Shangri-La Frontier Episode 1: What Do You Play Games For?
What happens when a gamer who only plays shitty games decides to pick up a so called god-tier game? Shangri-La Frontier is the answer to that and provides an insane opening episode for the concept. I'm just so excited to get 2 whole cours of this, and I really want to explain why.
Also, SiM's vocalist (MAH) on the OP with FZMZ? And Chico on the ending song? This series was made for me man.
First of all, C2C is an incredibly underrated studio considering the quality of the projects that they enjoy. This is one such project. Right from the start the quality is insane. 2D camera movement, detailed animation and character acting, the whole nine yards. Just look at this walking cycle! There's no 3D and their shoulders move!
It's just crazy to see the detail they put into these pieces early on. Walking cycles are super neglected due to how "plain" they are, but there's just something incredible about seeing that effort put into it with stuff like these examples.
And then there's this (sort of misleading) litmus test. Does your anime have really good art for a random cut? Odds are the production's doing really well. And, well, there's this really good looking beetle shown early on in the episode.
Anyways, to Shangri-La Frontier the game. The direction understands the assignment right away. This is a video game, we need to know it's a video game. So they show us it's a video game. First person perspective is our very first cut shown in the welcome screen and once we enter the world, setting the tone perfectly for what's to come.
But of course, a video game has more to it then just first person perspective, and of course C2C grasp that as well. Slow motion (which you'll see later), and more importantly camera movement are important in establishing that feel. The slow draw towards an endless expanse of world, the bird's eye view of a landmark or feature as the camera slowly rotates. It gets it, and it's able to create a living, breathing trailer for Shangri-La during the episode because of that.
And then, there's the fact that it's a video game. There's talks of skills and abilities and levels and whatnot, but I think most understand that that's a "staple" and that C2C/Shangri-La handle it quite well.
Let's talk about the good stuff, let's talk about action. C2C nails it. They put incredible effort into video game-styled choreography, and it pays off in spades. The slow motion, the harsh camera angles to accentuate the fight, the camera rotation, the way that attacks linger in the air. It's incredible stuff that's augmented by insane animation and visual effects. Seriously, pay attention to the fight and you'll see that they did an impact frame for a crit. Not in the traditional sense, but that the impact frame was the crit. This sort of stuff just makes me so excited because of how well it's handled.
And then there's the worldbuilding. The OP comes into play as well of course, but the details are super great. The enemies Sunraku faces in the starting forest are (mostly) beginner enemies. A goblin with a stone axe and some sort of large pig seem to be the "typical", but there's more to it than that. The Vorpal bunny is a "rare" enemy which makes sense, but the pig enemy only appears as Sunraku ventures closer to the second town rather than the first.
There's considerable detail and effort placed in the creation and appearances of these creatures in the world. The Vorpal Bunny featuring a better crafted weapon than the others that most likely came from somewhere else. Don't forget - we saw a rabbit in the opening.
It's just insanely cool stuff. The world is already shown to be more broad and deep than "it's a big video game world!". There's all sorts of little pieces like this peppered about, and it's just so damn good. Even the concept of Sunraku's "Wanderer" dropping him in a forest rather than the starter town. The detail to really sell this game as god-tier is so damn good.
But it's important to not forget, the god-tier part of the game is only one part of the puzzle. Sunraku here is famous for playing garbage games.
And it's a great way to offset the story and provide a fun angle, I'm serious. It allows them to add fun commentary and responses in regards to frustration from playing bad games, and at the same time provide a novel and excitable approach to a genuinely good game. The best of both worlds that sets the perfect stage for how they want to explore this story.
So, understandably so, I'm very excited about two cours of this and everybody else should be too. C2C is showing us they've got the potential to make the absolute most of Shangri-La Frontier and it's fun and surprisingly unique concept. Can't wait to see what they bring with the next episode!

TIME of the SEASON Fall 2024 Edition: The Sequel Seasons
SEQUEL SEASONS ONCE AGAIN!
