Any ideas for non twins & Simon crossovers?
Tried to cover lots of different vibes but feeling like I missed some possibilities 😅 (also tried to avoid ones that have been on past crossover asks to keep the vibes fresh)

Sydney Swans Qualifying Final Win Report Card
Big congratulations to the Swans for their victory over the Giants at the SCG. It did not look like happening for much of the afternoon, as GWS were on top for three quarters. The Sydney Swans Qualifying Final win report card must pay the ultimate honours to Isaac Heeney for his enormous four quarter effort. The blonde bombshell is all class and finished with 30 touches, 3 goals, and mark of the year. Heeney was on from the first siren and never stopped lifting his team over the victory line. At times he was a lone hand, however, and there were too many passengers this afternoon.

The Report Card For The Swans In Their Q Final Victory
Isaac Heeney AAA+ - Absolutely brilliant! Jake Lloyd AA - Produced a great game full of leadership at the clutch moments. James Rowbottom AA - The feisty heart and toughness of the Swans midfield who tackled hard all afternoon. James Jordan A+ - Stuck to his task all afternoon and was one of better players over 4 quarters. Dane Rampe A - Showed leadership and occasional dare from the back line. Will Haywood A - Classy forward who finished well when he got his opportunities. Tom Papley A - Got better as the game went on and won some vital contests when it really mattered. Braeden Campbell A – Was terrific when he came on as the sub in the last quarter and made a massive difference. He should have played the whole match. Harry Cunningham A – Was the best defender all game and showed composure when it mattered. Brody Grundy B – Tried hard all afternoon and made a contest. Got better as the match wore on. Chad Warner B+ – Had a great last quarter and helped the team get it done. Errol Gulden B – Was well held for much of the game but never stopped running and contributed a lot in the final term. Logan McDonald C+ - Never stopped running, trying, and although could not provide any aerial power did kick a great goal. Joel Amartey C – Poor performance but kicked an important goal at the death. Hayden Mclean C – Failed to mark anything and was poor as a forward. Lewis Melican C+ - Lacked composure down back but did a few good things too. Tom McCartin C – Tom was pretty average and did not always provide solid defence. Nick Blakey C+ - The Lizard lacked his usual mercurial dash and panache but never stopped trying. Ollie Florent C – Not his usual high standard and we missed his run for most of the match. Matt Roberts C+ - One of his poorer games and maybe did not handle the final’s pressure as he would have liked. Luke Parker C – Luke was not at his best. Justin McInerney C – Jazzy needed the run and was never quite with it. Callum Mills C – One of his poorer efforts and the final’s atmosphere was beyond him. This season has been a fail for him due to the time out with serious injury from a recreational activity. Coach Longmire shared post-match that Mills had a gastro complaint going into this clash.
Sydney Beat The Giants But Tall Forwards Go Missing The Sydney Swans tall forwards and big men, more generally, were crap in the air. The GWS controlled the aerial game to the detriment of the Swans. Hayden McLean needs to give more and show more desperation to win contests. Amartey and McDonald are young, but also, must lift, if the Bloods are going to win the Premiership. It is a tough ask when you cannot take contested marks around the ground and especially in the forward line. Marking and contesting aerially is about positioning and somebody needs to teach these guys how to position themselves properly. Swans Defence Were Pretty Ordinary Against The Giants Harry Cunningham was great and gave a four quarter effort. Dane Rampe had good moments and was composed when it mattered. McCartin and Melican tried all night but were rattled at times and off their best. Nick Blakey has had better games but gave effort all match. The Swan's defence have not been top notch all season and will need to do a lot better to win the Premiership. The defence coach at the Swans has been pretty ordinary as adjudged by the results.
Qualifying Final Win By Swans Thanks To A Special Few The Sydney Swans Qualifying Final win report card indicates that they won this game on the back of towering efforts by a few of their senior best players. Heeney, in the main, Warner in the last quarter, Lloyd, Cunningham, Rowbottom, and Campbell in the final segment of the match. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-09-08/braeden-campbell-stars-for-sydney-swans-after-death-grandfather/104324814 The Bloods must have more winning contributions from more players in the coming Preliminary Final. Paul Roos used to say the defining difference for Premiership winning teams is the performance of their bottom 6 players in the 23. The Swans need a big lift from at least 18 of their 23. Now, is the time for all these players to give more. Don’t waste 2024! Getting The Offence Vs Defence Balance Right Modern AFL football is about getting that balance between offence and defence right. This sounds simplistic but it impacts how you win the ball and how you defend when you don’t have the ball. Effort and belief drives your performance in winning contests but how you are set up around the ball determines second efforts and whether you win the ball back. GWS were better at systematically linking up around the ball to distribute effectively down the ground. Too many times Swan’s players did not support their team mates via second efforts to win contests. Why I don’t know, perhaps John Longmire does? Good teams hunt the ball in packs. Think of Collingwood last year at their best. GWS did this far better than the Swans in this Final. The Swans must rediscover this team attack if they are going to go all the way in 2024.
