India has stopped issuing visas to Canadian citizens amid an escalating row over the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil.
India said the temporary move was due to "security threats" disrupting work at its missions in Canada.
Tensions flared this week after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said India may have been behind the 18 June killing.
But Mr Trudeau said on Thursday he was not looking to provoke India with the allegation.
India has angrily rejected the allegation, calling it "absurd".
Speaking to reporters in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Mr Trudeau said: "There is no question that India is a country of growing importance and a country we need to continue to work with."
He said Canada was not looking to provoke India or cause problems with the allegation but is unequivocal about the importance of the rule of law and protecting Canadians.
Relations between the countries - key trade and security partners, and US allies - have been strained for months. Analysts say they are now at an all-time low.
India's government swiftly made clear the suspension of visa services also "applies to Canadians in a third country".
"There have been threats made to our high commission [embassy] and consulates in Canada," a foreign affairs ministry spokesman in Delhi said. "This has disrupted their normal functioning. Accordingly [they] are temporarily unable to process visa applications."
He said: "India is looking for parity in rank and diplomatic strength between the diplomatic missions of the two countries. This is being sought because of Canadian diplomatic interference in our internal affairs."
Hours earlier Canada had announced it was reducing its personnel in India, saying some diplomats had received threats on social media.
"In light of the current environment where tensions have heightened, we are taking action to ensure the safety of our diplomats," a statement said.
Canada's visa services remain open in India.
The two countries have historic close ties - and much is at stake.
How India-Canada ties descended into a public feud
Why are some Sikhs calling for a separate state?
Canada has 1.4 million people of Indian origin - more than half of them Sikhs - making up 3.7% of the country's population, according to the 2021 census. India also sends the highest number of international students to Canada - in 2022, they made up 40% of total overseas students at 320,000.
According to Indian government statistics, about 80,000 Canadian tourists visited India in 2021, behind only the US, Bangladesh and UK.
The row burst into the open on Monday after Canada linked India with the murder of separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who was shot dead in his vehicle by two masked gunmen outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada's intelligence agencies were investigating whether "agents of the government of India" were involved in the killing of Nijjar - who India designated a terrorist in 2020.
India reacted strongly, saying Canada was trying to "shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists" who had been given shelter there. The Indian government has often reacted sharply to demands by Sikh separatists in Western countries for Khalistan, or a separate Sikh homeland.
On Thursday, Mr Trudeau was pressed by journalists about what evidence there was that suggested India was linked to the murder.
He did not share further details, but said "the decision to share these allegations was not done lightly".
"It was done with the utmost seriousness," Mr Trudeau said, urging Indian officials to cooperate with the investigation into the killing.
A spokesperson for the Indian foreign ministry said Canada has not shared specific information with India on Nijjar's murder.
"We have conveyed this to the Canadian side, made it clear to them that we are willing to look at any specific information that is provided to us," said Arindam Bagchi on Thursday. "But so far we have not received any such specific information."
The Khalistan movement peaked in India in the 1980s with a violent insurgency centred in Sikh-majority Punjab state.
It was quelled by force and has little resonance in India now, but is still popular among some in the Sikh diaspora in countries such as Canada, Australia and the UK.

Blog 3: The Privilege of Driving to Nature
Mcintosh described privilege as “an invisible knapsack of unearned assets ... of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks” while Oxford describes it as “a special right or advantage that a particular person or group of people has” (Noel, 2000; Oxford University Press Editors, 2024). My personal definition of privilege kind of relates to my country, Nepal. When I think of privilege, I think of the rich tourists who go to Nepal to summit Mount Everest. Not only can they afford the expensive tickets, but they are also able to sit around doing nothing at the base camp while waiting for ideal weather conditions to summit the Mountain. They don’t even have to carry all their heavy equipment; that’s the job of the Sherpas; all they must carry is whatever they feel like carrying. At the same time, the Sherpas must plan their whole year around when and how many rich tourists they can help summit the Mountain. They are not afforded the opportunity to worry about their lives or how taxing carrying all the heavy equipment is on their body. If they don’t risk their lives, the families that rely on them risk starvation for the season, as growing their own food and making money through alternate pathways is nearly impossible. I am frequently reminded of the video where a Sherpa carried a dying tourist all the way back to safety, only for the tourist to go back home, become a celebrity, and not acknowledge the Sherpa who saved their life until the internet forced them to (Zachary Rogers, 2019). I believe the ability to scale Mount Everest, sometimes multiple times, without putting in much effort is the best representation of privilege for me.
