Quick disclaimer/warning: This document is LONG, it's almost 50 pages, so please don't feel pressured to read the whole thing, especially not in one shot. Also, I have included some disclaimers at both the beginning and end, including the fact that I am not an expert in any of the stuff I've written about in this document and if I have made any mistakes, I apologize, feel free to offer corrections, so long as we're all nice to each other. Thinking about how complicated the relationship between Mithos and Tabatha is in Tales of Symphonia. How Mithos has such conflicting and painful feelings about her, he shouldn't care about this doll that was made to hold his sister's soul, she's just a failed experiment to see if Martel could be revived using an artificial body, she may as well be trash, a broken tool to be thrown away.

But she looks so much like Martel, she was modeled after her, has the same face as his dead sister, and as much as he resents her for failing to be a suitable vessel, he can't help but be comfortable around her. He can't help that when she's in danger his mind goes blank and he pushes her out of the way, she should be disposable and he shouldn't care if something happens to her, but for a single moment that's his sister and she's in danger and he has to protect her because he can't lose Martel again.

He hates her for looking so much like Martel because she was supposed to become Martel and she didn't, she's just one failure in a long list, but when he looks at her he sees his sister and it stirs up all of those positive feelings he associated with Martel, and at the same time he sees how many times he's failed to bring his sister back to life and it infuriates him.

Context: Mael is pissy Garren essentially tortured a version of him in a fractal into becoming a demon (for the good of Tyria, but also something something, don't accidentally create a self-fulfilling prophecy) He then tried to kill Garren in an elaborate murder/suicide scheme, failed, got put in jail, got some theraphy, and now we have two exceedingly powerful magical immortals locked in a petty shitstorm because both of them know the other won't/can't kill them at the time as to not further endanger the future of Tyria.

Trust me, this was the TLDR. XD Also some context abt how I feel about Garren as a character in the tags 👍

You know what's really a heartbreaking fact that's just too painful for me ...

Natsume's inability to picture or comprehend a "Happy Reiko" :/

He so desire and wish to see her truly happy for once in her life since all he saw of her was her tragic and lonely life as of yet ..

Which's why I find it painful that even when he ACTUALLY see a trully happy Reiko he always goes "I don't know this person" or "funny that she reminded me of Reiko"

He saw her like this 2 times .. yet in both he never seen her as Reiko .. the first time was in hazy dream without her signature school uniform .. so in a way that's understandable

Yet in the recent chapter the picture was clearly Reiko no "what if" about it but he can't register her as such .. because he can't picture it ..

Maybe in a way he's protecting himself unconsciously because as I said he so desire this deeply .. so if he was mistaken and this isn't Reiko in the end .. the emotional damage would be heavy for him. that's why he's doubtful and always plays the "remind me of Reiko" without him realizing it himself and only hold his wishful thinking ...

And in both cases Madara wasn't there to either confirm or deny it for him ..

I even don't know if Natsume is ready for whatever await him regarding Reiko's past .. will he survive the hidden truth ??

Maybe because he isn't yet.. his inner self is protecting him like this ..
