Notes (PLEASE read/Acknowledge!): - This is an A.M.V about Aro-Ace!HERSHEL + (Demi?)Aro-Ace!LUKE as platonic friendship/love. [Luke might also lean 'alterous'; especially if "paired" with Marina in post-P.L. Ani-verse*. *May still not be viewed by me as fully "romantic" Depending, and even their relation I mainly interpret in a very Queer-platonic sense] Klaus I generally head-canon as (overall intended) Queer but Klaus' identity is also very "its complicated" / Aro-Ace specific leaning by the end of this, since Klaus doesn't generally get much time to even "discover" such about themself in canon; so at the opening moments Klaus is more in "Questioning" stage and likely even considers self Cis-Het, Cis-gender, Peri-sex etc. - The song was originally by an Xtian singer singing about what was very likely more likely a deeply "religious" type of love, which is also semi-included here (and yes, it's Important for understanding the context), but since I'm, you know, a Jew, I've modified the interpretation somewhat for myself / my A.M.V (Klaus probably thinks Klaus is Xtian at one point and its also affecting Klaus through the P.L.3 narrative and the whole A.M.V.) Professor Layton and the Spectre’s Call!! I actually discovered ordering the game from the UK with shipping was actually cheaper than ordering the American version of the game, there were no major differences that I could tell as they still had the original English voice actors.

I enjoyed this game!! Not my top favorite installment but I still had a great time and loved the new characters. The puzzles were well designed and had nice scaled difficulty and the mini games were really neat too. The Eternal Diva references were so blatant lmfao but I’m excited for Miracle Mask! I was also super exhausted when writing the summary so sorry there’s so many errors and I use the word fun a million times ToT

Summary

This was such a fun origin story for Luke and Layton. Very much a classic Layton game with world ending machinery and gorgeous environment design. I really liked both Emmy and Descole, there’s a more serious undertone than with Don Paolo as the main villain (even though I do love Don Paolo). Emmy is amazing!! I was afraid she would be sidelined like Flora was but I’m glad to she stands her ground and does what she wants to do. I alos like how we got to go on our own adventure as her to London, she’s a character that doesn’t need to rely on Hershel to solve everything. Meeting Luke was great, loved his blank stare. It was fun seeing his origins and how Clark and Hershel knew each other. I’m curious how the prequels will play into the New World of Steam, especially now that Luke’s family have stories and sprites (unlike in the original trilogy). Loved the ACAB story, v nice to play while I’m still so mad at what’s happening to university students currently. Descole was so fun, I am obsessed with his outfit and personality. Unfortunately I was spoiled on who he is but I’m very excited to learn more. I think similar to Ace Attorney, the fourth installment is that last game in the classic 2D style, which is sad but PLvsPW makes me very hopeful about 3D Layton. The overall story was fun, I really liked the sub plot about the Ravens - that was really fun (i was so tired writing this omfg). I wish we got a little more backstory on the rich guy who died, I feel like there’s more to the story. OO I loved the little episodes, especially the one about Chelmey. They added a lot of fun context and gave more life to the NPCs. Such a fun and classic Layton game, I can’t wait to play Miracle Mask! (And read the light novels). This wasn’t my favorite Layton game but I still really loved it and had a great time and loved the puzzles — that’s all I want from PL!

WHAT THE FUCK.

I used a different save on my HD UK mobile version of Curious Village in order to speedrun through it, solve as little puzzles as possible, and then see Granny Riddleton as early as I could. I wanted to get the puzzle lore. AND BOY DID I GET PUZZLE LORE OH MY GOD.

I cannot believe my shitpost guess was actually right on the money (or at least close enough) and I did not even have this scene in mind to just, y’know, ACTUALLY CEMENT IT AS CANON.

I am shook

(PS: The last image with the bottles was a screenshot I took from a random playthrough on Youtube, because apparently in the mobile version they replaced the cute bottle lore with a list >:c)

ANYWAY I cannot wait to get there in the actual playthrough, this is going to be a TREAT to study the Japanese and US versions to compare with.

Quick run-through of what these screenshots teach us:

Vines growing on a house is apparently not normal (or rather, letting the vines grow is unusual). In my shitpost theory, the explanation was that since puzzles are made of random stuff such as dust, dead leaves etc, unclean and/or untidy places are more likely to have puzzles appear naturally.

Puzzles can literally either appear out of the blue or move of their own accord. “I could’ve sworn there was nothing there a minute ago” means that either the puzzle just poofed into existence while Luke was not looking, or the puzzle just moved on its own and decided to settle itself within the door’s lock. By the way, did I forget to say that this is a SLIDING BLOCK PUZZLE? That APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE?

Layton being unfazed by Granny Riddleton being clairvoyant shows that the distinction between what is normal and what is not in this world is VERY skewed compared to our world’s vision of normal. Clark and Luke being able to talk to animals? Unusual, but eh, relatively mundane. Granny Riddleton saying that there are many fortune-tellers with actual powers over there, but that having power over puzzles is a lot more impressive than predicting the future? Yeah, checks out. An ancient civilisation capable of actual magic, prehistoric manatees, puzzles being eldritch abominations you can find at any corner? Pfsh, classic. But NOW, an entire village populated only with robots? Unheard of.