Around the ball ups in the midfield if the Swans did not win the initial contest they had no plan B. This is driven by the amount of offensive vs defensive structure in these set ups. Sydney need to have more than James Rowbottom creating pressure on opponents around these centre bounces. Tom Green and co were able to break away too easily in the first 3 quarters of the game. GWS were real good around the ball. Chad Warner is an offensive weapon but he was well held for most of the match. I expected more from Luke Parker to nullify the GWS midfield and to get hard ball gets out to the outside runners – this did not happen. Conclusions To Be Drawn Longmire shared post-game that Amartey rolled his ankle and nearly did not play. Mills had a gastro bug and was not at his best because of this. Braeden ‘BJ’ Campbell lost his grandfather during the week and was carrying a bit of an injury, which was why he was not selected in the 22 and was the sub instead. https://twitter.com/sydneyswans/status/1832554440043213114?ref_src=twsrcgoogletwcampserptwgrtweet Taylor Adams may have a door opening for him on the basis of the poor efforts by many Bloods in this stirring come from behind victory. Robbie Fox might be in a similar position on this basis. The big holes in this last gasp winning performance were: Not enough winning contests over 4 quarters by too many in the side. A lack of aerial power to mark and spoil all over the ground. More pressure on the ball by all members of the 23 for 4 quarters. Poor positioning by the tall forwards in marking contests. How about making a plan like intentionally kicking short to contest so that forwards know to get out in front? Be predictable to assist their efforts wherever possible. Getting the offensive vs defensive balance right at centre bounces. Give more, like there is no tomorrow, because in 2 weeks’ time this will be the case. Don’t die wondering! https://wordsforweb.com.au/i-asked-ai-about-the-sydney-swans-their-season/ Robert Sudha Hamilton is the author of America Matters: Pre-apocalyptic Posts & Essays in the Shadow of Trump. ©WordsForWeb Read the full article

Rory Confronts His Boss

What do you do when your chest wakes you in pain at 2am and then you finally calm yourself down and convince yourself that you're actually going to be ok and yes, you can breathe? You write this at 3am of course.
TW fit mentions of torture, some threatening posturing. Rory stress swearing. I think that's it? Also Rory is actually a bit of a badass and I love him,
The locality training facility was dark and shut up for the night when Rory got there. The car park was empty save for his car and one other, much more expensive, much newer car. He pulled up into a space far away from it. For whatever reason, he didn't feel much like being close to it.
For the second time that day he thought back to the question that Callum had asked him when he had donated himself. Had Rory ever been to the facility. And the answer had been no because it was invite only. Both the interview to become an AP and the job training took place at the locality collection box itself. He certainly had his invite now. And he couldn't have wanted it less if his life depended on it.
Rory heaved a huge sigh out as he turned the ignition off, pulled up the handbrake, and stepped out of the car. He didn't know his way around here but the front entrance seemed like the most sensible choice. As he approached it, a light flickered on inside and the door swung open. His boss, Mr Newman, stood in the doorway. Arms folded. Frowning. Scowling. Foot tapping.
"Rory," Mr Newman said curtly as Rory drew level with him. "On your own I see."
"I told you I would be," Rory said. "I told you I wasn't going to bring him here and I meant it."
"Mmm. You always were a stickler," Mr Newman said, turning and walking back into the building. "Follow me. The door'll lock behind you."
With no other options, Rory stepped into the reception area and let the door swing shut behind him. It clicked as he did and he glanced back, relieved to see that there was a push button to exit as opposed to any sort of swipe or key card exit. He followed along behind wishing all the while that he could be at home with Callum instead. The thought of him being there on his own made Rory restless. He'd only just got him back. He'd made the worst mistake of his life when he'd followed the rules and let Callum donate himself. Callum had had the most terrible three years imaginable until Rory had got him back. The universe had somehow given Rory what he considered to be an underserved second chance. And he was at the locality facility instead of where he should be. At home. Holding Callum. Cleaning Callum. Feeding Callum. Comforting Callum.
He walked the barely lit corridors a few steps behind his boss until they finally stopped at a door. Mr Newman took a key card from his pocket and swiped it down a pad to the side of the door, lighting up a tiny green light and releasing the lock on the door with a quiet click. Inside the room was Mr Newman's lavishly appointed office. A name plaque on the desk. On the very large desk. Bookshelves and certificates and family photos. Two comfortable chairs near a huge window that showed nothing but darkness outside, and a small table between them with a vase of flowers. Mr Newman motioned to one of the comfortable chairs.
"Take a seat," he said, going to his desk to gather up a small stack of papers. Rory did as he was bid although he would have preferred to stay standing. To stay near the door. Every inch further away from Callum was an inch too far. Like a physical ache that his body was tired of feeling.
"So," Mr Newman said, sitting opposite him and looking at the papers. "Callum Morris."
"Morrow," Rory said.
"I'm sorry?"
"His name's Callum Morrow. Is that even the paper work that I submitted when he donated?"
"It's the paper work we have."
"Then I'm just going to go ahead and assume that it is, in fact, not the paper work that I submitted. You know something? It might have taken me more than a few days to actually find Callum again? But it's taken me all of one conversation with you to lose all faith in this system."
"This system employs you and pays your wages so if I were you I'd be keeping a civil tongue in my head," Mr Newman put the papers on the table with calm ease although Rory strongly suspected that it was because he now knew that it was a useless pile of paper. Rory sighed and bent his head forward to run his fingers through his hair. He was tired. He wanted to go home to Callum.
"I should've checked more thoroughly," Rory said, sitting back up straight. "Checked that he really wanted to go through with it."
"That wasn't your job Rory. You know that."
"Well maybe it should've been," Rory said, his voice a little louder. His fingers back in his hair and twisting a bit. Mr Newman stood and walked to one of the bookcases to take down a decanter and glass, pouring himself a drink of some sort of honey coloured liquor.
