Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
Every Friday afternoon, the Kingsland Wildflower Green Roof opens its doors to the local community. Tall grass and brightly-colored flowers greet visitors after their four-floor trek to the top of the building—a green oasis in Brooklyn, surrounded on all sides by heavy industrial activity.
Just across the street, the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant’s gargantuan “digester eggs” treat millions of gallons of sewage every day.
Despite the visual incongruity of this scene, both the garden and the treatment plant work to stop contaminated water from flowing into the city’s waterways during heavy rainfall.
The rooftop garden sits on a building on Kingsland Avenue owned by the production company Broadway Stages. Two well-tended sections contain a variety of plants and flowers native to the area, like strawberries and camassias. A garden on a lower roof is made up largely of sedum, a small succulent-type plant.
The garden is under the purview of the Newtown Creek Alliance, a local organization that works to improve the environment around the creek, which is a tributary of the East River and forms the border between Brooklyn and Queens.
Seven years ago, the green roof was born of a partnership between the Newtown Creek Alliance, the NYC Bird Alliance, formerly NYC Audubon, Broadway Stages and Alive Structures, a landscaping firm that specializes in roof gardens. The installation was funded by the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund, a $19.5 million payment to the New York State Department of Conservation (NYSDEC) in a settlement with ExxonMobil over their contamination of Newtown Creek.
In 1979, an investigation by the Department of Conservation found that ExxonMobil, which had historically operated oil refineries and fuel storage spaces along the creek, had spilled an estimated 17 million gallons of oil into the water—one of the largest terrestrial oil spills in the country’s history. Although ExxonMobil has been working for decades to remediate the problem through groundwater treatment, the creek remains an extremely contaminated Superfund site and is still on the National Priorities List of the nation’s most hazardous toxic waste areas.
A former wetland, much of the creek’s natural borders have been reconstructed for industrial operations, like oil refineries and petrochemical plants.
Much of the area surrounding Newtown Creek is located on a 100-year floodplain, which means that every year there is a 1 percent chance of an extreme flood event. Due to the weaknesses in New York’s sewage infrastructure, extreme rainfall constitutes a threat not just to the residents living near Newtown Creek, but also to the biodiversity within the creek and the flora that surrounds it.

How Daffodils and Spring Ephemerals Benefit the Ecosystem (And the Garden!)
Daffodils and other spring ephemerals are a sunny sight in early spring, but these plants benefit the ecosystem beyond their beauty and can benefit a permaculture garden too!
What are Spring Ephemerals?
Spring ephemerals are herbaceous plants that live in deciduous forests. Ephemeral means "lasting for a very short time" and these plants grow leaves, gather energy, put out flowers, and reproduce all before the trees leaf out in the spring.
This early season is the perfect time to pop up because they get access to the full sun while other plants are still dormant. This short period of activity fuels the spring ephemerals' energy needs for the rest of the year.
Daffodils and other spring ephemerals are largely animal resistant. They reproduce through seed as well as sending out new shoots from their root bulbs, which is why we often see daffodils growing in large clumps or patches. When the weather gets warmer and the trees begin to leaf out, spring ephemerals are signaled to go dormant until next spring and naturally die back for the season.
Ecological Benefits of Spring Ephemerals
Thanks to the nutrient rich rains in early spring, spring ephemerals are packed with nutrients. Their root systems catch and hold these nutrients and moisture and prevent them from washing away. Their roots also prevent soil erosion. When the plants die back, the excess nutrients they've been holding onto will enrich the plants and soil around them.
Gardening Benefits of Spring Ephemerals
Daffodils and other spring ephemerals provide nectar for early season pollinators. If you have other garden plants flowering during this time they'll improve the pollination of those too!
If you plant spring ephemerals on the high edges of your garden, all the nutrients and moisture they've been holding onto will enrich your garden soil and plants when they die back.
