The Last 12 Months

For privacy purposes some names have been changed or omitted.

A year ago I had just finished burying my mother of almost 30 years following her month long fight against Covid 19 and the ventilator she had been placed on. My wife and I were living together in our little apartment and our girls had just started going back to school. Cambam was in first grade, her second year of school, and Joyjoy had just started her first year in 5K.

2 months later my wife was stolen from me and my world fully collapsed. Had to move in with my wife’s parents, children had to change schools, and despite mountains of support from family members, friends, coworkers, and bosses I was left feeling alone. That loneliness has traveled with me for the past 10 months. The loneliness of living a life without my other half. The loneliness of raising my children without their mother. I’ve made friends, reconnected with older ones, and even had romantic interests over that time but I still feel as if I’m alone. Throughout it all my mother-in-law has become my saving grace, an absolute saint, but she’s tired. Tired of living in a world without her daughter, tired of constantly having to take care of most of her grandchildren. I can’t blame her, I’m tired too.

After the death of my wife I continued working in the kitchen I had been at. It was a good job, full of great people but it wasn’t for me. I was dead inside, and struggling to keep going. I was losing my motivation to stay and I eventually quit was I got my tax money back. However, the tax money wouldn’t last very long due to constantly having to take care of my own children plus the children of my siblings and I had to find a new job after just a couple of months. That led me to the warehouse I work at now.

Before finding the warehouse job I had used some of that tax money to completely change me wardrobe. My favorite color has always been pink and all of my new clothes were now pink. Everything that wasn’t pink, black, or white (with the exception of underwear) was donated away. The kitchen had a dress code that didn’t allow me to wear my pink clothes all of the time. This new warehouse job had no such dress code and for the first time in my life I unapologetically and without fear started wearing what I wanted every single day.

The results were amazing. My new coworkers were so supportive. I was constantly being complimented on my clothes. Not only was I doing what I wanted but I was being rewarded with mountains of positivity because of it. This led me to keep experimenting with other things I had always wanted to do. Having colored fingernails, wearing makeup, being more expressive with my jewelry. Every new change was applauded, complimented, and supported by my new coworkers and friends. The happiness I had lost for so long started creeping it’s way back into my life.

All of this had whittled away so many of the fears I had harbored my whole life. With each successful experimentation with my looks and wardrobe I grew more confident. So finally I decided to tackle my biggest fear. For so long, way before I had ever met my late wife I had seen a different me in my dreams than I had seen in my mirror. I was always afraid to tell anyone. Afraid to admit it, afraid to acknowledge it, afraid to let the secret out. Afraid to tell anyone that I didn’t feel like a man. That I didn’t want to be a man. That I wasn’t a man.

I started small. Only telling a very select few people. As those people supported me I gained more confidence to tell even more people. Eventually I ripped the bandage off completely, coming out to the world, telling everyone except for my children. The outpouring of love and support was overwhelming. This thing, this dark secret, that I had carried and hidden for so long was exposed to the light and the reaction I got was the exact opposite of what I had always feared. I was still loved, still accepted, still respected. I wasn’t seen or treated as some kind of monster or abomination. I was treated like a human being. A female human being.

I still feel that since of loneliness without my wife. I still feel a great deal of sadness when I think about my mom. I still have hard days and long nights where I worry about the future for me and my children. However, I’m no longer ashamed of who I am. Whatever life has in store for me I’ll face it as myself.