"Look," Mr Newman said, taking a sip of his drink. "It's the Titanic effect." Rory frowned at him from his seat. "You don't know there's a problem until something goes wrong. That's when you can make improvements."
"Improvements!?" Rory shouted, standing and shoving the chair back as he did, teetering it on two legs before it righted itself. "You think this needs "improvements"!?"
"I can see you're angry..."
"You're damn right I'm angry," Rory shouted, stepping around the stupid little table with its stupid vase of flowers. "Do you know how long Callum was out there? Do you? Three fucking years, that's how long..."
"... and he will be brought to the facility and reconditioned..."
"Like hell he will," Rory said, trying to control his temper and his voice. "He's staying with me."
"You can't do that Rory,"
"Can't I?" Rory shouted, entirely failing in his attempt to maintain his calm. "You show me in your fucking contract where it says what happens when a collector tortures the ever living fuck out of you for three years and then dies. You show me where huh!?" Rory breathed deeply in and out, his chest heaving from his sudden outburst of anger. He spoke more calmly. More quietly. "Just some compassion. Please. It's not as if he's in any state to be speaking out against your programme."
"It's not my programme Rory," Mr Newman said, as calmly as ever. He sipped his drink again and Rory imagined shoving the glass into his face with the heel of his hand.
"That's just splitting hairs," Root said. "You know exactly what I mean. He's hardly in a state to speak at all. And whenever he does it's to beg to go back to be tortured some more because he thinks he deserves it or some shit. So please. Leave him be. Please."
"If his selector is dead," Mr Newman said, draining his glass then refilling it. "Why does he keep asking to go back?"
"He...uh... he doesn't know."
"Well now that is very interesting," Mr Newman drank some more.
"Don't you even think," Rory hissed. "Don't you even think about putting this on me. I did everything by your book. I checked everything."
"And yet we have this poor boy being tortured, as you tell it, for three years by the Selector that you provided him to. And now he's in your apartment locked away and you're refusing to bring him to the safety of his locality training facility."
"I know the Programme inside out," Rory said, stepping closer to Mr Newman. "I have read and re-read every piece of paper work. I have checked every form. It all checked out at the time."
"Yet suddenly it didn't anymore," Rory stepped closer still, making Mr Newman break off his sentence with a nervous laugh. "You don't want to threaten me Rory."
"Like you threatened me on the phone? But you're right. I don't want to. I want to go back to Callum which is exactly what I'm going to do." Rory stepped back and felt the briefest surge of pleasure at the look on his boss's face as he did so.
"Have it your own way," Mr Newman said as Rory pushed the door handle down and opened the door. "You just be careful." Choosing not to answer, Rory stepped out if the office and resisted the urge to slam the door behind himself. He traced his way back through the corridors and out to his car, all the while resisting the temptation to check if he was being followed.
He barely remembered the car ride back to the apartment, the only proof that it happened being that he'd made it and not crashed his car doing so in such a rage filled haze. He fumbled his keys until he finally managed to get into his apartment, cursing at the keys for being so difficult and throwing his jacket on the floor in a fit of temper.
"Callum?" Rory called out. He couldn't see him but he could swear that he smelt food. He walked through to the living area and peered around the corner to see that his dining table had been cleared and cleaned. And that there was a steaming dish of pasta with sauce on it. Accompanied by what looked to be a tumbler of vodka, a glass of water, and a piece of kitchen towel folded neatly as though it were a real napkin.
"Cal?"
"Uh...uhhh....ummm.... I'm sorry...umm... I'm sorry," He could hear him but he still couldn't see him.
"Cal where are you?"
"Umm... I'm sorry. I'm...umm..." Callum peeked out from under the table, cluthing on to his filthy teddy tightly. "I mm... made you f...food and I've waited. I p...pr... promise. I haven't had any."
Rory crouched down and slowly worked his way towards where Callum was still half hiding.
"I've been good," Callum whispered. "M...m...mmm...master Hayden can know I've been good." Rory let his head fall forward as he sighed.
"Yeah," he said. "I know. You've been the best sweetheart. Ok? The best. What do you want me to do? You can say. I want you to say."
"Umm..." Callum nudged closer to Rory, haltingly, stiltingly. An inch at a time and bending as he went until his cheek was pressed to the floor by Rory's knee. "Please eat... please... I'm sorry it's not better. I'll try harder next time."
Rory sighed and gently rubbed his fingers through Callum's hair. "No pain for this ok? And then I'll eat."
Beneath his fingers he felt Callum nod.

Character Transparent Folders
When a character reaches a certain number of files, I have been putting them into according to their outfit or variation in order to prevent the character folder from becoming messy and making it difficult to find what you're looking for. The ask I had regarding Avery prompted me to go through every book folder and have a look at characters where this may need to be the case. Now the following characters have now been sorted into outfit folders, along with the characters who are already sorted into outfit folders.
I have not included Rory Silva, Skye Crandall, and Logan from Ride or Die as I need to finish their folders. But once I have, they will also be sorted into outfit folders.
In the case of Adrian, Gaius, Jax, Kamilah, Lily, Rheya, Cas, Gabe Adalhard, & Bastien, they are organised into Vampire and Werewolf eyes folders instead of outfits. And in regard to Kyra & Dakota, they are organised by their hair.
If there are any characters I have missed that you think should be sorted like this, let me know.

Szóval teljes relevanciával, íme a kedvenc 2019-es lemezeim.

