will truly never be over how 3/4 and 6/8 meters are used in the soundtrack. for all that it's quite heavy on the experimental/electronic style and difficult-to-parse meters, if amy are present, the most audibly metered and waltz-like are paired with sir john. i'm still early in the rewatch, but I'm relatively certain those meters go away shortly thereafter.

#something something the association of the waltz with order victorian england and colonialism #and something that disappears as 'order' on the ship breaks down.#sure folk songs persost among the men in the diegesis.#but i cannot help but feel that the lack of easily parsed meter vanishing (in part or in whole) after episode 3 Means Something.#the opening shot of the ships and the death of sir john also have pretty clear sounding pitch centers.#something that a lot of the work also does not have.#idk. i think there's something there to the dissolution of 17-18th c western tonal harmony as the show progresses.#the terror #sorry this is long. i just have so many thoughts. something is going on there.
