So most people know Patroclus as Achilles' "good friend". That IS true, but what's interesting is that their childhood acquaintance began when Patroclus had to flee his home because... he killed his companion in a rage because he lost a game of dice. Oh boy, chill. Ah, he fled to the palace of Peleus who was the king of Phthia and father of his future "FRIEND". Yeah, that's cacon, they were friends, but I think we all agree that the internet thinks otherwise, right? Sad thing, poor boy died in the Trojan War mainly because he fought in Achilles's armor and was mistaken for him, but Herctor learned the words of revenge very quickly. Nice thing, there are versions that the internet tells - Patroclus was very well-liked. Because not only was his body protected and taken for a proper burial but also his army friends burned his body on a pile with locks of their hair.. Generally, hair cut was associated with death (Thanatos and stuff, you know) but this shows the respect they gave him. Like, I even found a mention on Wiki that his ashes were mixed with Achilles' ashes and buried together, I don't want to believe anything else. Gay love since antiquity, forever.

It's so obvious how much Kaiser misses you. Every little thing reminds him of you, even though he keeps denying it. As much as it bothered him at home, he now misses how you'd constantly knock at his door whenever you got bored and how you'd always steal at least half of his food just to be annoying. Your brother tries to now show his sadness, but especially Ness notices that Kaiser often feels down, especially in situations that remind him of you. Ness has tried to get Kaiser to admit it, but he always gets very defensive as soon as you are mentioned. "What am I supposed to miss about them?" is your brother's usual response whenever Ness or any other of Kaiser's teammates asks about you. Isagi has quickly noticed that there's something going on, so he likes to ask Kaiser questions about you over and over.

Karasu didn't expect to miss you at all. In fact, he was a little relieved to get a break from you. But then he realized how boring everything is when you're not there to be as annoying as possible. And most importantly, he has no one he can bully back now. You always were his main victim and now that you're not around, Karasu just feels incomplete. He often tells the other Blue Lock players about you, but most of the time he's "ranting" about the annoying things you would always do. Although, the more obvious it gets how he's missing you and all your annoying traits, and how he's only talking about you so missing you doesn't hurt as much.

for the director's commentary ask - what's something neat about Where the Sky Meets the Sea that you wanna talk about?

Hmm... what to talk about...what to talk about...

Here's something let's see where this goes:

Back when the fic was still in its planning stages, I wasn't super sure if I wanted Nya to reciprocate Jay's romantic interest.

My initial instinct was to keep their relationship platonic (which I did ultimately go with), but I hesitated, wondering if I had some biases that kept me from exploring an interesting story option.

Because there is something there about Nya wanting to be in a relationship, but denying her desire because she knows that'll further encourage the public to define her by her gender, something that's already been made clear to be a massive problem for her this season.

While it'd be a neat (and basically cacon) concept to dig into, considering society's general struggle with amatonormativity and rape culture (I know that feels like a heavy word for a lego show, but Jay does canonically spend the season continuing to pursue Nya after ahe says 'no' without facing any consequences, and is in fact ultimately rewarded with the relationship he wanted, which...definitely isn't encouraging feminist thoughts in kids), I ultimately just couldn't end a story where someone says 'no' to a romantic relationship with her getting into that romantic relationship anyway in good conscience.

You may have noticed that the ending to Where the Sky Meets the Sea is in fact very anathema to the idea of obligatory romance. I love how the ending turned out, and I love the idea of the events of Skybound bringing Jay and Nya closer together, but very clearly not in a romantic way, and the characters end up better and happier for it. I love the message Jay growing out of needing romantic validation and learning to check himself sends to the audience. I love how that narrative validates Nya's choices and struggles, something both the Ninjago show and fandom often fail to do.

And I'm not the only one who liked the ending. I've gotten some great comments from people talking about how much they REALLY liked the ending (some of them are even from Jaya shippers, which is super flattering), and it's really awesome to see a platonic version of the main Ninjago ship enjoyed by my audience as much as I enjoyed it.

Bonus fun fact: When I was writing the scene where Jay and Nya rowed up to the lighthouse, this fanart by @penofwildfire was a major inspiration:

I think it's straight-up replaced the actual scene from the show in my brain. It really captures the bleak hopelessness of their situation so well. The show uses a similar colour palette, but the dialogue kind of kills that mood. That scene works so much better in silence.