Alllrighty. So, @whump-it, hello! I’m back with a thing. @pepperonyscience I feel just a little bit bad for dangling the prospect of this over your head to make you go to bed, so here is your tag for Primary Access to the art. Also thanks for help with reference things :D I think I definitely need to preface this with the way this piece came about. It went a little like this...
Me: Okay, I’ve worked out designs for these characters, so now I think I’m gonna draw a full piece with them. There are so many cute fluffy ideas I have, I don’t know how I’ll deci-
My brain: Hey. About that. Do you remember that one piece you read a while ago that had something to do with chains and oww?
Me: .........yeah okay that’s half of the Callum stuff from what I recall. But that’s irrelevant because I’m-
My brain: Go to the masterlist. Right now. And Look For It. Read Every Piece Until You Find It; I Don’t Care How Long It Takes.
Me: hhhhhnnn okay I don’t think I have a choice, uhhh....... bye bye fluff ideas....
And that’s how I finally came back around to “Black and Blue Part 2″ featuring Whump-It’s fantastic characters Callum and Hayden. I honestly forgot how much I love the entirety of this series, and I’m so glad to be rediscovering it and accidentally obsessing over it with art. I’ve got so many ideas floating around right now it’s not even funny aghhh
But yes! I had such a time working out this pose, especially how that chain is wrapping around Callum’s neck and holding up the limp hands. This piece was really about overall presentation for me, and that really started at the beginning where, at the preliminary sketching stage, I had the idea to use Callum’s words and colors as the background. So that was one of the first things I did and it was the backdrop for the rest of the process, really setting the tone for me (as I also tried to ignore how bad my handwriting is and convince myself not to use text because that’s just a nightmare lol).
Oh you know what was really an adventure in this? His torso. I’ve never done a full painted piece of someone without a shirt on, as far as I can remember, and especially seeing how thin I assume he is, it was a challenge. How much rib poking through is too much? What are pecs? What are the arms like in comparison to this? I figured out that human ribs extend a lot further down than I would have previously considered and I will forever be hyper aware of that... but drawing them worked out once I got the hang of their general placement.
I’m just rambling about my thought process at this point but I don’t really care because I want to talk about his expression too. There was so much struggle in my mind about what to do with that. Do I make him look determined, desperate, tired? In the end it was a bit of all three, though it took a bit of experimentation to make sure he didn’t look high or just really disappointed in me. (By experimentation, a lot of the effectiveness there was just making him cry, lol)
And yeah. I think that’s most of what I have to say, except for minor continuity details I had fun with like the trail of blood from earlier when Hayden cut his tongue, and the matted blood in his hair from where the knife was wiped. Rereading writing while drawing a scene from it can just be. So satisfying. Unless you’re missing a small detail, in which case, it can be very frustrating as well, haha.
Okay. It’s late and I need to stop talking before I make this too long.
tl;dr, I love Callum but I love hurting him even more. Look he’s really sad and tired and hungry isn’t Whump-It an absolute genius for doing this to him in the first place? This piece is merely Pain Vibes and a Learning Experience; what’re you gonna do about it?
#whump#art#whump art#my art#fanart#blood tw#but only very minor just a tiny bit#tied up#chained#choking#very much implied though not visually depicted#crying#i love callum y'all#me: this will be a sketch. A lightly lined doodle#also me: here we go again boys it's full piece time#love focusing on Only That for two days straight#oh and hey if you're down here reading the tags whump-it#that rb you did with the sketches was#Really Nice#and it warmed my heart#especially seeing your opinions on my creative decisions#i was half into the base colors of this so i saw that and was like. ah. i am already on to other things happening with the arts#ahh okay it's too early for brain function#and I have to go work on a Real Life Obligation for a bit anyway#uhmmm definitely missing something important#that's alright#i'll remember when i wake up in the morning like an hour after this is already posted#ahahaha still feeling kinda triumphant about forcing pepperony to get sleep with this promise though#she said she was going to bed. and then she Didn't#had to play dirty at that point because she was assaulting us with christmas songs

Newcastle confirm big boost before Saints clash, fans will be buzzing - opinion
3 minute read 28/8/2021 | 11:15am Newcastle United have been handed a major injury boost over Allan Saint-Maximin ahead of their Premier League clash against Southampton on Saturday afternoon. Steve Bruce’s side have had a wretched start to the new season thus far, losing two from two in the top-flight, and then being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Burnley on penalties in mid-week. Saint-Maximin started that game against the Clarets on the bench, before being brought on in the second-half, and while he went on to miss a spot-kick in the shoot-out, there was surely more concern over the injury he seemed to pick up. However, as per The Chronicle Live, the Magpies have been handed a major injury boost over the Frenchman heading into today’s game. The report said: “Allan Saint-Maximin took a whack on the top of his foot during his cameo against Burnley but is expected to be OK for Southampton. Paul Dummett ‘in and around it’ and Isaac Hayden ‘touch and go’ after training yesterday. One or two who came in for cup game may get chance tomorrow.” Last season was an incredibly frustrating one for Saint-Maximin, with his campaign having been heavily disrupted by his long-running battle with the virus. But that still didn’t stop him from averaging an impressive 3.2 dribbles per game in the top flight, a statistic which ranked him second among all players in the division. One man who has seen Saint-Maximin’s talents up close is teammate Callum Wilson, with the Magpies striker waxing lyrical about his ability and how far he can go in the game. The 29-year-old said: “I think the world’s his oyster, really. He’s got all the potential in the world and his attitude matches that as well. He’s quite a quiet, humble guy – he wears some lively clothes at times, but he’s a good guy. He’s got all the talent in the world, he can beat a player – sometimes once you’ve beaten him, get some end product, like he has been doing. “He makes the game look so easy; for my goal against Burnley, the way he’s done a little bit of trickery himself and then just put a ball in the box – great end product, unstoppable, unplayable.” It’s exactly why news the flying Frenchman should be fine for today’s game against the Saints at St James’ Park is sure to have fans buzzing. Meanwhile, Newcastle United are eyeing this “lightning-quick” star… Read the full article

Swans Shellacking By Cats Is Déjà Vu
AFL side, the Sydney Swans, went down to Geelong undermanned and got thumped. Swans shellacking by Cats is déjà vu, after the 2022 grand final thrashing was repeated. The Geelong team were mighty and won the contest all over the ground. The Swans were missing their full back, centre half back, and other big man in defence. Sydney was also without their full forward and first choice ruckman. The Swans battled manfully and never gave up but were severely outclassed and outplayed. The result of the match exposed some serious flaws in the #Swans recruiting over the previous few years.
