc.)
wear it as jewelry
put it in your pocket, purse, or backpack
bury it in your backyard or within a potted plant outside (for spells you don’t plan to undo or want to last indefinitely) - if burying is not an option, hide it somewhere on your property
leave it at a crossroads
recharging spell jars:
shake it up
light a candle on top of or next to it
submerge it in a bath of herbs or crystals that are associated with energy
submerge or surround with sea salt (a natural conductor of energy)
anoint with oil/blessed or charged water
pair with a tarot card or rune stone that matches your intent
suffumigate with incense smoke
energy work and visualization
disposing of and reversing spell jars - when you feel like the spell has done its job or you need to undo its effects:
remove the contents from the jar and either destroy them, bury them, or throw them away
for items you wish to save, cleanse them thoroughly before using them again
take the jar and cleanse it in whatever manner you choose and either save it to be reused; or dispose of it safely

٭❀٭٭❀٭ Sweetening Jars ٭❀٭٭❀٭
Tumblr media
The basic function of a sweetening jar is to... sweeten! This spell can be used for relationships, situations, groups, organizations- really anything you'd like to make sweet towards the recipient.
Originally from hoodoo and folk magic, Sweetening jars have been used for centuries and in many different pagan and spiritual practices. Here are some variations of this spell:
Honey Jars
Tumblr media
Perhaps the most widely used and known version of a sweetening jar is the honey jar. Many places around the world did not have access to sugar (or it was extremely expensive) for a good long while. Honey was often the main source of sweetness and was more readily available for use in magic.
Slow & Sweet:
Honey is a natural sweetener that undergoes a slow transformation as it is created. The nature of how it moves & flows is steady and slow. Magic incorporating honey will be slower, but the effects might be longer lasting. Sometimes fast working magic isn't always the answer, such as when we want a situation or person to slowly sweeten towards us over time. This is the place and time for honey jars!
How to Make a Honey Jar:
Also See:
Prepping For a Spell
Setting Up a Ritual Space For Spellwork
Components needed:
Honey
Jar/container with a lid
paper and pen
Casting:
Intention is everything, and all ingredients/components in a spell must know why they are there working for you. Make sure your intentions are clear going into the spell. Tell the honey that it is here to sweeten your intended person/place/thing/situation. Let your jar know that it is the container of this spell and these energies. Set powerful intention as you continue through the steps.
Begin to fill your container with the honey. About halfway full, pause and write out the recipient of the spell's full name on one side of the paper, and the target upside down adjacent to the recipient so as you fold the paper in half, the names meet.
Add the folded paper into the jar, then continue filling to the top, sealing with (yes) intention. Optionally you can light a candle of corresponding color on top of the jar, either sealing it with the wax (if you intend to not re-open it) or just letting the energy of the fire boost the working. You may add as many situations or people into the sweetening jar over time as you see fit.
Remember, honey moves slowly. Keep this in mind, as the energies may be powerful but slower working. Set the honey jar on an altar or in a space you often pass by in the home, re-energizing the jar every time you see it.
Sugar Jars
Tumblr media
Sugar is another effective way of creating a sweetening jar. In this method, water is used as a vessel to contain and amplify the sugar. Water is faster moving than honey, so this version of the spell is best for workings that need to be fast acting.
Water is Receptive:
Water is one of the most powerful magical tools available to us. Our bodies are mostly water, we drink it in order to survive, it ensures that our planet and all living things thrive and grow. In combination with sugar, we have a highly effective mixture for ushering in an abundance of sweetness.
How to Make a Sugar Jar:
Components needed:
Sugar
Water
Jar/container
Paper & pen
Casting:
As stated above, intention is everything. Speak your intentions to your tools. Fill your jar/container with water, then scoop in the sugar while thinking about your desired outcome. Fill the water until it is properly saturated with sugar (it should be so sweet you wouldn't want to drink it). Once again, write the names across from each other on the paper, fold it, then add it to the jar. You can even add some glitter for added effect. Close the jar, then swirl the liquid creating a vortex inside. Seal the spell with a candle if you see fit and leave it on an altar or commonly seen space in your home. Swirl it to re-activate the spell.
