If someone put a gun to my head and made me choose what I thought the best thing I've written over the years has been*, it would probably be that article, with "Brújula" (about the LBJ/Lady Bird marriage) and "Camel Clutch" (about spending time with the Iron Sheik) right behind it. I've always been proud of those pieces and wish I still knew how to write like that.

(*I'm not sure why someone would feel the need to put a gun to my head for that particular reason, though. That seems like a dangerous overreaction and remarkably unnecessary.)

When Pro Wrestling Was Sadistic

Nice torture scene by the Original Sheik on muscle-jobber Yvon Laverdure from 1970s International Wrestling out of Montreal. The Sheik holds onto his Camel Clutch long after the point of submission, only letting the beaten man go when the ref forces the issue.

The match is over, so why does this cruel Heel see the need to put the beaten man in that back-breaking hold?! Somebody needs to rescue this poor stud before the Sheik injures him!

This is outrageous! How can we stop this cruel maniac?!

Just the sort of troubling, triggering, brutal content that kept this young wrestling fan tuning in every Saturday afternoon for more delicious mayhem.

Which Tumblr post of yours are you most proud of?

Oh, I don't know. I've been posting on Tumblr almost since Tumblr was created, so I'm sure I've forgotten about 98% of the things I've posted. I'm proud of some of the original, longform pieces I've written over the years, like the Iron Sheik essay that I reposted a few months ago when he passed away.

I think the three major JFK essays I posted on the 50th anniversary of his assassination -- 11.22.1963: One Minute in Dallas, Waking Up in Dallas, and Burial at Sea: The Odyssey of JFK's Original Casket -- is some of the best work I've done. My story about Theodore Roosevelt's first wife and mother dying on the same day in the same house, "The Light Has Gone Out of My Life", is a good one. I'm pretty proud of my essays about George H.W. Bush being shot down by the Japanese during World War II and "What Have I Done?", which is about Nixon's final hours as President. And the longer pieces I've written about Franklin Pierce (Pierce and the Consequences of Ambition, In Concord: The Friendship of Franklin Pierce and Nathaniel Hawthorne, and "When Tears and Toil and Conflict Will Be Unknown") and LBJ (The Johnson Treatment and Brújula) are among my favorites.
