I want to use the switch lite cause it's more easily portable than the oled is~~ and its 200 grams lighter~~ and has a d pad~~~ and the screen is more crisp cause it's smaller and the same resolution~~~ but the battery is garbage~~ and I paid scalpers for it during covid when the coral one was released~~~

I feel like I should use it just cause I paid scalpers for it.

The First Try

The First Try By Dr. Rachel Kildair (followed by an alphabet or two of titles). As usual, transcribed from her memorized notes once she had joined the Temporal League. I believe it was machines due to the low probability that any organic or similar life would survive that long, at least not as we know them. What I do know is that some encoded knowledge from that time was seeded on our very world, most likely in the event that created our moon. That this knowledge from the far future came to our world in pre-history is confirmed, of course. That is why I am now drafting this report. The primordials have caused the original source of many unexplained phenomena to resurface, including the basics of what many might call “magic” (see Magic). I posit that the first universe was not that different from our own, but that many of the phenomena we take for granted now were not evident. A small percentage of humans (and an even smaller percentage of other animals and a paltry few plants) have some form of power beyond that of others of their genome. We have developed certain technologies that I don’t believe would be possible in the First Try, or at least are now possible much earlier, such as ships that can break light speed, tachyon sensors, and even androids that can pass the Turing Test (see file: John E. Cache). Of course, some of this technology may lead to the destruction of life as we know it on Earth, but such is the risk of advancement in the universe as it is (see the Hindsight Event). The breaking of causality by these events may prove to be an even greater threat to reality as a whole than the primordials. They, at least, appear to be isolated to our world, and if we fall to them, perhaps they will remain so. Hopefully, we will eliminate them. As violent and destructive as humans can be, I believe we (I am including myself in that number for this, since I am unique but closer to humanity than anything else) would be less so should we reach the stars. In any event, I believe that, to ensure that we reach the best possible end to the universe, we need to begin now. Small changes now may reverberate through the timeline to preserve some elements of our time in whatever comes next, even if it is a third (note: Or perhaps greater, I am not certain how many times this has actually happened) loops. Whatever the engine of survival in that far off time, we certainly need to make sure it comes into existence, and the paltry few decades of our head star this time will make little difference. As such, I have begun drafting the technology that will be necessary to have consciousness survive when easily used energy and matter have become vanishingly rare. Perhaps, with the advantages we have on this pass, we can even improve on results. Or, perhaps, those same advantages will prove disastrous. (Note: After transferring her reports to the systems in Nowhen (see: Nowhen), Dr. Kildair indicated that she briefly used this reasoning to retroactively justify her many crimes. The Joker x Reader - “A.N.N.I.E.”

Mister J had Annie already, he probably bought her as a toy for Kase when it first emerged on the market. The rumor is that while Y/N was in a coma he kidnapped scientists and forced them to work on a senseless project: transferring her conscience inside Annie.”

“You’re shitting me!” Mickel exclaims at the insane disclosure.

“Nope.”

“Can’t be done; it’s impossible!”

“And who’d dare explain the obvious to him, huh? Not the researchers he killed the moment she stopped breathing if you get my drift.”

“That’s messed up!” Mickel forcefully exhales, infinitely more nervous about being at The Penthouse for the moment.

“Do you remember the serial murders that shook Gotham 3 months ago?” Zariah has more gossip for his partner. “It was Mister J hunting down every single person that was on the roof the day Y/N jumped.”

“We shouldn’t be here,” the anxious Mickel shrugs. “Maybe we should abandon our mission.”

“Bulshit! They’ll pay us double over anything he offers so don’t be a pussy! Speaking of, you should assemble the guns prior to his return!”

Mickel is reluctant to the whole scenario, yet he compiles the two guns out of items resembling computer parts scattered in their suitcases: that’s how they were able to deceive security.

“Done,” he stashes one finished weapon under his jacket, offering the other to Zariah.

“Remain calm and we’ll be ok,” the latest mumbles. “Let’s pretend we’re here to repair this junk.”

A couple more minutes pass by and The Joker’s presence alongside his offspring makes the two guys cringe.

The little boy hides behind his father’s legs, shyly glancing the android’s way.

“Don’t be scared,” J grumbles. “She’s in power saving mode, it’s fine.”