5 Spring Ephemerals (That do Well in The Garden Too!)
1. Ramps, Allium tricoccum: Ramps are useful spring ephemerals because they're edible and delicious! Cousins of garlic, onions, and chives, they're easy to grow in shady areas as long as they can access the early spring sun. Both the leaves and the roots are edible, but it's important to leave most of the root bulbs behind and only harvest one leaf off of each plant (they only grow two) so your ramps survive for next year!
2. Daffodils, Narcissus spp.: Daffodils are a common flower for landscaping and flower gardens. They are NOT edible, the bulbs are *TOXIC*, but still a useful plant for the garden! Daffodils leapt from the shady forest and evolved to live happily in sunny areas. They help with grass suppression and work well planted in a circle around a fruit or nut tree to keep grass from competing with it for soil or water. Daffodils also have huge bulbs which help repel digging animals like gophers and their above-ground leaves repel deer and other animals.
3. Camas, Camassia spp.: Another beautiful flowering spring ephemeral, camas are like daffodils and have evolved to live in sunny areas and they can also be used around trees to suppress grass. Camas bulbs are edible and were an important food for western Indigenous Americans. In order to eat the bulbs the entire plant must be harvested, so plan to replace the bulbs each year if you choose to harvest them.
4. Spring Beauty, Claytonia virginica: This dainty flower is an important source of nectar for early season pollinators. They are edible, but they're slow growing and rare in some areas so take extra caution in harvesting and be very sparing in what you take. The plant grows small roots that look like tiny potatoes or "fairy spuds", they can be eaten like regular potatoes if you don't mind their small size. The leaves and flowers are also edible raw or cooked. Spring beauties do well planted with strawberries because right as the spring beauties go dormant the strawberries leaf out.
5. Toothwort, Dentaria spp.: Toothwort likes rich, moist soils. In the wild it tends to grow in the deeper forest, but it makes a nice ground cover that dies back in the summer heat. The leaves and roots are edible raw or cooked. The leaves are nutritious and are tasty added to salads or soups. The fresh roots are crisp and peppery, they can be used to make a horseradish substitute.
Spring Ephemeral Harvesting Rules
1. Be positive that you've properly identified any species you intend to consume. Never munch on a hunch!
2. Never harvest more than 1/3 of a group of wild spring ephemerals. Taking less is always best when foraging in the wild. If you know a species is uncommon or over-harvested in your area, skip foraging it entirely for the sake of the ecosystem.
3. Don't collect seeds or whole plants from the forest. Source from native plant nurseries if you want to grow them.
Be safe and happy gathering and growing!

Bouquet Headcanons: Zenitsu to Inosuke
Best Bet iris and Blue Trophy hyacinth: both nods to the strength Inosuke has. With irises meaning protection and hyacinth meaning sorrow, these two together are a soft reminder of how far they've come from that first meeting.
Blue Melody Camassia, Lionheart Lily: The melody of Inosuke's prideful heart is as gorgeous to Zenitsu's ears as these flowers are to everyone's eyes.
Some pretty blue crocus flowers are there for color, a nod to the pretty blue strands of hair visible usually only during peaceful mealtimes. He'd never admit it, but Zenitsu loves the way that yellows compliment the blues of this bouquet. It's a promise to stay in Inosuke's life, because even if they clash, they clash beautifully.

Plant Bulbs in the Fall to Brighten Up your Spring Landscape
Written by Felder Rushing and published on https://www.hgtv.com/.
Who doesn’t love spring? For New Englanders, the icy cold dullness of winter is on the way out, the sun is getting brighter and warmer, and nature’s renewal is in the air. But wait just a minute…there’s just one problem. That early seasonal transition from winter to the vibrant spring growing season is just plain, gray-brown dull.
From the end of March to as late as early May, nature’s busy generating new growth, it’s just not very colorful, and that makes for dull gardens. It’s enough to drive many gardeners to the brink of despair, desperate for more colorful signs of life. Fortunately, there’s a secret weapon to combat all this dullness: bulbs.
Bulbs are perhaps one of the most valuable and productive friends an ornamental gardener can have. Cared for properly, they seem to automatically provide life and color in a bleak landscape after a hard winter. They are springtime incarnate, bringing joy with every vibrant flower!
