guys, I had a weird idea.

So, Danny and Damian are twins au, right? They used to be identical as children. I say used to, because when Talia smuggled her son out of the League (Ra's was planning a fight to the death, the douche), she got him excessive cosmetic surgery, changing his entire face and lightening his skin closer. (The League has sci-fi technology, just role with it).

Danny ends up living with one of Talia's off-the-books scientists, so she can keep an eye on him, growing up to look different than Damian. Danny finds himself wishing that he still looked like his brother, but there's nothing he can do to change it. Which is all well and good until the portal accident and Danny discovers that his wish to look like his brother again worked, and now Danny and Phantom are physically different, with Phantom looking like Damian with flowy white hair.

A few years pass with no one knowing Danny=Phantom until Dani crashlands, melting and needing help. Danny saves her and she's de-aged to a toddler age, but the Fentons 100% saw him help Dani and maybe see her transform, so they want to experiment on her. Danny bolts with Dani and heads to Gotham, which has enough ambient ecto to keep Dani stable.

(Meanwhile, Talia figures out what really happened to make Danny run and absolutely nukes the Fentons and maybe the GiW. That's her son and granddaughter, you fools.)

Despite Danny trying to go under the radar, but at some point the bats discover Phantom and Dani, maybe Dani escaped in ghost form? she is a toddler after all. Damian immediately recognizes Phantom as his brother, they get confirmation that the two are ghosts. Dani calls Danny daddy and everyone is sad.

And while the bats are trying to figure out a way to approach Phantom, they stumble across Danny and Dani, the later alive and calling this completely different man daddy. The bats put alive Dani and dead Dani together and get human/ghost hybrid, but Danny looks different enough from Phantom that they conclude the two aren't the same.

Which leads to Damian thinking that Danny is some random man who had a child with his dead ghost brother.

thinking about not only the specific people lucanis pulls in to represent the 'locks' in his psyche, but the storytelling that happens in the structure/order of them. the underlying ideas are presented something like:

the lucanis who went into the ossuary never came back out again; he died down there (the boy caterina raised is gone forever) -> you're putting yourself in danger doing this (by being close to me), you should leave because I can't bear it if you get hurt because of me -> it doesn't matter even if we do try this, it won't work anyway (again because of me) ('you know what he's like, you can open the door but he won't walk through it' :'( oofie doofie) -> what if the real secret is that there was never anything but the monster in here from the beginning. you should leave, there was never anything here worth saving in the first place. (implicitly: what if I deserved what happened, all along.)

it runs pretty cleanly from outward-oriented attachment anxiety ('caterina won't even want me back like this, she won't recognize me (the same way I no longer recognize myself)) and gradually deeper inwards until we reach self-image and self worth. or you know, the harrowing basic lack of it lol.

"careful -- they'll know we're not right," spite says in one of their first scenes... but clearly, some very deep part of lucanis has feared or suspected for much longer than that that there's something inherently not right at the core of him, way before any demon entered the picture. and the voice he gives those lines to is the person who should know him better than anyone in the world, who he has loved more than anyone in the world -- and who deliberately chose to hurt him so horrifically anyway. 'It's better if I'm just a monster and deserved what happened than it is to allow for the idea that the brother I love doesn't really exist and maybe never did'. it's better if he's fundamentally flawed in some way that needed fixing to help him survive, and that's why caterina chose to hurt him again and again -- out of love. (this one I think he might have a very sad wakeup call on one day if he ever ends up with the responsibility and care of a child of his own in some way and realizes just how alien the idea of ever intentionally hurting them for any reason is to him. oh buddy. also interesting that he keeps caterina as the outermost lock -- there IS a distance he keeps there that he hasn't with illario. he doesn't resent her 'anymore' he says, but he also keeps her carefully further away from his deepest self.)

as far as I could tell the only note in the mind prison that's fully hidden and needs to be uncovered is the sad painful helpless stupid little truth that even after all this, even knowing what happened... he still loves his brother. is there anything illario could ever do that would make lucanis completely stop loving him, do you think? sometimes the trouble with unconditional love is that it is, well. unconditional, even when some terms and conditions probably would have been in order haha.

that's the pattern you see there again and again; he would rather destroy and abandon and imprison himself at every turn than let go of love, even when it's just scraps, even when there's only ever enough of it to hurt him. it's only when rook shows up and as it were takes his hand and walks along with him that he can entertain the idea of changing the story of what walking out the door might mean in the end.

Not me losing my mind over how good “The Hands of the Emperor” is.

I subjected my eyes to a 1,000 page ebook and finished in 4 days. Every minute of free time for the last two weeks has gone into reading more in the series. I never write down quotes but I have more than 50 from this book. I cried (good tears) on multiple occasions. I WILL be making art at some point (a promise and a threat). If you like stories about kind people working to change the world for good while trying to reconcile their own place in it, do yourself a favor and read it.

i got to add extra Aliyne & Vren dialogue to one of the final scenes for this book and im. holding them both so tightly.

(context: aliyne snuck off down a dark tunnel at the back of the dragon's cave after they killed the dragon, looking for more of its hoard. vren followed her.)

“You never looked for me.” “I did.” She stopped. Thought about turning. Didn’t. “Not very hard.” “You know what would have happened if I’d found you,” Vren said. No inflection. No anger, no sadness; just that matter-of-fact coldness she was all too familiar with. “The same thing that’ll happen now you have? You drag me back to Zhira, dead if you’re feeling nice, alive if you’re not?” “No.” “Then what, Vren?” She did turn now, wanting to punch him in his expressionless face; hug him so she’d have a chance to stab him before he could use his stupid ring and get away. “You just walk away again?” “Yes.” “Then why did you follow me? Not for Sorrow, not to kill me, and for damn sure not to talk to me.” “When you used to sneak off, there was trouble,” he said. “I doubt that’s changed.” “Right. You haven’t changed at all in ten years, so clearly I haven’t either.” She started down the tunnel again, faster, not caring if she walked herself into some black, forgotten pit. “Eleven,” Vren said, quietly, but the only sound to hide it was her footsteps. Recently, I was learning abt birds came across the fact that most birds have a syrinx as their voice box responsible for vocal production. This can allow them to harmonize w/ themselves. I think that would be really cool if Mhin has that ability in both their human and monster form?

And they just- have the ability to speak in two different pitches at the same time and they kind of just resonate it as one voice when speaking. Also, when out of control their voice box is more distorted or harmonized? Just a thought.

will truly never be over how 3/4 and 6/8 meters are used in the soundtrack. for all that it's quite heavy on the experimental/electronic style and difficult-to-parse meters, if amy are present, the most audibly metered and waltz-like are paired with sir john. i'm still early in the rewatch, but I'm relatively certain those meters go away shortly thereafter.

hitoya’s the kind of drunk that does stupid shit when he hits his threshold, like feeling upstaged by jakurai playing piano so he plays drums with tableware lmao but he also has no recollection of getting that faded, like that one time he apparently woke up in a ditch and covered in mud after a night out but deadass didn’t remember how he got there so by all means, he and jakurai are the exact same drunk, it’s just that jakurai has a shit threshold so he gets drunk faster than hitoya but if hitoya were to ever get shitfaced first and jakurai somehow drank something shortly after hitoya hit that point i’m pretty sure whatever city they’re drinking will simply cease to exist due to their combined forces of—