This spell is highly effective if you are in need of fast acting magic and sweetness, but it may not be as long lasting as a honey jar. Try making one of each for the benefits of both spells.
In Conclusion:
Sweetening jars are a great way to bring some sweetness/love/luck into your life. They can be used to sweeten relationships, situations, groups, and even for self-love. Honey jars are slow moving but long lasting, and sugar jars are fast acting but shorter lasting. This magic is great for beginners and experienced witches alike. Go forth and add some sweetness to your life!

So, you just realized you're a witch...
Well here's a guide to some things you might find helpful.
If it's something tangible, chances are you might already own some of these things, if not please don't stress about getting them. For some items I will include stores that you can find them as well as price points using the dollar symbol.
Candles
These can be in the form of chime candles, pillar, taper, glass, votive, tea light, etc.
You can get them in various colors but if you are trying to save money you can get white candles. And add your intention and herbs (or just your intention) to achieve your desired outcome.
They can be found at:
The Dollar Tree ($)- Best for votive, pillar, taper, tea light, jar, floating, and glass candles. They can often be found in multiple colors and scents.
Michael's craft store ($-$$) - Best for tall/large pillar and taper candles.
JoAnn Craft store ($-$$)- Best for the same candles as Michael's craft store.
Metaphysical shops ($-$$) - Chime candles and speciality candles such as glass candles with writing on them (exp: love, Orisha, justice candles) and figure candles.
Stores that sell scented candles ($$) - Examples of stores like this are Bath & Body Works and Yankee Candles. These are best for looking for candles that have scents that correspond with your particular spell. For instance, if you're doing a peace spell you may want to look for a candle that smells of lavender or a candle that puts you in a peaceful state of mind regardless of the scent name or ingredients.
Incense
Incense are excellent for air magick and you can often find them rather cheaply in most stores. I personally try to find them as toxin free as possible but you purchase what incense makes the most sense for you. Just as with candle scents, look for incense that either corresponds with your spell by the herb they are supposed to smell like or by feeling.
The Dollar Tree ($) - The ones I've been too have mainly been good for chakra incense.
Etsy ($) - There are multiple sellers with a lot of different scents and quite a few with free shipping!
Magick.com ($)
Amazon ($)
Metaphysical store ($)
Herbs
If you decide that you want to work with herbs you can usually get away with the ones you already have. However, I would caution against burning herbs that aren't organic but of course that is your decision to make. Some places to get herbs are:
The Dollar Tree (they don't have organic but they have a decent selection)
Your local grocery store
Target
Walmart
Metaphysical store
Note: If you can't find the herb you may want to consider using the essential oil instead. Only use a drip of the essential oil. You can also get a tea bag with the herb you need, rip it open, and use that.
Nail Polish
Color magick is the main thing here, but I have come across some scented nail polishes as well. Either way, you can choose a color and/or scent that corresponds to your spell. Here are some affordable brands (by that I mean the polishes from their main collection are not over $10.)
Wet n' Wild
Esssie
LA Colors
Revlon
Sally Hansen
L'Oreal
CoverGirl
L.A. Girl
Cosmetics
I know a lot of people typically include nail polish in this group but I tend to save this category for things such as lipstick, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and blush. Once again, the main purpose of this category is color magick but it can also be used for glamour magick. Some brands are:
elf cosmetics ($)
Wet n' Wild ($)
Revlon ($) - Mainly their lipsticks
Rimmel ($) - Lipstick and Blush
Nyx ($)
Revolution Beauty ($)
Essence Cosmetics ($)
Divination
If you are interested in divination there are so many types that you can easily find one that you connect with. Some forms of divination are:
Bibliomancy
Pyromancy
Tarot, oracle, and playing cards
Osteomancy
Water scrying
Crystal scrying
Mirror scrying
Automatic Writing
Tasseomancy
Pendulums
Types of Magick/Witches
It is not necessarily important that you pick a particular type of magick but I think some witches take being able to study multiple types of magick at once for granted. Not everyone is able to maintain focus while looking at magick as a whole, that's why I think separating magick and witches into types can be helpful. This is by no means a complete list but it's a start.
