Second take: Needful Things (dir. Fraser C. Heston, 1993)
A mildly entertaining adaptation of King's second-tier novel stars always-solid Sydow, Harris, and Bedelia, who's effervescent in a role that somehow mirrors Annette O'Toole's phenomenal take on Beverly Marsh in the superior TV version of It. Beverly is among the most important literary characters of my childhood, and so are both actresses. Bedelia's two great roles were in Violets Are Blue... and Speechless, none of which became successful enough to launch her film career; she was probably closest to it after playing a boring role of Bruce Willis's wife in the Die Hard series did. Her role, as well as Plummer's signature coy-turning-slightly-psychotic character, is the highlight of this film. The plot is simple: Sydow, who incarnates the evil typical of King's roles (an energy vampire, just like Colin Robinson!), comes to a town (again, typical of King's plot settings) and turns its inhabitants against each other. But eventually they overcome! The production value could be higher though: particularly the score and the sepia, slo-mo effect in phantasy scenes are tacky. I like the pacing though: the film is long and doesn't hurry.

✼ ʾ 𝑎𝑐𝑡. 𝒊𝒊 , the story so far .
caiden was born in gatlinburg , tennessee to a once rather happy couple . the only son and youngest of three . michael and tabitha were highschool sweethearts and in a rather misguided attempt the couple believed a son would be the key to their happily ever after . two daughter's later and they were almost ready to give up . until caiden came along in the winter of '98 . he was everything they wanted , everything they thought they needed and for a while the joy that came from their little boy was enough to keep their growing boredom of each other at bay . caiden was a happy child , enjoyed being outdoors more than his father could have ever hoped . his childhood was nothing out of the ordinary and that was something he'd soon realize he'd taken for granted .
at ten years old his parents divorced and just a year later himself , his sisters , and their mother moved away from the appalachia region to saint albans , vermont . it was a shock to a young caiden's system and he became much more reserved and to himself . his father was his best friend and now he no longer had that comfort . the friends he did make weren't necessarily ones his mother approved of . often telling him " you're on a road to no where " and " you are who you surround yourself with " , which only made him act out more .
come highschool , his mother had ran out of places to turn when it came to caiden's behavior . she pushed for him to join the jrotc at his highschool . after months of push back he finally gave in . it was a turning point in his life , for sure . the bad seed of town becoming someone who could potentially have a future . he still didn't excel in school though , his gpa come senior proved he'd done just enough to graduate but that was about it . he was left with two options , similar to most people who grew up in such a small town : go into the military or die in a small town doing menial jobs . he chose the army , atleast he'd be able to leave his small town .
at just nineteen , caiden was deployed . it was time to really grow up . his life and the other's lives around him depended on it . they still had fun on the base when they could though and after a few months overseas he learned he was a rather gifted musician . posting jam sessions onto tiktok whenever he had time , more so for his family to see but after he posted an original song ( animal ) his account went viral . he rode the wave of popularity despite having much more pressing issues to be concerned with but when his deployment came to an end and he returned back to the states he decided to shift into inactive duty and focus more on the music . for the first time in his life , he was presented with a third option and although he was never the smartest guy around he was smart enough to know he'd never get a chance like this again .
he made the move to los angeles at twenty two , despite refusing to sign to a label because he didn't want his music to become " pop junk " as he would say . truthfully , he hated everything about the city . he'd never met so many people made up of plastic . his northern attitude not one that normally rubbed anyone the right way but with every month he pushed through , the success from his music career became more tangible . he became a hidden gem artist with a bit of a cult following . haters would say people were just obsessed with his looks but his real fans knew , there was no one more real than caiden .
his first scandal came just a year after his arrival in los angeles , two months after his debut studio album release . arrested in west hollywood after roughing up a paparazzo . at first public opinion tried to turn him into some angry military guy lost in the city of angeles , while he does harbor a certain level of anger in him , that wasn't quite the full story . instead he was protecting a girl , much more famous than him and trying to keep her private life , well , private . the truth never came out because soon after she broke things off with him in fear of what the public would think if she was connected to him . this only furthered his frustrations with the city and the people who lived in it .
just last year caiden gave in and signed to universal & mercury at his manager's advisal and while he's still wary of any input not from co - writers or producers he's worked with for years , it's proven to catapult his career in a direction he never imagined . his name becoming so much more than one only familiar on the internet . the attention from hollywood has brought him into rooms he never could have seen himself in . this year proving to him , perhaps music isn't the only option he has ( although he'd never turn his back to it ) .
