Remembered my humanoid witches existed so I did Homulilly and Candeloro
Didn't feel like doing any tiny sketches tho
Tumblr media
Idk if I managed to keep the vibe the others had, I'm also iffy on Candeloro's design
she's a really small witch so I wanted her to be depicted as similar in age to nagisa- if not a tiny bit younger
I might've taken a few more liberties with the uniform designs than I had before eheh,,

Full wnk trailer analysis lets go (p1)
Tumblr media
Homura with wavy hair fronts. Matches the one from the poster
Tumblr media
I dunno about you, but her face looks kinda younger from the side? Cuter? I dont think we've seen anyone else from the side so maybe its just the artstyle and im being silly
The background is pretty hard to decipher
Tumblr media
She has a ring but no visible stone or fingernail marking. It doesnt seem like the end of her main hair is wavy. It looks like she's missing the buttons on her front but this may be an animation error or the angle is hiding them
Tumblr media
This bit makes me think she's falling down a spiral staircase? Though it doesnt resemble the one later. The gold bits look like banisters. The background gives me a stained glass window church feel
Tumblr media
Madoka's home maybe? This is still wavy hair homura
Tumblr media
Madoka has no ring
Tumblr media
Not much to say. Text in the bottom right says mramasa but the rest is japanese and some numbers. Looks like maybe the power of the fan?
Tumblr media
Ibari, number one. Yes its her, the lighting is just pink/red, you can tell cause her blue skin is more purple. To me, it looks like someone is holding her. The light peach parts on the bottom left and right look like the regular animation style. The flowers on the magnifying glass look a little like mami's
Tumblr media
Dumb venus maybe? That compact wouldnt close if it had that pearl sticking out XD
I believe this is a homura we havent seen before. The ribbon doesnt match the poster homu from the right. Its brown, her uniform has a white under shirt. Ive seen people theorise this is Manuke, stupidity. The brown ribbon would match her hair colour. Her eyes are more purple than the pink of the previous homura. The colour also matches phone homu from the first trailer.
Tumblr media
Ive seen people mention the fencing vaguely looks like oktavia's scales. I think the multiple parts remind me more of her tail. The windows at the very edges kinda remind me of the first scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didnt realise at first but this is homura's wing being broken
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Devil outfit has changed. She has a red streak in her hair. Her feathers look fluffier but it might just be the art style. Another red addition to her leg. Her right shoe looks like madoka's. Actually her gloves kinda look like madoka's too
With the city(?) below and the unmoving effects, is this happening during a time stop? Im getting the feeling this trailer (or movie?) has a brown/orange-ish glow to it so maybe they artistically changed the colour of time stop?
Tumblr media
With the bright bg and chair colour, i think madoka is with mami (seen later) in this scene. Also i think thats her left hand, no fingernail marking
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rebellion cafe real, it even has the steps leading up to it (though its not 100% perfect... but eh, artistic licence...)
Also, the girl's teacup is cracked. I cant remember the name but it looks like that japanese art of repairing something broken but making the repairs beautiful (repaired witch???).
A stretch, but the napkin underneath reminds me of homu's handkerchief
Tumblr media
I thought the lack of soul gem in the ring was an animation mistake but maybe not??? And a dark (could just be obscured by the cup) fingernail marking. It looks like the london underground symbol ToT
Tumblr media
Ah the walls dont really match with the rebellion cafe... maybe this is just what cafes look like in madoka XD the single table is still a mirror to it though. I think the lotus flowers are telling.
I wonder if the girl's golden eyes (like godoka's) mean something because magical girls colours usually match dont they? But maybe they've stopped doing that, eh. I like how her glasses are the opposite to homura's, rim on the top.
I didnt realise the thing next to her is a purse, its huge ToT it has flowers on it. I saw someone call them roses to try and say this is gertrud... um no XD have you ever seen a rose???
