“So after a night at the Moulin Rouge on Friday, yesterday we were fortunate enough to have two of the hottest tickets in town. Cabaret the musical starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Buckley.

“Wow what an incredible experience. From the moment you step into the theatre and a sticker is put over your phone camera you are transported back to the kit Kat club in the 1930s. I don’t want to give any spoilers but if you have tickets you are in for a treat. So much happens before you even go in to watch the show. A truly immersive experience. Eddie Redmayne is outstanding. We were also lucky enough to bump into him outside the theatre. What a nice guy stopping to give a few autographs. "Cabaret" show #567

The show is beautiful; the cast is beautiful; the set is beautiful; even the orchestra is beautiful! The Roundabout Theatre Company’s tour of Kander and Ebb’s musical, Cabaret, is hitting landmarks all across this nation; in a time of current political drama this play is more relevant than audiences may think. BT McNicholl’s direction of this revival production has kept true to the in-your-face concept Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall originally conceived when they revived the play in 1998, maintaining this Cabaret as a powerful, sexy, fantastic drama.

Randy Harrison is a diversely talented EmCee, excelling in his vocal, dance, and acting contributions as the show’s host. His leadership of the opening number, “Willkommen” does not disappoint, which sets up brilliant turns in “Two Ladies,” “Money,” and “I Don’t Care Much.” McNicholl has directed Harrison in a way that allows the audience to make up their minds as to who and what the EmCee represents, rather than solidifying his definition as a character. Andrea Gross delivers a strong performance as Sally Bowles. Her sensuality is consistently intoxicating and drives her stirring performance of “Maybe This Time” and “Cabaret.” Playing opposite Gross is a compelling Lee Aaron Rosen as the play’s sole American male, Cliff. Rosen’s transition from earnest writer looking for material for his new novel to experienced veteran of Germany’s brutality and sexuality in 1929-1930 is heartbreakingly powerful. Rosen never misses a beat of intensity or tenderness when acting opposite Gross, making their relationship an electric connection to see develop.

Shannon Cochran and Mark Nelson are impeccable in their performances as Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz. Their magnificent chemistry as the play’s elderly couple hits moments of absolute beauty, namely the pair’s adorable performance of “It Couldn’t Please Me More,” and in Cochran’s powerful “What Would You Do?” Alison Ewing and Ned Noyes are fantastic featured members of the principal cast; Ewing hits every sultry punch line as Fraulein Kost, and Noyes delivers every despicable line with gusto as Ernst Ludwig. Ewing and Noyes combine for a solid turn in the Act One finale, “Tomorrow Belongs to Me” with wonderful vocals and rambunctious charisma.

The Kit Kat Klub features an ensemble of ladies and gentlemen, both which are absolutely solid in dance and song. The opening number is a sterling display of Marshall’s choreography and Kander and Ebb’s award-winning score. All play long, Marshall’s choreography is performed with alluring precision and stunning sexuality within Robert Brill’s stellar set and under the energized lighting design of Peggy Eisenhauer and Mike Baldassari. Cabaret will continue its journey across the country, so be sure to check it out if it comes to a city near you; just don’t forget to leave your troubles outside.
