my favourite part of making Billy and Chrissy best friends (or more) is that they give each other what the other needs

like, Chrissy has this softness about her that is undeniable and she's feminine and comfortable in that, she has no problem being soft but she's also very hurt (just like Billy)

and Billy is hardened by the abuse of his father, his softness is hidden under that hard shell that's thickened over the years, to a point where he doesn't feel it anymore

but Chrissy can soften him, she could bring that sweetness out of him with her gentle smile and kindness, while Billy can remind her that she does have a voice and she can use it to defend herself

I believe they're two sides of the same coin and I will forever love these two 🤍

How I imagine different Billy Hargrove ships getting together because he refuses to leave my head (I’m procrastinating research for my dissertation)

Harringrove: It’s a long process across many years of hooking up and breaking up and fighting. They seem to spilt up for good in their late twenties until they reconnect twenty years later, without any youthful headstrong feelings that kept them apart. They find each other again in a bar in California and just never leave.

Mungrove: Billy learns about Eddie because they run in similar circles in Hawkins. It’s such a small scene, meeting is inevitable and they both have such similar tastes, they hit it off immediately. Billy is eventually worn down and lets Eddie design them couples Hellfire Club shirts.

Calicheer: it’s after cheer practice and Chrissy finds Billy hanging out aimlessly outside the gymnasium, reluctant to go back home. After a long night of talking, he makes a slightly clunky offer of a date and Chrissy is so charmed by him, she accepts.

Hollogrove: Post Starcourt, Billy and Heather are in adjacent beds in hospital. They’d been friends for a couple of months with a reciprocated crush neither had known about. Nothing like almost dying to confess your true feelings for someone though. They escape Hawkins together.

Argilly: There genuinely had never been anyone else. A first kiss for both of them at fifteen, then two years later Neil had found out. Billy was taken from a medium sized town in California to a small town in Indiana. Writing to each other is exceptionally difficult until after the mindflayer. Then Billy finds him again.

Kingrove: It was a secret from literally everyone, both having homophobic and abusive fathers. Good thing both of them are very good at keeping secrets. They break up briefly due to an argument about where to move after high school but get back together within 48 hours. Steve and Heather called it the longest 48 hours of their life.

Byergrove: Jonathan really loves photography. Billy has a passion for short stop motion films. They get paired together for a film project in school and get gradually closer throughout the month before the project is due. Jonathan makes the first move. Billy has a *small* crisis and runs off, before eventually accepting.

Cargrove: Jason is very, very closeted. Billy, slightly less so. Jason decides he wants to *experiment* with same sex relationships and sets his sight on Billy. Billys initial reaction is fuck no, because he isn’t just an experiment but Jason manages to prove that he’s genuine. Eventually.

Harringroveson: Billy and Eddie are together very very fast and Steve can’t decide who he’s jealous of. Turns out, it’s both. But he manages to endear himself to Billy and Eddie with a genuinely earnest and sweet nature and they decide to become a polycule. It works very well.

Chrissy gets so sick of being the perfect girl everyone else wants her to be so when Billy Hargrove, new to Hawkins and much desired amongst the girls her age, makes a move with her she's happy to take a leap and start messing around with him.

Catching feelings is much less expected, but the way Billy goes out of his way to be gentle with her makes Chrissy think that maybe, just maybe, he might like her too.

Portion from a blurb from a while back in my drafts that’s a modern college au with established calicheer and pre-harringrove (polyfic vibes). I gotta have chubby Billy getting loved on obviously.

There's always something going on in the house. A kickback, a movie night, really anything that entails having alcohol and forgetting about school work in its entirety for the evening.

Whatever the case may be, they broadly refer to it as boys night.

If a message pops up in the groupchat calling for a boys night, it doesn't really matter what day of the week it is, the kitchen floods with snacks and booze without question. It's made for some of the most fun nights that Steve has had since starting college.

The only downside is that Hargrove never shows up.

It used to be a thing, maybe Tommy or Eddie or one of the other guys would poke and tease him with the hopes of getting him to join the hangout. At first, Billy would just tsk and ignore them.

Then he eventually got fed up and snapped.

For someone who's usually so quiet and reserved, it made a few of the guys jump out of their skin to hear his voice boom out of nowhere. Sharp and bitter and enough to convince them to stop pressing the matter altogether.