When you add bulbs, you are using plants that are ephemeral. That means they’re plants that are transitory, with a short life cycle, and they’re going to show off during their favorable period and fade away when it’s not so favorable. Bulbs are an astonishingly large category of flowers, so it’s important to know what you have so you’ll know how to care for it. Two of the most popular bulbs are tulips and narcissi (daffodils are a type of narcissi), but there are many others, such as hyacinths, camassia, scilla, crocus, lily, and fritillaria, to name a few.
Planting Spring Bulbs in Fall
Whether you want masses of spring color or collect a few heirloom bulbs to share, all are easily planted in the fall.
What you plant are compact packages of hope…what you get are plants that bloom their hearts out for you – literally! Spring bulbs, including tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths, and so many more – even garlic – are best set out in the fall, just as the weather and soil starts to cool. Within weeks they will have sprouted roots reaching deep into the soil, followed by spears of greenery that withstands even the coldest weather, then late winter and spring stems topped with nodding flowers. But there are a few things you can do to make this easier and more productive, starting with choosing the right bulbs for your area. After all, many bulbs require cold temperatures to sprout and grow well, making some unsuitable for hot frost-free climates without some pre-chilling in the refrigerator crisper. Usually six or eight weeks is enough to satisfy their need for cold. Note: In moderate climates where winters get cold for at least a few weeks, only tulips need pre-chilling; in fact, daffodils that are refrigerated before planting often flower on short, stunted stems. And be careful to label bulbs left in fridges where some people may mistake them for food! Another precaution you may want to take is to protect your bulbs from voles, which are small rodents that eat bulbs. Horticulturists in many botanic gardens line their planting beds with half-inch “hardware cloth” which allows roots to grow but fences out the voles. You can substitute large plastic pots sunk into the ground if you wish (this works for hostas and other tender perennials, too). Also, bulbs need a little help with nutrients. While any all-purpose fertilizer will work, a light dusting of specially-formulated bulb food can yield research-backed benefits. Keep in mind that one-shot bulbs like tulips really don’t need as much fertilizer as longer-lived bulbs that will grow and return for years. Dig soil at least six or eight inches deep, loosening hard pans beneath, and mix a small amount of compost or other organic matter into hard clay or sandy soils. Add fertilizers at this time as well. If you aren’t going to plant the same day, cover the planting area with bark or other mulch to keep soil temperatures moderate in the winter and to protect against packing rain. My great-grandmother shared some of her heirloom bulbs which I simply fertilize every fall, and divide as needed to keep them from getting crowded. In the late summer I dig them, let them dry a few days, then separate and replant what I don’t share with friends and family. It is easy to create a wonderful potful of mixed bulbs by layering them – large bulbs deeper, smaller bulbs shallow. The general rule of thumb, plant twice as deep as the bulbs are in diameter, is not strict, but a good guideline. Main thing is to mix and match good bulbs for your area, pre-chill tulips and any bulbs being planted in frost-free areas, then plant in well-drained, lightly fertilize soil… and enjoy the results!

Camassia, Camas, Quamash. This is certainly one of the oddest plants in the garden. It grows from a bulb I planted about 15 years ago on the far right side where no one but me sees it. I have never seen the plant growing anywhere else. I haven’t done anything to the plant since I first planted the bulb. I think I will divide it this year after the leaves fade.
The name Camassia comes from the Nez Perce Tribal word which means sweet. The bulb was an important food source for Tribe which occupied lands in Washington, Oregon and Western British Columbia, and for Lewis and Clark when they made their way out west “discovering” land people had lived on for centuries.. When the white settlers dug up the large Camas fields in 1877, the Tribe waged the famous Nez Perce War.
The flower is like few others. Six long slender blue petals with acres of space between them. A missile like pistel with six long stamens topped by yellow rectangular pollen filled anthers. There’s no tube for a bee to slither through catching the pollen on its rear, so it is hard to figure how the plant spreads its pollen. It looks more insect than flower.

