Appearance, personality etc.

Revaan/Laverne/whatever-his-name-is's title sort of implies that he might be from a fantasy-Eastern country (they've established that in Twstland, 竜 = Eastern-style dragons, andドラゴン = Western-style dragons). and that's about as much as we know right now about...anything in regards to what he might look like. so I've been trying very hard not to form too much of a mental picture of him, because I'm still hoping we'll get to see him (or at least a silhouette)! ergo, in my head, he kind of looks like this:

I do think the funniest thing about what we've learned so far is that Malleus being kind of quiet and reserved and dignified...absolutely did not come from the Draconias. and he sure as heck did not learn it from Lilia. so he probably got a lot of that from his dad! the vibe I get from how Lilia talks about him is that he could be a bit of a prim little fancyboy sometimes, but was (mostly) willing to go along with his wife's zany antics out of love. he sounds sweet, honestly! I'm sorry he (maybe) died. :(

my favorite thing about Mal's parents is that Malenoa and Lilia's dynamic was "long-suffering guard and princess who has long been the cause of said suffering":

I love this CG! Lane and Yan look like their normal sprites, which is honestly a relief. I enjoy how, whenever Lane is around Yan, he brings out this childish side of her. Like when they were watching the movie together, Lane had such childlike wonder about why Yan was laughing so hard just to find out that he thought it was mid at best 💀.

I can't tell 100% sure if 「Come to Light」 is supposed to be an hallucination provoked by Leviathan in order to have her succumb and eventually do its bidding or something else, but that video gave a really good insight of what Fleurdelys' must've gone through during those 20 years of confinements, fighting time and time again against Leviathan in order to stay in control. It is also very understandable that she'd reach to the point of believing firmly that the only way out of it all, as well as to stop being a threat to humanity is just ending her (this without the knowledge that Threnodians can't die so long as human civilization continues to exist).

HEADCANONS - OBSIDIAN & HER ENTERTAINMENT

i typically avoid diving too deep into a character's personality and motivations unless i know for a fact they're never going to (or very unlikely to) be developed further, but i'm biting the bullet because this woman intrigues me and has ever since the stonehearts trailer dropped. much of what i'm building is based solely on the brief glimpses we get of her, without veering too far away from what i expect her to be like - but it wouldn't be the first time hyv delivers a character that is nothing like they appear, so we'll see what happens in time.

before i delve into things, i do want to stress that i am not buying into the "vampire lady" tropes that are (understandably) popular when it comes to obsidian. yes, she has a lot of blood (or blood-like) themes and symbolism from what we see of her, and her appearance does lean to that of stereotypical vampirism, but unless it comes out in canon that she is something of that nature - this is, for my obsidian, solely for appearance. and that plays into a key part of her personality: she enjoys playing games with people.

her favourite of these games is to play up to the assumptions made about her. she's very much aware of the tropes and she leans into them deliberately. is there an element of truth behind it all? sure, of course there is. she is a more predatory personality, she does enjoy elements of violence, she is described as showing sadistic behaviours - but much of how she presents herself is for show. and if the people around her already think of her in a certain way, then why should she try to change their minds? if you think i'm a monster, then i'll show you a monster.

and should anyone make the mistake of letting slip that they find her unsettling, she will amplify her behaviour to see just how far she can take it, to see how much she can unnerve them, because it is fun for her. on the opposite end of the scale, if someone doesn't react at all to her attempts to unsettle, she finds that incredibly dull and will immediately cease her attempts and/or seek a much more receptive target.

this is, arguably, one of her biggest flaws: she is very easily bored. she craves excitement, enjoys risk - and this can lead to her deliberately creating chaos where there is none (or at least trying to). sometimes, this is simply poking and prodding at her fellow stonehearts in an attempt to spark a reaction, either stirring the pot, so to speak, with information she has sniffed out or pulling at threads she hopes will unravel. some stonehearts will be targeted more often than others - either out of her genuine curiosity and interest in them, or because she knows she can get away with it (to an extent, of course). the amount of respect she has for a colleague may not necessarily affect how often she targets them for this gentle prodding, but it will affect the nature of it: there will be less malice involved if she genuinely likes someone (as much as she can like anyone), instead being more likely to just mildly irritate them.

other times, she goes to more extremes - she may attempt to instigate violence, for example, as she takes great enjoyment in watching such carnage unfold. she will be a whisper in the ear of someone teetering on the edge, encouraging them to take action against the source of their ire. she will never lie to achieve her chaos, but she will use the information she gathers to her own ends.