✼ ʾ 𝑎𝑐𝑡. 𝒊𝒊𝒊 , the inner circle .
part of me : " cause you were only a little bit of light and you were only a minute of my time . i dont miss you . i miss the way you made me feel . " his first and only love . their relationship had alot of really high highs and extremely low lows and i see them as having had an on and off again thing going and he always down plays their relationship but it's more so to make himself feel better for not being better for her .
howling : " but i refuse to be a burden ... cause sometimes i feel this emptiness howling out . is there something keeping me here for the minute , darling ? " he's never been big on talking about his emotions , not his thing but this person is as close to a confidant that he has . the issue comes in when they try to let out their issues to him , often not paying much attention to their issues or seeing them as such . they're getting a bit sick of this feeling like a one sided friendship .
dial drunk : " im remembering i promised to forget you now but it's raining and im calling drunk ... am i honest still ? am i half the man i used to be ? i doubt it , forget about it , whatever " . this is the girl he dated during his scandal a couple years ago , they were only together for a short time but it was one of those whirlwind romances . he would've done anything for her at the time ( including getting arrested * major side eye * ) . he holds a bit of animosity toward the entire situation , especially given that she just entirely stopped answering his calls and they haven't seen each other since . probably because she steers clear of places he frequents .
also bring me these : one , two , three , four , five , six , seven , eight , nine , ten .

they’ve got a bad reputation (they’ll get a standing ovation)
The spotlight clicks on, floods the stage until the shadows are sent scampering away, every flaw and every fear in sharp contrast for the audience to feast upon; but what horrors lurk where the darkness prowls, trapped at the edges of the script like handcuffs around the actor? May life mirror art at the best of times, the worst of times.
Happy @felinettenovember, y’all! We’re back to terrible o’clock writing times with @musicfren, who is collaborating with me on this fic-turned-mechanism-through-which-to-preach-on-the-spot-Hamlet-analysis. He’ll be posting the second part on his account tomorrow, during which the bulk of my meta nonsense is going to come through. Are you following him yet? @emzurl spoiled this whole story with their art and @dumpsdoods simply spoils me with theirs.
Part 1 below. Part 2 upcoming.
“Alright, take ten, my dudes! We’ll go from Act III, Scene 1 after you get some snacks and chill.”
Marinette lets out an amused laugh as she thumbs through her copy of the script, ignoring the throng of hungry students pushing past her, desperate for this grueling 5 hour rehearsal to end. Brevity may be the soul of wit, but certainly not of this play. Nino makes a good director, she thinkst: loud, relentlessly positive, able to carry the sagging energy of an entire unwilling highschool production on his shoulders.
But alas, poor Nino is fighting a losing battle. Everyone knows that the point of this play is the obligatory report they will all have to write for their literature class at the end of the week. Almost no one here can act, and Marinette’s arms are beginning to grow tired from carrying up the entire play. With scarcely a week left it looks like most people are planning to coast the rest of the way to a clean C+. The part of Hamlet still has not been cast.
Akuma attacks have pushed back the discussions they were meant to have on the play, and Bustier couldn’t cancel the major assignment for the unit; instead, she had told them to analyze the play through the role of their choice after embodying it for the few weeks it took to rehearse and perform the production. Their in-class discussions have been condensed into a take-home paper on top of the already obligatory theatre performance and pretty much everyone knows that Bustier would be lenient on them just for that. And Nino knows they know, and Marinette is starting to suspect that he is itching to “chill like he keeps telling them to.