A stretch but the crockery reminds me of Candeloro's
Tumblr media
Its the same three colours
Tumblr media
Nagisa has brown scrunchies and her hair is in two low bunches with dark red beads. It looks like her dress is different too
Tumblr media
She has the mitakihara uniform and a yellow cardigan. You can see her soul gem ring. The yellow of the cardi and the brown hairbands make me hope it is bear girl......
Tumblr media
Girl full of slinkies!!!! The dots around the place remind me of homura's corruption from rebellion (ala on the bus). This is bandaged sayaka
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These make me think of candeloro's kiss. I think i can see flowers on the spine too
But the hands together on the middle of the spine is from madoka's rebellion transformation
Tumblr media
Walpurgis?
Tumblr media
Yes im sure this is the same cafe as madoka was in now. Very pretty
Mami has her hair clip from her magical girl form on the top left of her head. Also could be animation error but maybe her ring is missing the gem
ALSO ARE YOU JUST EATING A SUGAR CUBE MAMI????
Tumblr media
Is this the same place from the dancing scene? Doesnt one of the nightmares have an attack like this? So is homura doing it because she controlled the nightmares.
Also they explode with white feathers hmmmmmm. I have the horrible feeling homura would do it to scare madoka
Tumblr media
Clearly not the previous kyoko. Outfit is different and more like her original one i'd say. The cake looks like its from the cafe
Tumblr media
Also hnnngghhh concept movie?????
Damn ive hit image limit... well part 2 incoming

Hi there- I hope it's not too much to ask, but, if that's alright, do you have any advice on designing witches in general? Or if there's a certain philosophy you follow in regards to it?
It isn't at all, dearie! Thank you so, very much for asking in the first place!! I cannot emphasize how much this has warmed my heart ^^ /v v pos
My most important advice above all else...if you ask me, I say it's best to take all the time that you need- even if it took weeks, months, or even a year or two, it's best to allow your brain to cook at its leisure. In the meanwhile, I also recommend setting up a way you could archive any and all inspirations/ideas that come your way- whether we're talking about an inspiration board or even a discord server that only exists to compile information, just find a method that best suits yourself and stick with it.
Don't be afraid of going off the walls when designing the witch themselves, either; so long as a theme has been established and everything is sticking to it, you won't have a thing to worry about.
I mean, come on! Ophelia is dubbed as the Witch of Wudan, with a European name serving as a reference to Hamlet, possesses a candle for a head, and has powers over illusions. Candeloro, meanwhile, is a headless little toy known as the "witch of dress-up", whose labyrinth possesses a river of blood contrasting with the idyllic scenery of her labyrinth, and had taken all the measures she's managed to come up with in order to keep her familiars from leaving her alone.
To bring my own creations into the spotlight of shame, and ironically so when considering who he was, Sayf al-Muharib is the Gladiator Warlock who resembles a sheep-wolf hybrid with design elements invoking both the Golden Calf and a "wolf in sheep's clothing" (full credit goes to @gummybonebanes for the wolf part esp), is constantly burning/melting so that he could further imitate his hero, has an Arabic name that means "the warrior's sword" in spite of Gladiators being a mainly Roman thing and his weapon being a HALBERD, and the center of his labyrinth even looks like a soccer arena once you take a good look at it.
All these aspects may look like they make little to no sense for them to be put together, but, once you look at them a little closely and inspect the people they once were, it all begins to fall into place. Like working with individual cogs of a machine, just try to find the piece that keeps the design operational and working in the manner that befits what you had in mind. I also recommend looking at other media that possess story elements that happen to be similar to PMMM's witches for further inspiration as well, such as the Baal bosses from the Bravely series, or the abyss enemies and the concept of the samsara from Genshin Impact.
Finally, and I know this sounds corny as hell, but...don't stress about the design and the labyrinth too much, and try not to push yourself to write even when you're nervous or are dealing with other unrelated strifes. The reason why I regret how Bianchi and Liang-Hui turned out they way they did is because I was, for lack of better terms, not at all in the chillest of moods to write, and, boy, do I regret that now. Find the right mindset and mood you want the labyrinth to embody, try to capture that very emotion and sensation, and just go from there!