Tumblr media

Privilege plays a huge role in nature interpretation since people who are not privileged enough to experience nature interpretation do not even know what nature interpretation means. To the immigrant parents living in the Greater Toronto Area, nature and nature interpretation are not even in their mindset. Their mind is filled with how to support their family, whether they can afford rent this month, and if they can finally buy a car to open more job opportunities. I witnessed my parents go through this as my dad would work night shifts at a Petro Canada and then go to college all while relying on whether this bus would arrive on time. This posed an economic barrier for my parents to experience nature and nature interpretation, which was one of the five factors mentioned in this week’s assigned reading on ‘Why Don’t More Minorities Come?” (Beck et al., 2018). In the same chapter, the authors proposed that public transportation from urban areas to interpretive facilities would greatly alleviate the car economic barrier (Beck et al., 2018). I believe this is a great idea, as I experienced this myself while living in Ottawa, where I did not have a car. I wanted to visit Gatineau Park however, you cannot reach the park without a car or paying for a cab. The city provided free shuttle buses from urban downtown Ottawa to Gatineau Park to alleviate this barrier.

Exploring the World's Digital Borders: A Guide to Popular Electronic Visas and Travel Authorizations
Tumblr media
Traveling the world has become more convenient with the introduction of electronic visas (eVisas) and electronic travel authorizations (eTAs). These digital solutions allow travelers to apply online and gain entry to countries without the hassle of visiting embassies. Let’s explore some of the most popular eVisas and eTAs for travel to Australia, Cambodia, Colombia, Egypt, Kenya, and Vietnam.
1. Australia eTA: Your Gateway Down Under
The Australia eTA (Electronic Travel Authority) is a streamlined travel authorization for short-term visitors. It allows tourists and business travelers from eligible countries to enter Australia for stays of up to 90 days at a time. The application is completed online and generally processed quickly, often within minutes. Key benefits include ease of application and multiple entries during the validity period (up to 12 months).
Who Needs an Australia eTA?
Travelers from countries like Canada, the United States, and certain European countries need an eTA to enter Australia for tourism or business purposes. It’s perfect for travelers looking for a beach vacation, an adventure in the Outback, or a cultural immersion in cities like Sydney or Melbourne.
How to Apply?
Simply visit the official Australian Home Affairs website, complete the application form, pay the processing fee, and await confirmation. With your eTA, you’re ready to explore the land Down Under without the fuss of traditional visa applications.
2. Cambodia eVisa: A Gateway to the Kingdom of Wonder
For those dreaming of Angkor Wat or the vibrant culture of Phnom Penh, the Cambodia eVisa provides an efficient way to gain entry into the Kingdom of Cambodia. This eVisa is available to travelers from most countries, allowing a stay of up to 30 days.
Who Can Apply?
The Cambodia eVisa is open to most nationalities and is ideal for tourists looking to explore Cambodia’s rich history, stunning temples, and bustling markets. Once approved, it allows entry through specific airports and land borders.
Application Process
The Cambodia eVisa can be applied for online through the official Cambodian Government’s eVisa portal. You’ll need to fill out a simple form, upload a passport photo, and pay the processing fee. Typically, you’ll receive your eVisa within three business days, making it a convenient option for last-minute planners.
3. Check-Mig Colombia: Seamless Entry to South America
If you're traveling to Colombia, you’ll need to complete the Check-Mig form before arrival. This is not a visa but a pre-registration form that assists with the immigration process. It helps Colombian authorities streamline border entry, ensuring that your arrival in destinations like Bogotá or Cartagena is smooth.
Who Needs to Complete Check-Mig?
All travelers, regardless of nationality, are required to complete the Check-Mig form before arriving in Colombia. Whether you’re entering for business, tourism, or transit, completing this form is essential for entry.
How to Complete Check-Mig?
You can fill out the Check-Mig form online on Colombia’s Migration Authority website. It should be completed within 24 hours before your flight or arrival at a land border. After submitting the form, you’ll receive a confirmation email, which you should show to immigration officials upon arrival.
