so wild that anyone with an ounce of common sense would know that you’re talking about the levels of medical knowledge that Eddie has in comparison to Tommy… especially since we’ve never seen Tommy administer any kind of medical aid…
if people really wanna harass you over not knowing the damn California EMT certification laws I pray for the people in their lives that have to deal with them declaring someone a horrible person for not knowing something or misspeaking.
What a scary person to be around if you are always afraid of saying something wrong around them.
Appreciate you saying that!!

darlin paramedic lore?? 👁👁 I'm intrigued
DAVID HAVING TO DUCK UNDER THE DOORFRAME im going to loose it.
they seem to have a past sibling-ish relationship, im excited to see how you explore that!! PLUS THE LIL FLASHBACK WITH GABE???????? why do u traumatize my babies like this,,,,,,,
also I love how you write sam and darlins banter, I love a good slow burn, the canon seemed a little bit rushed imo, but I feel like you're going to do them justice
another great read, can't wait for the next one!!!
rip darlin u would've loved all the dasher fanart on tumblr
-🦀
Crab anon you GET ME!!!
Yes! All firefighters in California have to be certified EMTs! So all of the firefighters have certification even if they’re not manning an ambulance.
I’m actually not sure if California firehouses have dedicated firefighters/EMTs but um… this is my lil fun story and idc.
I thoroughly believe that Mr. David Shaw is like… 6’3. He’s a giant. Ash is like. An inch or two shorter than him. Milo is a perfectly normal height and he just looks small next to those two.
And yes, David and Darlin for sure had a sibling ish relationship, he’s just bad at expressing himself emotionally and they just have a general distrust of emotional connection. It turns into a two, volatile cats thrown into one carrier type situation. Gabe evened them out, but uh… yeah. And oh boy do I have more in store in relation to one Gabriel Shaw. I’m not done using him to torture people not by a long shot 😈
Thank you so much! I love banter more than anything and I do miss their bickering from early on. I think that, considering most relationships on the channel started already established or moved straight to being together within the first video or so, they are Technically a slow burn. But I need more. Longer. MORE PINING!!!
Thank you so much my friend!!
Listen darlins just saying what we’re all thinking

character name: atticus michael cortes
nickname: atti
age & dob: september 24, 1994 (30)
gender identity & pronouns: male, he/him/his

