A Sky Full of Sun - 3
Kristanna Modern au Rated: M WC: 1619
Chapter Index
--------------------
After the sun set, Kristoff asked Anna if she wanted that beer, and they sat in the Palapa Bar while the last of the colour drained from the sky. They talked a bit to the staff and Anna impressed him with her basic grasp of Spanish. She had ordered for them and he had to admit, the language sounded wonderful in her voice.
After the first sip of the crisp and cold beer, Kristoff realized it was going to go down quickly. Was there any better taste than a cold beer on a hot day? And on vacation no less. He was finishing his second as Anna took the last swig of her first.
“So, you want to maybe go grab a bite with me?” she asked, instead of ordering another beer. “Or if you’d rather part ways, that’s cool.”
“No, we can go together, sure. I have no idea what’s around here.”
“I looked up a few places before we came but we can just walk around and find a place. Most of the reviews are good and a travel blogger said if the place is busy, it’s likely a good spot.”
“Sounds good to me.”
They grabbed their things from the lounge chairs and headed up to the condo to change. Kristoff pulled on shorts and a t-shirt and went out to the main area to wait for Anna. He was leaning on the glass railing, looking up at the night sky and all the stars – ones you just don’t see when you live in a sprawling city – when she came behind him and told him she was ready. He turned around and tried hard not to gawk at her.
She’d pulled her damp hair into an updo and was wearing a knee length white cotton dress which she looked absolutely radiant in.
“You ready?”
“You bet,” Kristoff answered, eyes passing the length of her as she turned around to head to the door. She was gorgeous, he couldn’t help himself.
They walked across the main streets and into the town. There were plenty of waiters waiting at the edge of the restaurants, enticing them to come in and sit down, but they walked on a bit, wanting to see what else there was. They settled on an open-aired place called Darlene’s that was owned by a Canadian who’d moved down to Ixtapa fourteen years prior.
“I told myself I was going to order nothing but seafood since were on the ocean,” Anna said, as she looked over the menu. “But there’s chicken cordon bleu and I just love that so much. I’ll bet it’s good.”
Kristoff agreed it probably was and decided to order it too. They were not disappointed, it was fabulous. Paired with a couple more Dos Equis, it was the best meal Kristoff had in a very long time, and he felt it had a lot to do with the company as well as the food and drink.
Perhaps it was the beers, or the fact that it wasn’t what he expected when he heard Sven wasn’t going to be there at first, but Kristoff was enjoying the hell out of himself. Anna was easy to be around, and he had a feeling that the next two weeks were going to be amazing.
*******
Anna laid in bed a long time unable to sleep. She was exhausted from getting up early and getting to the airport and the plane ride and swimming and walking around town, before and after dinner, however, she could not find sleep.
She could hear music coming from somewhere but it didn’t bother her. Her mind was consumed with the thoughts of what could be.
Kristoff was like a breath of fresh air. He was so unassuming. He was polite and respectful and insisted on paying for dinner since she had paid for the cab, even though dinner was twice as expensive. He held so firmly on that in such a wonderfully gentile way that Anna felt a fluttery all over.
They stopped at a Tequila place after dinner and when they got back to the condo they sipped on some coffee-flavoured liqueur, sitting on the balcony and looking out at the night sky over the ocean. It had only been about seven hours since the plane landed, and they had been some of the most enjoyable of Anna’s life as of late.
She imagined staying in touch with Kristoff after they got back. She knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that she wanted to be friends with him, only part of her wanted to be more than that. Anna wondered what his lips would feel like against her own and she finally found a peaceful sleep dreaming about soft sweet kisses.
*******
Kristoff was wide awake. There was a night club or something that was playing incredibly loud dance music, and while it was on the other side of the condo, he could hear it as clear as day. He hoped it was because it was Saturday night and not something that was going to happen every evening.
Unable to sleep, he found his mind thinking over the day. The unease he’d felt that morning to learn that Sven and Liz would not be joining them right away, felt like a distant memory. And he truly was delighted by Anna offering him to sit with her on the plane. That had been very nice of her, although, like she said, better him than a stranger, even though technically he was still a stranger at the beginning of that flight.
