We all burned out in our twenties because they taught us to "Chase our Dreams" when we were kids. But humans are persistence predators, so we just ran out of energy mid hunt and watched as our dreams galloped away in front of us.

Jake ❤️ A different kind of beauty than Blu. Blu's an attention grabber for sure, Jake was beautiful in his own way, but a word that described him well was handsome. Kingly looking sometimes, Blu has a bit more trouble pulling off that look! 🤣

So I had a FUN LITTLE DISCOVERY about Facebook today!
So today I decided to go ahead and private as much as my Facebook as possible. Why? Because the less I have to interact with it, the better. Literally the only reason I don't delete it is because I use it to keep in contact with my D&D group who won't use Discord for some cursed reason and I do have some old memories on there with a couple of friends that are nostalgic. And while I was referring to an article which had some steps for how to do so, I came across this little gem:
To which I said, "What do you mean OFF Facebook activity??? What OFF Facebook activity would FACEBOOK be tracking???" So I followed those steps and went in there and pulled up the list of information it had stored and LO and fucking behold! Apparently Facebook has been tracking a BUNCH of shit that I've been doing online EVEN though my Facebook is registered with my old-ass hotmail account and almost everything I do online is through my modern gmail. Also, I VERY INTENTIONALLY don't have FB installed on my phone, so it is VERY much separated from anything I do. And not just my searches, oh no no. It has been monitoring a WHOLE BUNCH of fun stuff including tracking my doordash orders, etsy orders and searches, shopping on zenintcg, the fact that we have insurance through Allstate, even my old fucking HINGE dating profile which I haven't even USED since like 2018 but apparently they've been getting updates on as recently as last year.
Seriously the ONLY thing Facebook should know about on this list is Grand Summoners, because it used to use FB to log in. NOTHING ELSE had anything to do with my hotmail, or FB. This is all information that FB obtained independently without my consent.
SO THAT'S FAN-TUCKING-FASTIC. I'm just... such a fan of that!
So for any of y'all who you know, DON'T want this corporation who is known for mishandling and selling user information to have information that it obtained about you without your consent outside of its platform, I suggest you follow those steps above to disable that. Currently it takes you to a secondary page where you you will need to follow these additional steps to Disconnect from Future Activity:
So yeah maybe spread the word because this is sure news to me and BOY AM I PISSED. Like I expect this from Google. Google tracking my searches or whatever makes sense in a hell on earth capitalist society way. Amazon tracking what you search on Alexa (or say within the same room as Alexa), sure. But Facebook finding my information even though it's associated with a different email address and not through its platform? THAT is just insane and malicious to me. I feel like a tin hat lunatic that's like "the social media's secretly trackin' me and stealin' my information!" except this time they actually ARE.
#facebook#social media#data privacy#online privacy#privacy#internet privacy#we live in a dystopia#i am furious#I feel like a tin hat lunatic#i feel violated

I feel like I am extremely desensitized to crime and graphic material. I have vivd memories of watching Forensic Files as a child. I watched the original Saw movie numerous times when it came out. I consume A LOT of true crime through podcasts and there just honestly isn't much that bothers me.
Today I was scrolling FB and there was a post in a book group I'm in about the most disturbing book you've ever read. A lot of people were saying No One Rides for Free which is a novella so I was intrigued. 70 or something pages so I was like let's see what this is all about. Won't waste a lot of time if I don't like it.
Y'all.
It was the most disgusting and visceral thing I've ever put my eyes on. I am not being dramatic when I say about 75% of the way through I threw up in my mouth. I couldn't finish it.
I'm truly concerned about the woman who wrote this story. Like how you could even come up with those kinds of things..... YIKES.
Even more concerned for the people who read it and said it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be.
Don't ever read it. Don't even try to look up what it's about. Trust me. I guess I do have a limit to what I can consume.

