The result? Maternity leaves, for the first time in public service history.
A progressive government would let workers bargain freely”

Canada Post unveils Maud Lewis themed Christmas stamps
A Nova Scotian icon will be celebrated on this year’s Canada Post line of holiday stamps.
On Monday, Canada Post unveiled three new holiday stamps featuring the festive paintings of Nova Scotia folk artist Maud Lewis.
This year’s Christmas stamps feature artwork by one of Canada’s most beloved folk artists, Maud Lewis. Learn more about her story: https://t.co/kKqMEPytCT@artgalleryns pic.twitter.com/DPnlL26SkA
— Canada Post (@canadapostcorp) November 2, 2020
The stamps feature three of Lewis’ seasonal paintings, all from the Collection of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia: Family and Sled, circa 1960s; Winter Sleigh Ride, circa early 1960s; and Team of Oxen in Winter, 1967.
‘Maud Lewis is now considered one of Canada’s best known and most beloved folk artists,” explains a statement from Canada Post. “Despite the odds against her, Maud’s desire to reveal the wonder of the everyday world and the simple yet joyous beauty of rural Nova Scotia burned like a flame that simply refused to be snuffed — and continues to live on in her vividly coloured, exuberant works.”
Lewis, was born Maud Kathleen Dowley to John and Agnes Dowley, in the town of Yarmouth, March 7, 1903. Maud lived with her husband Everett Lewis in a small house in Marshalltown, N.S, and drew inspiration from the rural N.S. farms, fields and shorelines near her home.
“I paint all from memory, I don’t copy much,” Lewis explained. “Because I don’t go nowhere, I just make my own designs up.”
She spent most of her life in pain from arthritis that left her hands and body deformed, but continued to paint her art. Her masterwork became her colourfully painted home, which is now displayed in the Nova Scotia Art Gallery.
Lewis’ collection at the Nova Scotia Art Gallery attracts thousands of visitors a year. In 2016, he story became even more widely known with the release of the film Maudie.
The stamps are now available on Canada Post’s website and in stores.

Protesters hold brief blockade at entrance of Canada Post facility in Halifax

HALIFAX — A handful of protesters briefly blocked the entrances to Canada Post’s main facility in Halifax early today in a show of solidarity for employees who were legislated back to work this week.
The group left about two hours later at 10 a.m., after police told them they were not allowed to block vehicles coming in and out of the plant.

Canada Post said on Twitter that the protests amounted to the illegal obstruction of the movement of mail, adding that it would “take appropriate action to address illegal activity” affecting operations.
We can confirm individuals are illegally obstructing the movement of mail and parcels at our plant at 6175 Almon St. in Halifax, NS. We’ll continue to take appropriate action to address illegal activity impacting the collection and delivery of mail and parcels.
— Canada Post (@canadapostcorp) November 30, 2018
The gesture comes after the Canadian Union of Postal Workers held 37 days of rotating strikes across the country before back-to-work legislation was officially passed Monday.
Canada Post indicated this week that Canadians can continue to expect delivery delays for the next several weeks.
Danny Cavanaugh, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, says people want to take a stand for collective rights because they’re unhappy with the imposed legislation.
“We’re here to make sure that we’re doing something to protect our rights under the Canadian Charter for fair and free bargaining,” he said.
“We’re out in solidarity. Of course, Nova Scotia isn’t immune to getting legislative pieces by our provincial government and of course the federal legislation will have detrimental effects on everybody right across the country.”