They certainly weren’t strangers now. Throughout dinner and drinks on the balcony before bed, they talked about themselves and their lives, and Kristoff found delight in learning more about her. As vehement as he’d been about not letting Sven try and set him up with women anymore, it didn’t necessarily seem like such a bad situation they found themselves in, or rather, that he found himself in. Anna was wonderful.
Kristoff rolled over and grabbed the other pillow and put it on his head. He was dead tired, and he eventually ignored the music and drifted off into dreamland, his last thoughts being one’s of bright blue eyes and a dazzling smile.
-------
Kristoff woke early despite not getting much sleep. Feeling a lot of pent-up energy, he decided to check out the little gym he saw in the courtyard when they had arrived. It was a circular building with glass walls and AC, which was nice given the fact that he was still trying to get used to the humidity.
He had half a mind to leave a note for Anna, except he had no idea where to find paper and looking in a few cabinets he only found books and board games. Not really wanting to snoop too hard amongst the condo owner’s things, he gave up and decided to just do a quick twenty minutes on the treadmill and lift some weights.
By the time he was done, he was a little embarrassed with himself to realize that he was rushing back upstairs, but Anna didn’t appear to be awake as her door was still shut. Either that or she had already left upon finding the condo empty. Kristoff went outside and looked down to the pools, but he couldn’t see her down there. There wasn’t much activity at all yet in fact.
Wandering into the tiny kitchen he found some coffee in the freezer and made a pot. He was leaning over the sink, looking out the window towards town, when he heard her behind him.
“Oh, is that coffee I smell? Bless you, dear sir.”
Kristoff chuckled and turned around. Anna was in pyjama shorts and a tank top and he was absolutely helpless to notice that she wasn’t wearing a bra.
“What are we doing for breakfast?” she asked, opening kitchen cupboards and looking inside. “Unless, you know, you want to do your own thing, no problem.”
“Doesn’t matter too much to me,” Kristoff answered, watching as she found coffee mugs and pulled two of them off the shelf and set by the brewing coffee maker. It really didn’t matter to him. He was discovering that a lot seemed to not matter as much when he was with her. So far, he was happy to go along with whatever she wanted to do.
“Let’s just grab a bite in the Palapa, then I was thinking we could gran a cab to Zihuatanejo and stock up on some groceries. Liz texted me this morning, that’s what woke me up actually, and they booked the Wednesday flight down. I thought it would be nice to make a couple meals here since I just know those two are going to want to go out every night.”
“Sure, that sounds like a great idea,” he said, chiding himself for not texting Sven yet to see how he was doing. Truth be told, he pretty much forgot about his best friend.
“Great! We’ll get that all done and then we can swim the afternoon away.” She smiled then it faltered and she added, “Unless you have other plans. Just let me know if I’m being kind of pushy.”
Kristoff did not want her to get the wrong impression of him about this stuff. “No honestly, that all sounds good for today. Trust me, if I don’t feel like doing something, I will tell you.”
Why did that feel like a lie? It wasn’t, but then again, if she asked him to go to the beach, even though he didn’t care for the beach because he hated sand, he was pretty sure he would go.

A Digital Odyssey: Unlocking the Wonders of Canada
The Great White North, a land of breathtaking landscapes, diverse cultures, and unparalleled hospitality, beckons travelers from around the globe. As a seasoned digital nomad, I've had the privilege of exploring Canada's vast expanse, from the rugged Rockies to the vibrant cities. In this post, I'll share my insights on how to embark on your own Canadian adventure and turn your wanderlust into a sustainable career.
Finding Your Canadian Calling
Before you embark on your journey, it's essential to find your Canadian calling. Are you drawn to the majestic mountains, the bustling cities, or the serene wilderness? Your niche will guide your content, attract a loyal audience, and ultimately define your brand.
