Another year, another Calgary Expo! This year I went as Tennant from Reverse: 1999 and Earring Magic Ken from Barbie! Ken was also my costume of choice at Edmonton Expo '23, and the pic here is from that because I forgot to take any at Cal Expo LOL, plus I'm with a fellow earring magic Ken from a Ken themed improv panel!

Story time...
During the start of COVID-time, I decided to I wanted to re-collect some comics I had in the early 1990s. I didn't want reprints, I wanted originals.
I wanted to go through Todd McFarlane's Marvel work, starting with Daredevil #241 thru Spider-Man #16 (and then Image's Spawn #1-#25 plus the Violator 3-issue series)... and if you know about his run there, well... there were some pricy titles to collect. However, I wanted to do it, so I did it...
Also, due to COVID-time and my disability, I haven't left the apartment aside from medical appointments, voting and a few random times going out for food and eating outdoors [for the vast majority of the time]. We're both take it quite seriously because I really don't need to get any more sick than I am already. Yes, we're always masking when not in the apartment (and sometimes in the apartment when we have contractors coming in to do work). And we're diligent about as well. We haven't gotten sick yet.
(tldr; I basically haven't left the house unless I had to since Nov. 2020)
Fast forward to 2023 and after some life altering events, we decided to order VIP passes for Calgary Comics+Entertainment Expo, all 4 days. We figured with the early access our odds of not "getting sick" were okay. And also to save my leg from too much stress, we planned to rent a wheelchair.
Fast forward to 2024 and we have our VIP passes to the Calgary Comics+Entertainment Expo... and then McFarlane was announced as a late guest. I thought to myself, sure... I'll get an autograph. I can do that.
But as time ticked on, I felt like naaaah... there are bigger fans who could use waiting in line more than myself. An autograph would be nice but I didn't need one.
Then Fan Expo runs a VIP only context to win free autographs from him. Well then! That I could sign up for. My beloved partner, also a big comics book fan (more on the X-Men side of things [and she was able to get all of the X-Men '97 guests who were here, along with the original animated series Producer and Director autographs... and a selfie with Beast!]), also entered.
We both won (of course I'd get ticket 23... she got 24).
Now I needed to pull some "cool covers" so that we could make some choices (picture 1, above).
She chose Spider-Man #12 (and diligently read that 5-book series to get prepared for the day). I wanted to do Spider-Man #8 (for the very local tie-in) but we didn't exactly need two books signed from that series. So... what to choose, what to choose...
Amazing Spider-Man #311 (and it didn't even make the short list... not in the 1st pic) got the pick. It is a cool cover to be sure but I chose it for the nod to late 1980s Cowboy/Western fashion... and since I've grown up in Calgary, I was very aware of that reference (annual cowboy cosplay celebrations tend to do that... yay Calgary Stampede! [hey, if the comic+entertainment fandom has cosplay for CCEE, why not call the say the same sort of thing for the Stampede... this isn't a negative thing]).
When I told McFarlane why I chose the book I did, I got a chuckle and an "Oh wow!".
The only downside is that due to my disability I'm unable to attend day 4 but my beloved partner gets enjoy a day without pushing me around in a wheelchair (averaging over 9000 steps each of the 3 days)... give her arms and legs a big of a break.
But we did get quite lucky in our timings for things and we appreciated the experiences.
So long as we don't "get sick" and recovery time for this body o'mine doesn't take too long, then I think we can plan to attend again next year.

