Ageing – Some Factors
Biological ageing is the result of the effects of a collection of a range of molecular and cellular damage over the lifespan, leading to a growing risk of disease and eventually death. These changes have no linear relationship with one's age and are only loosely related to age. Common ageing conditions include loss of hearing, cataracts and other ocular issues, back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, depression and dementia.
Ageing in the skin is induced by both congenital and outside factors. This intrinsic ageing of the skin is a physiological process that results in the skin becoming thinner and dryer with the presence of fine wrinkles increasing, and gradual dermal atrophy. Comparatively, this extrinsic ageing is triggered by external environmental factors like air pollution, smoking, poor diet and nutrition, and sun exposure(UV rays exposure). These can result in coarse wrinkles forming, loss of skin elasticity, laxity, and a rough-textured appearance of the skin.
Some of the factors that are the basis of ageing are as follows.
(i) Genetics: Ageing is related to genetic mutations which are related to the long-term survival of humans. Ageing is associated with the accumulation of genetic mutations that can not be repaired and is related to the late effects of certain genes(these are referred to as pleiotropic antagonism). Telomeres are found at the ends of our chromosomes and they degrade throughout the lifespan each time division occurs due to the Hayflick limit.

A nutritionally dense diet, high in fruits and vegetables, is associated with greater telomerase activity. The deterioration of stem cell functions associated with age may play a key role in the pathophysiology of various ageing-associated disorders.
(iii) Autophagy: Autophagy is a major protein turnover pathway by which cellular parts are transported to lysosomes to be broken down and recycled. This intracellular process can maintain cellular homeostasis under stressful conditions, and its dysregulation could lead to the development of physiological impairments. Autophagic activity tends to decrease with age, which results in an accumulation of damaged macromolecules and organelles at high ages, due to lysosomes being less able to break down cell parts into their constituent components. Failure of the autophagic process can also worsen ageing-associated diseases(e.g. neurodegeneration, cancer, etc.). Thus, maintaining proper autophagic activity can contribute to increased longevity and therefore a greater life expectancy.