4. eVisa Egypt: Discover Ancient Wonders
The eVisa for Egypt offers travelers a hassle-free way to explore the land of the Pharaohs. With an eVisa, you can visit Egypt for tourism or short-term business stays. This eVisa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, allowing a stay of up to 30 days.
Who Can Apply for an Egypt eVisa?
Most nationalities can apply for an Egypt eVisa, including travelers from the U.S., U.K., and much of Europe. It’s a perfect solution for tourists wanting to explore the Pyramids of Giza, the temples of Luxor, or the coral reefs of the Red Sea.
Application Process
Apply for the Egypt eVisa through the official Egypt eVisa Portal. The online application process is simple, requiring basic personal information, passport details, and a small fee. Processing usually takes five to seven business days, so plan accordingly.
5. eTA Kenya: The Gateway to African Safari Adventures
For those seeking the adventure of an African safari, the Kenya eTA allows travelers from eligible countries to visit Kenya for tourism, business, or medical purposes. With the Kenya eTA, you can stay for up to 90 days, making it ideal for exploring the diverse landscapes, wildlife, and cultures of Kenya.
Who Is Eligible?
The Kenya eTA is available to travelers from various countries, including the U.S., U.K., Canada, and parts of Europe and Asia. Whether you’re visiting the Maasai Mara, climbing Mount Kenya, or relaxing on the coast of Mombasa, the Kenya eTA offers convenience and accessibility.
How to Apply?
You can apply for the Kenya eTA online through the Kenya eVisa portal. The process involves filling out an application form, submitting necessary documentation, and paying the fee. Once approved, the eTA will be sent via email, and you can present it to immigration authorities upon arrival.
6. eVisa Vietnam: Your Gateway to Southeast Asia
Vietnam is a fascinating destination, offering rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cities. The Vietnam eVisa provides a quick and easy way for travelers from eligible countries to enter Vietnam for tourism or business purposes. The eVisa allows for a 30-day stay in Vietnam, with a single entry.
Who Needs a Vietnam eVisa?
Travelers from over 80 countries can apply for a Vietnam eVisa. Whether you’re planning to visit the ancient town of Hoi An, explore the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City, or cruise through Ha Long Bay, the Vietnam eVisa simplifies the entry process.
How to Apply?
The Vietnam eVisa can be applied for online via the official Vietnam eVisa website. You’ll need to provide personal information, a scanned passport, and a passport-sized photo. The application usually takes three to five business days to process, after which you’ll receive your eVisa via email.
Conclusion
eVisas and eTAs have transformed international travel, making it easier than ever to explore new countries and cultures. Whether you’re planning a trip to Australia, Cambodia, Colombia, Egypt, Kenya, or Vietnam, these electronic solutions allow you to complete the visa process from the comfort of your own home, ensuring you can focus on the excitement of travel rather than paperwork. Safe travels!

Ontario and held draws under their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), selecting candidates with strong professional experience, language abilities, and employment records for Canadian permanent residency (PR). Both the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) and the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP) issued invitations in early September, reflecting the provinces' ongoing commitment to attracting skilled immigrants. These selections, along with programs like MPNP and NBPNP, provide key pathways for candidates seeking PR through provincial nomination in Canada. In Ontario, the French-Speaking Skilled Worker stream issued 96 Notifications of Interest (NOIs) to candidates with Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores between 290 and 393. To qualify, candidates must be eligible under the federal Express Entry pool, with work experience, language proficiency, and recognized degrees. Similar to other provincial nominee programs, candidates cannot apply directly but must first receive a nomination before proceeding with a PR application to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). British Columbia's draws on September 4th targeted skilled workers, international graduates, and those in entry-level or semi-skilled positions. Skilled Worker streams issued invitations to those working in key sectors such as childcare, with scores as low as 80. These opportunities align with Canada's broader immigration goals of attracting workers already contributing to the labor market. The closure of Saskatchewan's Hard-to-Fill Skills Pilot on August 30, 2024, marks a shift in focus towards more streamlined immigration pathways under the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP). Despite the pilot's closure, other SINP programs remain open, offering alternative PR routes for those in specific in-demand occupations. Globally, applicants interested in pursuing permanent residency in Canada, Australia, or Germany often rely on skilled migration pathways such as the Global Talent Stream. This stream allows highly skilled workers to fast-track their PR in these countries. Immigration consultancy services in India play a vital role in guiding candidates through the Canada PR process, Australia