that being said, she never does anything that would compromise her position within the IPC, or its goals - she may skirt the line quite closely, she may have had a few slaps on the wrist from diamond (either directly, or through opal), but she is very careful not to step too far into territory she cannot come back from. that, in itself, is the kind of risk she thrives on.

i'll touch on her relationship with the other stonehearts in another post, but i just want to close on her vote to expel aventurine: her motivations behind that decision were entirely down to being bored, and disappointed that there hadn't been more carnage wrought within penacony, and had no bearing on her thoughts and feelings towards the man himself. no offense, aventurine, but you just weren't exciting enough for her in the end.

im going back to the game again as my mourn watch rook because... because. because fuck it. i wanted to go through and make her really cohesive now that i understand more about nevarra and the mourn watch. ive stuck with my hero of ferelden for a decade and a half, i ought to do some real thinking about this protagonist, too

i have. much and many thoughts on various events throughout her life, but here's some little deets about ward

makes seed bead flowers for mourners as a comforting token. started with the really simple 7/8 bead ones but eventually learned to make ones w/ layers n separated petals (which still aren't particularly complicated or even much more time consuming to do, but were harder to grasp as a wee bab). if she has the time to sit with a mourner and have them tell her about the deceased, she'd make one just for sewing on to her watcher regalia, as a show of remembering the dead

a collection of possible flowers you might get. type n size n number very dependent on how long she's able to sit n listen to you. it's pretty quick to bang some of these out but she does have Real Watcher Duties Now, not just busywork being given to a child

she's been doing this for about 30 years but if you ask her who a given flower was for, she'd be able to tell you their name and something about them. considers it an important aspect of her job as a watcher.

was really really attached to the mourning masks, especially as a child. way, way more comfortable around the dead in the living, so the mask was an easy way to be around people without making her discomfort quite as obvious, and also helped her feel like she was there As A Watcher/Aligned With The Dead so it was easier to come across as confident because she was feeling a role in knew what was expected of her

fucking comes at you with this on with the boundless energy of an 8-year-old. are you comforted yet. how about now. how about now. how about now.

could be surprisingly effective with other small children tho. yes, startle a grieving child out of remembering that their mother is dead. follow the grinning skeleton mask and tell it what flowers and colors she liked and come pick out something to put on the grave. so, it reinforced this as a habit. it helped! sometimes! so she just kept doing it

as a consequence, she struggled to school her expressions for a long time. she would get so used to wearing it that when she wasn't, she felt very naked and would forget to do little things like not grimace when someone said something she didn't like, so came across... strange in this aspect as well.

annnnnnnd absolutely 100% met and developed a little baby crush on johanna hezenkoss.

hezenkoss was never exactly Her Teacher but she got to sit in on a couple of her classes, was exceedingly impressed, and really fought to be picked as an assistant. probably didn't get a super official role but would offer her services anyway to free up johanna's time. ("hi professor! loved your latest paper; SO fascinating. excited to hear the next one! i heard you mentioned you needed to collect more samples for your research, and, well, im headed down to the west hall later anyway; would you like me to summon up some spirits there and get those samples for you? it's no trouble, really!")

i think johanna has always thought of herself as hot shit so this is nothing new to her, so yeah, sure, she'll accept being doted on. yes, make her life easier so she's free to spend more time pursuing her research and true passions. it's only right that lesser minds take on the grunt work.

i also think ward had... interesting theories about spirits that nevertheless sometimes worked -- 'if you sing to wisps you will often attract more :) i think it's partly because of the resonance but mostly about their innate curiosity and fascination with living beings; they like imperfect loud songs better than practiced perfect ones, so far. im still collecting data to support that thought, though" -- so it was a Wait for her to do some of her own research and develop new theories, so it wasn't all bad even though [spongebob voice] you used me........ for spirit exploitation

contemplating something like, ended up with hezenkoss as her advisor on her practicum, and then had to suddenly switch to another professor to supervise her really close to the end without explanation, which kinda futzed with her progress but which she muddled through with markedly less enthusiasm, BUT that might be Too Much of a connection and it might be better to keep pre-game brushes relatively brief

Finally met Subira from the Order.

I personally like her character and how she made the villagers comfortable with her being there right away! I want to learn more about her and her story.

Ori on the other hand is taking an "keep your friends close, your enemies closer" approach here and just hates her guts. As he would with anyone from the Order hiding knowledge under the pretense of "protecting the people" (always a lie) and creating child soldiers which will be easier to brainwash than adults sooooo we'll see how this goes!