residential area: ocean crest apartments
occupation: firefighter for aurora bay fd
place of birth: aurora bay, california
length of time in aurora bay: all his life (30 years)
personality traits: + fastidious, - avoidant
faceclaim: taylor zakhar perez
FAMILY.
mother: dinah cortes (née mikhail)
father: elias cortes
BIO.
tw biphobia
though the only child of dinah and elias cortes, atticus was born into a large, loving family on both sides, with enough cousins to ensure that he never felt robbed of any close sibling bonds
grew up right there in aurora bay. was generally a good kid up and through his teens, was an okay academic, and if anything maybe just lacked a sense of direction. it wasn't that he did nothing, but rather the opposite.
almost as if to over-compensate for not feeling passionate about anything, he tried literally everything, and usually overextended himself to do so. needed sets built for the school play? hand him a paintbrush. student council elections? hell yeah, he could slap his face on a poster. soccer tryouts? debate? yearbook? tried out, debated, yearbooked.
by the time graduation rolled around, he was no closer to figuring out what it was he was doing with his life, so while many of his friends went off to schools all across the country, atticus elected to stay home and attend the local community college in hopes he'd come out of it with a better idea on what came next for him.
he didn't, but he did come out of it with a better understanding of himself...it was his sophomore year when atticus discovered and began to explore his bisexuality.
unfortunately, before he could share this information with his parents on his own terms, his mom walked in on him and a guy he'd been seeing, and the resulting fallout was devastating.
though he'd hesitated in sharing with them, atticus truly had never imagined his parents reacting anything but supportively, as they always had, and while his dad lived up to that idea as best as he could, his mom made it quite clear that she did not approve.
the usual peace of their home quickly dissolved, and after a particularly nasty fight, atticus found himself throwing whatever of his would fit into a duffel bag and hightailing it out of there after being told to go.
rotated between surfing on a few different friend's couches, downplaying the severity of his displacement. always having had a hard time admitting when he needed help (and still shaken from his misjudgment of his mom's reaction), it took his dad finally mentioning what had happened to the rest of the family for him to turn to them for assistance.
his schoolwork suffered during this time, and without the financial support his parents had been offering, college was placed on the back burner until things became more stable for him.
worked various odd jobs during this time, usually multiple at a time, once again overcompensating. it wasn't that he wasn't particularly good at any of them, but nothing had excited him the way he was hoping it would, so he simply went through the motions.
it was while on one of these jobs (pizza delivery boy for fired up) that he came across the fire station, and found himself almost touched by the sense of camaraderie he saw there. they were a family.
didn't immediately jump to the decision, but after a few more dead-end jobs, he kept coming back to the idea of it, and before he knew it he was enrolling for his emt certification.
it hasn't been an easy road, and it's demanding work, but it's the first time in his life that something he was doing felt right, something he was genuinely happy to wake up every morning for.
has just hit his five years on the job; toys with the idea of moving his way up through the ranks, but for right now is comfortable where he's at.
HEADCANONS.
yes those are his real eyelashes
went through a bleach blonde phase…rough. before he dyed it back, he let his cousin paint whatever she wanted into it
starts every morning off by completing the NY Time’s mini puzzle, his record is currently 28 seconds
breakfast taco connoisseur
lost a bet several years ago and has a lip tattoo that was supposed to have faded by now…still hasn’t
jagged scar on his knee from where he busted it trying to impress a girl in junior high by riding his bike with no hands—hit a rock, flipped over the handlebars, but he got his first kiss out of it so…worth it
knows it’s time to go to bed when his tiktok fyp starts showing him those pleasing trader joe’s sign writing videos
has never flown before, but when he needs to clear his head, there's a spot near the airport he likes to park in and lay on his hood and watch the planes take off. it makes him and whatever he's going through feel smaller.
has slowly been repairing his relationship with his mom, mostly on a sweep it under the rug, don't talk about it basis...which is not ideal, but neither was not talking to her, so even if it's not right, he's choosing to be the "bigger person" though he knows he wasn't in the wrong
not a gambler but is not (usually) one to back down from something either, no matter his odds (re: lip tattoo)
is currently on a recreational softball team made up of other firefighters in ab and neighboring towns--their team name? smoke signals.