Marinette chews on the corner of her pencil, running a finger over the veritable bloodbath of neat pink notes she’s crammed into the margins of every page. She’s on in the next scene, and she wants to make sure she’s got all the nuances of the character, her character, exactly as she plans to bring her to life. Looking over the script, Marinette starts to regret not typing the notes to begin with: her entire essay is definitely already fully composed. Maybe Max will consider building her an application that can scan the document and transpose it to a word processor as editable text…
“Give me your hand, if we be friends, and Robin shall restore amends.”
Marinette looks up to see Felix quoting Shakespeare, trying very hard to look inconspicuous in his black stage-hand clothes, wheeling a stand of fake swords almost as tall as he was. She watches with some amusement as he struggles to set it upright, and makes absolutely no move to help him.
“I wasn’t expecting to see you on stage any time this week,” she says, sticking her tongue out and being far cuter than it had any right to be. Felix, sweating, scrambles for a riposte.
“I hadn’t expected you out of the home ec room at all. Shouldn’t you be half-drowned in fabric or something?”
She sends him a quizzical look. He wonders if the akuma attacks have scrambled her memory. “Because...you’ve got costumes to work on? As the play’s costume designer?”
“Oh, I’m not doing costumes this year, actually.” Marinette laughs awkwardly. “I’m not even sure what I would write about if I were.”
Felix stares at her. The sword he was carrying slid out of his grasp with a dull clang.
“...what are you writing about as a stagehand?”
Felix decides to pretend the last few moments were a fever dream and focus on answering this one very reasonable question. “I’m looking at the blocking and the prop placement and the lighting and how it impacts the effect of the character portrayal on the audience and what information manages to get conveyed to the audience.”
Marinette offers a suitably impressed ooh at this. “How far have you gotten with it?”
“Darling, we don’t even have a Hamlet. The titular character. I’ve done nothing.” Felix offers the most deadpan look he can muster and startles at her giggle. “What, how far have you gotten?!”
Marinette flashes her script at him, more notes than dialogue at this point.
“You are possibly the only person in the class thinking anything even remotely deep about this play. What is all that for?!”
“Hopefully for a handwritten notes to editable text conversion app.”
Felix only narrowly avoids gaping. What?! “...is that what’s scrawled on every corner of that script you’re clutching?” He grins crookedly at her, and her traitorous heart skips a beat.
“...oh! no, um, those are my notes. For… my essay? I’ve written out the character analyses into where the text supports my arguments and… um… yeah.” She flushes with the realization that 1) that was completely out of context for him because 2) he cannot, in fact, read her mind.
“...Marinette, for what do you possibly need notes?”
“...to play my character?”
“Oh, wow, are you playing a guy? Impressive, tiny girl.” He rakes his gaze down her body and Marinette is flushed for a whole new reason now. She pushes to her feet and doesn’t bother to care about the swords she knocks over.
“I’m not, actually.”
“Why?! Who is there to play among the female characters? Marinette, I took you as someone who plays characters of worth.”
She looks up at him, eyes wide with dangerous innocence “Are female characters not valuable?”
“I-- no, that’s not what I meant and you know it! Shakespeare is historical, and male-centric, and writes women who do little more than parrot the views of the men around them if they get any dialogue at all. There’s no substance there! Who are you possibly going to play, Gertrude? Ophelia?!?” Felix’s tone makes it very clear what he thinks of the only two options she has available to her.
Marinette sweeps past him coolly, her hair whipping against his cheek. “I am playing Ophelia, actually.”
Stumbling, Felix turns and gives her a wry grin. “Oh darn, I’m sorry for your loss.” He makes a valiant effort at replicating her stuck out tongue, not that Marinette is looking. It’s for the best: it’s not nearly as cute on him.
“Excuse you?” Marinette halts in her tracks, shadowed amongst the heavy curtains of stageside. Her voice echoes hauntingly around the empty theatre.
“...c’mon. Ophelia does less than Gertrude. She even has fewer lines!”
With great restraint, Marinette manages to do nothing more than turn to face Felix, trembling with repressed rage. “Does less? Ophelia is the only person in this play who does anything at all that isn’t driven by a madman’s plot! Ophelia is the only person in this play who can pull Hamlet out of insanity, even if for little more than a moment.”
