Boxing Day.

I don’t normally eat supermarket steaks but this was gifted to me at work.

Ridge Lytton Springs 2014.

Steak, chips and green matter. Haven’t had fillet steak in more than two decades and had forgotten how meltingly tender the cut is but lacking any flavour whatsoever.

Holy Moly, this is my kind of Chardonnay! The 2018 @tastemcintyre Chardonnay is out of Santa Lucia Highlands, which is in Monterey, which is in the Central Coast of California. The strongest aromas on the nose are ginger and banana and vanilla, followed by pineapple, cooked apple, and buttered biscuit. Uuuuuungh!!! When was the last time that I expressed my love for Chardonnay to you all? It's been too long. So, DAMN I LOVE CHARDONNAY! On the palate it's full bodied with a buttery mouthfeel and moderate acidity. There's flavors of pear juice, banana, vanilla, baking spices, and ginger. It finishes smooth and lush and eloquent, without a bit of tartness from the acidity and a bit of ginger heat. And, call me crazy, I even get a little white chocolate on the finish. For $28 this is one hell of a Chard. It gives you everything that you expect in an oaked Chardonnay while not getting carried away with malo or oak, while both are still present. This should be a consistent case buy for Chardonnay fans who can drop the bucks, and I don't think I've ever said that about any other wine on this blog. I loved this wine. It's got solid Chardonnay expression with a great price for its excellent quality. Spotlight: Stave and Steel Cabernet Sauvignon

Happy Saturday!

Today I’m sharing a bottle that I nabbed for myself a few weeks ago from Aldi (!!), and we’ll be learning about the region from which this delightful bottle joined us from. 

So, on we go. The bottle in question is one Stave and Steel Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 vintage. This is currently in stock at Aldi (if you’re in the UK), for £8.99.

Stave and Steel is particularly special because the wine has been aged in Kentucky Bourbon Barrels for at least four months. This gives the wine a complex flavour profile with a beautiful lick of Whiskey right at the end. The barrels also lend their name to the wine - fun fact! Stave is the plural of Staff which is the long piece of wood that make up the perimeter of a barrel. The wine itself is a rich, deep ruby colour. 

Let’s talk about how it is on the nose. Aside from the obvious kick of Bourbon that presents itself, we’re also treated to some Vanilla, pepper and a lovely red fruit/jammy kind of aroma. Overall very appetising. 

On the palette, Stave and Steel is fairly acidic and high in Tannins, this is a strong, full bodied Cab Sauv for sure. It’s worth noting that this wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes so we’re getting all of the classic flavours that we love from this grape. Ideally, you should look to decant the wine for roughly an hour before you want to drink it, to give it time to mellow out. This would be A+ with a steak, but if red meat isn’t your thing, this would be perfect with a good cheese board, particularly those hard cheeses that can stand up to flavour. 

Stave and Steel is from the Paso Robles region of California, so let’s take a look at what this region is all about shall we? This region sits in the most Southern area of Northern California, and sits roughly halfway between LA and San Fransisco. Wine grapes were first introduced here in the 1700’s although commercial wine making didn’t really take off until the 1800’s, when there was an emphasis on family-owned vineyards. 

As we’re dealing with a region that is peppered with hills and valleys, this lends some interesting characteristics to the wines due to the variations in weather conditions and localised climates. Coastal air that would typically influence the grapes to produce more crisp wines, is diluted by the hills that allow the temperature to rise in the valleys. It also takes the edge of the acidity of the wine produced here.The super high daytime temperatures of this region are counter-balanced by the massive drop in temperatures overnight, allowing the grapes to cultivate sugar during the day, while maintaining their acidity and crispness due to the cool evening temps. 

While researching this region, my favourite nugget of info I came across (courtesy of this article from WineFolly), is that Paso Robles is often called ’the Wild West of California Wine’, kind of sounds a little badass, right? This region is also currently America’s faster growing region. The number of wineries has grown from 50 to 200+ in the past few years, so they must be doing something right over there! Cab Sav makes up roughly 55% of all grapes grown here so competition is hot.

April is @matchbookwines Month, with reviews focusing on their wine all month! Made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec, this wine was aged in French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels for 12 months. The color of the wine is ruby red. Like the 2016 vintage, on the nose there's aromas of tobacco, eucalyptus, mocha, black cherries, and a pinch of sea salt (maybe more like ice melt?). Such a good nose. On the palate it's medium bodied with a rich mouthfeel, dusty tannin, and a brighter acidity than I remember from other vintages. There's flavors of black cherries, cassis, black tea, anise, and vanilla. Then it finishes with black cherries, anise, pencil shavings, and astringency from that dusty tannin. This Cabernet has been a favorite suggestion of mine for $15 for years. As mid-range California Cabernet seems to be trending more and more to being lush juice bombs, this is always just a solid Cabernet for the price with the classic Cabernet profile. 😎🍷 Começando a semana “daquele jeito” com um belo Pinot Noir californiano para animar! 🇺🇸 Este é o “Meiomi Pinot Noir 2019” da @MeiomiWines — um vinho elaborado com 100% Pinot Noir provenientes de três terroirs californianos distintos: 59% Monterrey County, 22% Santa Babara County e 19% Sonoma County. Cada lote foi vinificado separadamente e o vinho final maturou 6 meses em barricas de carvalho francês. 🍷 A coloração é rubi de intensidade média+ na taça. Os aromas mostram fruta vermelha madura, caramelo, tabaco, coco e especiarias. Na boca é meio-seco, tem acidez moderada, corpo médio+ e taninos medios- e muito macios. Muita fruta madura e especiarias, com longa persistência. 📝 Um vinho amplo, encorpado e muito macio, com bastante fruta, e aromas característicos da passagem por barricas. O dulçor não me desagradou, apesar de não ser minha praia.