[ mason gooding | cis man | he/him | twenty-six ] —— welcome to grimrose, calvin alexander bowan . it’s cool that you’re here, you know. haven’t you heard of the history of this place… anyway, how’s being a local who has been in town for three years, especially since you spend most of your days as an paramedic/firefighter at the grimrose firehouse? also, not that it’s a bad thing, of course, but i’ve heard people say you can be a little boastful more than you are jovial… but that’s just coming from people who are bored here, i promise. to me, you remind me of smells like teen spirit by nirvana and the ash that clings to your clothes for three days, longing for the hands that once held and hurt you to bring you back to the surface, a laugh that is hardly uncontrollable, and always being in crowds so you’re never alone. hope to see you around, calvin .
full name — calvin alexander bowan nick name — vinnie , houck age — twenty-six date of birth — may 14 place of birth — san diego , california current location — grimrose, new hampshire gender — cis male pronouns — he/him religion — nonreligious / atheist occupation — paramedic / firefighter education level — associates in paramedicine , several certificates residence — townhouse in edgewater oasis family — muriel bowan (nee hastings) [mother , deceased ] , clyde bowan [father , living ] finances — lower middle class / living pay check to pay check spoken languages — english faceclaim / voiceclaim — mason gooding
background - tw mentions of terminal illness (cancer) in the first bullet point
it took four times for the bowan couple to conceive ; each time another piece of muriel lost in the grief that she wanted to leave something for her husband . she was sick , and nothing could change that but a child could . it meant that every obstacle the couple had undergone was worth it - getting a greencard for her husband was hard enough as he was a black man from another country, but having her family finally accept him as her groom was hard enough so why add cancer ? the pregnancy was a risk but she was determined - she pushed , and pushed , and lord , she pushed again . calvin was a beautiful son even at birth and he was cherished even those three years they had together before her body was returned to the earth .
calvin hardly remembers if what he remembers of his mother is real or some figment of what a mother should be like from what he’s heard from his friends . he got to know her through stories told by his grandparents growing up : she was loving , she was smart and oh , you have her pretty eyes . the energy he had as a toddler made the single father nearly exasperated but he was grateful that the child never had any time to miss what he could’ve had . life was so full inside him and nothing could stop him from making the most of every minute . there was beauty in the smallest of things and calvin understood that from an early age .
always the class clown but always in trouble . he soon had his growth spurt and was the captain of his basketball team . sure , he might have been the only black kid in his grade but it was because of his skill that the coach picked him right ? calvin had many friends but never a best friend - too little time to get to know someone who was always moving to the next step .
the time for college applications came but calvin decided that four years was nearly too long . he needed a job and it was quite a coincidence that his guidance counselor heard about some cheap course the local government was holding to train emergency medical responders (EMT-R). a quick certification and it could prove to be the kind of environment to keep the bustling teenager busy . a year passes and he’s gotten his emergency medical technician (EMT) certificate and a paramedic notices his potential . paramedic school is no quick feat ; but the boy only needed some guidance and accountability .
it’s when he meets the love of his life does he learn of grimrose . he had a feeling that what they had was real - and it certainly was . his father would be fine in san diego so why couldn’t calvin do something for himself for once ? the coast town was certainly not as busy as san diego and the people may certainly be a little nicer too . it only takes three suitcases to move his things across the country but it only takes four months for calvin to move out of the house they’d bought together . she knew he worked twenty-four hour shifts three days a week - and the late nights at her office were certainly not for the promotion . but now he’s gotten too comfortable in grimrose to leave ever again.
several head cannons :p
calvin is very book smart - but that’s about it . he is very easy going and friendly to any one that reciprocates it . to someone who may be an introvert , he might be a tad bit much as he’s always talking or needing to say something but he’s gotten better at not interrupting someone while they’re talking .
runs on energy drinks . he barely sleeps mostly because of the innate rush that is always coursing him and it’s certainly has something to do with the undiagnosed ADHD . if he’s not at work , he’s probably jogging or wishing he was at work .
has many friends but he requires a very patient person to get past the acquaintance stage . there is no ill intention but it’s hard for him to slow down the madness that is in his head .

CHARACTER INFORMATION
face claim: Gong Yoo
full name: Yoon Soo Hyuk (English name: Samuel Yoon)
nickname(s) / goes by: Sam
pronouns & gender: he/him, cis man
sexuality: demiromantic asexual
birth date: February 29, 1980
birth place: Marina, California
arrival to merrock: November 2023
housing: Coast & Pier
occupation: Paramedic
work place: Town Hall / Merrock FD
family: Parents and a younger sister
relationship status: single
PERSONALITY
A lot of the time, Sam prefers to be on his own though he doesn't really avoid people. He's actually friendly with anyone, rarely raises his voice even when the other person doesn't seem to be able to do the same. Doesn't mean he never gets angry or disappointed. He just doesn't usually show it, at least not loudly or in an obvious way, unless it is necessary for him to visibly react.
WRITTEN BY: Rhys (they/them), GMT+8.
BACKGROUND / BIO
Sam was born and raised in the town of Marina, California. He left when he was 20, waiting until his sister was in high school before going to university in Los Angeles. He and his sister were close and he waited as long as he could until he thought it was a good time for him to leave. He went to a community college to get his EMT certificate then worked part time as an EMT until he left Monterey.
He studied art for two years before deciding that it wasn't for him, despite sketching and drawing being something he'd love doing when he had some extra time. He liked working as part of the ambulance crew better and went to get his paramedic degree.
Sam heard about Merrock from his sister who visited the town one summer during her break. She told him about it, sending him a lot of pictures and videos from the trip. She joked to him that it would be a good place for him to go and retire...if it wasn't for the cold and the snow. Sam just told her then that he had no interest in moving to the other side of the country.
Things started to change when his parents told them that they wanted to go and live in South Korea for a little while and spend some time with their own parents, Sam's grandparents. His sister had moved out of state a few years prior. So, while helping his parents take care of things, Sam began to think that maybe he could use a change of scenery as well.
He left his previous position and decided to take a break for a couple of months. His parents had moved to South Korea for six months by then and Sam visited his sister in Portland where she lived and stayed in the city for a couple of weeks.
It was then when he got reminded about Merrock and decided to visit the town before flying to South Korea to visit his family. The short visit was memorable enough that he made the decision then that he'd give the town a try for a new start.

