[Review] Syberia (PS2)
A graphic adventure, emphasis on the graphics.
Another pick from my monthly retro game club, Syberia is a game I only knew by reputation. While it was developed by MicroĂŻds' Canadian division, it was creatively spearheaded by the Belgian comic artist BenoĂźt Sokal who instilled some unique flavours into it. Exploring some similar territory to his earlier game Amerzone, this is a point and click adventure set in a slightly askew version of Europe.
To spare my wrist from pointing and clicking, I opted for the contemporary PS2 port, which has you directly controlling protagonist Kate Walker with the analogue stick, with interactable hotspots getting highlighted as you pass them. Unfortunately the lower resolution does a slight disservice to the visual design of this game, although not as drastically as the DS conversion (which bizarrely, the later ports were based on, I've been told).
The game makes heavy use of prerendered backdrops to depict the melancholic locales, with some clever FMV insets for motion, and 3D models layered on top only for the sparse few characters. It's all in service of building Sokal's imaginative world, a world of faded glory populated by eccentrics, all touched by Hans Voralberg, the object of Walker's quest. Her mundane task of finalising a contract for the sale of a factory transforming into an unexpected steampunk adventure is ripe for drama, although the game doesn't capitalise on it as well as it could have.
Kate's personal journey is supposed to be along the lines of a buttoned-up lawyer being challenged to embrace the passions of life, but this only vaguely bubbles along in the background so she just ends up coming off as rather bland. Occasional phone calls home are meant to flesh out her arc, but they only served to make me annoyed at her shouty boss, shallow friend, overbearing mother, and worst of all her nagging, whiny fiancé. On the other hand, Kate's companion on her trip is the clockwork automaton Oscar, a standout character who mechanically exhibits a soulful blend of fussy and sassy.
But the story really revolves around Hans, the savant syndrome genius inventor. His influence is felt at each of the stops in your journey, where you talk with those whose lives he has touched, and try to tinker with the mechanical marvels he left behind. His intricate clockwork creations have been integrated in the sleepy French village of Valadilene, the majestic Barrockstadt university, the ex-Soviet industrial wasteland of Komkolzgrad, and the Eastern European hotel at Aralbad. Truly the locations are the star of the game, each seemingly stuck in a bubble of the past, the rich detail making them feel real even through an aura of the surreal.
These places do get let down somewhat by often muted colour palettes, although arguably that ties into the theme of decline that permeates each. A bigger issue is the awkwardness of navigating them, with sometimes unclear traversal options, not to mention the pause between each flip screen as the next one loads. Sometimes the direction you're facing is completely inverted as you move between screens, such that your continued move input turns you around and may even move you straight back. I suppose this is a problem unique to joypad controls... Kate also gets around very slowly (even with the run button), and goes through laborious animations to line herself up with interactables, so the pace of gameplay can feel plodding.
Broader pacing issues are present to varying degrees. The first two chapters in particular have quite drawn-out and convoluted sequences of puzzles and fetch quests. It never gets as challenging as Myst or obtuse as Starship Titanic (two other adventure games I've played with a similar sense of style and prerendered graphics), so I never struggled too much but an occasional nudge from a guide was needed when I failed to see eye to eye with the designers. Dialogue scenes also slow things down with overly wordy prose that you have to comb relevant details out of.
So there's some flaws, but my biggest issue was with the scope of the game. It just doesn't tell a complete story, ending rather abruptly as Kate meets Hans in a location you've already been to. It feels like the decision to split the story up into two games left this one without a satisfying conclusion. Hans' (and the game's) mammoth fixation and the driving motivation to get to Syberia are utterly unpaid-off; Oscar doesn't even get to meet his creator before the game ends, despite that being brought up numerous times! It's simply half a game, and from what I've read the sequel has its own problems with failing to make Kate a compelling protagonist after completing what passes for her character arc, among other things.
But you know, no game is perfect. I still think there's a lot to love in Syberia. The atmosphere is thick and there's always striking visual design waiting around the next corner. Every location feels distinct and fascinating, and each has memorable characters and setpieces. It brings up some interesting ideas, even if it doesn't quite grapple with them as much as I wanted it to. If anything it makes me curious about Sokal's comics, although from a quick look I'm not sure any of them have been published in English! Sacre bleu!