Frustrated, Felix tosses the nearest item at her and growls when she catches it neatly. It’s a victory when she stalks off across the stage to the opposite wing, gathering her notes and settling herself neatly in a prim fury. She’s wrong, she’s wrong, she’s wrong. He whirls around and starts rearranging everything she knocked over, grumbling under his breath.
“Ophelia is the only character in that play who makes zero choices of her own. Even her death was a result of her tripping into a lake.”
There’s a crashing sound, and Felix spins back around to see Marinette bolt upright, tempestuous in her temper. Felix may have gotten a bit too loud with that last statement.
“How can you say that? That’s the most significant choice she makes in the whole play!”
Felix can feel the irritation rising, hot and ugly in his chest. Why is she being so stubborn? Marinette makes a gesture at him, quick and angry from the other side of the room. Felix squints and tilts his head, struggling to what she was doing from across the stage. Then all at once it hits him.
“Do… do you bite your thumb at me?!” He splutters in indignant incoherency, his grip tightening on whatever he’s holding until the plastic grooves bite into his skin.
“I do bite my thumb at thee, sir.”
Felix steps onto stage, glaring. Marinette matches him step for step, glare for angry glare. Nino gasps, cowers, and then grabs his camera.
The class, milling around aimlessly as their ten minutes ticked to an end, comes to a collective halt. Nino sheppards them out of the way of the camera’s shot. They flock without protest to the edges of the theatre, terrified to watch this trainwreck unfold, terrified they’ll miss even a second of it. The die has been cast. Who now the price of his dear blood doth owe?
Nino can only hope that the set backgrounds manage to come out of this intact.

test time: answer these questions if you remember. then tag people you want to have answer these questions.
when did you first start roleplaying?: On tumblr? Well, my longest standing indie blog dates back to 2014 at least. (Idr know how much longer ago b/c I scrubbed almost all of it) I did group roleplaying before I did tumblr indie and that was during the height of Degrassi: TNG SO idkkk ( @smokinglipsx you was there, how far back was that? lol) I think my very first roleplaying experiences were over yahoo messenger/aim and then briefly livejournal then here (lots of DTNG canon and oc stuff), fuck it’s been a journey. You know how many email accounts I have bruned through in my life? SMH who was your first character?: lawd idk. if tumblr group, then probably canon Jay Hogart for DTNG rpg cuz he the 1. For indie tumblr, my first characters were a trio: Sebastian (Ezra Miller fc - tortured artist), Camille (Francia Raisa fc - promiscuous co-ed) and Dom (Joe Manganiello fc - bearded independent contractor god) who has been your favorite character to play?: Ugh. Why you wanna do this to me? I love the damaged ones so Max Sheppard (Charlie Hunnam fc - alcoholic pawn shop owner), Saoirse Kebede (Ruth Negga fc - adorable ruthless crime boss), Vincenzo Fitsimmons (Zachary Quinto fc - psychopathic lawyer/Dexter superfan) AND though not damaged, Charlie (Russell Tovey fc) cuz he daddy bae who is a character you miss playing?: Hmmmm. Saoirse Kebede (Ruth Negga fc) @presidentdriver - I miss Saoirse and Billy OKAY what is one thing you completely regret about your rp past?: NOT A DAMN THING.. No, I do have regerts. Probably re-partnering with people I didn’t like partnering with in the first place. And NO that doesn’t apply to any of my current partners before any of you get worried :p what is one of your favorite rp memories?: Generally, when I meet someone via RP and we click then we become friends then we still fuck with each other years later cuz we still out here rping XD

2019 GET SERIOUS State of Origin teams
LONG this column has advocated for the return of State of Origin. But alas, and it’s a strong rebuttal, the logistics of such a revival make for work too hard.
However, ten-game Big V veteran Garry Lyon last week on football’s preeminent analysis program Front Bar, when asked by the game’s best, hard-hitting journalist Mick Molloy, certainly promoted the naming of a team even if such a fixture wasn’t to be held.
“Answer me this Garry, why don’t they still just symbolically hand out the jumper?” Molloy poised.