Building Your Digital Fortress
A sturdy foundation is crucial for any digital endeavor. Choose a domain name that is memorable, relevant, and easy to spell. Invest in a reliable web hosting service and consider using a content management system like WordPress or Wix to streamline your content creation process.
Crafting Compelling Canadian Narratives
Your content is the heart and soul of your travel blog. To captivate your audience, weave captivating narratives that transport them to the heart of Canada. Share personal anecdotes, insider tips, and vivid descriptions that bring your experiences to life. Remember, storytelling is as important as providing practical information.
Visualizing Your Canadian Adventures
In the world of travel blogging, visuals are paramount. Invest in a quality camera or smartphone with a good camera. Capture stunning photos and videos that complement your written content. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words, so choose your shots wisely.
Building Your Digital Tribe
Growing your audience requires consistent effort and engagement. Utilize social media platforms to connect with potential readers. Share your content regularly, participate in relevant online communities, and collaborate with other travel bloggers. Building a strong online presence takes time, but it's a worthwhile investment.
Monetizing Your Canadian Passion
While travel blogging can be a rewarding experience, it's also a business. Explore various monetization strategies, such as affiliate marketing, sponsored content, selling digital products, or advertising. However, prioritize your audience's experience over revenue. A genuine connection with your readers is more valuable than any monetary gain.
Navigating the Challenges
The road to travel blogging success is not always smooth. You'll encounter challenges, from writer's block to financial constraints. But remember, these obstacles are opportunities for growth. Embrace them, learn from them, and persevere.
Canada offers a diverse range of experiences, from exploring the rugged wilderness of Banff National Park to immersing yourself in the vibrant culture of Toronto. By following these guidelines and staying true to yourself, you can turn your Canadian wanderlust into a fulfilling and rewarding career. So, pack your bags, grab your camera, and embark on your own digital odyssey through the Great White North.

“I Am YEG Arts” Series: Mike Lundy
There are no days more full than the ones we look back on. That understanding of nostalgia is something Mike Lundy knows better than most. For more than six years, he and his partner, Brittni, have been reaching into the past for the inspiration behind their Canadian apparel line, Flannel Foxes. Though Lundy’s design may borrow unabashedly from the past, his mandate for the business reflects what he values today: creating ethically made, socially conscious goods that celebrate the place he calls home—beautiful Western Canada.
Designer, collaborator, and big fan of good folks—this week’s “I Am YEG Arts” story belongs to Mike Lundy.
Tell us about your connection to Edmonton and why you’ve made it your home.
I never pictured Edmonton being my home. I moved here for school to study design at MacEwan, and as Edmonton grew on me, my roots here grew deeper. It’s Canada’s biggest small town, with a welcoming warmth and community that makes me feel at home.
How did Flannel Foxes come to be, and where do you hope to take it next?
My partner, Brittni, actually started Flannel Foxes with her friend. What began as a blog was re-imagined as a clothing brand, and then when I got involved in 2016, we developed the visual identity and apparel. For the last six years we’ve been exploring Canada West, finding inspiration and reflecting it in our clothing.
Looking forward, we plan to continue to expand our range of gear, to collaborate with good folks, and to hopefully do some good for our community in the process.
You describe your apparel as “durable and ethically made in Canada (whenever possible) with partners that treat their people right.” Why was that essential to your brand, and what about that has proven the greatest reward?
Our brand celebrates Canada and the wonderful people who call this land home. We can’t honestly do that without commemorating the craft and skill of Canadian manufacturers. That’s why 100% of our gear is made in Canada. Our investments stay in the community, and as a reward we get to develop long-term relationships with our manufacturers.
What is the creative process like for you? Where do you usually begin?
The inspiration for Flannel Foxes designs comes from a place of nostalgia. Brittni and I visit antique malls and shops, getting a creative spark from old shirts, hats, travel brochures, maps, and even tractor manuals. Once we have our inspiration, the design process starts. I draw, push pixels, and work with our manufacturers until I have a collection that reflects the nostalgic mood that we’re targeting.
How important has collaboration been to your career, and why are you drawn to it?