The Book of Face is pointless for me these days. For years it served a great purpose. I would post my kids and my sister would share the pics with my Grandmother. So that she could see the kids growing up. After she died that app really fell off my radar. Really the only think about it is checking FB memories. And today’s was a good one.
Today is the day I learned I grew up a city boy. One of my favorite stupid memories. 17 years ago today I was walking the Pugs at dawn and I saw a marvelous sight. I was so excited. I returned home and told my Wife. I got ready for work and drove with haste to tell all my coworkers. I got to work, gathered my Minions around to share the tale.
“Guess what I saw this morning?” I was smiling with enthusiasm. I couldn’t wait to see there shocked faces.
“I was walking the Pugs and I came up over a hill. And there they were. TURKEYS! A whole bunch of them”
They were not impressed. They then told me there are turkeys all over. I was crushed. In my Chicago brain, turkeys are livestock. And here my coworkers that lived in the “hill towns” told me that those birds are all over this part of New York. I was like “are you serious?” In my mind the chance of seeing a big fat Tom walking down the street was about the same as seeing a giraffe. They all laughed at me and we started our day.
Since then I have seen many turkeys and I am now indifferent to them. But it was this morning, years ago, where I learned I am no longer “city”. Now I have a bird feeder that brings many birds that I think are rare. Chicago just had crow, robins, and pigeons. I get excited every day I see deer in my yard. This year I had my first encounter with a ground hog. I appreciate the wildlife that comes through my Kingdom.
But I still anxiously await my first sighting of a moose. I’m dying to see one. I have a Canadien friend and she told me how big they are. I didn’t believe her when she told me. So I cannot wait to see that motherfucker one day. I just know if it is when I am hiking, it will probably kill me.