For example, the reason why Kealamauloa Kinimaka's labyrinth is the way it is and why I am so proud of it is because not only does every little detail symbolize an aspect of Hau's life, but it invokes a certain emotion; comfort and disconnection from the struggles around you, and, by letting go, you could even float high up to the skies. Sayf al-Muharib's, meanwhile, invokes the emotion of being watched at all angles; denied of freedom by the people surrounding you as you struggle to strive forwards through these suffocating hallways, with the withered statues of his older brother looking down on him- casting a reflection of the beast and failure he has become.
Remember, a labyrinth is the "mental headspace of a magi prior to witchification", as stated by the creators themselves; it can be interpreted as their own worldview and how they saw themselves in the story they're in, the magnitude of their life struggles in their eyes, or are just places that exist to keep the witch's wounds wide open at all costs- a cage forged from their own curses, locking them in this eternal hellish state. Don't be afraid to exaggerate aspects of their lives when it comes to labyrinths; make us plunge into the eyes of the magical people they once were and how they saw their problems! It is all about perspective here.
Best of luck and wishes, anon- and godspeed!

Imagine if Mami and Nagisa reversed their roles in ep 3 with the former being the witch that kills the latter in front of Madoka and Sayaka.
Magical girl veteran and free spirit: Nagisa Momoe takes Madoka and Sayaka under her wing to teach them about the unfettered life of a magical girl.
Tumblr media
But one day, Nagisa finds herself facing the Dress-Up Witch, Candeloro, and falls prey to one of the classic blunders: Candeloro's tea party food that upon being eaten will, quote: "Remove one's soul."
Tumblr media
Not quite sure how that interacts with magical girls, who already have their souls removed but let's just say it caused her soul gem to explode or something.
Everything quickly spirals out of control after that and a lot of people die, much like how it did when Mami was the magical girl and Nagisa was the witch.
Also, because this is a pre-Charlotte Nagisa...

Hey, hey, hey! Guess what's back! That's right, it's the WN girls watch The Rebellion Story! This time it's from Sayaka leaving Homura to Homura's big realization.
Reminder:
G=Gretchen
H=Homulilly
Op=Ophelia
Ok=Oktavia
Ca=Candeloro/Mami
Ch=Charlotte
...
Ok: So you’re just going to let my cape go, flying into the night?
H: I guess.
Ok: Rude.
H: You left it behind. Besides, I’m sure you have more.
Ok: Yeah, probably. Hey, Ophelia. How come you never wear a cape? I mean, it’s not too far away from your usual style.
Op: A cape? Huh. Y’know, you might have a point there.
Ch: If you get a cape you might as well go all the way with the tight, frilly pants and the cane.
Op: I am considering that.
=montage of surreal imagery=
Ch: Well, okay. This shit is happening now.
Ok: Is this just going to keep getting weirder and weirder the more the movie goes on? Asking for a friend.
Ca: Most likely, yes. They’ve dropped the façade of this not being a witch’s labyrinth completely.
Ok: And stuff like this-
Ca: This is what every witch labyrinth was like, yes.
Op: How the hell did you not wake up screaming every night?
Ca: Who says that I didn’t?
Op: Yeesh.
H: And now I’m on a boat.
Ch: Yes, you are.
H: Okay. Why am I on a boat?
Op: So you can stand dramatically on the bow? How should we know?
Ch: She has a point. Say what you will about her, but Homura sure doesn’t miss a chance to be as dramatic as possible.
H: I’m not that dramatic. Am I that dramatic?
Op: You have your moments.
Ok: Honestly, you should’ve kept my cape instead of throwing it away. That way, you can have it billow majestically in the wind!
H: That still doesn’t address why Homura Akemi felt the need to just jump onto a boat.
Op: I don’t know. Sometimes you just gotta brood and the edge of a tall building isn’t cutting it anymore!