Other people do a whole lot of cool things. When we work together, we can make something new—a crossover between two people or brands that is more than the sum of its parts. Collaboration in the context of Flannel Foxes has given us opportunities to work with our favourite brands, restaurants, and even CBC!
When you’re taking a break from a project, what will we likely find you doing?
I like to cook, and sometimes my personal social media feeds look more like a food blogger’s than a designer’s. If I’m not working, chances are I’m making some food.
How have you grown as an artist/designer throughout your career. What’s been the biggest change, and what’s stayed the same?
I’ve experienced a lot of the different facets of visual design. I started out designing a lot of websites, worked as an art director at an ad agency, and have freelanced doing brand and packaging design. I love learning new skills, and I think all that experience changed me, giving me a holistic approach to design.
What has stayed the same? I still really get a kick out of designing.
Who’s someone inspiring you right now?
I love the work that Jessica Nepton-Chaye is doing with Copper Cherry. She’s making beautiful bags and backpacks right here in Edmonton. Her dedication to craft and quality is remarkable!
Tell us about what you’re currently working on or hoping to explore next.
We’re working on a few collaborations with folks that mean a lot to us and to Edmonton. Keep your eyes peeled and you’ll see what I mean!
When you think YEG arts, what are the first three things, people, or places that come to mind?
The Royal Bison Art & Craft Fair. They’ve created a place where Edmonton’s artists and designers can showcase their weird and wonderful creations.
MacEwan. It’s where I learned my craft and developed roots in the Edmonton arts community.
The murals. I love the murals and street art across Edmonton. A couple of my faves are the giant Mr. Cenz piece on the back of The Monolith and Jill Stanton’s mural on the Varscona.
Want more YEG Arts Stories? We’ll be sharing them here all year and on social media using the hashtag #IamYegArts. Follow along! Click here to learn more about Mike Lundy, Flannel Foxes, and to shop their apparel.
About Mike Lundy
Mike Lundy is the co-owner of Flannel Foxes and an Edmonton-based designer. When he isn’t designing apparel, he attempts to run a design studio with a focus on branding and packaging design. In a previous life, he was an art director and a website designer at a few of western Canada’s most celebrated ad agencies and design studios. Mike moved to Edmonton in 2007 after growing up in northern Brazil, and is grateful to have this wonderful city as home, even if he’s not quite used to the winters.

Feel-good stories of 2022: From generous communities to octopus hugs
Canadians made the most of 2022 through community, leaning on each other and a few hilarious videos in between.
It has been a year marked by Canadians helping neighbours during snowstorms, random acts of kindness and some amazing encounters with wildlife.
Here are some of the heartwarming stories that made 2022 a year to remember.
RALLYING COMMUNITIES
After Wynston Martin, a seven-year-old boy from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Man., had his collection of hockey cards stolen in an act of bullying, the community rallied behind him. In only a few weeks Canadians from B.C to P.E.I. sent Martin almost 5,000 cards to show him bullies don’t win. This generosity left him with far more cards than before, which he shared with classmates.
Another instance of fierce community support was seen in Montreal when a Korean restaurant owner received threatening phone calls due to his staff's lack of French-language skills, forcing the restaurant to temporarily close. The owner, whose mother tongue is Korean, was blown away when a sea of customers came through after the damaging complaint was left online. Residents reportedly offered to volunteer French translation services to keep the restaurant open.
A Winnipeg bus driver warmed people's hearts when he got out of the bus to help a visually-impaired passenger find a bus stop. The act of kindness was captured on video by Devon Lipscomb, a passenger who said it was something he had never witnessed before.
Passing on the generosity, Winnipeggers threw a surprise baby shower for a couple who fled war-torn Ukraine in May. Mariia and Constantin Domin, who welcomed their first child in 2022, were in shock when the community came bearing gifts to help the couple celebrate the milestone.
In Elora, Ont., a couple taking wedding photos almost had their day ruined when the groom's ring disappeared when he tossed snow up in the air. Adam Richardson and Tamar Silverbrook took hours to search for the ring before Elske de Groot, an Elora resident, walked by to ask how she could help.