Sydney Thrashed in Grand Final Repeat
Sydney has neglected the recruitment and development of big men in their squad. Dean Cox has been an assistant coach for years and they are awful at centre bounces. Swan’s ruck stocks have been thin for a decade in truth. The club obviously does not value ruckmen because they have been second rate in this regard for a long time. In my view, you cannot win premierships without two bloody good ruckmen. Yes, Sydney currently have a lot of injuries but they haven’t developed depth in the talls for too long and now are woefully exposed in this regard.
Swans Shellacking By Cats Is Déjà Vu
Sydney Swans Injuries Expose Poor Recruiting & Development
The McCartin brothers have been great but this set up makes the team vulnerable because of the concussion situation. Where are the back ups in defence? Sam Reid has been a crock in terms of the numbers of games missed through injury over his career. That is harsh but true. Similarly, Lewis Melican has been injured for long stints and hasn’t come on. Will Gould is young and largely untried and unknown at this level. Dan Rampe is getting old. The Swans have great run off the half back line with Nick Blakey and Ollie Florent but lack size and strength. Braeden Campbell and Jake Lloyd are too small and can’t tackle to save their lives. Against the best attack, like last night, the Swans defence was paper thin. Yes, the Swans are a very young side and will get better as they mature. Yes, they are exciting to watch when running and passing well. Errol Gulden and Chad Warner are wonderful players. Luke Parker has been a bit flat of late but always tries hard. Dylan Stephens needs to learn how to tackle and defend. Callum Mills is a great player who was wasted in defence and is needed on the ball. Winning the ball out of the centre is what wins games and the Swans are second rate at this right now. Peter Ladhams is not a first string ruckman. Geelong crushed Sydney in terms of winning the ball and winning contests. Hayden McLean lacks the necessary experience to provide big man presence right now. Tom Hickey is injured and has been wonderful, but is not in the prime of his playing career.
The Swans have beaten Gold Coast, Hawthorn, and Richmond. Two cellar dwellers and a side that will battle to make the eight. Something is not right in the harbour city. Young men need a strong and capable big man to follow out on the ground. Sydney lack this physical presence when up against strong and seriously good sides. The Swans will never win a premiership until they fix this glaring omission in their ranks. John Longmire needs to make the hard decisions on his list if the club is to deliver on the talent already there. Longmire is asking too much of boys, without providing the strong big men in their ranks necessary for the task of competing at AFL level, and you can go to the well too often in this regard. ©WordsForWeb Read the full article

Callum, Rory and Alyaa; Miscommunication Part 1

TWs for characters that are clearly healing from past abusive situations. Panic attacks. Small mention of scarring.
“Alyaa!”
She stopped in her tracks at the sound of her name being called. She knew that voice. She recognised it from the last time she had heard it, laced with alcohol and too close for comfort. She had got her timings wrong. He should be at work. He shouldn’t have been able to find her in the corridor. She should have known better.
“Alyaa, I need to ask you something!”
His voice was closer this time, his footsteps were approaching at a jog. She closed her eyes and breathed in. In through her mouth and out through her nose. Her fists clenched in and she dug her nails into her palms on each hand, letting feeling of it centre her before she opened her eyes, painted a smile across her face, and turned to greet Rory who jogged to a stop in front of her, closer than she wanted.
“You ok?” he asked her, frowning slightly at her stiff posture, her controlled manner. He could only imagine what he must have said to her that time when he was drunk, but he didn’t want to ask. And right then wasn’t the time. There were other more important things that he needed to worry about.
“I’m fine,” Alyaa said, politely. Quietly. Carefully and with a hint of thanks that should smooth over any further probing.
“Good! Good,” Rory pushed his hands into his jeans pockets and bounced awkwardly up and down on the balls of his feet, making Alyaa wish both that she’d pretended she’d never heard him to start with and that he would just spit it out.
“So I really really need to go out today and I don’t want to have to lock Callum in the apartment but if I don’t he’ll probably wander,” he said in a hurry, blushing and glancing nervously up and down the corridor. Everything that he had said so far was making her itch with the desire to run, run and then keep running. “I can’t have him wandering you see and I need to go out...”
“You already said that part,” she said quietly.