“Yes, it’s perfectly safe,” Zariah winks. “We are almost done extracting all the data,” he gestures at the laptop’s screens.

Kase giggles and rushes to climb on Annie’s knees, excited to see her after she wasn’t allowed to sleep in his room last night which is understandable since the robot went bonkers.

“Hi Y/N,” the child softly pulls on her long hair. “I want waffles pwease.”

The hackers exchange meaningful glares and The Joker replies:

“She can’t for now,” he mutters. “She’s defective. Frost will take you out for breakfast, alright?”

“Does it hurt?” the 5 year old pouts at his parent’s affirmation: he doesn’t comprehend all the words and it’s difficult for a kid to process the concept of transference.

After Y/N died, The Joker told Kase she moved inside Annie: he wasn’t delusional about his failed experiment but it was easier to make his son cope with the loss of the woman that raised him. J doesn’t literally believe there’s any trace of Y/N in the machine: how could it be? Several months passed and nothing proved what he tried to accomplish succeeded: a twisted concept originating from a distorted mind was doomed from the start.

“It doesn’t hurt,” The Clown Prince of Crime sighs. “She’s resting.”

“Sir, I think you should see this,” Mickel gets his attention.

“What am I looking at?”

“You used voice command to lock down the android?” Zariah pinpoints at the monitor to his left.

“I did.”

“That’s not what turned off the system: see the numbers flowing borderline with the  central matrix, the tiny squares? She wasn’t locked down by external command, she was terminated from within.”

“What do you mean?!” Mickel scoots over in his rolling chair, baffled.

“Somebody trespassed the firewall,” his accomplice utters the obvious.

J is less than happy with the random discovery still he requires confirmation of his suspicion.

“Meaning?”

“Annie, I mean Y/N is the recipient of a cyber-attack: she’s been hacked.”

“Hacked?” J scoffs. “What for? She’s just a companion android, it doesn’t make any sense.”

“Not sure, sir…” Zariah lifts his shoulders up, baffled.

“Can you find the source?” the green haired individual suggests.

“Analyzing the algorithm shows puzzling results: these numbers should be repeating themselves every so often, yet they don’t; never seen anything like it and I’ve been dealing with computers for a long time,” Mickel adds. “The most interesting detail is certainly challenging our expertise: tracking the root of the signal is pretty much unachievable. We should see input bouncing around from different servers because this is how hackers disguise their trail; but… this particular livestream happened simultaneously from various servers around the country.”

“There’s practically 0% chance for such abnormal hacking with today’s technology!” Zariah scrunches up his face at the baffling discovery. “How in the world was it done?!”

“You’re the experts!” The Joker barks. “I hired you based on strong recommendations from others that used your skills. Can you fix her or not?!”

“Of course, sir.”

“Yes!” the two associates ease The Clown’s doubt. “We’ll unplug the cables, we already removed all necessary info.”

Kase watches them detach the cords from Annie’s access ports, the child sulking at their action.

“Y/N, does it hurt?” he asks and hops off her lap. The empty shell doesn’t respond since the robot is in power saving mode.

“It doesn’t hurt,” The King of Gotham duplicates his earlier statement. “Frost!” he addresses the henchman entering the living room. “Take him to our restaurant on Madison Avenue for breakfast then he can play at the property on Foster Creek until we are done here. I want a 3 cars escort.”

“Yes, boss. I’ll call in advance and tell them not to open the place until we’re done.”

“Good,” J agrees with his henchman’s proposal. “Kase, go and eat!” he urges the offspring having a few more secrets to share with Annie. “Come on, let’s go!” the impatient father encourages.

The 5 year old obeys and kisses Annie’s cheek, whispering:

“I’ll bwing you beck’fast auntie, ok?” and he rushes at Frost’s side screaming up a storm. “Byeeeee daaaaaddy!!!”

The programmers are so absorbed by the mystifying enigma they stumbled upon by accident they don’t pay attention to the little nugget’s promise: even if they would, Zariah and Mickel wouldn’t be able to untangle the convoluted riddle of Y/N’s true identity.

She wasn’t The Joker’s girlfriend nor Kase’s mother: Y/N was nothing less than The Clown’s younger sister.

The woman protected the only family she had like a hawk, thus she didn’t hesitate to give her life in exchange for her nephew’s.

Too bad she had no idea those jerks were mocking her when she ended up on that accursed roof.  