“They should,” the five-time All Australian, former Demon captain responded.
“Even if they don’t play,” Molloy continued, “like they do All-Australian, here’s our Big V best 22 of the year, because that would still mean something.”
“It should be on their resume, at the end of their footy career, (for example) Patrick Cripps, he is a Western Australian, he should be a (hypothetical) eleven-time Western Australian player, and I’m (really big on that); and (Marcus) Bontempelli should be recognised as Victorian player,” Lyon suggested.
Mick. Garry. Next time we get a beer the first one is one me. What common sense!
So, without further ado, and to be honest these teams where in the can for this week anyway but the timing from the lads last Thursday is just gravy, let’s name the 2019 teams for the three main states (sorry Tassie), as if they were to actually pull on the boots.
Therefore, unlike the All-Australian team which is constructed for naming-sake only, knowing there are no repercussions for picking players out of position – this is the opposite.
In an ideal world, and anyone who knows this column well, we’d have a game in March to look forward to, so we’re pretending at least that this is the case.
Alrighty, no more dribble, here’s South Australia:
FB: Rory Laird (Adelaide) – Phil Davis (GWS) – Shannon Hurn (West Coast, captain)
HB: Hamish Hartlett (Port Adelaide) – Tom Jonas (Port Adelaide) – Ryan Burton (Port Adelaide)
C: Brad Ebert (Port Adelaide) – Shane Edwards (Richmond) – Jared Polec (North Melbourne)
HF: Lincoln McCarthy (Brisbane) – Tim O’Brien (Hawthorn) – Connor Rozee (Port Adelaide)
FF: Orazio Fantasia (Essendon) – Darcy Fogarty (Adelaide) – Paul Puopolo (Hawthorn)
Foll: Brodie Grundy (Collingwood) – Chad Wingard (Hawthorn) – Lachie Neale (Brisbane)
Inter: Jack Redden (West Coast), Bryce Gibbs (Adelaide), Shaun Burgoyne (Hawthorn), Jack Graham (Richmond)
Not their strongest side in their history but still an interesting one. Totally bereft of key position talent but O’Brien and Fogarty the last month saved the selectors bacon, otherwise it was picking a ruckman out of position or putting all the eggs in the Justin Westhoff basket.
Onball ain’t super strong but with Grundy and still some decent players its competitive at least, and the backline is pretty robust, not short on talent even if not at the level of the other two teams below.
In truth there were a few too many drafts the last five-seven years without top-end SA talent but the last few drafts have plenty so come back in a few years and this team looks a lot better. Now the Vics:
FB: Tom Stewart (Geelong) – Michael Hurley (Essendon) – Nick Vlaustin (Richmond)
HB: Lachie Whitfield (GWS) – Robbie Tarrant (North Melbourne) – James Sicily (Hawthorn)
C: Jackson Macrae (Footscray) – Dustin Martin (Richmond) – Steele Sidebottom (Collingwood)
HF: Robbie Gray (Port Adelaide) – Tom Lynch (Richmond) – Gary Ablett (Geelong)
FF: Jordan De Goey (Collingwood) – Jeremy Cameron (GWS) – Toby Greene (GWS)
Foll: Max Gawn (Melbourne) – Marcus Bontempelli (Footscray) – Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong)
Inter: Luke Shuey (West Coast), Josh Kelly (GWS), Ben Cunnington (North Melbourne), Travis Boak (Port Adelaide, captain)
Lots of stiff blokes here. Houli gets pipped by Whitfield, Houli had the better year but we’d prefer Whitfield if we’re actually playing a game next March. Vlaustin picks himself for a pocket. Stewart and Sicily in the same team is bananas
Treloar, Worpel, the list goes on for stiff blokes in that midfield. But wanted to pick some inside blokes as we’re planning for a ‘real game’ so Cunnington and Boak get a Guernsey.