Ch: So, what is this? The Tunnel of Love?
Op: More like the Tunnel of Angst.
G: Are those animatronics of us meant to be…literal?
Ch: Maybe? Or maybe it’s like a metaphor for her internal conflict?
Op: All I’m saying is that if I was stuck in a witch’s labyrinth trying to figure out which of my friends was the witch and then a bunch of cardboard cutouts literally started saying my insecurities back at me, then I’d be all like, oh shit! It’s me.
Ok: Oh, Christ. Look at me. Why did you give me the stupidest expression?
H: I get the distinct feeling that Homura Akemi and Sayaka Miki did not have a history of getting along.
Ok: So she’s just being subconsciously petty.
H: I believe so, yes.
Ch: Well, this part is plainly metaphorical! Unless you decided to jump off the boat and found a Madoka idol to claw dramatically at.
G: Why do I look like that? That wasn’t my dress!
Ok: Also, you have wings.
G: And I have wings.
H: Well. That’s…co-dependent.
=Ophelia clears her throat=
H: Oh, what? What?
Op: Nothin’.
Ok: Boat’s on fire.
H: It doesn’t look like my boat.
Ok: A boat is on fire.
Ch: For reasons.
G: Oh, there I am!
Ch: You notice how the city is suddenly normal again?
H: So either I am hallucinating or only I can see the weird. As established.
Ok: You waited until your crush showed up to wipe the brains off of your face?
H: Well, I have to give a good impression of myself.
Op: You think there’s still a gaping hole in the side of your head?
H: Unlikely.
=Madoka leaps off the bridge and lands on top of Homura. Charlotte, Oktavia, and Ophelia burst into laughter=
H: Oh, for Heaven’s sake.
Op: Bet you liked that!
Ch: You think she knows about the gunfight?
Ca: I really doubt it. Madoka is way too chipper.
H: I wonder how you explained it to her.
Ok: You know, with the time-stop thing, from Madoka’s point of view you two just straight up vanished into thin air, only for Mami to come back all flustered and out of breath. You’d think she’d be more upset.
Ch: Maybe it’s a regular thing with them.
Ok: I’d start to ask questions after a while.
=Candeloro and Ophelia both wince=
Ok: Oops. Sorry.
Ca: It’s fine.
Ok: Oh, poor Madoka is just so precious. She just wants to help!
H: Come on. Tell her. Tell her!
Ch: Tell her what? ‘Oh, this city is fake and is actually a witch’s labyrinth’? She doesn’t even know what a witch is!
H: Tell that something is up! Like she did Kyoko!
Op: Which reminds me. What happened to me, exactly?
Ch: Trust me: be glad you aren’t getting more screentime.
Ok: I could stand to see her a bit more.
Op: Then look to your right, dummy.
=Homura tells her “dream” of Madoka’s disappearance=
G: This is awful. Poor girl.
H: I will admit: I find this alternate version of myself to be…pretty aggravating, but if this is what she went through, then I sympathize with her anguish.
Ok: So, like, what did happen?
H: I looked it up during our last break. Apparently Madoka wished for witches to never have existed, which translated into her basically becoming the goddess of magical girls, coming to take them peacefully away to the afterlife before they become witches. And only Homura could remember her afterward.
=Candeloro slowly leans back with a sigh, her eyes lost in thought=
Ok: Okay. So why not just wish that the Incubators never existed? Why only take that part out?
Ca: Incubators have been meddling with human history for as long as we’ve had a history. To simply erase them from time would drastically alter our civilization, setting us back thousands of years.
Ok: Might be worth it. Sure, it’ll take us longer to get cars and movies, but way less kids die.
Ch: I mean, she also could have been trying to avoid a paradox. Like, she wishes that there were no more Incubators, but then who would have granted her wish if they never existed? It’s like going back in time to kill your grandparents to stop yourself from being born. If you never existed, then who killed them?