Too bad her brother didn’t guess their intentions and extremely regrettable he was left alone without the only person he ever trusted.

Too bad she died granted J’s desperate efforts to keep her with him.

And so sad he didn’t know how much Y/N meant to him until she was gone.

“Isn’t it weird someone breached my android in the same time it was malfunctioning and closed her down?…” J stares outdoors on the terrace. “Why would anyone go through the trouble?... What’s the purpose?”

The familiar click of safety being taken off a gun awakens The Joker from apathy and he turns around: it’s not easy to surprise J but he’s stunned to notice the two experts he recruited pointing guns at him.

“What the fuck are you doing?!”

“Cashing in a huge payday, sir,” Zariah sneers. “It’s not often you become a legend for murdering…”

The Joker is not listening, his attention diverted by the strange phenomenon occurring behind the two hackers threatening his life: Annie is standing up from her chair and that’s clearly not possible; she is in power saving mode!

The android grabs Mickel’s arm and twists it to 90 degrees, using his own pistol to blow his brains out. Before Zariah can react he’s knocked to the ground with such violence J starts backing out, unsure on what to do when Annie steps on the man’s neck.

The sound of fractured bone plus the cyborg’s attention clearly directed towards him now makes him shout:

“Code 71345, emergency override!”

“Access denied!” the robot approaches still calibrating its joints and electronic synapses.

What the hell is wrong with this thing?!

“Code 71345, emergency override!”

J wants to make a run for it but he’s aware Annie is faster; why is she glitching like this?! 

“Code 71…”

“Why are you trying to shut me down when I tried so hard to come back to you?” the cold voice halts the rest of his sentence.

The Joker takes a strenuous breath, dumbfounded at the shocking revelation:

“Y/N?... … Is… is… that you?!... …”

The android tilts its head to the left while an eerie smile flourishes on the plastic lips:

“Missed me?”

My dude!! I’ve acquired a laptop!! Do you have any idea how to begin making mods or transferring them to a wii/wii u (my plans involve doing a skyward sword run which I call “maximum casualties” but I want to throw in some mods to make it more interesting and also doingbreath of the wild mods; I have the screenshot from the last question I asked and I’ve looked up Cemu by now but I’d like to get more into this if possible and I hardly know how to use this new laptop cuz it’s my first one like ever kdjdjsn lmao

I thought i ought to include the screenshot also for reference just in case also I’m sorry if this is weird or something I’m not sure cuz I’ve had a bit of A Day(tm) and I hope this at least makes sense lmao

holy shit, congrats on getting a laptop! don’t be afraid to explore it and have a bit of fun. if you haven’t got them already i reccomend getting speccy and ccleaner (partly bc the former will be handy later on w/ cemu). im gonna put the rest of this under the cut bc it is going to get preetttttty long, so brace yourself :^)

Wii hacking:

Okay, first thing is that I have never actually hacked a Wii so I am woefully lacking in knowledge on that, but there are some really good guides such as Wii Guide and this really good thread on GBAtemp.

in terms of mods for Skyward Sword there is a handful but it’s mostly recolours - however if you’re willing to get into another emulator, Dolphin, you can use a wiimote and there are HD texture mods which are pretty sweet

WiiU hacking:

the WiiU hacks guide has been invaluable and is a collab between a bunch of homebrew helpers and staff, and helps you through choosing a custom firmware depending on how you want to approach it.

Along with this, the “Definitive vWii Hacking Guide” has everything laid out, step by step, and is written as though the reader is completely new to it so is imo the easiest to really get stuck in with

Word of warning - hacking your console does run the risk of bricking it.

Cemu + emulating BoTW:

This is the bit i’m most familiar with :^) this is piracy though so i understand if it’s not for you

we want to start with getting the game - this can be done via dumping with hacking your WiiU as above (the legal-ish way), by finding a torrent/download (outdated, not as safe, not legal), or by using the WiiU USB helper (also not legal, less time consuming, safer than torrents)

so i’ll walk you through door number 3 in that case - the WiiU USB Helper. The guide linked there gives you the download for the installer, and also a video as a visual guide. 

This can also be used to transfer games to the WiiU but for now we’re focusing on emulation, which this comes packed with already.