Celestial/cosmic magick
Elemental magick
Green witch
Hedge witch
Water magick
Earth magick
Air magick
Fire magick
Draconic witch
Eclectic witch
Lunar magick
Solar magick
Fairy magick
Kitchen magick
Sea witch
Candle magick
Ceremonial magick
This is by no means a comprehensive list and I will likely add more things to it over time or create more lists similar to this one. But I hope this was at least somewhat helpful!

THIS IS AMAZING OML. TYSM FOR REQUESTING THIS!! THIS IS SO FUN TO MAKE <33
Black Magic
Tumblr media
Clarisse La Rue x Daughter of Hecate!Reader
Summary: Brewing potions and matchmaking is a fun but not much fun as admiring the infallible Clarisse La Rue.
Warnings: KISSING. (i noticed that almost all of my requests had this warning :P )
Author's Note: I'M BACK WITH MY LAPTOP! AND I'LL TAKE A DAY OFF FROM SCHOOL SINCE IM TIRED FROM TRAVELING BUT HERE I AM! I DO HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE THIS.
__
You loved the smell of brewing potion.
As a child of Hecate, you and your half siblings were often known as witches and matchmakers at camp. But still, some campers looked you in the eye and would call you a freak, Boasting about how their godly parent were part of the olympians, pointing at your mother's lack of place beside the Olympians.
Still, you've got a queue of campers (Mostly girls) waiting outside your cabin, The first ones left your workshop with a big smile on their faces or clutching their best friend whispering excitedly.
you and your siblings don't exactly share the same power for your mother had blessed you with different, but divine powers, and sure enough, you got foreseeing.
But some also left with a distraught expression and muttering a string of curses at you...It's not your fault that that their crushes aren't interested in them! You're just a fortune teller!
__
"B-but this is a mistake! I love Presley! your magic is wrong!" Cried a girl from the aphrodite cabin, tears streaming down her cheeks, smudging her mascara, You gave her a sympathetic look before sighing.
"That's not what it said here..." You looked down at your cauldron with purple-ish pink bubbling liquid, The Boy, who you assumed was presley, had another girl in his arms, twirling her around as they dance into a romantic song. The aphrodite girl stormed away furiously, purposely knocking down several of your stacked candles and jars full of ingredients.
Then, You saw the girl bump into someone, It was Clarisse. The girl frowned, but then gulped when she saw Clarisse staring back at her.
The moment Clarisse saw you, her eyes soften a little bit, her lips curling into a smile as she watched you get flustered.
"Hey"
"Hey" You blushed as you hid your face in a book.
"Can i try?" Clarisse asked.
"Try what?" You raised your brow, staring at her carefully, The cauldron separating you two in between.
"That fortune potion thingy, I wanna know who i'd end up with" Her words made your heart break a little bit, You had a big crush on clarisse la rue the moment you stepped inside camp, and now here she is, you crush asking you to foresee her future with someone else.
You swallowed your disappointment and anger before nodding, your face frowning a little bit as you set your book down and grabbed a pair of scissors.
"I need a piece of your hair" You said, Clarisse then grabbed the scissors and cut a decent amount of hair.
She watched you carefully, her brown eyes glinting with admiration as you recited latin and greek spells before dropping her hair into the cauldron, the smoke started rising and the liquid started bubbling, at first, you thought your eyes deceived you, you saw yourself with clarisse, sitting under a tree your back leaned against hers as you two laughed, hands intertwined as the sun rays hit you two.
you became breathless, your body stiff, Clarisse was confused, her dark brows raised as she scanned your expression.
"Oh my gods, please don't tell me it's Chris Rodriguez" She said, she secretly hoped it would be you, the thought of chris rodriguez and her being all lovey dovey made her sick.
When she peaked into the cauldron, She felt victory, joy, ecstasy she couldn't describe it. Every happy emotions filling her as she watched herself and you in the cauldron, laughing while kissing each other's cheeks lovingly.
You became speechless while watching Clarisse's eyes beam with joy, You two stared at each other for a moment before the Ares girl took the matters to her hands and kissed you.