Lynch demands centre-half-forward and can relieve Gawn in the ruck for all of a few minutes when needed, otherwise it’s a forward line where everyone is the best in their respective position. Now for their equals right now, the Sandgropers:
FB: Ben Stratton (Hawthorn) – Alex Rance (Richmond) – Brad Sheppard (West Coast)
HB: Lewis Jetta (West Coast) – Jeremy McGovern (West Coast) – Jason Johannisen (Footscray)
C: Mitch Duncan (Geelong) – Nat Fyfe (Fremantle, captain) – Bradley Hill (Fremantle)
HF: Lance Franklin (Sydney) – Rory Lobb (Fremantle) – Michael Walters (Fremantle)
FF: Jack Darling (West Coast) – Josh Kennedy (West Coast) – Liam Ryan (West Coast)
Foll: Nic Naitanui (West Coast) – Patrick Cripps (Carlton) – Tom Mitchell (Hawthorn)
Inter: Tim Kelly (Geelong), Stephen Coniglio (GWS), Elliott Yeo (West Coast) Jaeger O’Meara (Hawthorn)
Right, this team beats the Big V, it just does. And its arguably the state’s best ever team, that we’ll never see. Firstly, yes, Lobb, have to pick him to relieve Naitanui and to be honest, as centre-half-forward, his best footy at the Giants before moving home certainly can’t be scratched at. Plus Buddy at this age is more than happy to dominate the arc
Midfield is ridiculous. O’Meara as the eighth wheel, Jesus Christ.
And the backline balances shutdown and elite speed of half back with the best contested mark in the country at centre-half-back.
Insane team.

Your Crush - One Shot
Just to be sure cx ; Y/C/N = your crush's name Y/N = your name Y/N/N = your nickname ___________________________ *laying in bed* Late sunday night. I am lying in my room doin nothing. Normally I would be at Y/C/N house watching a movie or maybe even playing a bordgame. But he was on vacation with his family. So, I was by myself for three weeks. I hate it when leaves. I feel so lonely when he's gone. {flasbackk} When we met, I thought he was just to cute! I was walking in the park, taking a stroll because that's the best thing to do! Fresh air. Most of the time there would be some cute boys around. Unfortunately not today. I was lookinh around slightly dancing to my music. I heard some faraway yelling behind me. I grabbed my headphone and turned around to see what was going on. I was knocked to the ground before I could see anything. "What the heck!?". Was the first thing I said. I looked around me and saw a big adorable German sheppard next to me. It came closer and smelled my face before licking it like crazy. "Max! Max! Stop that!!" I heard. The voice came from a pretty goodlooking boy running towards us. He grabbed the German sheppard appearantly known as 'Max' by his collar and pulled him away from me. "Bad boy Max. You fon't just tun away and almost attack people!" He said as if the dog knew what he was saying. 'Max' just sat down with his tongue outside his mouth. "Are you alright?" He asked me making a gesture of helping me up. I took his hand and stoof up, dusting off my pants. "Yeah, yeah. I'm okay." I looked at his face. I frowned. "Why was your dog running so fast for?" I asked looking around, searching for a source of exciment for the little k-9. "I think he saw a squirrel or something. He really, really likes small creatures." He said, blushing a little bit. "Oh. Well. I get that kind of makes sense then." I say. "Hi, I am Y/N. You are.." "I'm Y/C/N. Nice to meet you." He said with a dorky smile. "Nice to meet you too." I said with a small grin. I remember it so well. It was so casual yet so stupidly romcom material. We didn't actually date right away. We were friends for about two years when he asked to be his girlfriend. It was the cutest thing ever. He made a simple video of him saying things about us and me. He played it at our movie night. He even had this little rose. I didn't even notice it that he had brought it with him. I swear sometimes, he's like a magician. *the motor of a car roars outside your house* I walk to my bedroom window to look who is driving by and see Y/C/N getting out of the car. He looked at my house and saw me. He started walking to your front door. "Oh my godd!!" I screamed. I ran downstairs and opened the door. Y/C/N opened his arms for you to jump in. He almost fell over because of my speed but I didn't care. "I missed you, Y/N/N." He whispered in my ear. I jsut hugged him tighter, glad that he was back.

State teams: We name the best of the best
IT’S BEEN 18 years since State of Origin footy last graced the AFL calendar but the concept continues to capture the imagination of fans across the country.