PR process, and Germany PR process. For those in India, Canada immigration consultants, as well as Australia and Germany immigration consultants, provide valuable assistance in navigating the PR requirements and procedures. Whether applying through provincial nomination in Canada, exploring work and study options in Australia or Germany, or seeking consultancy for a study visa, these experts help simplify complex immigration processes. Candidates can also pursue opportunities to work and study in Canada, Australia, or Germany for free, depending on eligibility and program-specific requirements. For instance, Canada PR consultancy services guide applicants through various pathways, including provincial nomination, Express Entry, and other streams like BCPNP and MPNP. Similarly, Australia PR consultancy and Germany PR consultancy focus on the unique immigration requirements of their respective countries, making it easier for applicants to secure permanent residency. Additionally, prospective immigrants often seek advice on obtaining Canada spouse visas, tourist visas (ETA), and other entry permits. These services are complemented by job opportunities in administrative, legal, and medical office assistance roles, which are in high demand in countries like Canada, Australia, and Germany. Jobs like temporary admin assistant, legal administrative assistant, and medical office assistant offer excellent pathways for immigrants to build a career while working toward permanent residency. Immigration consultancy agencies also help clients understand the Canadian permanent residency requirements, Australia PR requirements, and Germany PR requirements, ensuring that they meet all necessary criteria for their chosen destination.

What is the new update for spouse visas in Canada in 2024?
Tumblr media
Are you planning to join your partner or spouse on Spouse Open Work Permit then this Canada spouse visa news is just for you?
As of March 19, spouses and partners of international students are only qualified for a SOWP if their sponsor is enrolled in a master’s or doctorate program at a Canadian university or polytechnic.
The department had already announced on January 22, 2024, several changes to Canada’s overseas student program. The fact that SOWPs will no longer be available to the spouses of international students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs is one notable change.
According to Canada spouse visa news, there are a few exceptions for undergraduate students’ spouses or companions. Spouses of undergraduate students enrolled in the following professional degree programs at institutions are eligible to apply for a SOWP:
Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor (LLB, BCL)
Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.)
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN, BNSc, BSN)
Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng., BE, BASc)
Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS, DMD)
Doctor of Optometry (OD)
Doctor of Medicine (MD)
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
Pharmacy (PharmD, BS, BSc, BPharm)
Spouses and partners need to present two documents when applying for a SOWP:
one showing their relationship with the student and
the other proving their partner’s attendance in a degree-granting program. As acknowledged by the IRCC:
A current Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a designated educational institution (DLI)
a letter from their spouse or partner’s DLI proving their enrollment
transcripts from the current program of their partner or spouse
If you are an applicant who has applied before:
The IRCC states that those who submitted a SOWP application before to March 19 are still qualified if their partner:
has a current study permission.
Full-time attendance at one of the following types of schools:
a private college-level school in Quebec;
A public higher education establishment, like a college, university, or CEGEP
A private Canadian school authorized by provincial legislation to confer degrees (such as bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees)
Must be qualified for work permit post-graduation (PGWP)
These conditions remain the same for holders of SOWPs who wish to apply to extend their current permit.
What happens if you are not granted a Spouse Open Work Permit?
Spouses and partners of international students who are no longer eligible for a work permit can apply for a tourist visa (TRV) or another type of work permit. Conversely, foreigners who come to Canada for tourism are not allowed to work in Canada.
An SOWP is a tool to help the IRCC achieve its goal of promoting family reunions and allows workers to work for almost any employer in Canada.
As per the Canada spouse visa latest news on Canada spouse visas, Immigration Minister Marc Miller said in a statement to the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration (CIMM) on February 28 that he was limiting SOWPs to master’s and PhD students’ partners and spouses to “attack a volume challenge but also integrity challenges with what we believe was an area that was being exploited and not necessarily legitimate.”
Please note that Canadian spouse sponsorship requirements or criteria keep changing from time to time, so it’s essential to check the most recent information with a qualified immigration professional at750-383-2132/ 928 928 9006/ 928 928 9007 for the latest details on eligibility criteria for a spouse visa in Canada.

