Sen. Bernie Sanders isn't waiting around for Medicare for All to happen. He wants to make some changes to the accessibility of U.S. medical care NOW. Who knew Bernie could be such a pragmatist?😉
Bernie is the chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. He is proud to announce that all 11 Democrats and 3 of the 10 Republicans on that committee have just approved a bill to go to the floor of the Senate. The bill is designed to recruit more medical professionals to work in underserved rural and urban communities, and will also greatly expand primary medical care for these populations.
The bill accomplishes this in three ways. First, the bill would provide more money for the National Health Service-Corps (NHSC), a program that provides scholarships and debt forgiveness for "primary care medical, dental, and behavioral health providers" in exchange for working a couple of years in underserved areas. (It's kind of like the premise behind the old TV show "Northern Exposure.")
Tumblr media
Second, Bernie says the bill would also "expand" the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) Program which would enable more medical professionals to do accredited residencies in "community health centers, rural health clinics, and tribal health centers" in underserved communities.
Third, Bernie said the bill would bolster affordable primary medical care, prescription drugs, dental care, and behavioral health care by increasing the funding for community health centers by 75% (over the course of three years).
Hopefully, when the bill comes before Congress, there will be enough bipartisan support to pass it. It is a good sign that 3 of the Republicans on Bernie's committee voted for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My apologies @saywhat-politics) for this total aside, but I couldn't resist the chance to combine my love of old TV shows with modern politics.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the TV series Northern Exposure (1990-1995), the plot revolves around Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), a New Yorker whose Columbia University Medical School degree was financed by the state of Alaska in exchange for four years of service. Joel discovers that he's expected to do his service to Alaska in the small town of Cicely--in the middle of nowhere. Thus starts Joel's fish-out-of-water adventure.
Of course, Joel grows to love the idiosyncratic folks who live in this village.
Let's hope that Bernie's proposed bill provides "Northern Exposure" type experiences for many more medical professionals.

This surprisingly cold weather in New Orleans may have you feeling like you’ve been relocated to a more Northerly climate. In 1992, cast members from the TV show Northern Exposure brought their chilly small-town charm to Loyola for a lecture and autographs. The pictures above depict actresses Armenia Miles and Elaine Miles with the trademark Roslyn’s Cafe sign. Alum, who do you remember visiting during your time at Loyola?

Notes on Northern Exposure, S01E01: “Pilot”
Hello and welcome to the first instalment of “Notes on Northern Exposure”, my episode-by-episode commentary covering the entirety of Northern Exposure (CBS, 1990-1995). Without further ado, let’s get started!
The series opens with Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) on board a plane to Alaska, dumping a lot of expository info on his new pal “Businessman” (John Aylward). We learn that Fleischman’s medical school bills were paid for by the state of Alaska and that, in return, he’s agreed to become their “indentured slave” for the next four years. In other words, the show has a built-in expiration date. Had it been a flop then this might, in retrospect, have seemed unduly optimistic. But the show went on to enjoy both critical acclaim and high ratings, running for six seasons and 110 episodes – providing me with enough material to keep this feature going for the next two years.
We’ll be seeing actor John Aylward again on the show, and in this same season, though not in the same role.
Joel arrives in Anchorage – Alaska’s largest city – only to be told that he’s not needed there. They have too many doctors. But before he can get too excited it’s made clear that the debt has not been cancelled. Instead, he’s expected to head out to Cicely, on the Alaskan Riviera.
What comes next is a lovely montage sequence set to the show’s theme that lets us bask in the stunning scenery of Alaska. That is, if any of the footage shown was of Alaska, as the series was actually filmed in Washington state.
The first Cicelian that Joel meets is Ed Chigliak (Darren E. Burrows). Towards the end of the episode we get our first indication of Ed’s love of cinema, after he gives Joel a pang of homesickness for his beloved New York City. Ed reveals that the source of his New York knowledge is Woody Allen’s Manhattan (1979): “I think Woody’s a genius!” I think Woody’s forever tainted by those sex abuse allegations, but those were two years away at this point. It’ll be interesting to see if Ed’s Woody fandom disappears or takes a backseat around that time. But given that, in 2017, actors are still falling over themselves to work with Allen, I’m not counting on it.