Welp, we’re down to some shows that are just the sequel seasons and good thing I waited until today to cover them. Looks like this season isn’t as much as prior seasons were. Again, that might be a good thing since it means I’m not swamped by a bunch of shows I might not give full attention to. (Yes, that’s bound to happen.) However, there are a couple of shows that I’m just going to wait for the…

Watching episode 10 of Shangri-la Frontier and...
I wonder how long it's going to take for the studio to be sued by Nintendo bc those are just straight up the Japanese box arts for Splatoon 2, SM3DW + BF, and TLOZ: TOTK, in addition to Taiko & GOW
There are more but those were the only ones I recognized
Taking a closer look and again straight up just the JP box art for 3d world switch
Now there are slight color differences, but that is very likely just pixel compression and stuff

One of the most remarkable, complex and ingenious sets ever designed for a motion picture is that of the gigantic' factory-starship“Nostromo,” in the new Twentieth Century-Fox space suspense-thriller ALIEN.
The script called for a well-used, slightly battered starship which towed through space a series of three vast oil refineries— rather like a huge intergalactic articulated truck— the whole supposedly 1 Yg kilometers long and weighing an awesome 200 million tons.
The Nostromo has three levels or decks and the designers first toyed with the notion of building a huge threestory set, but it was decided that this would prove impractical for filming purposes. So the "A” (or top) level was constructed first, filling much of the giant "C” sound stage at Shepperton Studios.

Shangri-La is one of my Favorite Anime Shows in the Last Few Years.
I'm a gaming nerd at heart and this show oozes such a specific vibe.
Our Main Character: Rakuro Hizatome is a fan of playing and beating trash VR games, but is tempted one day by the newest and most popular MMO: Shangri-La Frontier. Armed with his knowledge and skill of bad games, can he succeed in a god tier video game title? And the answer is: yes. yes he can.
I mentioned the specific vibe at the top of this and here's the thing. There's been plenty of VR game anime over the years, but what really sets this one apart is the writing. Rakuro or rather "Sunraku" (His username in-game) is clearly written to be a mix of classic shonen youthful determination, tempered by the knowledge and skill of a veteran gamer. At no point does his personality veer towards the more annoying shonen stereotypes, or veer towards what I would call the "Kiriko from SAO" edgy knowitall. Sunraku is by no means a one note character. He doesn't look or act like a cartoon nerd stereotype at all, far from it. The author (this was a webcomic and then adapted to manga) and subsequent anime scriptwriter clearly either did their research or are very into the gaming scene. Sunraku talks about glitches, bugs, exploiting game mechanics, social gaming aspects, and all manner of other stuff over the 25 episode run. There is also very few specific gaming references in the show either. You're not seeing Mario or Zelda popping in, but you will see pixel art, inventory screens, and other classic gaming tropes. Sunraku is very playfully written. Initially, he's alone in his adventure, and you get a lot of his thoughts about a given situation. And while you get all of that standard anime teenage boy determination, you also get some of the best sarcastic comedic lines you'll ever hear in anime. He's also occasionally punny, and later on when he meets friends from previous games, downright catty during situations. The animation also keeps up with these situations, as you'll see Sunraku and his standard bird mask (Yeah that's not his head don't worry) be twisted and curved about to suit the comedy of the moment.
Speaking about the animation, it's good! At very few points do I ever catch myself looking at a specific shot and thinking that the animation feels stiff or slow. The staff at Studio C2C clearly knew where to allocate the appropriate amount of frames to a given situation. I don't feel like this show ever made my jaw drop with the animation either, but there's nothing to complain about. The cinematography is what really sells this show for me. It's not overly stylistic, but the studio certainly knew how to play up moments with these characters with good posing and fun use of lighting. The direction truly is the highlight of this show.