It’s Our Big Rock. So What If It’s Not the Biggest Rock in the World?
Big Rock Tai Chi Club, May 2020
I have spent nearly 20 years at the Big Rock corner of Louisville’s Cherokee Park. I meet here regularly with my Big Rock Tai Chi Club to practice Yang Family-Style Tai Chi. Big Rock is not our exclusive Shangri-La, as it is open to families, picnickers, plein air painters, guitar pickers, skulking teenagers, nature lovers and us.
The Big Rockers (my tai chi group) has grown smaller in the last few years, but our energy (chi) is undiminished. Nine or fewer of us meet now with Yong You, our friend and teacher.
Big Rock Tai Chi Club on the April 2010 celebration of World Tai Chi Day. Group arranged by Dan Wibbels; photo by Terry Meiners.
Here at Big Rock, I have made close friends, improved my health and found a deep sense of belonging.
youtube
Lloyd Kelly, a member of our group, demonstrates the 16-posture Tai Chi form, next to a twisting white mulberry, along the banks of Beargrass Creek.
People who truly inhabit a place are culturally adapted to that particular region or ecosystem. They know the plants, animals, weather, waters, soils—and draw their identity, lifeways and material culture—individual and collective—from that place.
–Gary Snyder
Big Rock, along the middle fork of Beargrass Creek, at the eastern fringe of the Olmsted-designed Cherokee Park, connects Louisvilleans to nature and to one another.
Our group sways in a choreography of slow, elegant moves with magical names like Brush Knee Push, Part the Wild Horse’s Mane and Repulse the Monkey. Bicyclists, joggers, parks employees, moms, dads and little kids stare at us curiously. Big Rock is full of eye-openers.
The geologic underpinnings of Big Rock began in the Silurian period. Thick slabs of Louisville limestone and Waldron shale were laid down 400 million years ago. John James Audubon admired Beargrass Creek; Shawnees depended on it.
Frederick Law Olmsted was hired to design and build a series of parks and parkways in Louisville, including Cherokee Park and Big Rock in the late 19th century. ”I never saw a park in my life which has as many natural advantages as the property just purchased,” Olmsted wrote in 1891.
Forsythia suspensa, late March
Walk the well-traveled trail, adjacent to the pavilion, and you’ll find the Big Rock that was dislodged from the steep cliff long before anyone was taking notes. It is nowhere close in size to massive boulders, two-stories high, on Yunnan’s Jinsha River near Tiger Leaping Gorge, but this is our little Beargrass Big Rock.
Beargrass, wild hyacinth (Camassia scilloides) in May
Botanist Julian Campbell unraveled the origins of the name beargrass in a fascinating story called Beargrass in the Bluegrass: Rediscovery of Ecological Meaning for Wild Hyacinth (Camassia scilloides):
“Until now, the origin of the name of Beargrass Creek in has been mysterious. The first written record was as ‘Rotten Cr. Or Bear Grass C.’ on Lewis Evans map of 1755. There is no evidence that ‘beargrass’ was a corruption of the French ‘La Barre Grosse Crique’ for ‘The Big Bar Creek,’ which has been suggested since the creek’s mouth is just above the Falls of the Ohio River. Instead, Otto Rothert theorized in1927 that the name was based on the plant Yucca filamentosa, often known as beargrass, which he stated was plentiful in the Virginia colonies. However, there is no botanical evidence that Yucca is native to Kentucky…During the 18th century, ‘beargrass’ throughout the central Ohio Valley was probably Camassia scilloides, eaten by bears and humans alike. “
Yucca filamentosa and the southern Appalachian Xerophyllum asphodeloides (beartongue) were less edible or even toxic, according to Campbell.