Joel meets up with former astronaut and town patriarch Maurice J. Minnifield (Barry Corbin). There’s some discomfort for Joel as Maurice mentions how excited he was to discover that Cicely “had a crack at a Jew doctor from New York City,” saying that “you boys do outstanding work.” This is the first indication we have of what, at this stage, we might charitably call Maurice’s lack of concern regarding political correctness.
Maurice goes on to introduce an essential piece of the series’ lore: “Cicely and Rosyln founded the town 97 years ago. Rumour and innuendo not withstanding, they were just good friends.” In time we’ll learn that rumour and innuendo were correct, and that Cicely and Roslyn were indeed lovers.
Regarding the painted mural outside Roslyn’s Café, Maurice says that “a hippy passing through painted that picture on the wall” but was so high on “the weed” that he forgot to include the apostrophe. In real life it was actually called the Roslyn Café, as the series was primarily filmed in Roslyn, Washington. The apostrophe was removed after production on the series ended.
At the doctor’s office, Marilyn (Elaine Miles) introduces herself by stepping out of the shadows and saying that she’s here for the receptionist job. This sends Joel running, and by “running” I mean “fleeing in terror”. Why? Was her sudden appearance that startling? Or is there an element of racism behind it?
Anyway, Marilyn persists, effectively giving herself the receptionist job that Joel says doesn’t exist (because he intends to leave town at the earliest opportunity). And she soon proves to be, if anything, overqualified for this job; she can stitch up wounds and has, as we’ll see in a later episode, a miracle cure for flu. Her professionalism in this episode is in sharp contrast to Joel, and I wonder if this is what irks him, as he turns up to work in a sweaty jogging outfit to whine about his situation. Also, he knows that she finds him ridiculous (“Please stop smiling at me. You’re constantly smiling at me.”). Joel is, in fact, an excellent doctor – but it takes Marilyn’s presence and professionalism to make him start acting like one.
After fleeing from Marilyn, Joel runs into the local bar, the Brick, and tries to renege on his contract in an angry phone call. He rants about Cicely being “the worst place on Earth,” and being stuck in a “godforsaken hole-in-the-wall pigsty with a bunch of dirty, psychotic rednecks.” Okay, so Joel is doing his level best to make himself loathsome. There’s nothing about Cicely, the Brick or its patrons to make these remarks seem remotely justified.
The Brick’s proprietor, Holling Vincoeur (John Cullum), provides Joel with a free meal and a surprisingly sympathetic ear, given Joel’s less than stellar review of Holling’s establishment. Holling explains to a curious Joel that his falling out with Maurice – until recently, his closest friend – was due to an argument over former “Miss Pacific Northwest” Shelly Marie Tambo (Cynthia Geary), who fell in love with Holling after Maurice brought her to Cicely with the intention of marrying her.
One problem that I have with this episode is that it doesn’t really treat Shelly as a character with agency. Sure, we’re told that she left Maurice and offered herself to Holling, but she doesn’t get to tell us that herself. That will soon change, but it’s still a pity that she doesn’t get a single line of spoken dialogue in this episode.
Whilst waiting for a phone call at the Brick, Joel is approached by Maggie O’Connell (Janine Turner). As Maggie attempts to introduce herself, Joel tells her that “the petulant aggressive thing is a real turn-off,” that he’s engaged to be married to “a real knockout,” and that she should take her “business somewhere else.” Joel’s sexism here – the way he automatically assumes Maggie must be coming on to him - stinks. Also, how do you look at Janine Turner and say those things? And then she drops the mic with: “I’m not a hooker, I’m your landlord.” Oy!
So what we have here is a classic example of the “will they / won’t they” TV trope. Once upon a time, this trope was everywhere you cared to look on network television. I think it’s fair to say that it’s no longer as common as it once was. The “battle of the sexes” mentality that informs it feels pretty archaic, but that could just be me. Perhaps romance in general just isn’t as prevalent on TV now as it was in the 90s? Conventional wisdom has it that a show dies when/if that “will they / won’t they” tension gets resolved, and keeping that tension going must be difficult if your show stands to run for several seasons. In real life, steamy romantic tensions don’t generally last 6-7 years, the average length of a US TV show. Keep it going too long and it’s at risk of seeming contrived. Then again, it can seem contrived right from the get-go, and that’s the case with Northern Exposure, as much as I enjoy this show. While the Fleischman/O’Connell relationship will evolve over time, I find it weird watching them launch into these slanging matches in the show’s early days. It’s as if they’ve been bickering since long before the show began.