It took you a moment to process what's going on. Then you find yourself kissing her back, pulling her closer as her breasts pressed against yours.
You two were then interrupted by the sound of the door opening, you two quickly pulled away and stepped back. Clarisse pretended to look around while you improvised some words to save you and Clarisse from being caught.
Your half sister, Lou Ellen looked at you and Clarisse before going to her trunk, rummaging into her things.
"I'll have your strengthening draught ready by tomorrow" You blurted at clarisse, You looked at her and she stared back before nodding.
"Of course" She whispered.
As she left, You saw her wink at you cheekily before closing the door.
"What's that ares girl doing here?" Lou Ellen asked.
"Nothing. Absolutely nothing at all" You whispered, still feeling her lingering touch.
A/N: THIS IS AMAZING OMG!!! I TRIED MY BEST TO MAKE IT MORE WITCHY AND STUFF BUT I HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE THIS!!

I made some strawberry freezer jam for a love spell.
Tumblr media
This strawberry freezer jam will not only bring sweetness but will also carry your love magic, manifesting the intentions you’ve infused in it.
Ingredients
2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and mashed (symbolizing love and passion)
1 ¾ cups sugar (for sweetness in love)
4 tablespoons lemon juice (for clarity and purity in relationships)
1 packet of powdered pectin
A pinch of pink Himalayan salt (for protection in love)
Instructions
Clean your workspace and set the mood with candles or rose quartz. Focus on your intentions for love and affection as you begin.
In a bowl, gently mash the strawberries while visualizing the sweetness and love you want to attract or strengthen.
Combine the sugar, lemon juice, and mashed strawberries. Stir in the powdered pectin and mix thoroughly. If using rose water, dried petals, or vanilla bean, add them now.
As you stir, repeat a love-focused affirmation, such as: “With sweetness and love, this jam I create, To nurture the bonds and open the gate. A love that is pure, a love that is true, Let this magic work, through and through.”
Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the pectin to activate.
Pour the mixture into a clean glass jar, leaving a bit of space at the top for expansion in the freezer. Seal tightly.
Place the jar in the freezer. As you do, visualize the love energy being preserved within the jam.
Use a spoonful of the jam in a romantic breakfast with your lover or crush.

Tech Magick's Biggest Gift:
Minecraft
Tumblr media
Witchcraft is all about intention, THAT is the most important thing. The tools we use are just conduits for that intention. While we are sure we all love the witchy aesthetic and proper traditional tools, that is not always viable. Some witches are in the closet, others may not be able to afford all the tools (it adds up rather quickly). So we came up with a clever way to practice witchcraft to our heart's content!
Altars
Tumblr media
First let's create our space! Altars are something that can be hard to have IRL. They take up a lot of space and cost money to decorate. So why not do it in Minecraft?
In item frames go ahead and place an item that represents each element. Feel free to get creative with it! Luckily Minecraft added candles so you can use those instead of torches! You can even color the candles for color magick (before hand we just used Minecraft Education Edition and used their colored touches). Make sure to also have a bell for cleansing. For cleansing ingredients you may also want a cauldron with a fire under it.
Ingredients
Tumblr media
Luckily Minecraft has a LOT of ingredients! There's amethyst, quartz, lavender. All very basic ingredients. And the ingredients you don't have you can make!
Tumblr media
Simple rename an item that looks similar with an anvil! For example this emerald is now a jade. You can also install mods to expand your item options.
Spells
To make a spell jar grab a chest and throw them in! Feel free to label the chest with a sign so you can keep track.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You could also throw the ingredients into a cauldron if it's more of a stove spell.
Sigil spells are also possible! You can make pixel art of the sigil. Unfortunately these end up needing to be quite big, not easy to fit in a virtual house.
Tumblr media
You can also use a book and quill! You can use the book as a book of shadows. Or you could write a petition and burn it.
Familiars! Contrary to popular belief a familiar does NOT have to be a living thing! It can be an object or really anything. So why not may it also be a piece of code?