The initial few episodes where Sunraku is by himself are fun and it does really hammer down that he understands quite alot about gaming stuff and knows how to apply it. That's really the foundation of this shows writing, but my favorite parts are when he meets other players. This is an MMO after all, eventually you'll have to interact with another player, and even the first encounter with two throwaway characters is entertaining and fun. But when he reunites with two friends, Oikatsu and Arthur Pencilgon (yes those are their usernames) is when the writing really pops. You now have three smart mouth gaming nerds all constantly poking fun at eachother, each from different gaming backgrounds. It really helps break up the more serious action sections. What really struck me though is that other shows would have kept the group together, but after the group's goal is completed, the writer lets them each do their own thing. It feels very realistic in that sense, as MMOs these days don't generally require you to do EVERYTHING with a group. It really shows that the author did their research.
Shangri-la Frontier also doesn't ignore the "IRL" sections of a gamers life either. We meet Rakuros family, who each have their own quirky hobbies, such as moms obsession with having bugs as pets, and his dads love of fishing. It's all shown somewhat briefly, but its enough to understand that the family is each quirky in their own way and while a tiny bit dysfunctional, they all care about eachother. Recurring Characters Oikatsu and Pencilgon also have glimpses of their lives too. That being said, while the anime does a good job with these sections, I wouldn't be surprised if the webcomic had more to the IRL parts, but the anime had to cut it for time constraints.
I initially watched this show in Japanese, but tried the English dub and was absolutely charmed. Comedy always hits stronger in a language you understand, but I can tell that the English scriptwriters really put a lot of thought into this show. I didn't watch both versions, nor do I speak Japanese, so I can't tell you definitively if the English dub moves away from the original Japanese writing. What I can tell you is the performances were fantastic. My favorite has to be Eric Vale as Sunraku, who really put his all into this character. He hits the serious moments as perfectly as the catty, sarcastic sections, and is probably the reason I vibe so hard with Sunraku as a character.
Shangri-La Frontier should be out completely by now in sub and dub forms, please watch it!

Otaku Elf Review
Otaku Elf, also known as Edomae Erufu, is a fantasy comedy anime. It is based on a seven-volume manga illustrated and written by Akihiko Higuchi. Directed by Takebumi Anzai, it is produced by C2C, a studio founded in April 2006. This post will have spoilers.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the thirty-fourth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on June 5, 2023.
This series focuses on a sixteen-year-old named Koito Koganei (voiced by Yuka Ozaki). She becomes a shrine maiden, known as miko, at a shrine in Takamini after the death of her grandfather. As a result, she becomes the caretaker of Eldarie "Elda" Irma Fanomene (voiced by Ami Koshimizu). Elda is an immortal and beautiful elf summoned from another world. Koito encounters challenges as Elda is an otaku and hikikomori/shut-in who fears going outside the shrine following an unpleasant interaction many years prior. Even so, she attempts to get Elda to enjoy life outside the shrine.
Originally, I had not been planning to write a review of this series because I'm already reviewing nine other series this season, either about magical girls (Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure and Tokyo Mew Mew New), legendary warriors (Unicorn Warriors: Eternal), VTubers (Kizuna no Allele), a yuri-themed cafe (Yuri Is My Job!), golf girls (Birdie Wing), idols (Oshi No Ko), or other subjects (Alice Gear Aegis Expansion and Skip and Loafer). One motivation for writing this review was because of Sailor Moon, which I'm currently watching, for the first time. It features Rei Hino as a shrine maiden, when she isn't Sailor Mars.
The animation style, comedy of an immortal elf being an otaku meeting a normal person, and the centrality of food, drew me in. The latter is primarily grounded in the cooking by Koyuzu (voiced by Hitomi Sekine), the younger sister of Koito. The same can be said for Koito and Elda's stories often becoming intertwined. Also, there are characters which are portrayed as "cute", like Koito's friend Koma Sakuraba (voiced by Haruka Aikawa).
I liked that every episode of Otaku Elf has some story about past Japanese culture, especially from the Edo period. Of course, Elda does all she can to impress Koito no matter what. This is despite the fact that although she has a laptop, she doesn't know how to use a cell phone. When she does use it, she texts so much that she angers the spirits! Elda does not know everything, however, and doesn't pretend she is all-knowing. She is wise, but not omniscient.
