Okay, it's kinda late for me to be awake and mentally functioning, but i just got a 10/10 best good idea. So, with my teeth project going so well and making the teeth bigger (and hopefully at least a bit stronger), i just got thinking about the effect of using an excess of calcium or an excess of phosphorus. I'm actually still not sure what effect those changes would have at all except maybe promoting different calcium phosphates (eg. Ca3(PO4)2 vs Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) though those phases are mostly controlled by pH (i think, but i'm not really thinking well right now). But anyway, so, if you remember superfest glass as was made in east germany (the glass that was so hard that it broke your floor before it broke), you should know that the way it achieved that very high hardness was through ion exchange. They formed the glass into shape as pretty normal glass with a fair amount of sodium in it (as is normal) but then they sprayed the glass with a fair amount of molten potassium chloride (iirc) which can allow a potassium ion to swap in for a sodium ion which ends up putting a ton of stress on the outside of the glass in such a way that it makes the material very resistant to breaking. That was probably explained very badly. Anyway, so, what if you did a similar thing with the teeth? Like, i know that amorphous silica with alkali ions isn't exactly the same as teeth which are formed of a ton of perfectly askew very tiny crystals of calcium phosphate, but still. While it may not actually be the same principle in this case, bones with a higher amount of strontium replacing calcium have been noted to have significantly higher strength, which at least to me indicates that it may be due to causing these beneficial internal stresses. All this to say that while i think it may be a decent idea, strontium is expensive, there's very very few ions that i could replace the phosphate with (maybe sulphate? i can't find good info on the ionic radii of either PO4 or SO4) so unless i swap a calcium with 2 Na+ or K+, all my remaining options are either organic nightmares or extraordinarily toxic (and probably radioactive too!). Right before i went to post this i thought maybe swapping out the calcium for a smaller ion might also do the trick? IDK if that's true. Probably not, there's probably something about how it impacts the forces or something, but maybe. And if replacing the ions with smaller ones helps, then i vote for iron because it's super cheap and small and pretty safe

Festival Cine de La Habana, dos décadas como ventana cultural en Nueva York

Nueva York, 9 abr (EFEUSA).- El Festival de Cine de La Habana en Nueva York, que arrancó esta noche su vigésima edición con la asistencia de directores, actores y productores, se ha establecido como una ventana para la riqueza cultural, tradiciones y diversidad de Cuba y de Latinoamérica en Estados Unidos. El evento, que se desarrollará del 9 al 16 de abril con más de 35 filmes, la mitad de ellos dirigidos por mujeres, comenzó con el largometraje "El viaje extraordinario de Celeste García", que marcó el debut como director del cubano Arturo Infante, quien estuvo ausente. El festival presentará películas de Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, República Dominicana, México, Perú y España, muchas de ellas en estreno internacional o en EE.UU y vienen de ganar premios en otros festivales, de acuerdo con los organizadores El festival rinde tributo cada año al legado de importantes directores y en su veinte aniversario se reconocerá a Fernando Pérez, uno de los cineastas más respetados de Cuba, con la presentación de algunos de sus trabajos mas emblemáticos como "Suite Habana" (2003) y "Clandestinos" (1988), así como su filme más reciente, "Insumisas" (2018). Durante dos décadas este evento cultural ha cumplido con la meta "de abrir caminos" y de que la gente "abra su mente y sus ideas a otras ideas y lo que otros piensan. Ha sido lo más vital", dijo a Efe Diana Vargas, su directora artística. Destacó que no se trata sólo de un festival cultural cubano, sino también latinoamericano y de latinos en EE.UU., donde los directores han podido contar las diversas ideas de pensamiento y la idiosincrasia que identifica a cada país, "y eso es lo importante". "Es importante que haya ese intercambio de ideas desde la perspectiva de la gente que vive esos procesos", afirmó. Sin embargo, el festival nunca ha estado exento de las tensiones diplomáticas entre EE.UU. y Cuba, y este año no es la excepción ya que se ha visto afectado por el cierre de la oficina de visados de la embajada estadounidense en La Habana dictada por el Gobierno de Donald Trump. Para obtener el permiso de entrada a EE.UU., los cubanos deben hacer los trámites en un tercer país, lo que causó que varios invitados no hayan podido asistir al festival de cine, incluido Pérez, a quien se rinde tributo. "Es costoso tener que ir a otro país a solicitar la visa (de entrada a EE.UU.) y no hay garantías que se las den", afirmó Vargas, que reconoció que esta edición ha sido la más afectada por las relaciones políticas entre los dos países, de las que el festival trata de mantenerse al margen. "Hemos mantenido también la posición de no meternos en cuestiones políticas, sino que creemos en la cultura y el arte como la manera de crear puentes y hacer que la gente realmente entienda al otro y sus procesos a través de historias", afirmó. Por su parte el conocido actor cubano de cine, televisión y teatro afincado en España Héctor Noas ("Cuéntame cómo pasó", "Hospital Central", "El comisario"), destacó a Efe la importancia de que exista este festival, que muestra el trabajo que se realiza en su país, a la vez que lamentó que esta nueva política del Gobierno de EE.UU. esté afectando a sus compañeros. "Es importante que este festival se mantenga, son veinte años de amistad con el cine cubano. Estuve hace diez años con una película y estoy este año en tres filmes que se presentan", entre ellos el que dirige Pérez, cuya ausencia calificó de "muy triste". "Esta Administración (Trump) ha endurecido mucho lo de las visas, los cubanos tienen que ir a un tercer país para solicitarla, les exigen una inversión de dinero y documentos y luego llegan ahí y no se la dan", indicó. Explicó que Pérez decidió no hacer la gestión "porque tenía poco tiempo y lo más probable es que no la obtuviera". Esta edición también conmemora los 500 años de la fundación de La Habana con una retrospectiva de algunos de los cineastas más conocidos de Cuba, y el programa incluye el restaurado filme "Memorias del subdesarrollo" (1968), que dirigió Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, basada en la novela homónima de Edmundo Desnoes. Vargas destacó además que este año contarán con el reconocido bailarín y coreógrafo cubano Carlos Acosta para la presentación del documental sobre su vida "Yuli", dirigida por la española Iciar Bollaín y basado en su libro "No mires atrás". Acosta llegó a ser el primer bailarín del Royal Ballet de Londres y en enero del próximo año asumirá la dirección del Birmingham Royal Ballet.