H: Wouldn’t I have created one already? I mean, if I keep going back in time to save Madoka, that would mean I start each loop having already made a contract. But that means in each new loop, I don’t make a contract, and yet I am already a magical girl, even though the timeline in which I contracted was overwritten.
Ch: Could be an alternate reality situation. As if in, you don’t actually go back in time, but instead travel to another universe every time.
Op: Wouldn’t that mean that the Madoka that she knew stays dead, and each new one is technically a different person?
H: I do not like the implications of that hypothesis.
G: I don’t think that’s what happened. I think she really did go back in time. Don’t ask me to explain it. It’s just a feeling I have.
Ok: Ugh, now I’m getting a headache. Can we get back to Homura pouring her soul out, please? Because that is so much less painful.
H: You idiot! Don’t leave her! Stay with her!
G: Why is she leaving?
H: Because she’s a dummy. You wanted Madoka back! There she is!
Ch: I think she might have put two and two together.
Op: What, so now she knows that she’s the witch?
Ch: Might be. If so, she’s probably going to do something dramatic and doesn’t want Madoka to be in the splash zone.
Ca: Technically speaking, if she is a witch and the whole city is inside her labyrinth, then there is no getting out of the “splash zone.”
H: Oh great. And now the rat is here.
Ch: I knew it! I knew it! That little fucker’s behind everything! Look at that zoom-in! He knows what’s going on!
Op: We kind of had that figured out from the start.
H: I’m just frustrated that Homura didn’t. It is quite obvious!
Ok: Oh! Nice.
Op: Zoom-in! Right on my ass!
Ok: Camera loooooves those cheeks!
Op: Wait. Where the hell am I?
H: Wait, why am I calling you in specific?
Op: I think the dancing mannequins and Madoka’s creepy cardboard cutout in the background are a little more important.
H: Not really.
Ok: So you’re in the world’s freakiest video arcade. Surprise, surprise.
Op: Do I not-
Ch: No, you don’t notice anything. We’ve established this.
H: I’d still like to know why I’m calling you in specific.
Op: Who else you got? You and Mami just went to town on each other, and on the town! Sayaka just totally fucked with your head. Madoka is…sort of in her own little world of obliviousness. Kyoko is the only one who you’ve told your suspicions to and haven’t actively tried to kill in the last hour!
Ch: You forgot me.
H: Charlotte, no offense, but in this situation I think you’d be excluded by default.
Ch: You know what? That’s fair.
Op: Hey, wait! Tavi, I just thought of something. If this other you knows what’s going on, how come you never told your smoking hot but still totally oblivious girlfriend?
Ok: How the hell would I know? Not-dead me is a total weirdo.
G: What is she doing?
H: I believe that Homura has finally figured it out, and is about to test her theory.
Ok: So…what happens when she confirms that she’s the witch?
Op: We all die horribly in the flames of perdition! The end!
=Kyoko rushes out of the arcade to see flaming blimp descend on her=
Ch: You mean like that?! Jesus!
Ok: RIP to Kyoko Sakura, crushed by a blimp.
Op: She was the lucky one. She gets to end up in Freehaven and sit the rest of this movie out.
Ch: No, wait, you’re still alive and yelling. Despite Satan-blimp.
Op: My buddy’s being weirdly dramatic. Clearly that takes priority over combusting airships.
G: And your phone…Okay, your phone is just a piece of paper. Okay.
Op: Shit is about to go down, isn’t it?
Ca: I have a feeling that all Hell is about to break loose, yes.
H: Well. This is…
G: Horrifying?
H: Something like that, yes.
G: I just feel so bad for her.
Ok: Would it be accurate to start calling Homura Homulilly now? Since, you know…
H: I’d…honestly prefer it if you didn’t.
Ch: You know, this might not really be the kind of thing I write, but I do know a thing or two about what goes through the heads of writers, and believe me: the script writers and the animators were having a blast doing this scene.
H: They enjoyed tormenting me with this deranged nightmare?