Water willow (Justicia americana) in June
The botanist Pat Haragan, who is a collaborator with Julian Campbell, met me near Big Rock a few weeks ago. Pat is the author of The Olmsted Parks of Louisville: A Botanical Field Guide and Weeds of Kentucky and Adjacent States. She has a sharp eye and notices plants I easily overlook. I can spot cigar trees, elderberries, common milkweed and even an occasional devil’s-dipstick mushroom, but she sees so much more on a short walk that I have either ignored or not seen.
Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) in June
Devil’s dipstick, elegant stinkhorn (Mutinus elegans in September
Pat tells me about the herbaceous water willows (Justicia americana) and points to bottle brush grass (Elymus hystrix), and the diminutive and indestructible path rush (Juncus tenuis). She knows where there is a Cherokee Park hillside, nearby, carpeted with spring-flowering beargrass (Camassia scilloides).
Note to Allen: Keep your eyes peeled next spring.
There have been mornings when my conscience nags at me to tend the garden instead of practicing tai chi at Big Rock. The garden needs perpetual care, but I have habitually slowed down, in order to be with friends and enjoy the natural beauty at Big Rock for a little while. I quiet my mind, move slowly and try to avert sideways glances to see what other park visitors are doing.
The Big Rock
Tai chi works wonders. On the drive home, with my body and soul soothed, and cocktail hour in the offing, I am startled when I look into the rear-view mirror and find four cars stacked up behind me. I am going 15 mph. I hit the gas and zoom on.

Located in the beautiful San Juan Islands, Yellow Island is a one kind nature preserve. This small island is home to over 50 wildflowers, many plants and trees, and visiting wildlife. Owned by The Nature Conservancy since 1971, Yellow Island is a truly wonderful place to learn about some of the native wildlife in the Pacific Northwest.
This island is about 11 acres in size and located in the San Juan Islands of the Puget Sound, just off the coast of northwest Washington. As a nature preserve, you’re able to experience the island in a very different way compared to the rest of the nearby islands. There has been a notable lack of grazing on this island over the years, which means that the unusual diversity of plants has been able to flourish.
The Nature Conservancy has also been able to do ecological research on the island to better understand grasslands in the northwest and the effect of invasive flora and fauna species. One of the ways the organization is able to do this is with a land steward, who lives on the island year round in a drift wood cabin to maintain the preserve, interact with visitors, and more.
Visiting
Yellow Island is open to the public, so it is possible to visit! There are some things to know before you go though. The public can visit year round from 10am to 4pm and the conservancy asks that you land and come ashore on the southeast beach, below the wooden cabin. The island is only reached by private boat and can be reached from Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Fisherman’s Bay on Lopez Island, or Deer Harbor on Orcas. Many have actually kayaked to the island from Deer Harbor!
There are small but established trails to stay on, which allows for the local plants and wildflowers to flourish. Groups of more than six need written permission to visit and there’s no camping or overnight mooring allowed. No food or dogs allowed on the preserve, again to allow the local wildlife to flourish.
Wildlife on Yellow Island
As mentioned, there are around 50 types of wildflowers, trees, and many other plants that exist on this island. The springtime is an amazing time to visit, as many of the flowers will be in bloom! Western Washington’s only native cactus species (the brittle prickly pear cactus) can even be found on the island. The island is worth visiting just for the plants and learning about the native grasslands of the northwest. Some of the wildflowers and plants include:
Camas (camassia quamash), a purple flower that were once traded among local indigenous peoples that still holds cultural and ecological signficance. After harvesting and 24+ hours of heat, the bulbs of these flowers can actually be used as sweeteners and in addition to being traded, they were often given as gifts during events like weddings and funerals.
Meadow Death Camas (Toxicoscordion venenosum), a white bulb like flower with many little flowers clustered at the top. This flower got its name because it is deadly to ingest!
Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja), a bright red or orange flower. The bright colors of these flowers are actually the bracts (a specialized kind of leaf) of the plant and the actual flowers are tubular and green!
Brittle prickly pear cactus (Opuntia fragilis), a cactus with little pads that stays close to the ground. I almost missed seeing a little patch of the cactus while on the island! This species is western Washington’s only native cacti.