Comprehensive CPR and Emergency Training in Jacumba
Jacumba, a rural community in Southern California, places a strong emphasis on safety and preparedness. Palm Desert Resuscitation Education (PDRE) provides essential training and certification courses that equip individuals with life-saving skills. CPR in Jacumba is a vital course designed to teach participants how to respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies. With CPR training, individuals can significantly improve the survival chances of victims by performing chest compressions, rescue breaths, and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) operations.
CPR Certification in Jacumba follows the most current guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA), ensuring that participants are fully prepared to act in critical moments. Whether you’re a healthcare professional or a layperson, CPR certification provides the skills and confidence to respond effectively in an emergency. PDRE offers CPR Classes in Jacumba that are interactive and hands-on, enabling participants to practice real-world techniques in a safe learning environment.
In addition to CPR, PDRE offers First Aid Certification in Jacumba. This certification is essential for anyone looking to provide immediate care during medical emergencies, such as cuts, burns, fractures, or allergic reactions. First Aid training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to stabilize a victim until professional help arrives.
For those in healthcare, BLS in Jacumba is a more advanced certification that builds on CPR skills. BLS Certification in Jacumba focuses on team-based resuscitation, AED use, and coordinated emergency response techniques. This certification is required for many healthcare providers, such as nurses, EMTs, and physicians, ensuring they are ready to respond to life-threatening emergencies in both clinical and pre-hospital settings.
For advanced medical emergencies, ACLS in Jacumba is available for healthcare professionals. ACLS Certification in Jacumba includes in-depth training on the management of cardiac arrest, stroke, and other severe cardiovascular events. This course emphasizes ECG interpretation, airway management, and emergency pharmacology, ensuring that healthcare providers are well-prepared to handle complex emergencies.
PALS in Jacumba is another critical course offered by PDRE, focusing on pediatric emergencies. PALS certification is designed for healthcare providers who work with children and infants. It covers a wide range of pediatric medical emergencies, including respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. PALS Online in Jacumba offers flexibility for busy professionals, allowing them to complete their certification at their own pace.
Finally, NRP in jacumba is a specialized program that focuses on newborn resuscitation. Healthcare providers who work in neonatal care or delivery rooms benefit from this program, as it provides comprehensive training on managing newborn emergencies in the critical moments after birth.

From Classroom to Campus: Crawford High School’s New Year Leads a New Way
San Diego Unified School District officials, students, and their colt mascot rang in the new school year at Crawford High School in the El Cerritos community Monday morning.
The August 12th date might seem earlier than usual. According to Dr. Erin Richison, SDUSD Area Superintendent of High Schools, this is a decision three years in the making. By moving up the academic calendar to start earlier, the district hopes to support students who are dual-enrolled in high school and at neighboring colleges. The calendar will continue to include 180 school days, but now provide more instructional time before spring assessments, including SAT and Advanced Placement exams.
This is just one way Crawford High School plans to prepare its students to transition out of high school. This new school year comes with new career pathway programs and a new guaranteed enrollment agreement with California State University San Marcos.
The new admission agreement, similar to Sweetwater Union High School District’s with San Diego State University, guarantees admission for eligible high school graduates and will provide college prep opportunities starting in middle school. For the diverse community Crawford High serves, the admission will be a game-changer for students.
“A lot of immigrant families find that Crawford is home to their student. They feel very welcome and included that they belong here. But a part of that, and because 40 different countries are represented… 35 languages, 72 dialects, some things do get lost in translation, as it relates to how to apply for college, how to pay for college,” said Dr. Reashon Villery, principal at Crawford High School.
“We want our students to know that not only can you get accepted into college and have automatic acceptance, but also just a variety of options with financial aid.”
Crawford’s students will also have an array of programs to join this year. The newest additions are Emergency Medical Technician pathway and a swim class for students, along with the existing law academy, automotive class, and health career pathway with Rady Children’s Hospital.
Through the EMT pathway, students can chose an alternative to a traditional four-year education after high school and still gain access to medical careers. The goal is that by the end of high school, students will either gain a certificate or enough college credit to get started in an EMT career.
The swim class, aside from teaching students water safety and offering a new activity, holds the opportunity to become a junior lifeguard after the 24-week class.
At the leading edge of high school programs is the Crawford Academy of Law, which has been established since 2011. Through a state grant, students in their sophomore through senior years can learn about careers in the legal field and gain work experience from courts and law firms.
One of the course’s highlights is the classroom lined with wooden podiums with a judge and jury stand, which simulates a real courtroom. Since the first time since the pandemic began, students will work with the newly reinstated San Diego Teen Court to be trained in restorative justice using real cases with youth offenders. Students will receive mentoring from a judge or an attorney who will supervise as students take charge in questioning and decisions, says program coordinator Ray Beattie.
Aside from the hands-on experience, students benefit from the Crawford Academy of Law Foundation, which gives scholarship money to those who participate in mock trials, complete the attorney program, and are aspiring leaders. According to Beattie, the foundation awarded around $20,000 in scholarships to sophomores, juniors, and seniors at the Academy Awards in May.
Crawford High School principal Reashon Villery said that she is proud to be part of the high school’s vision.
“There are a lot of great programs here at Crawford, in addition to the sports, in addition to all of the wonderful clubs, I just feel honored to be blessed to be leading such a beautiful school community,” said Villery. *Reposted article from the Times of SD by Hannah Ramirez on August 12, 2024