June 2023 Collection Update: The Iceberg
You know the comparison I'm making here. You start at the tip of the iceberg, and think it's not too bad, then you continue working your way down.... and it just keeps going, never seeming to stop. Well, I think I've made it past the surface of the iceberg, and am staring down the absolute scale of what remains submerged. So yeah, Mt. Everest is left to climb still, but I've also got a pretty sizeable hill behind me to share.
I'll start with a haul that came in today (and one I picked up yesterday). Used manga and light novels has been a gold mine for me lately, though you do have to be careful with some listings as you might get volumes in worse conditions than they appear (though most of the time not something sandpaper can't fix).
The No Game No Life was just sorta a bonus to the Is This A Zombie?, but it actually helped bring down the cost per volume thanks to a deal I made (always try and barter for a few dollars here and there through stuff like FB Marketplace and Mercari and the like). I'd been looking for Is This A Zombie? for a while though, and was incredibly excited to come across a completed set. Though I do wish they'd bring the light novels over.
Following this up, or I guess coming before it(?), was this very interesting manga haul which is best explained as a story.
Originally, I had found a dirt cheap Rosario to Vampire manga box set on Facebook Marketplace (to the tune of 90CAD), and asked about getting more pictures because the only image was of the outside of the box set. Seller doesn't respond for a week, and then sends the image out of nowhere. I talk about going through with the sale and getting a shipping label sorted out (cause even with shipping it'd be crazy cheap). They don't respond, at least not until Thursday of last week which was about another week's wait. They say "hey, I'm going to be in your city on Sunday, are you good to meet me to pick up the set?". Immediately, I feel like I'm either going to get scammed or mugged, but it was neither. They show up with the 90 dollar box set and I leave with all my organs and my wallet alongside the box set.
Now, onto a bit of explanation. As you could tell from the images above, I'm kinda running out of space. I know, I need to get another bookshelf to store it all on, but finding the right spot for it and getting a cheaper Billy is a PITA, so instead I've been putting that focus and effort into finding more and more cool sets and series.
Like this Reiko The Zombie Shop. It's an older Josei horror series which I thought was super cool, and when I found a listing for it for just around 10CAD a vol I jumped on it. It's a very interesting piece of history to have from Dark Horse as they only printed it to the halfway point, though it's also a very intriguing read. Leans very heavy into gore and that very "serious but not all that great" story.
Equal parts crazy and cool though, this Empty Box and Zeroth Maria set. If memory serves, it was less than 10CAD a volume for such a hard to find set. Unbelievably happy to have such a well maintained set in my collection, and am 100% going to be sharing the love/set with friends.
Just a side note, the seller I got it from was super cool, as I got a partial set of Konosuba from them as well for the same price. Once more, Facebook Marketplace, so if you're looking for good deals on used series, I can't recommend checking out what's around you enough.
The good deals just keep on coming, huh. Hit the jackpot with this Rose of Versailles set. I was just going to bide my time until the end of year Indigo hardcover sale, and see if I could try my luck on finding them in store at a good price, but came across this listing for 100CAD and immediately jumped on it, since it works out to be massively cheaper than the Indigo 30% off hardcovers they do at year's end.
And I have to say, Udon hardcovers are outstanding. The Rose of Versailles of course stands at the top with it's wonderfully intricate cover design and heavy and glossy paper, but their other titles are no slouches either.
Just take a look at this Summertime Rendering (and Darling In The Franxx) set. Sometimes you'll come across things you just can't refuse. This listing was one of them. Summertime Rendering and DiTF for less than the retail of Summertime Rendering. Good deal, especially when you factor in that DiTF is still sealed, and that the seller never read Summertime Rendering.
But at the same time, getting books in conditions like this feels a bit sad almost. The seller was getting rid of their collection because they needed to repay students loans, so a lot of it was untouched and at very cheap prices. If I were to go back and do it again, I probably would have just sent money to them rather than purchased the sets, as I feel somewhat guilty having these when I'm able to pay retail for them no problem. But I can't revisit the past, so at the very least I'm glad I had the humility to not try and work them down on price, and will certainly be reading them over and over (DiTF is still on the TBR list right now though).
And last but not least for the used hauls, this super weird set. I got the whole thing for 5CAD a volume, which is a pretty great deal, and includes a lot of interesting things. Hidamari Sketch (I refuse to call it Sunshine Sketch), GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class and Bamboo Blade (not shown), and this very odd helping of loose stuff that includes an old style Seven Seas LN, a child's manga, and a very unique volume from a defunct publisher.
I couldn't help but go for it when I saw the oddities and old series that were within. Hidamari Sketch in particular is a headache and a half to collect, and I'd never even seen a volume of Iono-Sama Fanatics before. Very cool stuff, and definitely things I wanted to share. I never even knew Seven Seas used to print light novels so small, and seeing the difference in paper quality circa Spring 2010 was very interesting as well.
Now, last but not least, Jojos. I waited a very long time to buy these at retail, and am incredibly sad that the box for Jojoveller came crumpled in that one corner (already talked it out with support, and got a refund on it), but thankfully the books inside are intact. But man, these things are cool as all hell, I'll absolutely be sharing a post of them (alongside Jojo 6521) down the road.
And that's where I am, collecting an insane number of series and art books, and continuing to realize just how wide this world of manga is that I've immersed myself in. It's incredibly daunting thinking about the numbers I'm racking up, but at the same time it's such an amazing hobby that I'm able to support. There's a world of stuff out there, and I want to experience that all.