Tumblr media
You can also do tarot in Minecraft. This requires some knowledge on redstone. You can take pieces of paper and name them as cards from a tarot deck. Then put them in a redstone randomizer and boom, shuffled deck. We suck at redstone so we've never actually built this one.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
There's probably SO much more you could do here, but these are just a few of our ideas! I hope it was able to kick start some people's imaginations and also help those in the broom closet or on a budget!

Hekate's Blessing Deity Oil
"HEKATE (Hecate) was the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy." - Theoi
I work with Mother Hekate to heal generational trauma, dream work, introspection, and my clairsenses. I venerate her on Saturdays as the planetary correspondences of Saturn fit her well.
She's been with me for over a decade, since the start of my practice. She took on the mother figure role when I personally did not have anyone.
This blog is actually dedicated to her for helping others learn about witchcraft and the occult.
She's a stern teacher, who will take off your training wheels on your bike and push you. However, she'll help you up when you fall. She's kind and nurturing when you need it.
I made an oil for her to call upon her. I use it to carry her with me, to wear for certain purposes and as a candle-dressing. It helps me with my intuition, clairsenses, protection, spiritual communication and divination.
You will need
A clean and cleansed jar
Myrrh - The moon, introspection, protection, spiritual connection, she just loves myrrh (UPG)
Cypress - Historical herb, strength, protection, enhances spirit connection, grief
Lavender - Dreamwork, enhances spirit connections, peace
Thyme - Clairsenses
Carrier Olive Oil - Traditional offering
You can either do the folk method or the hot method. You can find my post on infused oils here to learn how to make infused spell oils. I suggest if you are an animist or someone who wants more power from your oils. Speak to the herbs kindly, treat them less like an ingredient and ask them respectfully for their aid and the purpose they'll have in your oil. Use intention. The same goes for the Olive oil.
You can sub any of these, however, Cypress is historical for her. So is Olive Oil among the Greeks. Try to keep within the theme of the underworld, death, spiritual connection and psychic work.
Blessings!

Simple Full Moon Money Altar
This full moon I asked for something as opposed to my usual altars during a full moon.
I used patchouli, ginger, and basil flowers for money. A green candle for money as well as green wax. A white candle for the energy of the moon. Eucalyptus + Lavender oils and a bay leaf were used for protection and then cloves to manifest the intentions. Black tourmaline for protection and clear quartz to amplify the spells. Since selenite is a self charging crystal, I thought it would be good to have on the altar as well to help charge the ingredients and spells.
Tumblr media
I began by lighting the green and white candles after setting everything up. Then I cleared the area and grounded myself. I asked for the energy of the moon to help me and my family have all the money we need to do the things we want and have the things we need without having to worry.
Tumblr media
I placed the patchouli, ginger and basil flowers in small jar of coconut oil while stating my intentions of having the money to do what we want and have what we need without worry, to create a money oil. I placed the jar on top of three coins to symbolize attracting more money.
Tumblr media
In the cauldron, I placed the bay leaf and then dropped lavender and eucalyptus oils on the leaf while stating my intentions of protection, as having more money can sometimes bring negativity.
I then dropped cloves in the cauldron and then placed a clove on each of the three coins to help manifest the intentions of both.
Tumblr media
The altar will sit atop my dresser until the new moon, being charged by the selenite crystal and me meditating on it for a few minutes each day.
Though spells like this are best on the new moon since you have the growing energy of the new moon to the full moon and then the manifesting/releasing energy of the full moon to the new moon...I wanted to start this right away.

hi angel !! i hope ur doing well.
what do you think sevika would be like with a witchy partner? like a partner whose always slipping crystals into her pockets or using makeup to draw protection sigils on her arm (me lol)
🌕
adorable
disclaimer! i know a bit about witchcraft, being a lesbian and all, but i'm not super familiar with rituals, or cultural practices, so this is all kinda just guessing.
men and minors dni
the thing is... she tries so hard to be a skeptic.
she scoffs every morning when you gently tuck a black crystal into her side satchel, promising it'll protect her.
she rolls her eyes when you talk about astrology or the phases of the moon... like the planets have powers.
and any time she walks in on your burying a candle or some herbs, she just shakes her head and chuckles, then kisses your head and goes about her day.
but... and she fucking hates the fact that it's true... your little potions and spells and whatever else you do... it seems to work.
she asked you one night after she got home, as she was cooking dinner and you were unpacking her satchel for her, why you don't just leave the 'little rock' in overnight, so you don't have to pack it for her every day.
you giggled and explained to her that half the protection is the way you bless it, the symbols you trace into it every morning.