Yordeilla "Yord" Lila Fenomenea (voiced by Rie Kugimiya) and Himawari Kohinata (voiced by Teru Ikuta) are a good addition to the series. Yord is a dark-skinned elf, who is bad at directions, and has an absurd rivalry with Elda over an equivalent of tic-tac-toe. Dr. Akane Sasaki (voiced by Yumi Uchiyama) was similarly a positive character. In fact, she is shown in the seventh episode with Kadoi, getting drunk at a bar, with both of them as an interesting pair of characters together.
There is undeniable yuri subtext in this series, specifically between Koito and Elda, especially shown in the fifth episode. Otaku Elf has a degree of intimacy it can turn to and expand in each episode. As such, the series centers on the importance of spending time with others above everything else. In that way, Otaku Elf is special.
In marked contrast to Birdie Wing, the value of studying, and education as an extension, is emphasized through Koito's intense studying in the sixth episode. The importance of taking breaks and not over-extending oneself is an interrelated theme.
youtube
I like the slice-of-life nature of Otaku Elf. This makes it different from magic-themed series such as Healer Girl and Management of a Novice Alchemist. Similarly, it is nothing like recent slice-of-life anime. The latter includes Let's Make a Mug Too, The Aquatope on White Sand, Teasing Master Takagi-san, and Laid-Back Camp.
The series differs from YuruYuri, Gabriel DropOut, Is the Order a Rabbit?, Kin-iro Mosaic, Non Non Biyori, K-On!, and Azumanga Daioh, in the same genre. Elda is a living history resource, who is good at origami, but can have awful nightmares. There's occasional casual alcoholism. But, it isn't as present as it is in Bocchi the Rock!. The latter features a sick bassist named Kikuri Hiroi, who spends most of her money on booze.
The seventh Otaku Elf episode was one of the best in the entire series. It primarily focused on Koyuzu and her desire to spend more time with her sister, Koito. Some of the funniest sequences in the episode was when she charmed people in a wholesale market so she could get fish for free.
The latter episode was only rivaled by the eighth episode. It focuses on Elda meeting another elf, named Haira (voiced by Mamiko Noto). Some of the best parts were having the historical remembrance shown in anime style resembling wood block art. The episode features another miko, named Komari, the same age as Koito. Haira is an elf with beauty only matched by Elda. She is older than Elda and Yolde, treating them as her younger sisters. The episode implied Elda is a lesbian, as she said she liked all the teahouse girls during the Edo period.
By the end of the episode, it is clear that the series is uncritical of the fact that Komari was a social influencer and that Haira was a gambler. Even though Komari was critical of Haira for gambling, she tells Koioto that if Haira is doing what she likes, it is ok. On the one hand, this makes sense as Komari had been with Haira since she was young, allowing her to take candid photographs.
On the other, Otaku Elf, by saying that Haira's desire to be a gambler is ok, implies it is a non-issue and downplays it as a problem. Most gambling is prohibited in Japan. There are exceptions for some motor sports and horse racing. The latter is something that Haira said she wanted to do during the episode.
There is an ample culture of gambling in the island nation. The island has a difficult relationship with it. There is inconsistency between reality and law. Some have pushed to completely legalize gambling across the island. Even so, some people, and groups, have objected to expanded gambling in Osaka. They have argued that crime and addiction (to gambling) will rise as a result. Those caught gambling illegally in Japan can face fines or jail time. This hasn't stopped gambling from becoming pervasive, nor the millions afflicted with gambling addiction. The series could have done a better job with this topic.
Despite the problematic approach to gambling, the series often highlights the importance of remembering the past and preserving it. In the ninth episode, Elda reads a manga that has been published for over 30 years. She reorganizes her room due to a ceiling leak (with the help of Koito) and finds an old videotape. Often series only focus on new technology. They act like anything deemed "analog" isn't worth bringing up. In some cases, there is a blend of the "old" and "new". In the case in Steven Universe, a videotape of the protagonist's mother (Rose Quartz) plays an important role in the series.
