supernatural s1e12 faith (w. sera gamble, raelle tucker)

(this is a rewatch so spoilers abound)

same old story, i'm struggling. mostly convinced my depression (and/or the meds) just shuffle my executive function around but never increase it. imagine a yahtzee cup shaking the dice around, let's see what i get this time

very pretty and reminiscent of xfiles, but better car. cue me searching for the oldsmobile that wasn't terrible in the xf movie, which then i run into the firefox/yt bug so i have to wait 5 minutes for an incredibly shitty recording of a tv playing an xf/oldsmobile intrigue promo to load. this is going great. maybe i don't wanna see our dean get electrocuted

i don't remember if they go into this any more but i wonder how much of this was hinting at the long game (nevermind roy doesn't actually have any powers that we know of). could work for all manner of points along the story within the s1-5 arc for him though

she's been in a couple of my things too, including four (4!) episodes of the xfiles and uh, she was dr hess in s12 of spn for 3 episodes?? lol no wonder she was familiar. i guess i didn't look her up

oof, that small "i'm sorry" from sam got me. so this scene originally has don't fear the reaper by blue oyster cult, clip here if interested. i don't know that i think it fits that much better, feels like it's just too cheekily appropriate they had to use it somewhere.

i appreciate the dividers not being some godawful cheesy thing but i'm also laughing at how big this motel room is. and full ass kitchen basically, only vaguely kitchenette in the fact that the fridge and stove are like. 3/4 size. it's a cool set but i often think their motel sets are bonkers in one way or another regardless

Second take: Needful Things (dir. Fraser C. Heston, 1993)

A mildly entertaining adaptation of King's second-tier novel stars always-solid Sydow, Harris, and Bedelia, who's effervescent in a role that somehow mirrors Annette O'Toole's phenomenal take on Beverly Marsh in the superior TV version of It. Beverly is among the most important literary characters of my childhood, and so are both actresses. Bedelia's two great roles were in Violets Are Blue... and Speechless, none of which became successful enough to launch her film career; she was probably closest to it after playing a boring role of Bruce Willis's wife in the Die Hard series did. Her role, as well as Plummer's signature coy-turning-slightly-psychotic character, is the highlight of this film. The plot is simple: Sydow, who incarnates the evil typical of King's roles (an energy vampire, just like Colin Robinson!), comes to a town (again, typical of King's plot settings) and turns its inhabitants against each other. But eventually they overcome! The production value could be higher though: particularly the score and the sepia, slo-mo effect in phantasy scenes are tacky. I like the pacing though: the film is long and doesn't hurry.

Apologies to Elizabeth Blackmore, but one character that didn’t work for me in Supernatural was Lady Toni. I don’t know what it is about English accents that Americans find inherently more commanding or chilling, but it doesn’t work if you actually are English. You need something else to lend your character mystique. Not least because, if you cast an Australian to do an average middle-class London accent, and dress her in off-the-peg cheap capri trousers and knock-off cricket jumpers, just slapping a ‘Lady’ on her will never hit the cold-hearted aristo vibe you’re going for.

(Dr Hess was another matter. The outfits were still kind of embarrassing, but Gillian Barber nailed her old-money accent and 20th Century public school psychopathy.)

Why? Because if she's willing to do this than why wouldn't she do that? As Mick said "the code is what makes a young boy kill his best friend". Except it extends much further than that. As proven:

Now, tell me (I dare you), that these scenes are not the axact same occurrence, just years later. Why do you think that Ketch is so reluctant to admit that he cares about someone? Because he knows this corrupt sadistic bitch would make him kill them. She doesn't like her Hunters getting too close to anyone. And, especially, doesn't want them to see the error of her ways. Not that TFW is much better because, frankly they aren't. In comparison (AKA to Mick and Ketch) they'd seem damn near like saints but we're not talking about that, are we? Not only was Mick slipping from her iron grasp, so was Ketch. So, she felt the need to correct them. It's no different. And if the fantheory is right about a Mick x Ketch relationship in there later years of Kendricks is correct, I'm surprised she didn't do it sooner. Because I know she's the reason they broke up. Fuck her. Miss against happiness and anything decent. She took away Mick's childhood friend, Ketch's twin, and then she wanted one to kill the other. Reasons like this is why I hate her.