"what kinda symbols?"
"well, i made a special one for you. for when you go to work. that you'll come home safe to me."
and you kinda take her breath away with that answer.
and, worst of all, it seems like it works. each day since you've moved in and started the little morning ritual, she's come home safe and sound, excited to see you.
(she convinces herself it's just the placebo effect, until she comes to terms with the truth when you're too sick one morning to pack her little satchel for her, she forgets the crystal, and gets the shit beat outta her. twice in one day.)
sometimes you anoint her forehead or pulse points with little oils: petals and herbs and other little goodies in the jars. she'll ask what it's for and you'll shrug.
"this one's for peace of mind. you look all far away." you said one night, when you caught on the couch watching tv in the middle of the night.
she was snoring on top of you within minutes.
"this one's for communication." you said on the morning before she asked silco for a raise.
which she ended up getting.
"this one's... well... you'll see." you said mischeviously, before pressing a kiss to her cheek and winking at her.
when she had your ankles by her ears, her strap balls deep inside of you, you giggled and bit her earlobe. "it was an arousal-- ah! arousal oil."
"figures." sevika grunts.
anyways... you know that despite the teasing sevika respects it. she's always bringing you 'cool rocks' for your crystal collection-- you don't have the heart to tell her most of them are just pebbles, so you just add 'em to the shelf. she'll pick up anything and everything that looks a little mystical for you: from cool black matches, to candles whose flames burn different colors, to real crystals, and bones or taxidermied critters.
(she kind of loves the witchy-gothy vibe of it all, loves that there's always candles burning, and incense by the windows-- little jars of goodies and ingredients everywhere. she thinks it's cool. she'll never admit it to you, though.)

Two Banishing Powders from a Southern Folk Witch
Tumblr media
In Southern folk magic, the formula used for a banishing spell varies a little bit based on whether you want to banish an actual person (basically getting them to leave you alone) or a spirit/energy/abstract concept.
Banishing formulas for getting rid of living people tend to focus on causing irritation and discomfort to get someone to leave, which may be less effective if they don't have a physical body. Banishing formulas for spirits/energy are more about deep cleansing and making the space inhospitable for undesirable spirits. The herbs and minerals a practitioner might reach for are different in these two situations.
Below are two all-purpose banishing formulas from my practice: one for living people, and one for spirits.
GTFO Powder
For getting rid of unwanted (living) people.
You will need:
The spiciest red pepper flakes/powder you can find (If you like spicy food, use something so hot you can't eat it in large amounts. I like spice and I use Szechuan pepper flakes, but cayenne will work, especially if you know the person you want to banish doesn't like any spice at all in their food. Discomfort is the goal here.)
Black pepper (Used here to cause mild inconvenience/discomfort/bad luck)
Salt (Good, old fashioned banishing)
(Optional) dried, crumbled wasps nest*
(Optional) dirt from the side of a busy road or highway**
*This is actually much easier to find than you'd think, but be careful not to get stung! This is a traditional ingredient in Southern folk magic because wasps are known for how viciously they protect their homes. Fair warning: this is a mean ingredient (since its purpose is to cause pain/discomfort), so I'll leave it up to you whether to include it or not. If you're dealing with a stalking or abuse situation, wasps nest can give you the extra oomph you need to help keep the abuser from returning.
**Only include this if you're trying to make someone physically leave your space or relocate to a different geographical area. And PLEASE be careful collecting this dirt! My advice is to try to collect it during a less busy time of day and to stay several feet away from the actual road.
How to Use It:
When you mix up this powder, speak over it and state your intention. You can enchant this powder for all-purpose banishing, or you could mix up a batch to banish a specific person. Either way, it is important that you tell the powder what it is meant to do. I like to speak directly to the spirits in the powder and ask them for their help.
