god i cannot express how impressed in general i am with the storytelling that cr is doing with candela obscura but what really strikes me is how evident it is that the storytelling they do is defined by the hearts of those who are putting it together rather than adhering to a specific idea or image of a given story that they want to uphold. there is such a stark difference between the tones of chapter one and chapter two (to the fault of neither, i’ve enjoyed them both immensely because they both happen to hit parts of the supernatural-horror genre that I am so deeply fond of and so happy to see in a real play medium).
there’s the obvious difference in gming styles, matt has fantasy running through his veins and that’s evident in the way that chapter one ends up having a tone akin to something like the scarier episodes of buffy the vampire slayer. spenser outright references mike flanagan in his pre-interview thing and good grief is that so so evident in his narration and the way he emphasizes the themes emerging in the story in the environment of the world they journey through and choices like the letter from sean’s mother that subvert the audiences ability to rely on a character’s perception.
but the energy the groups of players bring to the storytelling is obviously also so important, too. like, even just looking at the groups prior to watching each I probably could’ve guessed which might’ve had a more lighthearted tone. the combination of ashley, anjali, and robbie already would be one i’d guess a more warm/goofy vibe for (not to say they can’t be serious and dramatic, but the tone of the seriousness is still warm and the world that prompts them towards drama likewise feels warm) and laura, despite her propensity for goofs, does tend to be a chameleon with group make ups. likewise i think we all had a certain (affectionate) fear™ when it was revealed that marisha, brennan, luis, and travis would be reuniting in another short form story and that has certainly held up and been incredibly bolstered by zehra’s absolute commitment and immersion into the story (constantly fucking blown away that this is her first real play she’s incredible).
this is all just to say as someone deeply interested in digital storytelling, i am so so enamoured by cr’s commitment to following their own desires as humans telling stories to one another while adhering to the requirements they have as a company. and also if you haven’t you should watch candela obscura, especially now that spooky season is here.

Random, but I think my favorite piece of worldbuilding for Newfaire in Candela Obscura is that baseball exists.
Baseball irl has such a long history that referencing it with in a world with an early 1900s aesthetic makes total sense. I don’t even think it’s something just randomly added by one player because according to one interview, when they were play testing Sam played a former Newfaire Baseball star. So it might be deliberately written into the setting. And I just love the texture it adds to the world. Sean using baseball terms in a moment of high stress tells you so much about the guy so quickly.

The way Leo Amicus was the most certain he wouldn’t make it out of all of them—and then he gets to live, to take care of Grimoria and be there for her instead of just leaving everything he has to her when he’s gone…Leo believing he was never going to make it back home. Getting to take a nice long nap, fast asleep and finally resting when Grimoria finds a letter he intended to send post-mortem—

I had tried watching the first episode of Candela a couple of times and was never able to finish it but I'm so glad I finally push through cause the next 2 episodes are great and the pacing gets so much better.
Now I'm almost done with the Needle and Thread chapter and HOLY SHIT, I think it's tied with Calamity as the most amazing thing I've ever watched.
I am also in love with Zehra now

It is just so interesting and compelling and speaks volumes about how Nathaniel has encountered magickal monsters before, he's watched them grab and ruin people instantaneously, how he's fought in the trenches of the Last Great War, lived in active combat for years, how he's seen horrors created by humanity and by magick—but when he looks into the face of terror and is seized by an overwhelming fear, what he remembers is being nine and watching his brother drown.
Of all things that he's experienced, the war, the monstrosities, the evils supernatural and human, that is what lives at the heart of all his fear.

This series of Candela is waaaaaaaay more cinematic than the first, and the first was no slouch
Between Spencer’s narration and some of the amazing moves from the players, it felt less like watching a horror game and more like watching a horror flick
Like, my memories of the scenes from the tunnels, the lighthouse, they aren’t of people sitting around the table
it’s of flickering light in carved stone, as a broken solider sings “take me out to the ball game”
it’s that same solider surrounded by demon dogs, swinging his shotgun like a baseball bat, knowing he will buy the rest of the group the time they need to get past
it’s the shout of his LT, sending him up the rope before being overwhelmed
it’s the destitute woman, older beyond her years, giving everything for her circle, guiding the doctor to the heart as the others fall
it’s the doctor, sealing the wound in the fabric of reality, the spirit of her father guiding her in one final act of love
the haunting flashbacks
the tears
this episode just crawled into my brain and made itself at home

I just finished watching the character creation session for Circle of the Crimson Mirror, and I was cackling when Taliesin described Leo Amicus as "John Waters meets Vincent Price meets a little bit of Roddy McDowell ... just fabulous."
And then he shows up rocking a dressing gown, banging hot sailors, and being incandescently queer for the entire run. Chef's kiss, sir.
Also the line, said in the most prim, high-camp tone of voice: "If it's a problem money can solve, it's not really a problem, now is it?"
Iconic.
