Watched a Thought Slime video, and I'm left thinking that both Slime and JJ McCullough are missing the mark from both ends.

If you're a White Canadian, you likely descend from colonizers. You've settled on stolen land and yes, your current living conditions are rooted in theft, ecocide and even probable genocide - but you're not the perpetrator. You just live here.

I think that admitting the harm that our forbears caused is important. Admitting the harm that current industries cause to the local ecosystems matters, but pointing a finger at the other closest White guy and going "You're part of the problem!" does nothing for nobody. It's reductive and it's racist. What I keep hearing is rooted in the deeper, less-realistic ends of the Ecological movement (think Solarpunk off the rails) and the weird belief that if you placed pollutive industries in the hands of Native entrepreneurs, they'd just fix shit. As if having a Native card for tax exemptions or service access made you magical, or inherently better than anyone else.

We actually need each other, and if two people of diverging backgrounds are competing to lead an Environmentalist platform, I won't have a bias for the Native guy just because. I'll put my vote in for the most competent of both persons, hoping that both candidates, Native and Non-Native alike, can step up to bat.

But apparently, that's a racist line of inquiry. I have to buy into the Fable of the Magical Native Entrepreneur whose quality as someone whose gene pool was here before mine is automatically guaranteed to do better. Or something.

I don't know about you, but if I were Native, I'd be pretty fucking pissed off to hear Whites assume that I'll just consult with the ancestors, listen to the spirits or just spend a few days in a grove, to then emerge from it all knowing exactly what to do with the failing Canadian branch of Swedish lithium-ion production.