So I just finished watching the new Fruits Basket series (yes I know it’s been out for awhile, I started it and stopped halfway because… reasons), and I just… I watched the original FB when I was an 8 or 9 year old kid. It was the second anime series I’d ever seen, the first being Angel Beats, both of which were shown to me by a girl I was once friends with.
At a time in my life where I felt like I had nobody, where I was abused at home and felt like I didn’t belong anywhere- she was there. She brought me to her home and opened a door to me that probably never would have opened without her.
For the first time in my life I could see myself striving to be like someone, someone who wanted to live and love and smile. For me, Tohru wasn’t just a silly girl on a tv show… she was somewhere I could go to escape my house, where I would be given kind words and badly made onigiri, listening to that girl talk about all the different anime she’d seen and the life she’d lived before me. Of the heartache and pain she’d already gone through, and the hope for better in the future. To me, that girl was my Tohru Honda. She was always smiling for me, always warm and comforting to be around; a clumsy girl, a lonely girl, the most beautiful girl.
Rewatching the series has reminded me of why I fell in love with that girl, of all the kind words she gave to me. She has no idea how much she saved my life, or about how much she’s shaped me into the person I am today. I was always too afraid to tell her, too scared to put into words the depth I felt for her at only 8 years old. Now that I am twenty two I feel I can finally move on, one heartbreak after another and still no one has measured up to her, to my Tohru, but I’ll keep looking. And one day I’ll find the person that brings me warmth and laughter and home.
This time, I won’t settle for less, or hide my feelings away. I was worried, ya know? About finishing the new series. I was worried that it wouldn’t do my heart justice, that for some reason if I saw the ending it would cause my sun filled memory to break away, that maybe I wouldn’t like it that much or even hate it and it would ruin the memories I had of Her.
I’m glad I finished it. I’m glad I told you I liked you, even if you didn’t really understand. I’ll still miss you, but I’m going to find my happiness now.
Thank you for reminding me of her, and the happiness she gave me. I really needed it right now. I hope others who watch this show can find their Tohru Honda, and hopefully they won’t let that person go. That kind of love is special, it fills your heart with longing and warmth, even if that person is gone for days or years.
Anyways, the series was really good. It lived up to my expectations… sorry for rambling. That’s what I came here to say.

Meanwhile, this came up in my FB memories today ... five years ago, sketching out the second half of S1 of Moonbase Theta, Out with an iced mocha close at hand. Oh, the places we'll go ... (also wow, I still did a lot of writing by hand then - now, almost never).

This came up in my fb memories today. I am struck by the lack of 'light' in his eyes. This picture was taken at the shelter and used on the shelter website. I have always talked about the light in Jake's eyes, he always projected happiness and joy. I'm glad we decided to go meet him after seeing this picture. Fate. Also we found out a year or two later that his birthday was in 2008, so he was suddenly about two and a half years older than we were led to believe. It was a heartbreaking moment, I still remember reading the email in the car on the freeway. We had Jake just shy of six years, and I am very grateful that we were the lucky ones who got him.

Came up in my FB memories for today nine years ago! That's my then-baby niece meeting my nicest, sweetest, most beloved, super maternal rat Miss Blatz, the only rodent I'd have ever trusted with an infant. And my niece loves rodents today!

9 Years ago today
I came home from working the night shift in the ER. I found my husband dead in the bathroom. It's one of those moments that is branded in my memory.
BUT, I also remember the acts of kindness and support that happened that day. After the EMTs pronounced Roger dead, I was waiting for the coroner's office to arrive. I'd called my brother already, but he lives an hour away. For some reason I went on FB and posted about what had happened in a private chat group with my former coworkers that I was close friends with. We had all been laid off, when the lab we worked in was closed in a buyout.
One of those friends arrived, before the body had even been removed. Jane had grown up the child of a family that were morticians. She took care of me until my family could get here. She talked me into waiting in the backyard while the body was removed. She told me I didn't want to see that. It took several firemen and the coroner's guys to get him out. He was a big guy. Jane cleaned up the blood from where he hit his head when he fell. She held me while I cried. She helped me decide not to call my kids yet. The girls both lived out of state, and my son was asleep since he worked nights. Jane was who made that morning bearable.
Hubby was supposed to go to lunch with a friend from the Apple Club that day. I called that friend, and he said he'd spread the word to the Club. That friend also came to the house to give me support.
My brother called the girls when he got here. The police were at the house, because it was "an unattended death." Once they left, my brother took me to my son's apartment, so we could tell him in person.
There were kind and loving people that on my Worst Day gave me love, friendship and support. It wasn't quite Joy, but it was comforting and a blessing.

Picture of Pashmina today, and pictures of The Fat Queen (mouse) and Dart (rat) that came up in my FB memories
(note that I do not encourage obesity in rodents, the Queen was just Like That despite being on the same diet all my mice always are. There are a few colors/patterns that are directly linked to being genetically overweight for mice, and I reckon she and her only slightly less fat sister had one of these and it was just masked by their albinism. But she lived a very long healthy life, the most of all the mice in her set!)