Season 2, Episode 6: Videodate
Let me start out by saying this is one of the best episodes I've seen so far. The sleeze, the revenge plot, crazy 80's visuals...all perfect for a Hitchhiker episode.
The famous guest star this week is Shannon Tweed, known for being in some not-so-recognizable movies and also for being Gene Simmon's wife. I know her from Hot Dog...The Movie, which I guess is a must see for anyone who has ever been a skier or just likes a lot of full-frontal in their movies. The main male character is played by Gregg Henry, who looks to have a decent acting career, but I didn't recognize him. I thought he maybe looked like a low rent James Woods.
We start out with a woman who has very 80's hair watching a video dating service tape of a guy who is making it out to be his first time doing something like this. She is charmed by his vulnerability.
You can see by her joker-like smile, he has sealed the deal. He takes her out to an art exhibit and I have to say this is something I would love to go to even now. There is an area where you can smash a TV:
I mean, that is a really fun date!
Then we see the exhibit of a hot new artist named Monique. Wait, what? It's always weird when I hear other characters on TV with my name, since I don't hear it too often. I guess with a Canadian show, it was just a matter of time.
This is an art exhibit I would love to go to. People with TV heads that play some sort of strange video. It's creepy and disturbing and I'm all in for it.
This one represents the woman TV head's fantasy of running off with another man (shown on the TV). Of course our male character decides to man-splain to his date and also mention that he knows the artist. She seems to be watching this conversation behind him, unamused.
At least I think that is the artist...right? I guess they don't say but it seemed obvious at this point.
By now, the date is going really well.
Well that was a cool art exhibit so I kind of get it, even though he looks like a creep whose hair is just hanging on for dear life. She seems pretty vulnerable and mentions to him that she doesn't want this to be a one night stand. He tells her what she wants to hear...
...then immediately rushes her into a cab. After she is gone, we find out that wasn't even his apartment! He has been paying his friend who is a doorman to use people's apartments for these sleezy videodates.
As he drive away, we see something we haven't seen in awhile.
Oh yeah I almost forgot, there was also this weird image and some video game noise. Not sure what this is, his car is in a video game now?
Haha, as usual, perfect butt is on display. Man, he looks like he could double for George Michael in this shot. Anyways, we see the main character interacting with the Hitchhiker. He refuses to give him a ride.
Also, we are over 8 minutes into the episode before he shows up! We learn that this main dude is named Jack Rhodes. He has a lot of disguises and thinks he is the master of the illusion. But Jack is not the only one with tricks up his sleeve. Yes! Comeuppance! Comeuppance!
So this guy Jack is actually a salesman at an electronics store. He likes to brag to his coworkers about these conquests.
Co-workers Joey McIntyre and Wallace Shawn are not impressed.
We see the female video artist at the store as he is making a sale using his dynamic personality. She is still observing his behavior with disgust. When he gets home he notices a package at his door.
Wait a minute, am I watching Lost Highway now?
We get a good look at his apartment and his "last known photo" board and notice something a little weird.
Nice, huh? But what I'm not showing is that he has a section on this board labeled "foxes" and there are no photos under there.
He settles in to watch the mysterious tape.
Oh no, why does it look like Videodrome now? How many movies are in this?
Honestly I would be crapping my pants right now.
I mean I know it's a hot babe, but this video is still very disturbing.
Anyways, it's Monique, the artist in her underwear. She is saying her name is Barbara and that she wants to go on a date with Jack. Does he think this is from the video dating service, because I wouldn't think they just plop unmarked tapes in front of his door. I thought you had to go to a place to watch the tapes. Well despite this, she's a fox and we've established he's never been with a fox so he is up for anything.
Hmm, now it looks like Blue Velvet. I should probably stop obsessing over these movie references.
Their first date is playing video games. He plays a round and then she sets out to beat his score. She is the original gamer girl! Maybe she WAS creating a videogame from videotaping his car.
I immediately recognize the video game sounds to be from the game Centipede, however the game they show is shooting the letter E for some reason.
Maybe it's also an eye test, who knows. Defeat Enron!
She cuts the date off with the promise that they will see each other again. She invites him to her place for dinner. The building looks run down and this elevator...
I know, but now it looks like we are in an Adrian Lyne movie! Okay I'll stop.