There should be a support group for the British Men of Letters because of the shit she put them through and made them commit. And don't even try to say she wasn't forcing there hand. There's only one way out and that's death. Also, did you ever think the reason why Ketch went along with it is because he knew Toni and Mick (his ex-lover and best friend) were safer dead than alive.

Which goes to show the truth about Dr. Hess and the fact that she had that whole thing planned before she ever contacted Mick to return to HQ. Ketch said he didn't do it and he doesn't straight up lie (only withholds information, not exactly the same thing). So, she made it look like Ketch had texted him, knowing far well that Mick (the caring soul that he is) would respond almost immediately, thinking Ketch was hurt or something. He did seem genuinely concerned and you know it. I wanted Ketch to kill her. Not then (that would make everything worse for them), but later. Like when Jody killed her. Ketch had every right and Jody didn't even know her. And then Team Free Will treating Ketch like he's a worse dick than they are when he was the only one who gave a genuine fuck about Mick. Might I remind you that it's Sam who sent him to his death? Which put Ketch in the worst situation possible. He had two choices: kill his best friend to save him from the code or let Dr. Hess do whatever she wants to him and knowing her, she'd make Ketch do whatever she decided on. He did the right thing. He saved him from the code by obeying the code. It was his only option that would save Mick and not make him just as sadistic as Dr. Hess. Sam nor Cas will never have the capability to care about Mick the way Ketch did and still does. Evidence? Tell me that this does not look familiar?

Can't get a good view of the suit but you can claerly see who he modeled it after. So, please, Ketch haters, tell me I'm wrong.

The pressing need for skilled workers has been underscored by the 1,051,000 job vacancies recorded in the UK in May 2023, as reported by the Office for National Statistics. Nearly a quarter of these vacancies resulted from skills shortages, emphasizing the significance of targeted interventions.

Gillian Keegan, the Education Secretary, highlighted the vital role of skilled workers in propelling organizations forward, drawing an analogy to driving with the handbrake on in the absence of these skills. With over 200 delegates representing various sectors like engineering, aerospace, digital technology, retail, and environmental management, the conference offers a platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration. Participants, including apprentices, T Level students, individuals pursuing Higher Technical Qualifications, and Skills Bootcamp participants, will share their experiences, highlighting the benefits of government skill programs. The event, delivered in partnership with World Skills UK, showcases the participation of skilled UK professionals in the world's largest competitive skills showcase. Previous winners of World Skills events will also be present to engage in discussions and share their invaluable experiences.

By amassing a critical mass of expertise, the Business Connect - Skills for Growth conference aims to inspire business leaders and stimulate economic growth. Google's Senior Director and MD for Technology, Media, Telecoms & Apps, David Black, emphasized the significance of digital skills in boosting productivity and unlocking economic opportunities. Black expressed delight in collaborating with the government to share expertise and address the UK's skills gap, leveraging their extensive reach across the country to train and equip individuals for success in their businesses and careers. Amazon's VP and UK Country Manager, John Boumphrey, stressed the vital role of skills investment in business success and employee satisfaction. Recognizing the need for collaboration among the public, private, and education sectors, Boumphrey emphasized the importance of creating initiatives and pathways to nurture the workforce of the future. Amazon's efforts include offering apprenticeships, retraining opportunities, and improved access to work for underrepresented individuals. Ian Muldowney, Chief Operating Officer of BAE Systems Air Sector, highlighted the crucial role of apprenticeships in ensuring a pipeline of skilled talent that strengthens their workforce and supports UK sovereign capabilities. Drawing from personal experience as a former apprentice, Muldowney underscored the significance of maintaining next-generation skills and ingenuity through apprenticeship programs. Nick Roberts, CEO of Travis Perkins plc and Construction Leadership Council Industry Sponsor for People & Skills, stressed the magnitude of the skills gap in the construction industry and its impact on the UK economy. Roberts emphasized the need for diverse and skilled workforces, outlining the Construction Leadership Council's plan to create entry routes for high-skilled, well-paid jobs. He emphasized the importance of partnership with the government to deliver this plan and foster a thriving built environment. Representatives from KPMG UK, PwC, Thames Water, Severn Trent, Virgin Atlantic, Manchester Airports Group (MAG), and other notable organizations echoed the sentiments of driving upskilling, fostering diversity, and investing in the future talent pool. These sentiments were aligned with the government's emphasis on expanding apprenticeship schemes, supporting T-Level students, and providing access to career opportunities.