Later on in the episode we cut to Maggie and Joel having a late-night drinking session in the Brick, where they appear to be the last customers. This scene exists to reveal more information about Maggie, but rather than have Maggie tell us herself the show treats us to yet another expository info-dump from a drunken Joel. Something else that made me cringe during this scene was Joel’s sudden acknowledgment of the obvious and indisputable beauty of Janine Turner on this show, which immediately tells you that this is the “will they?” scene.
And then we get the “DID they?!” scene, as Joel wakes up in a different bed in a different cabin. He finds one of Maggie’s shoes and assumes that fornication must have occurred. Things are moving fast for a 40-minute episode! But then Joel meets Maggie’s current beau, Rick Pederson (Grant Goodeve), and after an awkward exchange we learn that no fornication has occurred. This is one of the few times that we actually get to see Rick. Though Maggie and Joel are both in relationships, their respective partners are rarely seen and the relationships are never treated as the obstacles you’d think they’d be.
Joel is forced to mediate between Walter (Art LaFleur) and his wife Edna (Lois Foraker), who has tried shooting him and stabbing him with a swiss army knife and just doesn’t know what else to do to get his attention. Marilyn votes for divorce, and one of the first things you learn about Marilyn is that she is never wrong about anything. Still, we get to see Joel as marriage counsellor, and it’s another example of just how good his people skills can be.
The episode concludes with a large local gathering, the ninth Annual Arrowhead County Summer Wonderland Festival. It brings the series’ cast together in a grand display of the community spirit that will come to define the series.
It’s at the festival that we get our first few shots of Chris Stevens (John Corbett), Cicely’s local radio disc-jockey. It seems bizarre, in retrospect, that a character defined by his voice should be voiceless here. If you haven’t seen the show before, then you might think it odd that the camera keeps cutting to this as yet unknown character.
Holling has a quiet word with Maurice, and it’s worth singling out Corbin’s performance here as it is genuinely affecting. Maurice asks Holling what it’s like to be in love, the implication being that Maurice has never experienced “true” romantic love. A former astronaut, Maurice has staked his claim on Alaska, “the last frontier”, and been to space, “the final frontier”. But love represents a new frontier for Maurice and some of his best episodes are the ones that explore that theme. It’s significant then that Shelly, in this episode, is not presented to us as a person but as both an object (a trophy winner at risk of becoming a trophy bride) and a place (“Miss Pacific Northwest”). Maurice’s infatuation with Shelly in these early episodes has little to nothing to do with her as a person, and everything to do with whatever it is that she represents to him. Unexplored virgin territory perhaps, similar to the “new-found-land” of John Donne. That’s not to say that Shelly is a virgin, but a man like Maurice, old enough to be her (grand)father, is unlikely to split hairs. In other words we’re talking about lust, not love. But that’s all I have to say on the subject for now, as the show will return to it before long and, when it does, we’ll not only have a better idea of what Maurice thinks of Shelly, but Shelly will finally be able to share with us her side of the story.
Whether or not Joel intends it, he’s become a part of this community by the end of the episode. The moose burger might be an acquired taste, but it looks as if Joel will be able to not just reconcile himself to his new surroundings but even come to enjoy life in Cicely.

yooo it’s soso cool you live close enough to visit those falls!!
that’s the hotel/falls in Twin Peaks!!! :D i would love to go there
Haha yeah it’s super weird to be a local and watch Twin Peaks cause my brain is just like “Snoqualmie Falls” “Salish Lodge” “Twede’s Cafe” “Reinig Road” “Mount Si” “The Fall City Roadhouse”.
Same with Northern Exposure, some locations were filmed in my neck of the woods (some of the cabins) and my grandparents live near Roslyn so when I rewatched that recently it was strange!

ROSLYN
in which Roslyn stops trying.