She's cooking him dinner and he is being a total gentleman.
It's not a Hitchhiker episode without someone leering.
Monique changes in a dominatrix-type outfit under her clothes. They have dinner and retire to the bedroom. Jack immediately lets Monique tie him to the bed.
She reveals her sexy outfit and asks if he wants to play a game called Blastoff. I mean, it sounds pretty sexy right? Sounds like code for something else?
She puts on this neon metronome and says he has 1 minute to free himself or he will blastoff. Pretty cryptic.
This thing keeps booping faster and faster as Monique explains that she knows how he treats other women. Jack is upset and sounds like he wants to kill her, demanding she free him. The metronome goes even faster and then...
...his genitals explode? It looks like he dies in ball of flames. Wow what an ending!
Oh wait there's more.
I guess she had been filming this whole thing for her newest art installation. The people watching the exhibit seem confused, maybe they've never seen an episode of The Hitchhiker before.
There is an announcement showing the artist Monique is there and we get this big reveal.
It's Barbara! I mean, I knew she was the artist all along, were we only supposed to get that now?
Anyways, The Hitchhiker is leaving the art museum telling us that Jack Rhodes used the state of the art in video to get what he wanted (really, VCRs state of the art?) but when he had to do it for the sake of art , he went to pieces. Haha! Good one Page! An actual joke! I think he's enjoying Jack's suffering a little more than he should.
Let that be a lesson to everyone...pick up hitchhikers.
As I said before, this was a great episode that had it all, even the confusing ending. I mean, what actually happened to Jack and how did he explode like that? It's episodes like this that keeps me coming back for more, so until next time, be nice to people named Monique!

NEXT UP: THE PARADIGMâS SHIFT October 4 2024
"The Paradigm's Shift" is a fusion of many musical styles, more variants than I usually use in a single piece. To tackle a subject as consequential as the nature of the human race and the "are we alone?" question, I felt the music needed to be pretty epic in its scope while still being able to take a back seat to the visuals. It does have my usual combination of electronic and acoustic components, borrowing from classical, film soundtrack, electro-pop, and other bits.
The video starts with a damaged clip of an interview I give in the year 2049 to French and Canadian intelligence services, they now being closely allied with a top level American task force in the investigation of abnormal events coming from outer space. The badly damaged clip introduces the musical piece in which symbolism depicts the unwavering drive for humans to explore and push limits, no matter what world we find ourselves in.
The feeling that we are being watched makes an appearance as well. The fluidity of time and space, and the existence of multiple dimensions is also alluded to in the video. I try to capture the immensity of the subject matter with the music, a tribute to the human spirit.

Screenings: Celling Sex + INVASION
 THURSDAY, 20th February, 2020
â7PM: Celling Sex (followed by a Q&A)
8PM: INVASION
âTHE 519
519 CHURCH ST., TORONTO
1st Floor - GLASS LOBBY ROOM
Join us on Thursday, 20th February, for a screening of "Celling Sex" at The 519. There will be a Q&A with the some of the creators of the film: Mesha Maloney, Katie MacEntee, Sarah Flicker, Tess Kendrick
This is followed by a screening of INVASION, a short film about the Unistâotâen Camp, Gidimtâen checkpoint and the larger Wetâsuwetâen Nation standing up to the Canadian government and corporations who continue colonial violence against Indigenous people.
 --About--
âCelling Sex is a community-based participatory research project. Using cell-phone video-making and interviews, we learn from young women who trade sex about their harm reduction practices and access to health services. The study engaged fifteen straight and queer-identified women of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds who were between the ages of 19 and 25.
â
Transactional sex is one way that people can get a range of commodities, money, food, and gifts in exchange for virtual or real interactions with them and their bodies. Some people actively choose to trade sex, whereas others find themselves in transactional relationships unexpectedly. There are many different names for these relationships: sex work, sugaring, selling nudes, having a sugar daddy, or being in a strange relationship. Young women who trade sex are often invisible to healthcare providers, but they have unique health physical and mental health needs that require attention. They may also fear and experience stigma from friends, family, and healthcare providers, which can limit their access to healthcare.
â
Bios:
Mesha Maloney is a visual artist and community worker hailing from Northern Ontario. She facilitates trainings for service providers, youth and law enforcement on domestic human trafficking. She has been featured as an impactful speaker across Canada leading discussions on human trafficking and mental health through her own lived experience.