Note
Pretty sure all California firefighters are required to have EMT certifications. Paramedics are a different sort of licensing/training. All of them should be EMTs though.
i just looked it up you're right!

CHARACTER INFORMATION
face claim: Kim Jae Wook
full name: Yoon Soo Hyuk
nickname(s) / goes by: Samuel / Sam (English name: Samuel Yoon)
pronouns & gender: he/him, cis man
sexuality: demiromantic asexual
birth date: February 29, 1980
birth place: San Francisco, California
arrival to merrock: last couple of weeks (2023)
housing: two bedroom beach house
occupation: EMT
work place: Town Hall (has only been working there for a few days)
family: parents, younger sibling with significant age gap
relationship status: single
PERSONALITY
Sam is quiet and protective. He's not a fan of getting involved in an argument, would try his best to not take sides but wouldn't hide his (quiet) disapproval if, in his opinion, someone is being overly stubborn. And he can be a bit of a loner.
WRITTEN BY: Rhys (she/her), gmt+8.
BACKGROUND / BIO
His parents moved to the US in the late 70s. He was born and raised in San Francisco. His younger sister was born eleven years later. Despite the age gap, they're really close.
He learned about Merrock from his sister. She and her friends went to Merrock for a vacation, staying in town for almost a week. She kept showing him photos and videos about her trip, teasing him that it would be a good place for him to go and retire.
His sister moved to Portland a few years before Sam moved to Merrock. His sister kept trying to get him to move from San Francisco as well, half-serious and half-joking since their parents still lived in San Francisco at the time. Sam managed to ignore her for a little while. Until their parents decided to return to South Korea for his grandparents. He moved to Merrock eight months after his parents left. His sister was slightly annoyed that he chose a small town over a city but didn't try to stop him, though made him promise to get at least a two bedroom house so she could visit anytime.
Sam didn't immediately consider becoming a paramedic after he finished high school. He went to university on an arts related major for a couple of years, while doing so he got his basic first aid training and certification in the process because he felt like giving it a try. He dropped out midway through his fourth semester, going back home and staying with his family for the rest of the year before then started seriously considering a career as a medic.
He is fluent in Korean and English. His parents used (and still use) Korean when talking at home.
Sam likes to sketch. It's the main reason his parents told him to take Arts in university. He prefers pencil and paper but eventually settled with using a tablet while at work. Easier to carry around.

i mean eddie could be an aemt? i think california recognizes them but i know new york city doesn't so. i'm not sure about whether la recognizes them. you see more aemts in rural areas tho bc it requires less schooling than paramedic certification but still has a wider scope of practice than emts. ik aemts can start IVs and administer more medications but there's still a wide gap between paramedics and aemts in terms of scope of practice. also i don't think they would be allowed to do needle decompression so my original complaint stands lol. idk i think they just want eddie to be in a grey area bc of his army medic training even tho that means he would not have the certification to do the things he does w the lafd. it does irritate me tho.
ok this is good to know 😭 like i said idk anything about this stuff. but yeah it's silly that they lean so heavily on the army medic thing... paramedic eddie lives on in my heart