The most he'd ever do is steal a couple of snacks from the kitchen before he retreated to the solitude of his room — something Steve noticed fairly early on.

Food was the quickest way to pacify the beast, turns out.

He and Billy aren't really the best of friends, per se, but there's a certain trust there. Built on the foundation of shared snacks and simple conversations about the mundane.

It's not unusual for Steve to fix himself some food and, if Billy is home, which he usually is, he'll make an extra plate.

He does it so frequently, in fact, that now Billy will wander into the kitchen when he hears the oven or the stove being used, because Steve is one of the only people in the house that actually cooks.

They chat about things like classes, how their cars are running, and Billy's ever-elusive girlfriend.

He scarcely mentions her, but when he does, the softest smile creeps onto his lips. For a moment, he doesn't look tired and irritable. Like simply thinking about her changes his entire disposition.

Over their various conversations, Steve comes to learn a few things about Billy — his girlfriend's name is Chrissy, he's openly bisexual, and he'll eat just about anything you put in front of him.

The last one Steve figured out on his own, in the vain of trying to make enough food for the both of them.

No matter what it is or how much Steve makes, Billy can and will keep going until there's none left.

Something that the other guys also learned not to tease him about.

Nowadays, when Tommy gets in one of his moods, he directs the bulk of it at Steve. As annoying as it is, Steve gets it — he's not a nearly 300 pound machine built for murder. Though, he does frequently wonder if maybe none of the other guys have really tried to befriend the blond.

The first time that Billy brought Chrissy over, Steve's suspicions on that were confirmed.

No one else even knew that Billy had a girlfriend.

It didn't really matter either way. Hargrove had a girl on his arm and a scowl on his face and no one was gonna touch that, so the two disappeared to his room without any hassle.

Admittedly, given that it's happened once or twice before, Steve had worried for a second that Tommy or maybe even Eddie would say something stupid and he'd have to break up a fight.

The most baffling part is that Chrissy is accurate to Billy's description of her.

She's a little more than a head shorter than him, dainty and bubbly like no one Steve has ever met before. The complete opposite of Billy.

Somehow it works.

The more often she comes over, the more Steve is puzzled about their relationship as a whole — she essentially gets away with doing and saying whatever she wants to him, and Billy lets her.

She constantly calls him cute and pretty and does things like pat his ass when he passes by her. Things that don't seem like they'd be allowed.

Oddly enough, that's what starts making the other guys warm up to Billy. Seeing him be soft and pacified around his giggly girlfriend while she uses their barely-working oven to make lasagna.

She and Eddie hit it off almost immediately. Doesn't shut him down when he starts talking about nerdy stuff, and she manages to convince Jonathan to come out and photograph some headshots for her theater program in exchange for free tickets to a performance.

She cuddles with Billy in the kitchen or the living room while he does homework, they occasionally study together, and her presence starts to become more commonplace fairly quickly.

Enough for her to be generous enough to bake brownies and every so often cook eggs for the entire house.

It's one night in particular that she's over, having made a huge pot of stew in celebration of the colder weather finally rolling in, that Steve catches the tail end of a conversation between them from just beyond the kitchen.

The food has been eaten, the guys are all gathering in the living room for the most part, raving about the next boys night and whose responsibility it is to buy the drinks this time around.

Chrissy steps behind the stool that Billy's sitting on at the counter and laces her arms around his waist.

"You gonna join boys night?" she murmurs.

Sets her chin on his shoulder and tilts their heads together. Billy sighs and leans back into her, ghosting his hands over the backs of hers.

"Nah."

"How come? Sounds like it's gonna be fun."

"They do that shit like twice a week, I promise I'm not missing out." Billy turns his head and kisses her temple, taking hold of one of her hands. "Besides, boys night means no you."

He lowers his voice significantly towards the end, and it comes out shockingly soft. Steve is almost taken aback by it.

Chrissy giggles.

"You can do guy stuff without me, sweetheart, I don't mind."

"It's the principle of it."

Again, she laughs, but she presses impossibly closer to him. Turns her face towards his neck and noses kisses near the corner of his jaw.

She whispers something to him that Steve can't hear, and Billy huffs a little laugh and spreads a smile. Chrissy smooths her hands over the expanse of his abdomen in large circles, and it quickly has the blond melting under the touch.