Katie MacEntee has facilitated cellphilm workshops with communities in Canada, Mozambique, India, South Africa, and Vienna. She is the lead researcher on the Celling Sex project, has written widely on the method and is co-editor of the book, Whatâs a Cellphilm? Integrating mobile technology into research, teaching and activism (Sense).
Sarah Flickerâs background is in community development, public health, HIV and adolescent development. Sarah is active on a variety of community-based research teams focusing on sexual health with youth in Canada, and most recently, South Africa. She works across methodologies (qualitative, quantitative and arts-based) and seeks to partner with youth, students and allied practitioners on action research agendas.
Tess Kendrick is a second-year masterâs student who is currently investigating the educative possibilities of disseminating the products of cellphilming, and participatory methods in community settings. She is interested in seeing how research project findings can be brought into everyday accessible spaces through art and relationship building.
Chrystal:
I've been called a sugar baby, goddess, goldfinger, and even other names that are similar in many ways. You can call me Cryssy. Trading sex or selling sex means that you are in a relationship that is transactional. Our study is so diverse, educational and unique - it has made it very eye-opening to me and I've learnt about a lot about other situations around me. I think the screenings and discussions are very productive and useful for sharing knowledge on this delicate topic.
Lelo:
Iâm a queer non binary femme person who really likes vegan gummy bears, yoga and reading books and also I happen to trade in sex! My favourite part of this study is the freedom to exist in this space of challenging societal understandings of transactional and non transactional sex.

Art Organizations and Professional Bodies
Within the creative industry, there are many ways that art is created, exhibited, promoted and funded. Two of the most important cores of support within the creative industry are Art Organizations and Professional Bodies. Despite the different names, the two often get confused and combined a lot when they are very different, leading to misunderstanding within the knowledge new artists have of professional practice. To fully appreciate the benefits of both Art organizations and Professional Bodies it is important to understand the individual impact they both have and what separates them from each other.Â
For example, what is an Art Organization? An Art Organization is a non-profit (such as museums, art galleries, community art centers and residencies) that exists to display, promote, present and exhibit many art forms and practices. They often serve as a place of education and community. Some examples of Art organizations include; Saatchi Gallery, The British Gallery, The Louvre and many more. There are many benefits of Art Organizations, for example a study done by the university of Pennsylvania found that large amounts of art exhibited in a city leads to higher social engagement, more community involvement, higher child welfare and lower poverty rates. This is because art organizations tend to be public, meaning they are very accessible. This also improves local economies as the attraction of art brings in new people, new careers and new visitors. As well as impacting the community positively, it gives artists more space, opportunity and variety in exhibition for their work to be displayed. Art organizations will often give artists the opportunity to participate in competitions and larger collaborative projects. Overall, Art Organizations work together with many artists, councils and communities to impact the overall artistic impact on the world, making sure art is constantly positively influencing people in the world and facilitates artists to help by inspiring with their own work. Â
Now that we understand what an Art Organization is, we need to understand what Professional Bodies are to understand the difference. So, what are Professional Bodies? Professional Bodies are similar to Art Organizations in the way they give artists the opportunity to create and exhibit. However, Professional Bodies focuses more on the individual artists than the overall community and wider impact. They aim to specifically support artists, listen to their needs and ambitions so they can help achieve them by giving them the opportunity and support they need to strengthen old skills and learn new skills. The benefits of Professional Bodies include how artists can benefit from access to business services, education in practices and being a part of exclusive artists communities. In these artists communities there is the chance to work on big community projects with like-minded artists dedicated to similar goals. Being a part of these bodies alongside other professional artists gives creators the opportunity to network, gain recognition and grow their own knowledge of art through others. Finical assistance is also often provided to artists apart from these Professional Bodies. Some examples of local professional bodies include the Royal Academy of Arts (RA), Artists union (AUE) and the association of illustrators (AOI). International Professional Bodies include Europe Visual Arts (EVA), CARFAC (Canadian Artists representation), American Society of artists (ASA) and many more. Â
Overall, Professional Bodies are more focused on supporting the individual artist and giving artists insider information on upcoming opportunities, internal connections and networking and the chance to be a part of an artist's community. Â
So, in closing, we can compare the differences and similarities between art organizations and professional bodies. While both professional bodies and art organizations are important because of their impact on artists career, the opportunities they provide and a wonderful support system within the creativity industry because of their support, they achieve this in different ways. Where an art organization is more focused on exhibition, promotion and local/national community engagement, Professional bodies focus more on representation, individual professional development and networking. However, while both focus on their support in different ways, without both art organizations and professional bodies many artists would find themselves unable to create, express themselves and make a career out of their passions. And so, while supporting the creative industry in different ways, Professional bodies and Art organizations are incredibly important and valuable to artists. Â

Making It As A Writer?