Your Ultimate Guide to Applying for a Canadian Tourist Visa
Are you dreaming of exploring the stunning landscapes of Canada, from the majestic Rocky Mountains to the vibrant cityscapes of Toronto and Montreal? Applying for a Canadian tourist visa could be your ticket to experiencing the beauty and diversity of this incredible country. Whether you're planning to visit family and friends, embark on a sightseeing adventure, or simply immerse yourself in Canadian culture, obtaining a tourist visa is an essential step in making your travel dreams a reality.
Understanding the Canadian Tourist Visa
Before diving into the application process, it's crucial to understand what a Canadian tourist visa entails. Officially known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), this document allows visitors to enter Canada for leisure or tourism purposes for a specified period, usually up to six months.
Key Requirements for a Canadian Tourist Visa
To apply for a Canadian tourist visa, you'll need to meet certain requirements set by the Government of Canada. Here's a breakdown of the key criteria:
1. Eligibility
You must prove to immigration authorities that you intend to visit Canada temporarily, have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay, and have ties to your home country that will ensure your return after your visit.
2. Application Form
You'll need to fill out the appropriate application form accurately and completely. The form may vary depending on your country of residence and individual circumstances.
3. Passport
Ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your planned stay in Canada. It's also advisable to have at least one blank page for visa stamps.
4. Passport-Sized Photos
You'll need recent passport-sized photos that meet the specifications outlined by the Canadian government.
5. Proof of Financial Support
Provide evidence that you have enough funds to cover your expenses while in Canada, including accommodation, transportation, and living costs.
6. Travel Itinerary
Outline your travel plans, including details of your intended activities and accommodations while in Canada.
7. Letter of Invitation (if applicable)
If you're visiting family or friends in Canada, a letter of invitation from your host may strengthen your application.
8. Medical Examination (if applicable)
Depending on your country of residence and the length of your stay, you may be required to undergo a medical examination to ensure you're in good health.
9. Biometrics
In some cases, you'll need to provide biometric information, including fingerprints and a photograph, as part of the application process.
The Application Process
Once you've gathered all the necessary documents, you can submit your application for a Canadian tourist visa. You can apply online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website or in person at a visa application center (VAC) in your country.
Tips for a Successful Application
To increase your chances of success, here are some additional tips to consider:
Apply Early: Start the application process well in advance of your planned travel dates to allow ample time for processing.
Be Honest: Provide truthful and accurate information in your application. Falsifying information could result in your application being denied or even lead to a ban from entering Canada in the future.
Double-Check Documents: Ensure all documents are complete, up-to-date, and meet the requirements specified by the Canadian government.
Seek Professional Assistance: If you're unsure about any aspect of the application process, consider seeking assistance from a qualified immigration consultant or lawyer.
Conclusion
Obtaining a Canadian tourist visa opens the door to unforgettable experiences in one of the world's most captivating destinations. By understanding the requirements and following the application process diligently, you can embark on your Canadian adventure with confidence. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip today and get ready to explore the wonders of Canada!
Remember, while this guide provides valuable information, it's essential to refer to the official website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for the most accurate and up-to-date guidance on applying for a Canadian tourist visa. Safe travels!

DO YOU NEED A VISA TO GO TO THE USA?
You’re not a US citizen, you’ll have to jump through a few hoops before you can vacation in the USA.
Tumblr media
And by hoops, we mean filling out forms, answering a lot of questions, and possibly attending a visa application interview. But don’t let your concerns about the visa process keep you away.
With some advance planning, you can be standing atop the Empire State Building or hiking into the Grand Canyon in no time.
Start prepping for your trip with our step-by-step guide to navigating visa requirements for US travel. And remember, regulations often change, so always check the latest updates on the US State Department and US Customs and Border Patrol websites.
Who can travel to the USA visa-free?
If you are a citizen of one of the 40 countries covered by the USA’s Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you do not need a visa to travel for business or pleasure and plan to stay 90 days or less. Countries covered by the Visa Waiver Program include the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and most countries in the European Union.
Even if your visa is waived, you will need a passport as well as authorization pursuant to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which is required whether you are arriving by land, sea or air. If you are traveling to the US by plane or boat, authorization must be secured prior to boarding.
If you’re visiting under the Visa Waiver Program, your passport must be valid for at least six months longer than your intended stay, unless exempt due to a country-specific agreement. It must also be an e-passport, which has an e-chip providing enhanced security and a machine-readable zone on your bio page.
