President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate upgrade of 16 health institutions across all six geo-political zones in the country. The president directed that the infrastructure and equipment of the institutions should be immediately upgraded. Prof. Chris Bode, Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, says no fewer than 100 patients are being treated daily at the hospital’s Cancer treatment centre.     Bode made this known to newsmen on the sidelines of the 2019 LUTH WEEK organised by the hospital in Lagos.   The theme of the week was: “Teamwork, Integrating Passion, Purpose and People”.   President Muhammadu Buhari had on Feb. 9, 2019 inaugurated the NSIA-LUTH Advanced Cancer Treatment Centre located in LUTH.   The Cancer Treatment Centre was structured under a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement between the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and LUTH.   The project is an 11 million dollars investment for the rehabilitation, equipping and operation of an existing cancer centre co-located in LUTH, which will provide advanced radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment services.   Bode said: “We have not fully opened the centre, and by the time we finished, we will be treating more than 300 patients everyday.   “We are hoping to be treating over 300 patients everyday; that is good reason to tell the world that LUTH has changed.   “It is a good achievement of proportion. LUTH no longer experienced frequent strikes by its medical personnel.”   The chief medical director said that the institution was able to achieve much in effective healthcare delivery due to the spirit of team work among members of staff. Bode said that no single component of the medical team could achieve much, no matter how good it was.   “If you are a surgeon and you have done a good surgery, the cleaner can ruin your work, if you don’t include her in your team.   “Today in LUTH, we are celebrating the team work we have built over the years, taking care of the teeming population,” he said.   Bode said that it was a thing of joy to behold happiness in the faces of workers in the hospital and to celebrate each other. “Many of us had worked in the sun, people get well and they don’t come back to say thank you. “We are making progress, we have not even reach our point yet, but we will do it if we can continue like this as a team, believing in ourselves,” he said.   Also speaking, Dr Babajide Grillo, Director of Administration in LUTH, called for synergy among health professionals.   Grillo, who was the Secretary to the Management Board of LUTH, said that the aim was to also motivate the staff members through presentation of awards to best workers in different departments and to promote team work. “There has to be synergy, because when you talk about science, you talk based on universalism; you have to know what we have here, you have to know what obtains in Nigeria, outside Nigeria.   “As health professionals, you have to exchange ideas to do research, and research talks about the state of knowledge. “When you talked about research, you have what is called the state of knowledge people want to collaborate,” he said.   Grillo said that there were doctors with fellowship who do research everyday in order to get fellowship; doctors with PHD also do research. He said that the health professionals collaborate with other health institutions in and outside Nigeria which he said was why they moved forward. President Buhari, who received executive members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) led by the President, Dr Francis Adedayo Faduyile, at the State House, said offenders took advantage of the focus on the North East to commit crimes in other parts of the country. “If you cannot secure a country or institution, you cannot manage it,’’ he said. The President noted that efforts were still ongoing to improve employment level, following the success in getting many into the agricultural sector, stressing that opening up the economy for investments and getting the youths engaged will control crime rate. On health and education, President Buhari urged states and local governments to play stronger roles in complementing the efforts of the Federal Government, especially in getting more children into classrooms. “The issues of health and education are constitutional. If there are too many almajiris in a state, then the government is not following the constitution. “The states also have elites who are educated enough to remind their governments about their responsibility to almajiris,’’ he said. In his remarks, the President of the NMA congratulated President Buhari for winning a second term in office, attributing his return to efforts made by the government to reposition the country, especially in health sector, like establishment of a cancer centre in University of Lagos Teaching Hospital. Dr. Faduyile commended the President for always looking towards the NMA to appoint competent members for positions in the health sector, assuring that the medical association will continue to partner with the government to bring good health services to Nigerians. He said there was a need to make the National Health Insurance Scheme compulsory for all Nigerians, including those in the informal sector, as some special treatments, like cancer, will require funds that might be beyond the reach of many. The NMA President urged the Federal Government to further strengthen the primary health care system, institute a health bank where medical professionals can access loans for facilities, remove duties on imported medical equipment and give more attention to security. The Cancer Centre commissioned recently by President Muhammadu Buhari will open its doors to patients on May 1, this year, According to the Chief Medical Director of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Professor Chris Bode.

Professor Bode said the ongoing calibrations and fine-tuning of its ultra-modern equipment to ensure compliance with international standards delayed the centre from becoming fully operational.

He stated that the requisite personnel to offer care at the centre were currently undergoing conversion training in readiness for the smooth take-off of services at the centre.

The multi-billion NSIA-LUTH cancer centre was established as a joint venture partnership between the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and LUTH to address the lack of adequate and comprehensive cancer treatment and management in the country.

The centre, a sprawling edifice covering over 1,500 square metres, had already installed two of its three linear accelerators. It is equipped with a robust Treatment Planning System and a Brachytherapy machine to treat cervical and prostate cancers.

In addition, the chemotherapy suite can accommodate up to 15 patients at any time.

The LUTH facility has been described as the best cancer centre in West Africa and when fully operational, will handle more than 300 patients per day.

A 10-year service maintenance contract is built into the purchase agreement to enable the centre give at least a full decade of uninterrupted service.

A team of experts from training colleges which recently visited LUTH have expressed satisfaction with the state-of-the-art facility, saying it has surely rekindled hope for manpower training oncology in the sub-region.