“Umm, yeah. Uh, so the thing is I was wondering if you could just go in and keep an eye on him for me? Please? Because I just don’t trust him on his own quite yet.” As he spoke he started backing up a bit, moving slowly in the direction of his own front door, clearly hoping that she would follow. Like a scared puppy being led nervously to the shelter. Being led where it ought to be safe. Where no one actually ever knew what went on once the door closed. And damn it all if her feet didn’t start to move with him. She had given them no permission to do so but they were doing it anyway. And she knew, she just knew, that the reason was because someone needed to see if that boy he had brought home was ok. Because saving herself once had been the hardest thing in the world and she knew that not everyone was capable of that amount of strength even if it had left her almost permanently emotionally winded. And because she knew without ever having to be told it, that the boy had been Callum. The one that Rory had cried about to her. The one that he had clearly wanted for himself. The one that he now did have and had brought home battered and bruised, cut to shreds and barely clothed.
“He won’t give you any trouble,” Rory said as they drew closer and closer to his door. “But please don’t offer him anything. He’s able to make his own food and drinks and stuff. He doesn’t do so well with being given nice things so best not to ask.”
Alyaa swallowed hard and tried to slow her heartbeat, which was skipping up and down uncomfortably in her chest, while her mind turned over on itself with all of the possible reasons why on earth she shouldn’t offer this boy anything nice. Why nice things were apparently being kept from him.
She watched from a small distance while Rory fumbled his keys out of his pocket and opened his front door. He motioned for her to go in but her self preservation made her stay back, a small shake of the head to say that he shoudl go in first. Her self preservation made her keep him in front of her and the door right behind her as she followed him into his apartment. She stepped in after him and left the door open, keeping her back to it. The place was a mess. It was overly warm and stuffy and all of the windows that she could see were shut. Her gaze bounced from window to window, over and over, checking and zeroing in on the catches while her feet moved just a step closer to the door. The living area was a clutter of pillows and covers, old glasses with the drink still in the bottom of them. The dining table caught her eye as being utterly and spotlessly clean, and it stuck out like a sore thumb in the rest of the chaos. She craned her neck to look into the kitchen area which was also surprisingly clean and tidy.
“Callum!” Rory shouted, making Alyaa jump and sending her heart rate leaping again. A bead of sweat ran down from her neck. She could feel it tickling its way down her back. He turned back to look at her and shrugged with a small apologetic looking smile which she didn’t like in the least.
“Sorry,” he said. “He’s probably in his room...” They were interrupted by a small sniffing coming from between the coffee table and one of Rory’s couches. Rory moved instantly in the direction of the sound, and Alyaa was drawn instantly out of the need to see what had happened to Callum. She moved into the room, still keeping Rory in front of her and the door at her back, a clear line between her and her exit, and looked down into the space between the furniture where Rory was now crouched down, his hands pressed to down on Callums drawn up knees.
And there he sat. Callum. In an oversized sweater that she guessed must belong to Rory, and a pair of sweat pants. His feet were bare and she could have sworn that there was a hint of some sort of scarring just licking up from around the soles. He was clenching his toes then releasing them over and over while Rory muttered something at him close to his face. The poor boy was blushing furiously and nodding, looking sad and upset and nervous and Alyaa wanted to run and she wanted to kick Rory where he was crouched. And she wanted to pick Callum up and take him home. She backed up a touch and from her new position she could see that Callum was holding on to something tightly behind his back. Something crusted in what looked like mud. Or at least she hoped that it was mud. He was twisting it up in his grip as though his life depended on it while he continued to nod over and over at whatever it was that Rory was saying to him. Her mouth felt dry, throat thick and tight while she watched them interacting.
Rory rocked back on his heels and stood, followed by Callum who did the entire movement with his hands behind his back, clutching tightly to what she could see now was a teddy bear, and she was horrified all over again. He looked so young but she knew that he was a grown man. And he looked frightened and torn to pieces that were barely holding together. And he was holding a teddy. There was so much wrong about everything that her brain couldn’t settle on one singular point. Instead it held her frozen where she was while Rory introduced them.
“Callum, this is Alyaa,” Rory said, motioning to her.
“Hey,” she said softly, trying so hard to smile for him and for herself. “Callum?” He looked quickly from the ground up to meet her eyes and then looked to Rory, his gaze settling on him. Alyaa wante dot tell him to look at her, not Rory. Don’t look at him. He’s not in charge. He doesn’t have to be in charge. Her ears were ringing slightly and she could see Rory lips moving but couldn’t hear what he was actually saying. He nodded in her direction and Callum looked back to her.
“Umm...yeah...C...Callum.”
A moment of silence hung awkwardly in the air between them all for a few beats until Callum hesitantly spoke up.
“Uh...umm...c...can I sit back...umm...on the floor?” he said, looking at Rory wide eyed and flushed.
“Yeah, you go for it,” Rory said.
“Thank you,” Callum whispered. “Thank you for letting me...tha...thank you.” Alyaa listened horrified to his murmurs of gratitude. Had he been fine she realised, she would have run out of the apartment, back to her own, and locked herself in for days. But not now. Not now that she had actually met Callum. Her fear was reigned in tightly and kept in check only by the fact that he seemed to be so very damaged. She knew damage. She knew what it felt like. Someone needed to stay with him.
“Right,” Rory said. Or announced. It was spoken with a finality that allowed Alyaa to breath a little more easily because finally he would go and she could relax just a tiny little bit. Not much, but the tension might bend instead of breaking. “I’m sorry but I really do have to make a move. I won’t lock the door but Callum, you have to do what Alyaa says ok? Please? Just stay in the apartment. I don’t know how long I’ll be out for but you need to stay. Don’t try to go back. Ok? Promise me?”