Similarly in Otaku Elf, Koito sees a videotape for the first time, and goes to her grandmother, who has an old Betamax player, excited to watch a tape of something recorded from before she was born. She learns that her mother, shown on the tape, was also a miko of Elda as well! In a typical scene, Elda embarrasses Koito. She thinks she will be picked up in a "bridal style" pose and runs away as a result. The latter is part of the ongoing yuri undertones of this series, even though Elda and Koito have more of a master-student relationship than anything that is romantic.
youtube
Otaku Elf is much more than a series with endearing character dynamics. It has a protagonist (Elda) who deeply cares about the town she lives in, a neighborhood of Tokyo, I believe. Unlike some other anime this season, such as Alice Gear Aegis Expansion, there's no fan service. Nor are there any characters which are "one-off jokes". In fact, the series, in some ways, counts as an isekai. It has a "genuineness and pleasantness" which evades many anime these days.
The show's animation studio is known for producing over 16 series, including two I'm familiar with: Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu (based on a manga by Katsuwo who also wrote Mitsubishi Colors) and Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina. None of the story elements in either of those series are present in this series.
The voice cast of Otaku Elf is just as strong as the show's opening song. Ami Koshimizu, who voices Elda, also voices the caddy of Aoi in Birdie Wing (Amane Shinjо̄), Mizuki Nakahara in Lycoris Recoil, Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter in Sailor Moon Crystal, Shiori in Princess Connect! Re:Dive, Yang Xiao Long in RWBY: Ice Queendom, and Konomi Yurikawa in Yurikuma Arashi. Yuka Ozaki, the voice of Koito, has lent her voice as Asuka Toyama in BanG Dream!, while Hitomi Sekine, voice of Koyuzu, voiced characters in Teasing Master Takagi-san, Konosuba, and Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood.
Haruka Aikawa, the voice of Koma, previously voiced a character in Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie. Mamiko Noto, voice of Haira, voiced a supporting character named Kazuki Kosuda in B Gata H Kei - Yamada’s First Time, Hakko in Canaan, Elsa in Gunslinger Girl, Kanon's mother in Love Live! Superstar!!, Shimako Toudou in Maria Watches Over Us, Gin Todo in A Place Further Than the Universe, and Saki Arima in Your Lie in April, and many other roles.
All in all, Otaku Elf is highly relatable to the hundreds of thousands of shut-ins in Japan, which the government believes is a "new social issue", and those elsewhere in the world. It might even draw in an audience from anyone who is living at "home" with their parents, or others living a "hermit-like" existence, being social recluses from society.
In any case, I recommend this series highly. I hope that it receives a second season, even though that is unlikely considering the last nine series by the same studio have not been renewed. Often, companies try and limit corporate risk by planning out each season for only 11-13 episodes. If the show is a success, "additional seasons can be ordered" as noted by Justin Sevakis.
Otaku Elf is currently streaming on HIDIVE.

extremely solid first ep for shangri-la frontier, feel like it'll be one of the strongest of the season in some regards
animation is fantastic so far, i'm not that famliar with c2c as a studio (have only seen saitou-san from earlier this year) but the opening shot of a dragon made yesterday's silver link offering look even worse by comparison
story is alright so far, watching mc get familiar with the game mechanics is pretty fun but the actual chaacters aren't all that interesting yet. seems like that'll be something that builds up in later episodes maybe, first ep was more focused on setting the scene which is fine by me
#crab watches#shangri-la frontier#first impressions#actually though i feel very positively about this first ep i'm thinking about dropping this one lol#not bc of anything to do with the show itself#it's just the orig fic project (!!) that i'm hoping to get written soon (!!!) is about vr gaming too#and i don't know if watching something on a similar subject would be prudent at this point#hmmmmm will think more about it

ANIME RECAP: NEWS VERSO L'INFINITO E OLTRE!
A mali estremi, estremi rimedi dunque!

Shangri-La Frontier Episode 4: A Trash Game Realignment of Elevated Tastes
So, to no surprise, this episode is way lighter on action. Which can sometimes be a bit of a concern for viewers. Will it end up a wasted episode, will it cut corners and make things easy on itself? In both cases, that's a no for Shangri-La Frontier as it makes the most of its downtime to really set the stage for the game, giving me a lot to chat about!