WARNING: angst, fluff n everything in between!
thank you so much for 200 followers x enjoy 🥺
High school. Two words. Parents think teenagers are being dramatic when they say they don’t want to go to school, or it’s “prison”. High school is hell. Cheerleaders, bullies and jocks. Roslyn just stayed away. She was a pretty confident girl, she was the class “clown”. She didn’t have many friends, but she had acquaintes. It was tough going through high school with no real friends. Sure she knew everyone, but she didn’t have any friends. Which really she wasn’t too bothered about until home coming came around.
rejection. One word Roslyn was close with.
She had always liked Harry styles. I mean how could she not? He was music student. He was nice and smiled at her everyday in the hall. He helped her if she couldn’t answer a question. Always invited her to his party’s and gigs. And obviously Roslyn thought he liked her. Like she liked him. She was a very outgoing and confident person. So her being her, she decided to ask Harry to go to homecoming with her. She didn’t really like homecoming not because it was boring, but because she never had anyone to share the night with. She just didn’t want to be alone for once.
Her sister helped her with the poster. Which her sister, Sarah, was really proud of her for doing this, for even going to homecoming. Even though she was extroverted sometimes she found it hard to talk to people. She found it hard to trust and believe she was enough. So she hid all of her emotions. She pushed them deep down, and that got her no where. She had no friends and no one to dance with at homecoming. Even if Harry had one dance with she would be ok.
The day finally came when people were staring to ask people to homecoming. And by people she means boys. Roslyn was never one to be discouraged, so seeing none of the girls asking boys out pushed her a bit. She hoped Harry hadn’t asked anyone out yet. Of course he wouldn’t she thought. He likes you Roslyn. She felt crazy, but the signs were clear. Harry liked her. She finally saw Harry leaning beside his friends, Niall, locker. Niall immediately saw Roslyn with her poster and big smile. At first Niall was in shock as he had never seen her look genuinely happy. He nudged his friend, Harry, and smiled as he saw Harry groan.
“How many of these girls have asked you out today?” Niall asked stuffing his books in his bag. Harry shook his head banging his head against the locker and shrugged.
“Hi harry” Roslyn said with a teasing smile. “You can probably tell from my poster, but i was wonder-“ Roslyn was cut off by Harry “I’m sorry, i already have a date” Harry said and Roslyns smile fell of her face. She felt like she was going to cry. She could feel Nialls stare on her flushed face. She was not going to cry. She was not going to cry. “Oh, cool. Y-yeah of course” she stuttered “it was stupid anyway” she said crumpling up the poster and throwing it at Harry. “Enjoy your homecoming” she said walking away.
“You’re not going?” Harry asked with a frown. He felt really bad lying about having a date. He didn’t even like these dances. He just felt bad saying no without a reason. Which I guess would be worse in the long run, if she found out he didn’t actually have a date. “Not anymore” she mumbled before walking off.
Sarah comforted her with her favourite rom com movies and lots and lots of candy. “Maybe i should ask him out to a movie?” Roslyn asked sticking a bar of chocolate into her mouth. Sarah sighed, not having the heart to tell Roslyn he clearing wasn’t interested. Roslyn nodded to herself. “I’ll ask him in class tomorrow”
Tomorrow became today and Roslyn was ecstatic. She had walked to class with Niall and told him her plan. “Roslyn-“ he tried to stop her but was too late, Roslyn already was beside Harry.
“Harry! i was wondering if you wanted to go see a movie with me theres this new cool movie out and-“ Roslyn was once again cut off by Harry.
“I’m sorry. I have this thing on this weekend” he said not looking sorry at all. Roslyn sighed nodding. “Well you have my number! Text me” she said walking back to Niall. “He said he was busy” Roslyn said pouting. Niall sighed and looked apologetic as he knew Harry had nothing on this weekend.
“Hey! Why don’t we go out?” Niall said and Roslyn looked up smiling “really? You’d go with me?” She asked and he nodded grinning. “Of course! You’re funny and cute! Who wouldn’t go out with you” he said and she blushed before pouting again “harry”
Soon the weekend came and she had the best time with Niall. She was lucky to call him her friend. She was so happy she didn’t just waste away the weekend.