Traditionally, you would use this powder by sprinkling some in your target's shoes, but that isn't always possible. You can use it in poppet spells by adding it to the feet of the poppet for the same effect. You can also use it to dress candles, add it to jar spells, or incorporate it into other types of banishing spells. Warning: do not burn this powder, as it can cause irritation or injuries to the lungs.
If you need to get rid of a specific person, you'll want to customize the powder to only work on them. The easiest way to do this is with a taglock (an item that has a physical connection to the target). Some of their hair would be ideal, but you can also use a photo of them or even a piece of paper with their name and address written on it, like you were addressing a letter. You'll want to burn the taglock to ash, then mix this ash into the powder. Make sure you burn it outside, because the smoke will be unpleasant.
You can use this powder to keep someone away from your home or another building by sprinkling a line of it across all entrances to the building. If you do this, make sure you've customized the powder for that person with the method above -- otherwise you may accidentally banish ALL visitors.
Ghost-Be-Gone Powder
For getting rid of unwanted spirits or psychic energy. Can also be used to banish non-physical things, like an illness or a bad habit.
You will need:
Asafoetida*
Salt (Again, used here for good, old fashioned banishing)
Garlic (You know how garlic is supposed to repel vampires? That's basically what it's doing here.)
Rosemary (Used for cleansing and banishing)
(Optional) dirt from a church, temple, or other place of worship**
*Honestly, I've used asafoetida by itself for banishing and gotten really good results. This is definitely the Big Daddy of cleansing herbs in Southern folk magic. You can usually find this in international grocery stores or get it online for fairly cheap, and it's one of the few herbs I think are worth going out of your way to get. Warning: a lot of people complain about the smell of asafoetida, but it honestly just smells like a stronger, more pungent garlic to me so your mileage may vary.
**While dirt from a church is traditional, use something tied to a religion YOU believe in. If you aren't Christian, don't use church dirt. For myself, I might use dirt from the Wiccan temple near my home or from another pagan holy site. The point here is to call on your personal spiritual allies for help. If you are an atheist or agnostic, just leave the dirt out entirely.
How to Use It:
When you mix up this powder, speak over it and state your intention. You can enchant this powder for all-purpose banishing, or you could mix up a batch to banish a specific spirit. Either way, it is important that you tell the powder what it is meant to do. I like to speak directly to the spirits in the powder and ask them for their help.
To use this powder to remove a spirit from your home, use it to clean your floors. You can sprinkle it on the floor, let it sit for a few minutes, and then sweep or vacuum it up.
I don't recommend burning this powder as incense, but you can use it in spells. You can place a ring of it around the base of a black candle or add some to a jar spell, for example. You can also use this to cast a circle around your spellwork if you want to protect it from interference in the spiritual realm.
A Note on Cultural Appropriation
Every time I post some of the more folksy parts of my practice online, I get asked whether it's okay for others to use these spells. Specifically, people want to know if these spells come from a closed tradition or if they have to live in the South to use them.
The folk magic tradition I practice is not tied to any closed cultural practice. I will never post anything from a closed practice online. So yes, you can use these powders no matter who you are or where you are from. You don't have to live in the South or be from the South to practice Southern folk magic, but you will get more out of your practice if you have a connection to the region.
On a related note: some of y'all may have noticed that these powders are similar to formulas used in Hoodoo. The GTFO Powder specifically is very similar to Hotfoot Powder, which is used for a similar purpose in Hoodoo. Hoodoo is a semi-closed African-American tradition that is typically passed down in families or communities. When I post about my practice, I do occasionally get comments accusing me of appropriating from Hoodoo.
Here's the thing: my practice does have some overlap with Hoodoo, because I am in the same geographical region and part of the same regional culture that Hoodoo comes from. Over hundreds of years, ideas get exchanged across racial and cultural lines. Just like some elements of Hoodoo come from European traditions, some elements of white folk magic in the South come from African roots. It's not appropriation -- it's a natural result of living in multicultural communities.
All of this is just to say, what I do is not Hoodoo, but I think of my tradition and Hoodoo as cousins. There's some shared DNA, but also a lot of differences. How I do things might look similar to how a Hoodoo practitioner does them, but the theory or exact ritual process may be different.