“I promise,” Callum said earnestly, looking up from his place back on the floor. “I won’t go. I’m sorry. I won’t...I’m sorry.”
"Ok... cool," Rory moved towards Alyaa and she backed up slightly, led a dance between them, a circling motion that took her closer to Callum, and Rory closer to the door.
"... right. I'll see you both later," and with that Rory was out of the apartment and the door was clicked shut. Alyaa listened to hear the tell tale sound of a lock sliding into place, breath held and aware of everything. When ten or so seconds had passed with no more noise she released her breath and tried to relax into the situation. When she turned back to see what Callum was doing, she saw that he was right back where he had started. On the floor with his teddy behind his back. She crouched down in the spot that she was stood in, first to her knees, and then slowly placed both palms flush to the floor and slid her legs out to the side, settling into the position near to him but not too close. She slowly moved her hands to her lap and kept them close in so that he would know that she wasn’t intending to aim any fists or swings in his direction. She could see the bob of his adams apple as he swallowed reflexively, a sure sign of his skittishness and nerves. He was glancing across at her from time to time and clearly trying not to be seen doing so. He ducked his head back down when she smiled at him.
“Callum?” she said quietly. He looked up quickly and looked alert to any dangers that could come his way. It was a look that she knew all too well.
“Umm...y...yeah,” he said, eyes darting around the room and only ocassionally landing on her face.
“Thank you for letting me spend the day with you,”
“Uh...well...Rory said I shouldn’t be alone...so....” Callum’s words trailed off into more silence.
“Yeah I know,” Alyaa said, trying not to let her face show how cross that had made her. That apparently this poor young man wasn’t even allowed to be left on his own for one day for fear that something would happen. That he might get out. And that Rory was determined to stop that from happening. Part of her wished that he had just locked Callum in like he had apparently been doing since he had brought him home, so that she wouldn’t have to be in there with him, panic striken and nervous and constantly looking at the door and the windows to calculate the quickest way out. But the thought of abandoning him was already too much to bear.
“So...what do you do then?” she asked, trying to frame her questions in the best possible way to get answers but without breaking Rory’s rules. Because breaking rules had always been a fast track to trouble. One that she didn’t want to travel down again if she could help it.
“Wh...what do I do?” Callum asked, looking confused.
“Yeah. Like during the day. Here. What’s a day like for you?”
“Umm...I like...no...umm...Rory says not to do...umm...he says I should wash or...I sit with my teddy,” his eyes were starting to sparkle with tears, welling up and edging towards spilling over and down his cheeks.
"Ok," she said. "That's ok. You just stay sitting then." Alyaa glanced around, desperate for inspiration or an idea that would help. A way into Callum's mind. A way into what was actually going on.
"So do you go out much?" Alyaa asked. "Does Rory let you... take you out?" Callum curled forward at the question, had been curling gently more and more in on himself since she'd started asking him questions. The silence stretched out until he eventually answered.
"He takes me out," Callum whispered, knees tucked up and his mouth pressing the words on to them instead of out into the air. "Th... thank you for umm... for asking. He...we go walking sometimes. He's always s... so kind to me. He says he'll always bring me h... home."
Alyaa suppressed the shudder that ran down her back at his words. At the politeness that seemed all too automatic. She was struggling to make any sense of it.
"Well," she said, forcing the words out even while they were making her feel sick. "That sounds very nice. Uh, very nice of him to do that." She wanted to scream at Callum that he should be allowed to go for a walk if he wanted to go for a damn walk. That Rory didn't own him. But what stopped her was the ice cold, stomach churning dread that Rory had gotten hold of what he had wanted since the first moment it had walked into his Collection Box. That there was every chance that Rory did, in fact, own him.
"He says... he... I'm not supposed to want to go back," Callum volunteered the start of some information up and Alyaa pounced on it. Another part of a barely even started puzzle.
"Go back where Callum?" she asked quietly. "Where have you come from?"
Silence draped heavily around them again as Alyaa sat and watched Callum. He was still digging his fingers into the teddy, still swallowing hard. A tear had finally escaped and ran slowly down his cheek before dropping on to his knee.
"From Master Hayden," he said, breaking his voice on the words and gulping in a sobbing breath. He looked utterly distraught, wrecked, just a shadow of what Alyaa could tell that he ought to be. Who ever Callum's Master Hayden was, it was very clear to her that he was upset about being away from him. Defeated. Devastated.
"Oh Callum," she said, edging just a touch closer, scooting across the floor towards him. "Do you miss him? Are you missing Hayden?"
"I'm..." Callum was crying over his words, making them hard to understand. "I'm not...I can't be better if I'm not with Master...mm... Master Hayden. I can't be...I can't be better. I want to be better. I can atone..."
Alyaa watched him twisting himself up in knots and panic and confusion, the fear that was coming off him in waves was starting to lap at her toes and erode the edges of her composure. She could feel it happening with no power to hold it back. In one quick move that sent Callum scuttling back towards the couch she pushed up off the floor and almost ran to the kitchen, throwing herself towards the window, over the sink, grabbing at the handle that wouldn't budge, fingers scuffing across the sill blindly feeling for a key but finding nothing.
