So I’m new to DnD in general, and I just started Critical Role last year. I’m a very detail-oriented person so I’m very slowly making my way through campaign 1. I’m only on episode 39.
But something is standing out to me that makes me so SAD every time I see it. In the last like 6 or so episodes, Travis (Grog) has been trying to make more ability checks. The way his character is built is so single-minded in strength and athleticism that there aren’t many feats he can perform successful checks for that another party member cannot perform exceedingly well instead. So when he asks to make checks, even when someone else is making one, Matt usually just defers to another party member or says no because of advantages attributed to another player or lack thereof in Grog’s attributes.
(Which I kinda take issue with the concept of not letting people with lesser ability scores make checks. I wish there was a feature that when you make checks, the more you make, the more experience you would gain in that area. So regardless of your odds of success in a check, a failed check with still be valuable, as in life failure and practice are both valuable experiences that you learn from. And that would let you level up some abilities)
Now, I am in NO WAY bashing Matt for this, I don’t think there is anything wrong with his DM style. It’s just a result of circumstance of Grog’s ability scores and the roles that the rest of the party falls into due to their ability scores.
I can see that Travis knows he’s not gonna be the most successful one, he just wants to get to play. He wants to get to roll the dice. He wants to interact and have impact. He really takes advantage of the moments when Grog has power or influence in a situation and there is a reason those moments stand out so much (and this Kraven Edge sword is really gonna create some dynamic play for him I think, so I’m excited to see where this goes).
Outside of Combat/Survival, the most he gets to do is tag along with the group and do minor role play with NPCs that he still almost never has to roll for. And that makes it so hard for him to stay involved, and I am just watching him restrain himself in moments where Grog isn’t helpful, BECAUSE HE JUST WANTS TO PLAY! And Travis is so smart. He is figuring out Matt’s plays and making plans in his head sometimes faster than Talisen or Laura are. He’s by far my favorite person in the cast and my FAVORITE to watch. I just really hope he gets to actually PLAY DnD with everyone a little more as the season goes on. Because not increasing in intelligence doesn’t impact experience or instinct and both should be impacted by ability scores and both should get to move up regardless of his character’s restrictions.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

I’m sure someone has already done this but:
1 "Rise of the Chroma Conclave" (LVM2x01) — C1E39 “Omens” & C1E40 “Desperate Measures”
2 "The Trials of Vasselheim" (LVM2x02) — this one’s all over the place with some scenes from their first time in Vasselheim in the ep 16-23 arc, but the C1E43 “Return to Vasselheim” is the best fit
3 "The Sunken Tomb" (LVM2x03) — C1E44 “The Sunken Tomb”
4 "Those Who Walk Away" (LVM2x04) — C1E45 “Those Who Walk Away…”
5 "Pass Through Fire" (LVM2x05) — I can’t decide if i think this episode will be C1E49 “A Name is Earned” or C1E46 “Cindergrove revisited” / C1E22 “Aramente to Pyrah” mashup
6 "Into Rimecleft" (LVM2x06) — not sure on this one either it could be it’s own story, it could be C1E48 “Into the Frostweald” ((but I wouldn’t have thought that episode would be one we needed to keep when cutting stuff down)) if it is E48, my E49 guess for episode 5 would be combined here I would think // Somehow all of that was right; it was a E48-E49 combo, but with the story so changed that it was also it’s own story
7 "The Fey Realm" (LVM2x07) — C1E59 “The Feywild” through E62 “Uninviting Waters”; *one of the reasons I decided to make myself this list was I realized they started going *way* out of order here and I just found it interesting (and understandable). I’m also curious to know what they keep and what they ditch in this ep
8 "Echo Tree" (LVM2x08) — C1E63 “The Echo Tree”
9 "A Test of Pride" (LVM2x09) — C1E51 “Test of Pride”
10 "The Killbox" (LVM2x10) — C1E52 “The Kill Box”
11 "Belly of the Beast" (LVM2x11) — C1E54 “In the Belly of the Beast”
12 "The Hope Devourer" (LVM2x12) — C1E55 “Umbrasyl”

i wanna watch critical role but i have no idea where to start 😭
this is like the best ask to ever get as a critter. there are plenty of good places to start, its just up to you to choose where ^_^
personally, i recommend starting with campaign two. the whole story is completed, its totally standalone from other CR content (so you don't need to watch anything else before), and it has much higher quality setup compared to campaign one. it is very long, but such is the way of critical role, you've just got to jump in. i promise you, its so good
of course the obvious answer is to start with campaign three. its currently airing, it has the fewest episodes, it's CR's flagship show, its great. however, as much as i love c3, it's not the most beginner friendly campaign. its totally possible to enjoy and love it without having seen previous campaigns (i know MANY who started with c3 and loved it!) but imo its enhanced by having seen c1 and especially c2. not knowing the world lore and history makes it a bit harder to grasp what all is going on and a lot of the plot intrigue is fueled by things that happened in c2 if you DO want to watch c3 first, it's a good idea to start with exandria unlimited prime because it introduces 4 of the characters in c3 and is kind of a prelude to the main campaign. it is a little boring (sorry exu), so its understandable if you don't want to watch it, you just might miss out on some context in c3. it's up to you really
you could also start with campaign one, but its hard to recommend over the later campaigns because early c1 has a lot of rocky moments and overall poor production quality. its a good time!!! but not the best first impression for a new critter. luckily, the legend of vox machina exists!! if you want to, you can watch all of the legend of vox machina season one, and then start c1e39 and be pretty much caught up and have skipped over the worst! but if you feel you can stomach poor mic quality and bad editing (and a really irritating ex-cast member), i do recommend watching campaign one starting from episode one :-)
there are some other orders you can watch in but none of them really make sense for CR. getting into the nitty gritty of "when to watch [insert CR show]" would take forever, so just try starting with one of the campaigns and see how you like it!! jooiin the fold
TLDR; start with campaign two its the most beginner friendly and doesnt require you to watch anything else

Travis: You just massacred people. You just committed genocide.
Matt: I just destroyed something that I built. It's a really weird feeling.
Laura: You destroyed your whole city, Matt.
Marisha: The whole city, everyone's dead.
Travis: Well done!
Sam: Not everyone, just a couple of dozen people. And Gilmore.

ok so ik it’s like a huge disaster and a ton of ppl died but i can’t get over how narratively cool the attack of the chroma conclave is. the way vox machina, these heroes of legend, are literally helpless against it. they are literally just citizens, specks in the crowd, watching this unfold, and all they can do is try and usher people to safety. especially since right before this vax had that whole “i don’t know what we’re doing or why” talk with his sister, to then immediately humble them is just........sheesh matt ur a master