For alumni of-a-certain-age, it might be time to kick-back, smell the roses, stop frantically ripping open those monthly envelopes with the 401K numbers and start working on some of those âmeâ projects. Now, if your direction takes you to writing you must find the topic(s), the writing space, the time and the sticktoitiveness to complete that epic poem or your personal offering for the Great American Novel.Â
When it is finished, you would naturally sit back and wonder which you should pursue first: The financial reward or the artistic adoration? Perhaps you should meet Daina Smith (FCRH Class of 2008). You donât know her-for good reason-but she has already completed 10 feature film scripts and 2 TV series. She has earned 2 options for her work and has two scripts current in pre-production with talent and award winning directors attached.
(IMDb.com)
âI wrote my first screenplay at ten years of age,â said the Westchester County native. âSo, I went to Fordham and concentrated on independent study in the art of acting, literature, and film and had a concentration of screenwriting.â Â
Listed in Forever Fordham under her maiden name of Defrancesco, the one time Finlay Hall resident (thatâs âOld Chemâ to some of us and the former home of the medical school to no one alive today) once completed an internship with a Broadway producer. A passionate writer for most of her life, she spent her college years focusing on screenwriting and attending meet-ups with her mentor, former Fordham professor Meir Ribalow, at The Players in Manhattan. After graduating she began teaching Visual and Performing Arts courses, while keeping her writing goals at the forefront. Â
Question: Screenwriting, show biz, seems so foreign, even dangerous, to many of us. I recall reading that people like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Heinrich Mann went to Hollywood and figured it would be easy money. (After all, if you can write Great Gatsby or The Blue Angel how hard can this movie stuff be?) Yet they got frustrated and both apparently became alcoholics.
Heartland, a Canadian TV Show, that stars Amber Marshall and Kerry James. These two have signed on to star in and produce Dainaâs original screenplay called Elkeâs Magic that is in pre-production. Daina wrote the screenplay based on the novel Elkeâs Magic by author Inger Margaret Foster. Stay tuned!
A Question That Came With Its Own Answer
Hearing this talk about Canada, I noted the other three names mentioned above were all born in the Great White North. I asked if she did much traveling?
At that most opportune moment, her 5 year old daughter came into the room. She apparently had a âbumpâ and needed comforting; mom had to call me back.Â
Question: Do you travel much for these assignments?
Smith: (The now Connecticut resident confirmed) In addition to being a writer Iâm also a full-time Mom to my 5 year old daughter and 7 year old son.Â
For Those Who Want To Get Involved
For those who want to take on writing on their own, she offers help in the form of Scriptwriting Coaching, Script Coverage, and Creative Copywriting services. She has written everything from screenplays to Bosch advertisements to radio scripts for 106.7 Lite FM.Â
Question: It is said that the toughest thing for a person who is new to the craft of writing is to avoid too much expository writing.Â
Smith: It is very important to remember that it is better to show something than to tell something. If âLaura is sad, donât tell me that Laura is sad. Say that âLaura is sitting in her chair, staring blankly at the wall in front of her. Just as the phone RINGS she begins to cry.â Itâs a tricky thing to learn, but once you understand that this is a movie- and itâs all about visuals- you become accustomed to SHOWING what you mean.Â

Other Fordham Connections
Daina wanted us to know that her father is a full-time member of the Fordham faculty as a lecturer, in marketing, for the Gabelli School of Business. He has held that position since 2009 after completing a career with Pitney-Bowes. Her brother Matt is a Fordham Prep alum, and her brother Anthony is a Fordham Graduate School of Business alum as well. The DeFrancesco (Smith) family obviously loves Fordham!