The debates are seemingly endless. Which state boasts the best midfield? Which club would be best represented across all four state teams? And would the Big V still reign supreme, or does one of the rival states have claims to the crown?
Our writers have put their heads together and come up with four State of Origin teams – Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and the Allies (NSW/ACT, Queensland, Tasmania, NT) – that could take the field if the games were played this weekend (so injuries were considered).
Under our rules, a state could only claim ownership of a player if he had played his junior football (U15-U18) in that state – the player’s birthplace was considered irrelevant. Overseas players were aligned to the Allies.
ALLIES
B: Jarrod Harbrow, Dane Rampe, Jeremy Howe HB: Callum Mills, Steven May, Zac Williams C: Isaac Smith, Dayne Beams, Nick Riewoldt HF: Steven Motlop, Taylor Walker, Mav Weller F: Jack Riewoldt, Ben Brown, Luke Breust R: Toby Nankervis, Isaac Heeney, Dayne Zorko INT: Sam Gilbert, Zach Tuohy, Jack Steele, Lachie Weller UNLUCKY: Harris Andrews, Jarrod Witts, Josh Green
A versatile line-up from around the country The Allies line-up is young but stacked full of talent, with the spine as good as any representative team you’ll see. Williams, Howe, and Harbrow give the back half plenty of dash and attack, with Rampe and Howe able to play tall or small depending on the opposition and, along with May and Mills, all six defenders use the footy well by foot. Gilbert and Tuohy are also outstanding options when they get on the ground.
Smith and Nick Riewoldt bring two totally different looks on the wing, while Nankervis is a huge presence in the ruck and has Ben Brown as back-up when he needs a rest. Beams and Heeney add class to the midfield, Zorko brings the pace, and Steele and Lachie Weller the back-up run off the bench.
Mav Weller can be added to the onball mix when he’s not inside 50, along with Motlop and Breust, with Walker and Jack Riewoldt able to be deep threats or play up the ground.
Rampe was a selection headache given he’s only played three games, but he was just too good to leave out, with Andrews stiff to miss the team, along with the injured Cyril Rioli, Grant Birchall and Mitch Robinson.
SELECTORS: Adam Curley (chairman), Michael Whiting, Peter Ryan, Matt Thompson, Nat Edwards
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
B: Rory Laird, Phil Davis, Tom Jonas HB: Shannon Hurn, Heath Grundy, Shaun Burgoyne C: Jared Polec, Bryce Gibbs, Bernie Vince HF: Paul Puopolo, Justin Westhoff, Shane Edwards F: Orazio Fantasia, Daniel Menzel, Brodie Grundy R: Sam Jacobs, Brad Ebert, Lachie Neale INT: Caleb Daniel, Brodie Smith, Ryan Burton, Trent Dumont UNLUCKY: Hamish Hartlett, Andrew Mackie, Jack Hombsch
Small forward lines are the way to go There’s no shortage of quality defenders in the South Australian team. The job Tom Jonas did on shutting down Gold Coast star Tom Lynch got him over the line, Rory Laird is in brilliant form, veteran Hawk Shaun Burgoyne rose to the occasion against the Swans while Heath Grundy (Sydney) and Phil Davis (Greater Western Sydney) have been superb in key defensive posts for their respective sides.
It was tough to leave out Hamish Hartlett and Jack Hombsch, who have both been important contributors for the Power, while Andrew Mackie’s smarts and experience are an essential piece of the Cats’ backline.
The starting midfielders pick themselves. Brad Ebert is in career-best form, Bernie Vince can be employed as a tagger or win his own ball, while Jared Polec’s raking left foot is valuable on the wing.
A lack of key forwards means Daniel Menzel starts at full-forward. The general consensus was to start Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy on the bench, but the chairman pulled rank to have a tall target inside the forward 50. Chad Wingard’s calf injury rules him out, while Travis Varcoe also wasn’t considered.
There was quite a bit of debate about the make-up of the bench. Selecting Trent Dumont ahead of Wayne Milera to add another midfielder instead of a winger/forward was another chairman’s call, while the versatility of NAB AFL Rising Star nominee Ryan Burton gives him the edge over several other contenders.