First and foremost though, a little detail or two from the start of the episode. We got another bug shown. I know bugs are already associated with the Hizutome household, but I wonder if we'll continue being shown them as a sort of connection from the family to Sunraku's buggy game loving tendencies.
Second, this really fun detail from the game store. On the one TV in the scene they actually bothered making a little video game demo to put on it. A very fun addition to add a bit more life and feel to the scene.
Anyways, let's talk actual episode content. Right away they put focus on exploring Shangri-La Frontier outside of the game, and I think it's a really important piece to take a look at in this sort of context. I'm always big about VR game series taking a minute to exist outside of the game, so seeing stuff like this is really good.
Even better I feel is how they build the game up. Sunraku isn't the first to find Rabituza, which I think is really important in selling the world. It's existed for a hot minute, so people should have discovered things like it and shared that information online. It really creates the feeling of a fleshed out and lively world that Sunraku is taking part in.
Back into the game though, the art in closeups in this episode are really just something else. The detail and shading on them is incredibly good, and is only further accentuated by the strong camera angles.
And then there's the "best" part: the collar. I think it's really great for two reasons. First of all, it's effectively saying that Vysache "owns" Sunraku, but there's also its effects. Before that though, I really like that they snuck something creative in with the collar. It's an unequip-able item, so Sunraku's pretty outraged by it, but he did agree to it. That is, he agreed to the trigger that would equip the collar, so it's not like it was forced on him.
Anyways, the effect of the xp drop, I think it's a great idea. They're building Sunraku up to play a "shitty" game within Shangri-La Frontier effectively, and I think that's really awesome. It's not shitty by nature, like a lot of the game Sunraku plays, but it's shitty because of how he plays it. It's a really thoughtful approach to the concept of the series, and at each turn they find great ways to use it to their advantage.
And the author gets that fighting an impossibly uphill battle can be a little monotonous, so they actually counterbalance the collar with Emul! Just really really smart decisions that put a really great level of awareness into the idea of game balance.
And you know, there's been a lot of talk about Kusoge as of late, so it's great to see Sunraku get back to his roots as a way to establish a party around him. It just makes sense, and is a very fun way to stay true to Sunraku's ideals while providing strong backing for him in this video game world.
Also, goofy glitchy fights. It would have been fun to see them go all out with the idea, but I wouldn't say I'm disappointed.
Getting into the back half of the episode, time sort of flies. There's some good humor thanks to layouts like this one, but for the most part it's talk about expanding the worldview of the viewer.
And I mean, it has to be done at some point or another, so I think filling the gap between area bosses as Sunraku speedruns the early game is the most suitable spot for it. They do a good job of folding it into the natural flow of things and playing off of it, so I don't really have any complaints.
Well, that's a lie, I do have one complaint. They went and showed us such an insanely good looking area boss that I can't wait for next week's episode.
Even better is that, like the Ravenous Python, Sunraku has to face an uphill battle here due to his lack of preparation. Though instead of it being the hidden challenge of poison, this time it's the explicit challenge of being unable to run in a swamp. Just really great ideas that challenge Sunraku's playstyle directly rather than being mostly random obstacles.
Shangri-La Frontier is doing a hell of a lot to remind viewers that this is a video game, while all the while dragging them deeper and deeper into the wonders of its world. C2C is absolutely providing on all fronts for an effort that I could only imagine manga readers are loving at this moment. Really excited to see what they end up doing with the Mud Digger boss fight in the next episode!

Anything that can’t keep up with state-of-the-art VR technology is called a “crap game,” and you see a large number of crap games coming out. Those who devote their lives to clearing these games are called “crap-game hunters,” and Rakuro Hizutome is one of them. The game he’s chosen to tackle next is Shangri-La Frontier, a “god-tier game” that has a total of thirty million players. Online friends… An expansive world… Encounters with rivals… These are changing Rakuro and all the other players’ fates!