Set an extraction and a download folder using the buttons on the bottom (I just have them both in a folder called WiiU games for ease)

Find the game you want to download and press “add” - with BoTW it will prompt you to download the updates and the dlc as well - and start downloading!

when it’s finished it will be under the header of “Downloaded” - highlight it and it’ll show the details off to the side, where you will find the option to play the game on pc

by hitting that it’ll start the extraction, which automatically makes the game playable on Cemu - the helper does that for you, and may just ask which version you want

after the extraction Cemu should automatically open but if it does you can find the .exe in \”where u put the extraction folder”\DATA\EMULATORS\Cemu\BIN

If for some reason you downloaded an earlier version you can go into the settings and tick the box to look for updates when its booted up

Last thing for this section: to get the best performance I highly recommend BSoD Gaming’s Cemu setup guide! He knows just about all there is to know in regards to this stuff and I use his guides myself even now. This is where the Speccy from the top of this behemoth will come in handy, since you will need to see how many cpu cores you have when he goes through his step-by-step guide. You do this by booting up Speccy and going to CPU on the list to the left, where it will tell you how many cores and threads you have.

Modding, Console and Cemu:

Console:

Thankfully Gamebanana has a decent amount of help in regards to this. It is more complicated to mod the game on console but this guide for installation instructions goes through each way to do it, with example packs too.

There is also the Zeldamods wiki but that can be a bit dense imo

Cemu:

For Cemu, first we need to get the BCML mod loader from the gamebanana page. The latest version, 3.0.0 is mostly stable now and is pretty versatile, just a bit slow.

All you need first is the latest Visual C++ redis which can be found here, as the installer at the bottom of the page has it all packaged in

the setup guide is fairly straightforward, but when you get to the bit where it asks for directories, it can seem confusing, but hover over the entries and it’ll have a brief explanation

when it comes to the update entry it will depend on whether you have an EU or US version, so if it isn’t in the suggested “101c9400", it may be in “101c9500″ (I run EU version)

when they are all ticked green go forward and you will have your empty list in BCML so time to get some mods!

Modding time!:

Back to Gamebanana, it’s where the majority of worthwhile mods are held and there is also a discord and tool if you wish to start creating them yourself, but I suggest playing around first :^)

Find a mod you like, eg the Zelda’s Ballad mod, and read through the page as there are sometimes certain requirements needed, until you get to the downloads

If there is a BCML 1-click install option, go for that. If not, manual download and you can add it to the mod loader using the little plus sign in the bottom right and browsing for the file

On the little pop up on the mod loader, hit install and it’ll start it’s magic by installing and enabling the mod(s)

Now - sometimes mods don’t play too nicely with each other, such as using multiple skins for the same item or character, and some of the overworld building mods can be buggy. Sometimes these can be fine just by restarting Cemu, sometimes you need to go through your modlist and root out the cause.

Another note is that if you look at your graphic packs when you boot up Cemu, under Mods you’ll see a box with BCML. Leave that checked for the most part, and if you want to disable mods I recommend going through the mod loader.

But wait, there’s more:

If you want to go even deeper, there is also Cheat Engine and there has been a cheat table released for BoTW on Cemu which runs alongside the game. This is how I’ve been able to do item replacements, but you can basically make Link go godmode with infinite hearts etc

The cheat table can be found here, and the video on how to add custom values can be found here - but I recommend getting to grips with the other stuff before this as it has more potential to mess up saves.