Ch: Yes.
Op: Sick.
=clocks strike midnight, bus bursts into flames, blimps fall from the sky while the city burns=
=no one has anything to say. They just watch silently, until…=
G: Oh no.
Ca: I wish there was something we could do for her.
Ch: Yeah, not gonna lie, at first I was thinking that she was kind of a jerk, but now…
=Homulilly says nothing. Homura shoots her soul gem=
Op: Not even the soul gem was real.
=Gretchen hugs Homulilly, who still hasn’t said anything or even moved=
Ok: I’m just going to say it. I’m glad we died.
Ch: I can’t disagree. I mean, I feel bad for our families, but…
H: I would like to take a break please.
Ok: Um, sure.
=movie gets paused=
Ok: Are you okay?
H: I don’t know. I knew this was coming, but seeing how much pain she is in…
Op: It does kind of make you think. That could have been us.
Ch: That was us. We did become witches.
Ca: It wasn’t that drawn-out.
G: It might have been for Homulilly and me.
H: I doubt it.
Ch: How much of the movie is left?
Ok: A little over forty minutes.
Ch: That long? Jesus, there had better be a happy ending!
Op: I predict we all die.
G: That would be a happy ending.

Thank you kindly~ Apparently in the PSP game (and other Madoka media, but this is where I first heard of them,) Kyoko's witch is named Ophelia. She rides a horse and has a candle flame for a head. Mami's witch is Candeloro, who is the witch of dress-up and is itty-bitty and her head is a bonnet and her familiars are waitresses that look like Kyoko/Sayaka/Madoka. She is precious.
Omgggg it’s a good thing the tiny doll witch with little miniature friends wasn’t in the anime my heart would have shattered into microscopic pieces

What holidays do the witches like to celebate?
Gertrud likes Christmas (probably not religious... just think of it as a gift giving day...) she likes spending the time with her friends
Suleika likes Halloween because she likes dressing up scary and matching with Ulla
Charlotte loves every holiday, especially the ones where she gets presents. Especially more the ones where she gets food.
Elly likes Valentines day because you can do it all in secret.
Albertine is similar to Charlotte though she's less food inclined. Likes Christmas the most.
Gisela doesn't really like holidays that much, she's a bit of a party pooper. Though more recently she'll celebrate anything if Gertrud is.
Elsa Maria loves Christmas and any time she can be with her family. She's a little scared of Halloween.
Uhrmann hates holidays, especially when she has to be with her family. Gets excited on Valentines but always gets let down.
Oktavia loves Valentines, of course. She's written a love letter every year but has yet to get any in return.
Izabel likes anything where she can show off her art. She makes greetings cards for every holiday she can. Her birthday is probably her favourite holiday if that counts.
Patricia doesn't really celebrate anything.
Roberta likes anything where she has an excuse to drink. New Years is her favourite.
Kriemhild likes Christmas the most because of the nice atmosphere and she loves snow.
Walpurgisnacht loves Walpurgisnacht, of course. She holds a party on the two days.
I'd say Candeloro likes Candlemas but it's a bit too religious XD she likes Christmas then. Any excuse to bake for others is welcome.
Ophelia likes Halloween as an excuse to scare younger kids.
Homulilly likes Halloween too but her favourite part is dressing up.
Quitterie likes Halloween for dressing up too but likes any other holiday where she can give gifts to her friends.
Itzli likes Halloween for the same reason as Ophelia but scares everyone. She's a bit of a menace

Bunny ohhh that explains it why he is so nice with boreas and Alice so let see our adorable demon who can fit perfectly in a teacup candeloro
*He then turns to Candeloro's page.*
Haruki: "Candeloro, a small, but kind-hearted witch demon from the Hound Arcana. She has a passion for dressing up and tea parties, and despite her small size, her Bless attacks aren't to be sneezed at. She also despises being alone, so anyone who tries to run away from her finds themselves wrapped up in her ribbons, as they are now her precious friends."