Calgary fan expo 2024:
(Long post, apologies)
Survived! The last year I was at the artist alley at a fanexpo was I thinkā¦. 2019? and I canāt even remember the last year I was at the expo just as a regular attendee, and not as a vendorā¦ must be at least ten years ago by now I think. I had a lot of thoughts yesterday.
But first of all I did want to say, like I said yesterday, Neil Newbon was I think the nicest actor that Iāve ever met at one of these, I really mean that.
The smaller-name actors are always more fun than the bigger names, partly because they tend to not have their heads stuck up their own asses like some of the bigger folks, but also just simply that their lineups are also much much smaller, so you have more time to actually chat with them. (Popular actors can be very much a āhi hello, my name is x, thank you! Bye! situation) All my best memories of getting autographs at cons have been with smaller actors and voice actors and stuff, hands down 100%.
And Iām serious, Neil was the nicest actor Iāve ever met at a con. He is so gracious and polite, humble, and honestly seems to genuinely love interacting with his fans. I had in my head my little lines I wanted to say, so I could make sure I said everything I wanted in the tiny amount of time they allow you to talk to the actor, and then he messed up my little script by wanting to have an actual little chat. We talked about my oldest daughter in Switzerland, and how expensive everything is there, and he said hello to my kids and talked to them a bit, and teased me a little. I said the thing I wanted to, which was to say congratulations for all the accolades and how important BG3 has been to the fans, and he said he appreciates that because the fans are why he does this stuff, truly. Honestly I think he would have chatted even more but I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by then and like that was my cue to leave. What a nice guy though? Dang.
His panel was great as well, British actors are always so interesting because they tend to take acting very academically and professionally, he had a great, smart answer for everything, and so polite even when there were some very nervous people having trouble articulating what they wanted to say. (He also said Larian was an amazing company to work for, and prioritizes their people and their fans over profit, which is so refreshing)
What a lovely dude. I was a fan before but I have to say I think now Iām a little in love.
(btw the one other actor I also really remember talking to and having a great chat with was Tony Todd, who was here like, a million years ago, also such a nice freaking guy, giant goddamned hands, we had a big chat about theater and community theater and stuff.)
Besides that, which was amazing, the whole thing was a bit bittersweet. I had a lot of feelings. Iāve been attending these expos almost since they first began, watching them get bigger and bigger and more exciting. A few years ago the expo chain was bought by an American company and.. the vibe has really changed since then. Itās not all negative, not at all: things feel really well organized now in terms of crowd control, which used to be um. Somewhat of a notorious issue for our expo, to put it mildly. Butā¦ the whole feeling of the show has also changed. Like one of my coworkers said, it feels kind of like just going to a big market. I miss the old announcer that used to come on, I miss the silly little extra events they had like the geek speed dating, I miss the Viking village that they used to have out in the front, justā¦ the little things that made it feel less corporate and more like this exciting passionate convention for all the geeky things you like.
I went to the artist alley and was curious to see if I could find some of my old con buddies, people who I had got to know over the years I attended as an artist. I was kind of surprised that I couldnāt find a single one. In fact I only recognized a handful of booths as ones I had seen regularly in the past: it seems the majority are new. In addition, the artist alley seems to be about half the size it was when I was attending. I was hoping to see old friends to be able to ask them how things were going with the show recently with the new management, but I guess the fact that none of them were there kind of speaks for itself.
Again itās a bit sad, but in a weird way it also makes me feel a bit better, somehow. I miss doing these shows, so much, and I feel so frustrated with myself that I donāt have the energy to keep up with it anymore. This really used to be the absolute hilight of my year, once upon a time. Somehow itās a little comforting to know that Iām not the only one who couldnāt continue to do it.
It was nice to bring my younger kids, anyways. My oldest used to really enjoy attending the expos, and Iām happy I got to share that with them as well.
Iām proud of myself - due to my anxiety I was waffling quite a bit on whether or not I should even bother going, but I feel generally that Iām happy I got over that and ended up going.

AYOOOOO Happy Edmonton Expo 2024 everyone! This year I got to cosplay with my mom! We were the evil queens Ravenna and Freya from the movie The Huntsman: Winter's War. I sewed and built almost every inch of my costume, and boy oh boy it was sure a learning experience! I may rebuild the entire thing before the costume's debut at Calgary Expo haha, but I was still very happy to get to wear it this year. My mom spent over 100 hours individually painting those feathers on her cape and sewing them on. It's soooo cool to see in person, and it moves so freaking well. So happy to have gotten to share this experience with her!
#the huntsman: winter's war#freya cosplay#ravenna cosplay#snow white and the huntsman#mom and daughter cosplay#not a ton of people recognized us#(they especially didn't recognize me#)#which we kinda expected lol#but I loved how many people asked for photos with no understanding of what character she was supposed to be#they were just appropriately impressed by the stunning cape!