A tabard of dark leather was draped over the shimmering sea blue and emerald green of his power armor, a mismatch of scavenged parts and types. A three headed hydra curled about his pauldron, leaving no doubt to his gene lineage. Every movement caused the countless vials and instruments strapped about his form to rattle and clank or bubble with unknown liquids. The only weapons he seemed to carry was a simple bolt pistol locked to one hip and the narthecium gauntlet about his right arm. His retinue was a different story altogether. It had been a surprise to the Eternal Keepers when the modified heavy transport vessel had approached them in the Eye, even more so when it’s master hailed them with a request to meet their leader. But Icarus had seen something in the strange Apothecary and agreed to bring him before the goddess. Jaego brought along a number of mutant slaves, a tribute from the hardy stock cultivated by his work. Escorting him and herding the mutant slaves were a number of mortals, clad in scavenged fatigues and piecemeal fall armor, wielding an assortment of weapons both imperial, xenos, and some unknown. These mortals were different than the cultists or mutants of other warbands, moving with strange synchronization and conversing in what sounded like a mix of barks, snarls, and howls. Only Furio had any clue about the truth, having clashed with their kind before. They were Gland Hounds- monsters crated by the hands of Chief Apothecary Fabius Bile to hunt Space Marines, not a gift given lightly. The whispered rumor was that his ship was also crewed with the robes and rebreather masked Vat Born creatures known to serve those of the Consortium. Apparently this one had some ties to Clonefather. Jaego came to a halt, turning his eye lenses upon the Fifth Goddess and briefly dipped his head. His voice was dry and raspy, like hot air being pushed through dusty tubes. “My lady, allow me to say it is an honor to be allowed entrance to your sacred domain. I am Jaego Nul, son of Alpharius Omegon, student of the Consortium.” Fuuko sat upon the throne in her mortal form, backed by those champions who were not currently away. “I would be a fool to turn away a guest who has roused my..... curiosity... in such a manner. Why have you sought me out?” A sharp wheeze escaped the cox speakers and it was a moment before they realized he was laughing. “My lady I thought it would be obvious. I am a student of universe, learning how to shape the flesh in the i infinite possibilities it can reach. Here in your vaults you possess endless knowledge untapped by any scholar. Treatises long lost, specimens thought extinct, countless new and varying genomes to explore and study.” His words dripped with an insatiable hunger, a desire for such hidden knowledge, an avarice so great it might consume him. “Of course I would not dare to come empty handed. Greed recognized greed, for Jaego was ensnared in her power long before he ever reached her domain. “Go make some monsters little fleshcrafter. Strengthen all my children to new heights. Seek the knowledge you so desperately crave.” Jaego bowed again, lower this time even as his fingers twitched with anticipation. “Right away my lady!”

With the devoted labor of the vat born and shock-prodded muscle of the mutants the immense amount of equipment began an efficient transference. Jaego had found wing of the Vaults that seemed perfect for the setup of his laboratory. Had it always been here or had the warp space molded to suit his desires? It was a question he might pursue later as he scraped a sample from the wall and handed it to a vat born, pausing to pay the mutant on it’s hooded head with somewhat paternal affection. The Chief Apothecary has been inspired with the initial template but these were of a breed Jaego had cultivated himself, tweaking to his own design. Perhaps it was Fabius own affection for his creations that had rubbed off on his student during the time with the Consortium. He was drawn from his thoughts as two of his gland hounds, Kreia and Vlad, dragged a squirming mortal into the lab to shackle him to one of the tables. The mortal was a male cultist, Caucasian and blonde, perhaps of Ultramar genetic stock. He was showing signs of mutation, the buds of horns sprouting from his forehead and several small eyes blinking along his collar bone. Already Jaego could see the wonders he would work upon this mortal flesh for his new mistress even as he began dictating a record to another vat born waiting with data pad and stylus. The narthecium bone saw whirred and Jaego loomed over his subject, heedless of the man’s screams. “Let’s begin shall we?”

Biologists uncover forests' unexpected role in climate change

New research from West Virginia University biologists shows that trees around the world are consuming more carbon dioxide than previously reported, making forests even more important in regulating the Earth’s atmosphere and forever shift how we think about climate change.

In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Professor Richard Thomas and alumnus Justin Mathias (BS Biology, ’13 and Ph.D. Biology, ’20) synthesized published tree ring studies. They found that increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere over the past century have caused an uptick in trees’ water-use efficiency, the ratio of carbon dioxide taken up by photosynthesis to the water lost by transpiration — the act of trees “breathing out” water vapor.

“This study really highlights the role of forests and their ecosystems in climate change,” said Thomas, interim associate provost for graduate academic affairs. “We think of forests as providing ecosystem services. Those services can be a lot of different things — recreation, timber, industry. We demonstrate how forests perform another important service: acting as sinks for carbon dioxide. Our research shows that forests consume large amounts of carbon dioxide globally. Without that, more carbon dioxide would go into the air and build up in the atmosphere even more than it already is, which could exacerbate climate change. Our work shows yet another important reason to preserve and maintain our forests and keep them healthy.”

Previously, scientists have thought that trees were using water more efficiently over the past century through reduced stomatal conductance — meaning trees were retaining more moisture when the pores on their leaves began closing slightly under rising levels of carbon dioxide.

