My Digital Illustration final! Prompt was to make an illustration, with a 3D element, with folklore in mind. Folklore being as wide as cultural folklore (i.e. ethnic stories) or subcultural folklore (i.e. superstition or varying beliefs regarding music, sports, etc.). Some of the other students also went with stories from their culture, religious or native belief in origin, or stories or figures from other cultures like succubi or alien abductions. I did mine based on the Philippine folktale of the origin of the pineapple. I’m not gonna tell the whole story but I’ll shorten it to: A child turns into a pineapple. Anyway, chose the color palette and designed the background myself, and got the pineapple 3d model off of Turbo Squid

I am a feminist, but...

Have you ever heard of a bad feminist? Maybe not directly, but I assure you that you’ve come across one or two. Being a feminist is tricky- trust me, I am one. It’s tricky because of all of the contradictions we face from day to day. I recently watched the TED Talk “Confessions of a Bad Feminist” by Roxane Gay and it was one of my favorite feminist speeches ever because for the first time, I understood that… listen carefully… IT’S OKAY TO NOT BE PERFECT.

To continue and get to the real focus of this post, we were asked in my Communication and Gender class to write about how we identify (or don’t) with feminism. This is what I wrote:

 I am a proud, contradictory feminist because I believe all women are as powerful and strong as men. I love raunchy music, wearing pretty dresses, and being my boyfriend’s arm candy, but call me a “chick” and see what happens. If you honk or whistle at me, I’ll tell you to fuck off and wave my middle finger, but still “feed me and tell me I’m pretty”. I love women, and I believe women have the RIGHT to make their OWN choices for themselves, not anyone else.

Cal state Northridge people - I need your help!

I'm looking to spend a semester there as part of the national exchange program from Rutgers.  Who can tell me about school there?  How far are you from the beach - is there an active music scene - how challenging is the commute to LA, what's student life/nightlife like there, and anything else I should know?  Help!