De Groot posted a callout on the community Facebook page and the couple was flooded with offers from people trying to locate the ring. It was when Bryan Poletto, another community member, brought out his metal detector that the ring was found.
In Ontario, a kind stranger opened her door to Kirstin Hanson and her friend. The two were trying to go home to Regina, Sask., when their flight from Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ont., was suddenly cancelled in June. Stranded without a place to stay, Hanson and her friend were approached by a Toronto woman who offered them a place to sleep over.
“So she had called her husband and said we're going to take home these two Saskatchewan girls that are stranded, and so we ended up at their home,” Hanson told CTV News Toronto.
The Toronto couple ended up taking the two women on a quick trip to Niagara Falls before driving them back to the airport for the next flight to Regina.
CANADIANS ON VIDEO
A nine-year-old’s brutally honest interview with CTV News Toronto in January resonated with people across Canada and the world. After a massive snowstorm hit Southern Ontario, Carter Trozzolo was out shovelling and wishing he was in school instead.
A travel blogger from the U.S. captured a stream of Canadians saying "thanks" to their bus driver in Victoria, B.C. The video by Corrin Carlson, which was posted on TikTok, garnered over 7.4 million views and showed many people saying "goodbye" or "thank you" to the bus driver.
“I just found it incredibly endearing,” Carlson told CTV News Vancouver Island, adding she had never witnessed such courtesy before on public transit.

Another TikTok video captured a heartwarming reaction to an act of generosity in Windsor, Ont. Danny Curtis is a longtime volunteer with The Windsor Goodfellows, an organization collecting funds for various charities in the community and best known for its holiday newspaper fundraiser. TikTok creator Zachery Dereniowski approached Curtis who was out canvassing the neighbourhood in November. In many of Dereniowski's videos, he tells a person he doesn't have money to see if they will help him out anyway. After a short conversation, Curtis told Dereniowski he would make a contribution on his behalf so he could have a paper. Dereniowski then offered Curtis $500 and his reaction, posted on TikTok, has amassed over 40 million views.

Gurdeep Pandher, a Bhangra dancer, brought positivity and joy to Canada's Atlantic provinces this year. Bhangra is a traditional folk dance from the state of Punjab in India. Pandher, who resides in Yukon, toured across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador bringing his dancing skills and humour. He has been documenting his journey on social media while spreading his mission statement of "togetherness" through dance.
At Peggy's Cove, near Halifax in Nova Scotia, my local friend and I marched together by the beautiful Atlantic Ocean for cross-cultural togetherness, hope, healing, belonging & joy. He played his bagpipes and I danced Punjabi Bhangra. We're dispatching positive vibes to everyone. pic.twitter.com/7ccqM07q2S

ENCOUNTERS IN NATURE
Andrea Humphreys made a new friend while diving off Campbell River on Vancouver Island. The eight-tentacle giant Pacific octopus gave her a full-body hug and a kiss on Oct. 15. The encounter caught on video is a rare moment when humans and sea creatures meet. Humphreys described the encounter as "mind-blowing."
Feather enthusiasts flocked to Thedford, Ont., to watch a never-before-seen bird in Canada. The shorebird got lots of attention as hundreds of people trekked to see the marsh sandpiper. It is an Asiatic bird and rarely shows up on the west coast of North America. Birdwatchers made sure to line up for a glimpse of this spectacular winged creature.
On the other end of the food chain, Jerry Burke accidentally caught a 50-inch muskie while fishing in Georgian Bay, Ont. Right outside his cabin, the Killarney-area angler was going for the 20-inch pike in the ice hole when the pike was grabbed by the muskie. The event, including the muskie's return to the water, was caught on video.
As amazing as nature is, sometimes it gets in Canadians' way, like the herd of bison delaying traffic in Fort Qu'Appelle, Sask. In late August, drivers on Highway 10 were halted when bison crossed the road. The sight captured on video was posted to Facebook for everyone to enjoy.