However, following an analysis using carbon and oxygen isotopes in tree rings from 1901 to 2015 from 36 tree species at 84 sites around the world, the researchers found that in 83% of cases, the main driver of trees’ increased water efficiency was increased photosynthesis — they processed more carbon dioxide. Meanwhile, the stomatal conductance only drove increased efficiency 17% of the time. This reflects a major change in how trees’ water efficiency has been explained in contrast to previous research.

“We’ve shown that over the past century, photosynthesis is actually the overwhelming driver to increases in tree water use efficiency, which is a surprising result because it contradicts many earlier studies,” Mathias said. “On a global scale, this will have large implications potentially for the carbon cycle if more carbon is being transferred from the atmosphere into trees.”

Since 1901, the intrinsic water use efficiency of trees worldwide has risen by approximately 40% in conjunction with an increase of approximately 34% in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Both of these characteristics increased approximately four times faster since the 1960s compared to the previous years.

While these results show the rise in carbon dioxide is the main factor in making trees use water more efficiently, the results also vary depending on temperature, precipitation and dryness of the atmosphere. These data can help refine models used to predict the effects of climate change on global carbon and water cycles.

“Having an accurate representation of these processes is critical in making sound predictions about what may happen in the future,” Mathias said. “This helps us get a little closer to making those predictions less uncertain.”

The study is a product of the researchers’ seven-year research collaboration during Mathias’ time as a doctoral student. After graduating from WVU, Mathias joined University of California, Santa Barbara as a postdoctoral researcher.

“Since moving to California, my work has taken a turn from being in the field, collecting measurements, analyzing data and writing manuscripts,” Mathias said. “My new position is more focused on ecological theory and ecosystem modeling. Instead of measuring plants, I form hypotheses and seek out answers to questions using computer models and math.”

In the future, Mathias aspires to become a professor at a research university to continue these research pursuits.

“I would love to run my own lab at a university, mentor graduate students and pursue research questions to continue building on the work we’ve already accomplished. There’s been a lot of progress in our field. There are also an infinite number of questions that are relevant moving forward,” Mathias said. “I owe everything to my time and training from the people at WVU. My long-term goal is to be in a position where I can continue moving the field forward while giving back through teaching and mentoring students.”

The United Nations has described the global scale and pace of education disruption from COVID-19 as “unparalleled”. Across the world, over a billion students are not attending a physical school campus, with numbers increasing each day. Education officials at all levels, in addition to parents, are attempting to keep students engaged and learning at home through a variety of modes. However, amid all the fear, panic and unknowns, new channels of innovation, creativity and systemic transformation are also accelerating at unprecedented levels.

School systems have been forced to rethink conventional learning models, and rapidly build, test and pilot new structures to accommodate a completely different reality. One of our Series One Game Changers Yong Zhao recently said this via his blog: “Online education cannot replace all functions schools play in our society, but it can do a lot more than being a lesser version of face-to-face schooling.” When the dust settles, COVID-19 may present itself as a microcosm of what’s to come. A new mainstream, for doing schooling differently.

The Aurora Institute in America describes the traditional model of K-12 education system as a “veritable monolith in which each student’s learning journey follows a single path at a single pace.” Modernising our education system means moving away from an industrial age “one-size-fits- all” model in which teachers stand and deliver and learners sit and get.

In their Workforce of the future: The competing forces shaping 2030 report Price Waterhouse and Coopers (PwC) identified the megatrends shaping our future, today. Swift advances in technological innovation, demographic shifts, rapid urbanisation, shifts in global and economic power, resource scarcity and climate change are the tremendous forces reshaping society. And to thrive, education needs to be open to re-casting the purpose of schooling as we, collectively, shape our own destiny, with adaptability the key to the future. Blair Sheppard, Global Leader, Strategy and Leadership Development at PwC said, “So what should we tell our children? That to stay ahead, you need to focus on your ability to continuously adapt, engage with others in that process, and most importantly retain your core sense of identity and values. For students, it’s not just about acquiring knowledge, but about how to learn. For the rest of us, we should remember that intellectual complacency is not our friend and that learning – not just new things but new ways of thinking – is a life-long endeavour.”