On Monday she walked in with flowers in her hand. She spotted Niall and Harry together on a bench. Niall immediately waved her over with a confused look because of the flowers. She had asked Harry out again on Sunday. But of course he had said no. So now she was after Niall. Harry didn’t want her, Harry didn’t like her. But Niall did. So she was going to treat her friend. She didn’t have a crush on Niall. She just wanted him to know how grateful she was. Call it dramatic or clingy but she didn’t want to lose him.
“Let me guess. You want to go out with me” Harry asked closing his eyes. “No. I was going to ask Niall out” she smiled and Harry opened his eyes. “These are for you m’lady” she said kneeling down. Niall laughed pulling her into a hug. “You can come if you want Harry! But you’re always so busy” Roslyn said pouting.
“I’m actually free after school” Harry said quickly. Niall sighed shaking his head. “Let me walk you to class” Niall said wrapping an arm around Roslyn. “I’ll come with” Harry said running after them.
School ended and they all made their way to the cafe Roslyn recommended. She always came here on a Monday. And she could get there really easily too (she didn’t like exercise) so it was only a 5 minute walk away from the school, otherwise she wouldn’t walk. She’s always been like that. She’s doesn’t understand how she hasn’t gotten ill yet. She barely exercises and eats junk food everyday. She’s not complaining though. They all stopped outside the cafe. It was a retro cafe and they had really good hot chocolates. And they played a lot of music she would be into.
“My sister and i found this place” Roslyn said “i was going to bring Harry here yesterday - but he was busy” she said and grabbed nialls arm. “Come on let’s get some seats”
After finding seats and ordering they all fell into a comfortable silence. Roslyn looking out the window. Harry looking at Roslyn and Niall colouring in the menu. Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac came on and roslyns smile lit up the room.
“This is my favourite song!” Harry and Roslyn said at the same time. Roslyn smiled as Harry blushed. “So hows your date for homecoming?” Roslyn asked Harry leaning across the table. “Is she cute? Or he!?” She asked and Harry sighed “i- i dont have a date” he stuttered.
“Oh” Roslyn said clearing her throat. “I asked you and you said no?” She said clearly confused. “It’s just-“ he began and Roslyn shook her head “you could’ve just told me you didn’t want to go with me. I’m used to it Harry” she muttered looking down at her phone.
“Hey Niall I have to go” she said smiling at him. “What we just got here” he whined. “I know my sister needs help with something” she said hugging him when she was out of the booth not bothering to say goodbye to Harry who clearly waiting for one.
“I’ll see you tomorrow niall”
“Bye Roslyn” Harry said and she sighed walking off. Harry groaned banging his head on the table. How was he going to win her back?
Harry came into school the next day with flowers. He waited by her locker. He immediately smiled when he saw her.
“Roslyn! I got these for you!” He exclaimed and she smiled “that’s nice of you Harry” she said patting his shoulder before opening her locker.
“I was wondering if you wanted to see a movie tomorrow?” He asked messing with the bottom of his shirt. “I’m sorry! I’m really busy helping my sister re decorate her apartment” Roslyn said with a pout “maybe another time” she said squeezing his arm.
This went on for two weeks. Roslyn completely ignoring Harry. Saying no to his plans and not smiling at him in the halls. Harry finally understood how she must of felt. It was no excuse but he was just scared. He’s liked Roslyn for awhile. But he panicked. And now he was going to make it up to her. By singing.
He set up his equipment with his band in the cafeteria at lunch. He knew she ate here. He’d always see her making someone laugh, or talking with the lunch ladies. He had told Niall the plan to which he was fully on board with.
Soon enough the bell rang and the music started. He started singing one of her favourite songs (Niall told him) darling by Christian leave. Niall had grabbed her arm the minute he heard Harry and the band start. He had to hurry as he was needed for the chorus of the song. “Please tell me that’s not harry” Roslyn said trying not to smile.
She walked into the cafeteria Niall running up to Harry grabbing his guitar. Harry looked at her as he sang “darling I’m in love”. Roslyn giggled walking closer to him. “I know who I want to be now. Just your man” he sang as Roslyn danced around with a couple of other girls.
The song ended and he walked up to Roslyn with the poster she made him.
“Homecoming?”