There was no key. The handle wouldn't move. The latch didn't give. There was no key. There was no key. There was no key. The edges of Alyaa's vision were starting to twinkle and fuzz. Her breathing was ragged. She felt hot and cold all at once. She was on the very knife edge of what her body was willing to put her through when just to the side of her, silently, slowly and carefully, Callum's shaking hand gently placed a key down on the window sill before he stepped back. She snatched it up and jammed it into the lock, a few shaky attempts at getting it right and then it gave. It finally gave and she heaved the window open.
Cold air, blessed cold air flooded into the room and over her while she stood and breathed it in, in, in. While she let it cool and calm her. While her breathing and heart rate slowed and steadied and Callum stood to the side watching her, his teddy pressed to his chest with both hands. She chanced a look at him. He was shaky, pale, but he looked more in control of himself that he had been when she first arrived. Without a word, Callum transferred his teddy to one hand, keeping it firmly pressed up against himself, and he reached into a cupboard with his free hand, bringing down a glass. She watched him draw the glass up to his chest, hands together again while he used a shoulder to nudge the cupboard shut almost silently. Then he moved towards her, towards the sink which she stepped away from to give him access. Keeping both hands together and the teddy somehow dry, he filled the glass and then held it out to her.
"Rory says that when I'm worried I should sip some water," Callum said, with more confidence then she'd heard yet. With less stumbling across his words. Less breaking upon each syllable. Alyaa took the glass with trembling hands and a weak, small smile, and sipped at it for a few minutes.
"Thank you," she said. "For the key."
"Oh that's ok," Callum said, blushing. "I like to help. I'm good at helping. M...Master Hayden said that I have my uses... and... and Rory says I'm very good at helping."
"You are Callum," Alyaa said, almost reaching out to touch him but stopping herself. "You really helped me."
"Thank you. Thank you."
"I'm..." she took one more deep and steadying breath in. "... I'm getting hungry. I always make too much. My Opa always said I make too much. But I'm sure you and me won't let anything go to waste will we."
Callum smiled and shook his head, ducking it down shyly and rubbing his cheek against the top of his teddy's head.
"No... no waste."

Ahogyan nekem is adnak tippeket mások listái. Köszi mindenkinek a közös gondolkodást!

Carabao Cup: Newport 1-1 Newcastle (5-6 pens) -kicks
Jonjo Shelvey had an eventful game, missing a glorious chance and getting booked before scoring Newcastle’s equaliser
Newcastle narrowly avoided becoming League Two Newport County’s latest scalp as they scored a late equaliser before winning on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
Tristan Abrahams put the Exiles ahead in the fifth minute with a bouncing shot which Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie should have saved.
Scot Bennett and Padraig Amond missed chances to extend their lead, while County keeper Nick Townsend denied Ryan Fraser and Miguel Almiron.
Just as Newcastle’s search for a late equaliser looked destined to end in vain, Jonjo Shelvey curled a beautiful shot into the top corner.
With no extra time played, that goal took the game straight to penalties, and it was Newport defender Brandon Cooper who missed the decisive penalty as he blasted over.
That was only the third missed spot-kick from 12 overall, with Newcastle’s Joelinton and Newport’s Ryan Taylor the others who failed to score.
Newcastle may feel they deserved victory with their second-half dominance but it was a cruel way for Newport to lose and miss out on another memorable cup upset.
In the past two years, they had beaten Leeds United, Leicester City and Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, while they had drawn with Tottenham and made life uncomfortable for Manchester City.
Mike Flynn’s side had also accounted for two Championship clubs, Swansea City and Watford, in this season’s EFL Cup to reach the last 16 for the first time.
County may have sensed another upset was in the offing when they saw Steve Bruce had made seven changes to the Newcastle side which had snatched a controversial 1-1 draw at Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday – and the home side made the perfect start.
Scott Twine unleashed a fierce shot from 25 yards which dipped on to the crossbar and bounced out to Abrahams, who controlled the ball and struck a relatively tame effort which Gillespie could only help into the net.
Tristan Abrahams’ goal was his fourth in three games in all competitions
The goal was a little fortuitous but Newport were well worth their lead, which they were twice close to doubling when Bennett and then Amond fired powerful half-volleys narrowly over.
Newcastle, by contrast, were lethargic and could only muster a handful of first-half shots on goal from Jacob Murphy and Shelvey.
The visitors had an excellent chance to equalise early in the second half but Ryan Fraser and Miguel Almiron were thwarted in quick succession by a superb double-save by Nick Townsend.
Bruce introduced two strikers worth a combined £60m, Callum Wilson and Joelinton, in an attempt to give Newcastle’s attack a fresh impetus, and that prompted a period of sustained pressure.
For all their dominance of possession, however, Newcastle struggled to carve open their lower-league opponents.
On the rare occasions they did create clear scoring opportunities, they were confronted by determined Newport defending, which was strikingly evident when Cooper denied Fraser what seemed a certain goal with a brilliant sliding block.
Cooper’s last-ditch intervention demonstrated how much cup ties like this can mean for clubs such as Newport, who received £125,000 for having this game televised – particularly precious as lower-league clubs count the cost of the coronavirus pandemic.
But this was not to be a match-winning contribution from Cooper.
With three minutes left, Shelvey turned just inside the Newport penalty area and stroked the ball into the top far corner with a brilliantly measured strike to take the game to penalties.
Then to compound Newport and Cooper’s heartbreak, it was the young defender on loan from Swansea whose missed penalty gave Newcastle victory in the shoot-out.