Those school leaders and educational sectors that understand potential futures, and what each might mean for them, and have the courage to plan ahead, will be the best prepared to support young people to succeed and flourish in the obvious reality of a new tomorrow. We need to re-examine the purpose of schooling for our times and ensure that it is based on the facts and best predictions about the impact of this relentless change.

This then shines a spotlight on learning and why, what and how of what matters for this new world environment. Teachers and school leaders will need to alter the way we think about how our students learn and the environments in which we encourage this learning to take place. None of this is really complicated—it just requires us to abandon the binary thinking around what learning is and start to be open to doing schooling differently. It is increasingly becoming more and more obvious that the mission of childhood education can no longer be the generation of standardised test data, but learning powered by the physical, mental health and emotional competency and wellbeing of every student and every teacher. To equip today’s students to thrive in the workplace of 2030 and beyond, a whole new curriculum competency framework is needed: one that centres on foundational literacies (ways of knowing), capability skills (ways of thinking) and character attributes (ways of being). Literacy and numeracy will continue to be the building blocks on which all learning rests. And strong discipline knowledge still matters, not so students can regurgitate facts, but because it is fundamental to deep understanding, robust thinking skills and the ability to learn and transfer through application.

In May 2005 David Foster Wallace gave the commencement address at Kenyon College. He started his speech with this little parable about fish and water:

There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says "Morning, boys. How's the water?" And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes "What the hell is water?"

Then Foster Wallace brings the audience to a renewed consciousness around this construct of the obvious:

The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day.

That is real freedom. That is being educated and understanding how to think. The alternative is unconsciousness, the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing.

It is about the real value of a real education, which has almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple awareness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over: "This is water." "This is water."

I really like how Kyle Kowalski, founder of Sloww describes his three profound life lessons from This is Water by David Foster Wallace:  

Our default setting - it’s easy, automatic and comfortable. It’s basically our unconscious bias.

Choice & thinking - you have control and therefore a choice of how and what to think. You can choose to look at anything in life differently than the default setting. 

Awareness & consciousness - staying present, paying attention and conscious to the obvious truth in front of us.

Now, I do not consider myself the wise old fish, of course not. But much like the point of the fish story, I am merely attempting to state the most obvious, important realities of our new world environment and help all teachers and school leaders to see learning and schooling through a new lens, creating a dialogue of what’s possible.

During this global pandemic l have been inspired and encouraged by the actions of many individual educators and learning communities to rethink what education can be and should be in the future.

What is an E-Business? The term E-business has evolved from the simple abbreviation of “electronic business.” It is a top level term referring to methods of utilising digital information and communication technologies to support or streamline business processes. Our roots in E-Business Our primary E-Business inspiration came at the beginning of our Internet journey at the Live - 95 event in London. Having sat through a number demo’s and speeches from various providers, we realised that the simple concepts of electronic communication and data transfer offered fantastic life efficiency opportunities - not just business. We were already looking at application of collaborative tools such as communication and document management systems - in the form of Internet connected bulletin boards. In 1998 I actually graduated from Anglia University having designed and created a similar system for my dissertation/project entitled - Worldwide Communications. Having dialled in and had a play - the lecturer did not appear to see the relevance to the Automotive Engineering Degree - he said he doubted the collaborative approach to information sharing would be likely to catch-on and he did not perceive any significant benefit. I didn’t argue - but I did forward the 8 page document published in the Wall Street Journal on 7th October 1997, by IBM - they used E-Business as the term to describe how they believed corporate systems would fundamentally change in the digital era. Suffice to say it caught on. As we begin to embrace todays opportunities - the initial strategic thinking back in the 90s is fundamental, as it reminds us of the potential scope of E-Business. They said - E-Business is 'redesigning strategic business processes and meeting the challenges of a new market increasingly characterised by globalisation, and based on new knowledge.’ Luckily they decided against patenting the term in the hope that other companies such as ours would engage with the concept and help to form a new industry.Capitalising on E-Business Solutions Fast forward to 2020 - E-Commerce is a widely used term, however - aligned to our strategic thinking from back in the 90s - whilst it does describe the commercial transactions in buying and selling it is still just one possible E-Business Component. In 2002 we built our first web based application server, designed to provide E-Business services, capitalising on web based solutions - to replace previous paper based equivalents, in an infinitely more efficient way.
