This was captured in the local zoo here with the telephoto end of the little Leica lens on the Lumix FZ200 back in 2015. Two stops of underexposure were applied to expose for the highlights.

So I work at a butterfly conservatory as my day job. And we get these beautiful bois called the Cairns Birdwing butterflies (Ornithoptera euphorion). Only the males are this colorful tho; the females are HUGE and brown with the same yellow and red bodies. In August, some fantasy illustrators do the Smaugust challenge where they draw dragons all month and I wanted to throw my hat in the ring. But fairy dragons are a very classic subject and there's only so many ways you can rehash a dragon with butterfly wings. ...So I made the dragon a bit more like an insect. Done with watercolor and prismacolor pencil, with a tiny bit of ink for linework and white gel pen for highlights. Also yes, that is my photo from my job. I managed to get a close up macro shot on my phone!

For Our Lord Sheogorath, without Whom all Thought would be linear and all Feeling would be fleeting - I have spent. Five. Months. on this art of what I can only call 'Sheogorath Phase 2'. Not continuously, because I was taking breaks to avoid going crazy, but you can see by the sheer amount of unique patterns and level of detail (all of which was done by hand, though I did copy my work over a couple times once I got the necessary bits of the wing line art done + simplified matters for the foreground/background butterflies) that this was a labor of love... and that I was going to go full in on my love of patchwork coats, given that I haven't made any Sixth Doctor art for a long time now. It took almost a month and a half to get just the rough design of the wings functional.

Butterflies referenced for the wings - Alpine Black Swallowtail, American Swallowtail, Monarch Butterfly, Spotted Fritillary, Scarlet Mormon Butterfly, Red Spotted Purple (which is more of a black + blue with a touch of orange), Cairns birdwing, Blue clipper, Painted beauty... and that's even before we get into the dragonflies/damsel flies that inspired the work on those parts of the wings, because I couldn't keep them all straight beyond the Blue Dazzler Damselfly.

This is coming months later, it got lost in the recesses of my drafts! I am so so so sorry, but of course! I adore Zeke, and we need to give Chris’s special someone a special butterfly! In response to this post!

For Zeke we need a butterfly with some green in it to pay homage to Chris’s favorite color, and we need a butterfly with some cool creature powers that Zeke could replicate in some of his chemistry filled endeavors! So, Zeke has the….

1)As caterpillars the females have chemical receptors in their legs and abdomens that allow them to locate the most delectable leaves, as they prefer leaves that are softer. So, like Zeke, this species has a knack for chemistry, having learned how to manipulate their own bodies to better ensure their survival, but the chemically inclined behavior of this species does not end here!

2) The Cairns Birdwing’s lifespan after emerging as a butterfly is very short, usually only around a month. Therefore they must find mates soon after emerging from their cocoons. The mating patterns of the species is particularly interesting. The males fight with rival males to find a female, but once the male has found the female of his choice, the female takes control of the relationship and uses chemical methods to ensure the sustainability of the partnership.

3) The mating process of this butterfly can take nearly two days to complete. While this process is occurring, the female releases a sedative that helps to control her mate’s behavior through the courtship process. Therefore, the chemical components that the female releases helps to ensure that she and her mate are able to produce another generation of Cairns Birdwing’s butterflies. Perhaps Zeke could utilize or replicate this technique to ensure the survival of other species!