The Nature Conservancy has a slideshow of the island, including some great photos of the wildflowers. But a great blog to check out for the island’s wildlflowers is from Monika Wieland, who went to visit the island in 2012 and photographed many different flowers! You can check that out by clicking here.
But there are other forms of wildlife on and around the island as well! Harbor seals can often be seen on or near the island and there was even a seal birth on the island in the summer of 2016! Additionally, the occasional orca pod can be seen passing by and river/mink otters can sometimes be found on the island. Bald eagles have been known to sit on the tall trees and bumblebees happily flock to all the wildflowers! There are so many other animals that call this island (and the surrounding area) home, including many invasive species like Canada Geese.

Salwar Suit
The Salwar-Suit can be effectively named as the unofficial public dress for ladies everywhere the Indian subcontinent. The salwar kameez is mainstream all finished India and there exists unpretentious varieties in arrangement relying upon the district one is based. For situation, if one somehow happened to see in metros, the salwar in the salwar-kameez has a tendency to be supplanted by tights and pants. Gold printed specks or Gold fringes are preserved in South India, while the Northern portion of the government supports plainly printed kameez with sequin work and weaving.
The measure of sequin work and weaving relies upon which event the salwar suits must be worn. Salwar suits saved for companies and relational unions have a tendency to be flashier and eye getting because of the splendid shading plans and measure of sequin and weaving work done on them. Salwaar suits held for ordinary and office utilize has a tendency to be more outspoken for evident reasons. The salwar suit is customarily worn with a "dupatta". The dupatta can be employed to wrap oneself and furthermore to cover one's head amid religious capacities, and in a few family units within the sight of senior citizens. For others, the dupatta is primarily a trendy grill that can be worn more than one shoulder or draped around the chest and over the two shoulders.
It is a charming shock to find that the modest salwar kameez has its origins in eminence. The salwar suit was the prevalent dress of decision in the North Western parts of India. The credit for advancing the salwar suit goes to the Mughals. After the Mughals conquered India, they brought a substantial measure of their conventions and culture to India. The outfit is accepted, to begin with, the Turkic-Iranian stallion riding steppe tribes of Central Asia from whom the Mughals have plunged. Some of these tribes converted over to Islam. Since it was the dress of the courts, the article of clothing regularly got in the favor of individuals as the Mughal Empire extended its grip everywhere throughout the subcontinent.
The pants, or salwar, are known as salwar in Punjabi: salwar or shalwar in Gujarati, and shalwar in Urdu. The word originates from the Persian, which means pants. The shirts, kameez or quiz, takes its name from the Arabic 'games'. There are two principal theories with honor to the starting point of the word, specifically:-
1. The Arabic names are gotten from the Latin word for shirt-camassia, which in its turn originates from the Proto-Indo-European kem importance shroud.
What makes a "salwar-kameez" or "salwar-suit"? The salwar kameez increased across the board notoriety with ladies in India as a contrasting option to the unwieldy saree. What's more, the "salwar suit", which was viewed as a reasonable outfit that met their unobtrusiveness pre essentials, and moreover permitted versatility of development, rose as a well-known decision.
A salwar kameez or a Salwar-suit comprises of three bits of textures. They are the Salwar, Kameez and a dupatta. The Salwar is equal to a sleeved tunic or a shirt. The length of the Salwaar can reach everywhere from the upper thighs or the distance down to the lower legs. It can either have a free fit or a body gripping one. Generally, the kurta doesn't have pockets yet the current variations nowadays do. You can likewise ask for the tailor to fasten a pocket into your salwar suit.
The width of the pant sleeves on the salwar ranges from as wide as 30 cm for the "pantaloon" look to as limited as 10 cm for "group of concubines" pants. They can be longer than the legs, which when worn, compress around the lower legs giving the look as though the individual is wearing bangles and henceforth the name "churidar".
Churidars are additionally cut longer than the leg and complete with a firmly fitting fixed sleeve at the lower leg.

Here at Big Rock, I have made close friends, improved my health and found a deep sense of belonging.