It's almost endearing to see how easy it is for her to coax the relaxation out of him. How he all but purrs when she gives him any kind of attention.

Steve understands why he loves her so much.

Things in the kitchen heat up shortly, and Steve takes his leave before he sees anything he shouldn't. The couple slip away up to Billy's room shortly after and leave a sock on the door as a precautionary measure.

Faintly, the creak of the bed frame on the floorboards can be heard. Steve's glad that it's loud enough downstairs for no one else to hear the groans through the walls.

Billy's groans.

It's a few months later, closer to Christmas break, where Billy begrudgingly calls a boys night — he doesn't call it that, but it's the same premise and circumstances as usual, and it has the guys raving with excitement.

He foots the bill for food and drinks, and he orders a lot. Spends most of the time picking at the barbecue, filling his plate with pulled pork and other meats and observing the party games rather than partake in any himself.

Steve lingers. Chats with him casually. Notices easily that Billy is full when he starts to breathe a little heavier, but keeps eating anyway.

Maybe it's not as noticeable to anyone else, but Steve is sure that Billy's put on a generous twenty pounds or so since winter rolled in. He looks significantly softer than before. Fuller.

And Chrissy can never keep her hands to herself when she's around, which tells Steve he isn't going crazy.

"No Chris tonight?" Steve asks.

He leans against the bar where Billy sits, nursing a beer that he lost interest in drinking a little while ago.

The blond is a few drinks in. Not quite buzzed, but relaxed nonetheless. He blows a raspberry and spears a bit of meat on the end of his fork.

"She wants me to do more guy stuff," he sighs. "Better with girl stuff, though."

He kind of murmurs the last bit. Steve smiles. Pats a hand on Billy's shoulder and leaves it there.

They've talked somewhat about how Billy has never really entirely belonged in most masculine spaces. How something always feels kind of off, like there's some disconnect.

And how he prefers to hang out with Chrissy, his friend Heather, and a few of the other girls that the two of them are friends with.

Everyone that Billy socializes with outside of the house is a woman, which Steve is sure no one else is tracking at this point but him.

It makes a lot of sense, in hindsight.

Kind of makes Steve feel a sense of pride, being one of the only guys in the house that Billy seemingly feels totally at ease around.

"You're one of the guys," Steve reassures. Lightly squeezes Billy's shoulder. "They're all super psyched that you're here. Been talking about it like all week."

Billy huffs dejectedly.

"Doesn't feel like it."

"They all have sort of an odd, fearful respect for you, but they like when you're around." Steve smooths his hand over Billy's upper back, which has some of the tension leaving his shoulders. "It's kind of a catch, but if you relax more around them, they'll warm up to you easier. It'll probably mean that you'll be subject to more dumb jokes and teasing, though."

Billy sighs, long and drawn out. Takes a swig from his beer and deliberates for a moment.

"Not good with teasing either," he murmurs.

"I know, bud. Just know that you're liked and you're wanted here, even if you don't party with us all the time."

For a moment, it's quiet. Steve continues to rub the blond's back soothingly.

"Thanks, Stevie," Billy coos.

"Mhm," Steve hums.

They stay there like that for a while. Billy polishes off his plate and reaches to refill it, which has Steve smiling. He eventually resolves to start gently scratching up and down Billy's back, which he seems to enjoy because he makes a grumpy noise every time Steve tries to stop.

Once the last of his beer is drained, and his mild buzz is back, he starts to get fidgety where he stands. Pats Billy's back and smooths his hand in a large circle.

"Think we can move to the couch?" he asks. Hums a laugh when Billy groans in protest. "I'll have Tommy play butler for you, that way you don't have to get up."

Billy considers his options for a moment before he sighs and shifts in his seat, pushing himself up to standing. The two meander into the living room together and find their seats on the sofa.

It's new and it's odd, but it feels right when Steve stretches his arm around Billy's shoulders. It feels even more right when Billy instinctively leans into his side. Like they've sat like this a hundred times and it's not awkward at all.

Truth be told, it really isn't.

Steve traces little shapes against Billy's arm, smiling when he gets fussy the more he eats. Part of Steve wants to tease him, or tell him that maybe he's getting a little too full, but the other part of him wants to let the blond enjoy himself.

After all, who says it's wrong that this is how Billy parties?