SELECTORS: Lee Gaskin (chairman), Ben Guthrie, Jennifer Phelan, Marc McGowan, Dinny Navaratnam
VICTORIA
B: Heath Shaw, Robbie Tarrant, Dylan Roberton HB: Easton Wood, Michael Hurley, Sam Docherty C: Josh Kelly, Joel Selwood, Zach Merrett HF: Marcus Bontempelli, Joe Daniher, Dustin Martin F: Toby Greene, Jeremy Cameron, Eddie Betts R: Shane Mumford, Patrick Dangerfield, Rory Sloane INT: Ollie Wines, Gary Ablett, Andrew Gaff, Clayton Oliver UNLUCKY: Marc Murphy, Scott Pendlebury, Tom Lynch (Gold Coast), Matthew Kreuzer, Seb Ross
How can you not love this team? It contains a few players who would have been staples of any Victorian team for years such as Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood, Rory Sloane and Gary Ablett, but also recognises those whose stars have risen over the last season or so, such as Marcus Bontempelli, Toby Greene, Dustin Martin and Robbie Tarrant.
We’ve also picked the bolters, those whose form this year has been too good to ignore. So welcome to the Big V Joe Daniher, Dylan Roberton, Josh Kelly, Zach Merrett and Sam Docherty and brace yourself for the firm E.J. Whitten handshake when you are presented with your first jumper. Clayton Oliver gets in based on potential as much as anything. We want him to be committed to the cause for years to come and what better way than to be around these players.
We’ve structured this side so that Daniher would give Shane Mumford a chop-out in the ruck, which leaves Matty Kreuzer, who is having a cracking season for the Blues, as a very unlucky omission. And when Scott Pendlebury cannot get a game, we must be going OK.
Max Gawn is probably the one player who would have been picked if not for injury.
This team won’t let the Big V down and in the words of the late great E.J., will “stick it right up them”.
SELECTORS: Ashley Browne (chairman), Nick Bowen, Ben Collins, Howard Kotton
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
B: Nathan Wilson, Alex Rance, Brad Sheppard HB: Elliot Yeo, Jeremy McGovern, Jason Johannisen C: Bradley Hill, Patrick Cripps, Mitch Duncan HF: Michael Walters, Lance Franklin, Cam McCarthy F: Jeff Garlett, Paddy Ryder, Charlie Cameron Ruck: Aaron Sandilands, Nat Fyfe, Tom Mitchell INT: Connor Blakely, Matt Priddis, Daniel Wells, Stephen Hill UNLUCKY: Jack Darling, Sam Menegola, Sam Powell-Pepper
How would this team look without so many injuries? Injuries to key players caused the WA selection panel one or two headaches. Traditionally the Sandgropers’ forward line is the envy of every state, but losing dual Coleman medallist Josh Kennedy to a calf hurts, especially with Jesse Hogan on the comeback from testicular cancer and Rory Lobb battling a groin complaint. Jack Darling has booted 19 goals this year and his forward pressure is elite, but there was plenty of debate about his spot in the line-up and he loses out to Cam McCarthy (14 goals).
Paddy Ryder arguably deserves the No.1 ruck spot, but a reshuffle has landed him at full-forward, while Aaron Sandilands has been rushed back from hamstring tightness to lead a midfield dominated by Dockers.
The engine room boasts a nice blend with ball-winners Nat Fyfe, Patrick Cripps and Tom MItchell complemented by the leg-speed and class of Stephen Hill, brother Bradley, Daniel Wells and even Michael Walters pushing up as a high half-forward. Connor Blakely would tag the opposition’s best onballer.
The backline practically picked itself, although Ben Stratton being unavailable due to a knee complaint was a blow. Alex Rance and Jeremy McGovern would have to be the best full-back and centre half-back combo going around, while Nathan Wilson, Elliot Yeo and Jason Johannisen are walk-up starts.
SELECTORS: Travis King (chairman), Nathan Schmook, Ryan Davidson, Callum Twomey