After you are admitted to the US, you can make short side trips into Mexico and Canada and be readmitted, but these visits count against your 90-day stay.
If you are a Canadian with a Canadian passport, you do not need a visa or ESTA authorization to enter the US for stays of less than 90 days. Mexican citizens traveling to the US must have a visa or Border Crossing Card.
Be aware that if you have traveled to or been present in certain listed countries – including Cuba, Iran, Iraq Somalia and others – during the time periods set forth in the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015, you may not be eligible to travel without a visa.
ESTA AUTHORIZATION – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
To obtain ESTA authorization, you must register online with the Department of Homeland Security at least 72 hours before your arrival. Once your ESTA application is approved, it’s typically valid for two years and multiple visits.
The application fee is $21 and is payable online. To apply, you need a valid email address, home address and phone number plus the details of an emergency point of contact.
Once you have applied, you’ll receive one of three responses: Authorization Approved (this usually comes within minutes), Authorization Pending (you’ll need to check the status within the next 72 hours), or Travel Not Authorized. If travel is not authorized, you’ll need to apply for a visa.
If you’re from a country not covered by the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a tourist visa before visiting the US.
For additional information about ESTA, visit the US Customs and Border Protection’s ESTA Frequently Asked Questions page.
CROSSING THE BORDER FROM CANADA OR MEXICO
The US has more than 100 official border crossings with Canada in the north and almost 50 with Mexico to the south. It’s relatively easy crossing from the USA into either country. But crossing into the US can pose problems if you haven’t got all your documents with you. Some borders are open 24 hours, but most are not.
Tumblr media
Busy entry points with Canada include those between Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario; Buffalo, New York and Niagara Falls, Ontario; and Blaine, Washington and Douglas, British Columbia.
The main US-Mexico border crossings are between San Diego, California and Tijuana; Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora; El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez; and Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros.
US Customs and Border Protection provides current wait times for entry at border checkpoints and airports on its website. As always, have your papers in order, be polite and don't make jokes or casual conversation with US border officials.
What You Need to Know about Obtaining a Visa?
There are two types of visas for foreign nationals traveling to the USA: nonimmigrant visas for short stays and immigrant visas for permanent residence. Nonimmigrant visas include visas for business (B-1), tourism (B-2) or a combination of the two (B-1/B-2).
With the exception of Canadian citizens and those entering under the Visa Waiver Program, all foreign visitors need to obtain a tourist visa from a US consulate or embassy abroad. Most applicants will need to schedule a personal interview and bring all their relevant documentation with them.
Wait times for interviews vary and can take months. If your application is approved, visa issuance takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. You can check wait times for scheduling interviews at individual embassies and consulates.
You must complete a DS-160 nonimmigrant visa application form and bring its confirmation page to the interview. You'll also need a recent photo and you must pay a nonrefundable $185 processing fee. Bring your payment receipt to the interview. In some cases, you may need to pay an additional visa-issuance reciprocity fee.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your scheduled departure from the USA, although exemptions are sometimes allowed by a country-specific agreement with your country of citizenship. Visa applicants are required to show documents of financial stability (or evidence that a US resident will provide financial support), a round-trip or onward ticket, and "binding obligations" that will ensure their return home, such as family ties, a home, and/or a job.
Because of these requirements, those planning to travel through other countries before arriving in the USA are generally better off applying for a US tourist visa while they're still in their home country, rather than while on the road.
The popular B-2 nonimmigrant visitor's visa, for tourism or visiting friends and relatives, is good for multiple entries. The validity period depends on what country you are from and your application. The actual length of time you'll be allowed to stay in the USA is determined by US immigration at the port of entry when you receive an admission stamp or Form I-94, which sets forth your arrival and departure dates.
If you're coming to the USA to work or study, you will need a different type of visa, and the company or institution to which you are going should make the arrangements.
To extend your stay, you must request permission on Form I-539 before the end of your visit. Do not stay longer than authorized without permission. You may be deported and/or barred from returning in the future. It is recommended that you make the request at least 45 days before your departure date.
Immigration Officers Have the Final Say
No matter what your visa or ESTA authorization says, US immigration officers have absolute authority to refuse admission to the country, or to impose conditions on admission.
They may ask about your plans and whether you have sufficient funds; it's a good idea to list an itinerary, produce an onward or round-trip ticket, and have at least one major credit card.
