Wanted to thank you for your advice to feed multiple kinds of pellets! The two stores near me stopped stocking Roudybush and I was able to find it elsewhere but it was a real wake-up call that I needed a backup food just in case. So I got Oskar to try out the Caitec OFBs and TOPs. He was deeply suspicious of how healthy they are, but has learned to tolerate the TOPs (he still classifies the OFB as Not Food)

I’ve been wanting to get Sherbie on a healthier pellet than the one she’s on (Kaytee Exact Natural - Cockatiel size). It’s not that Kaytee is bad, but I feel like there’s better. Anyhow, I was also curious to see if Rupert would like them as well, so I went with the medium size. The pictures were little on the website and there wasn’t a very clear idea of the sizing on these Caitec Oven Fresh Bites, but the reviewers said they crumbled fairly easily so I figured I could just break them if they were too big.

They arrived today. H-O-L-Y COW. In what universe is that a medium? On the bright side, they smell very nice-- a bit reminiscent of gingerbread cookies. I poured some in a bag and crushed them down to what I feel is closer to their “small” size. It is yet to be determined if Rupert likes them, but I saw several of them in his water bowl along with some Roudybush pellets, so maybe? I’ll really have to smash these things in to small particles if Sherbie is to try and eat them. I have a feeling she’ll turn her beak up at them.

Uh yeah I can absolutely recommend these Caitec parrot treats for rodents too. Got them today from Chewy and they're a HIT. The shy rats took them with no hesitation, the stashing rats sat and ate all of their pieces immediately rather than risk stashing.

Sam the hamster got a piece and sat on Jack's hand eating half of it immediately, then pouched the rest, but refused to get off Jack's hand again until he was done licking crumbs off it. 😂

And they smell SO good. They're a little softer than I was expecting, but that means they break easily into smaller pieces for divvying out or for small hamsters or mice.

Seeing the pellet conversations got me thinking lol. My bird eats the colorful zupreem pellets bc it’s the diet she was on when I got her but nitpicks about the colors. She just won’t eat the yellow ones. Would she do better swapped over to a colorless type or would she just not eat bc she’s used to the bright colors?

I’m sure it would spare my poor floor some suffering if she wasn’t chucking one specific pellet constantly lol.

It’ll likely take a bit of time for them to observe the new pellets as food but that’s pretty standard for every diet transition. Even going from the same colour of pellet to just a different size or shape can be enough for some birds to need the whole conversion process again to recognize it as food!

You are unlikely to get that food selective consumption happening once you switch though since the vibrant colours are gone. She’ll just be taking in the flavours and texture instead which typically means they’ll eat everything from the bag- unless there happens to be a one off weirdly overcooked pellet.

If I were to recommend a few I’ve found that the caitec oven fresh bites were extremely easy for my birds to take to. I didn’t have to do a conversion at all they just started eating it like it was cookies. Roudybush took a bit of a conversion but wasn’t too bad and Harrison’s is typically pretty quick especially if they like hot pepper bc you can use the hot pepper flavoured pellets to entice them a bit more. Their texture is pretty hard though so if she’s picky on texture they might not work!

Ordered both the golden obles and the caitec oven fresh bites. I couldn’t find much in depth information either way, just people spouting opinions without actually listing any facts about it. Nothing particular negative about either aside from the standard people not understanding that you need to teach birds how to eat pellets so they claim they suck for the fact that their birds won’t eat them.

Still looking in to both of them but we’ll give both a try and see if we notice any differences. Golden obles may be too large for Mia but if they’re soft enough it won’t be an issue. We’ll just have to try and see really.