(Little theory edit: Calling it now. Fortune-tellers who can “see a few days into the future” were somehow able to subconsciously or somewhat consciously communicate with the Illusory Forest and lost all their powers after the end of Azran Legacy. It was less than a year before CV so it would still be relevant for Granny Riddleton to mention it.)

(Another point that was brought by the lovely @alto-tenure​ on Discord: Perhaps the actual reason why Layton and Luke are so surprised about the St. Mystere inhabitants being robots and having so many puzzles around is because (direct quote) A. “Most of the puzzles in the shack wouldn’t be hidden puzzles, they would be puzzles given by the NPCs. Maybe that’s the reason a village of puzzle robots is so unbelievable—the idea that someone could replicate the puzzle generation process…”, and (direct quote again) B. “Given our current concept of what puzzles are, they are very much something that more pop up around people than get made. And in-universe, they wouldn’t really have a clue about what makes a puzzle, just that they exist. So the fact that Bruno managed to figure out how to get his robots to make puzzles—or at least facilitate the process—would be very difficult to believe.”)

(And yet another point brought this time by @multiversal-madness​, on Discord as well: “What if puzzles can just, stick themselves to paper. Like the paper is not just part of the puzzle, but they can just choose to rest on the paper. I said it as a joke earlier but they do seem pretty content to just sit in Hershel’s puzzle index, and at Granny Riddleton’s, there are wrapped bits of paper in the bottles. Imagine if they don’t only sell/make puzzle compartment things, but journal/notebook things where puzzles can sit on their own pages. Granny Riddleton just goes the extra mile and gets them not only their own sheet of paper, but their own bottles and puts those bottles in their own little puzzle house lol” —— To which, I personally replied that this was the idea I had specifically for Curious Village’s first puzzle! The map puzzle was pretty much a puzzle resting on the map itself, and going “solve me if you want me to move and let you see the actual map.”)

Puzzles are self-conscious enough to take decisions such as agreeing to stay with her or not. They also live in a little house, as if they could have their own little life too. Also, we should knock on the door before visiting, it would be rude to intrude and disturb them uninvited.

Granny Riddleton keeps other stuff as well aside from our puzzles. Either they are other puzzles, or other things altogether (which are probably just as weird).

She also keeps the puzzles (at least Layton and Luke’s puzzles) inside of jars. One per jar exclusively, because do you remember what I said about keeping multiple puzzles in the same confined space?

(Ok no but fr this is my incredibly biased headcanon and I will stick to it no matter what)

Exhibit A: Puzzle Hyeprfixation. Yeah this guy likes puzzles but it kinda crosses into hyperfixation territorry when he stops in his tracks at inconvenient moments to bring up random puzzles he heard one time. Neurotypical? I think NOT

Exhibit B: Messy office. Every character comments on how messy he is like this mf needs an assistant AND an apprentice just so his office doesn't end up looking like a warzone.

Exhibit C: Journal. Ok yes it's a game mechanic and neurotypical people can have journals too but like i imagine him writing everything down because if not he WILL forget what he was doing

Exhibit D: Hyperfocus. This... this one doesn't have much to do with canon I just see him hyperfocusing on puzzles/when he mcgyvers random bullshit out of spare parts he finds lying around/doing actual archaeology things (i think i remember seeing dialogue that supports this in Last Specter but i don't rember)

the love "triangle" drama with Claire is toned down a lot more because they’re all friends. no don paolo villain awakening. (and just. a lot less misogyny. they're chill about it.)

the Randall-Clark friendship is just. Clark getting out the metaphorical spray bottle for when Randall is about to do something impulsive

Des is keeping an eye out for Randall because a) Randall is Not Subtle about his desire to study the Azran and b) he's Hershel's best friend c) Targent almost certainly already keeps an eye on Randall because of item A and Des does not want Hershel to be threatened by them

layton is still a puzzle solving professor he's just an engineer instead of an archeologist. the rest of him hasn't really changed

I want to say that Claire gets to live because well. Yeah. but I don't think the career change would affect that too much :( maybe I'll figure it out but for now assume that goes the same :(((

Layton definitely picks up on the fact that everyone in St. Mystere are robots faster than in canon

I think Randall and Layton would go to Misthallery together for the events of LS. Luke has three dads now.

Randall and Clark are coworkers in the lab, so Emmy is still Layton's assistant because Targent has trouble getting her into the archeology lab

(Randall has very limited interest in being a teacher. He'd only become a professor if it got him more funding for his expeditions)

Des ends up reaching out to Randall post-Eternal Diva because the ruins are near Stansbury

So Celeste or Cece as Claire called her, is the younger one I’d say late 20s/maybe early 30s or maybe younger since it could be a larger age gap between siblings? whilst Claire got the fathers ginger genes she got their mothers brunette genes (cause no they are not twins)

Celeste is a forensic scientist who worked closely on the case before it became a lost one, hence the reason she knows something is up with Claire’s death.

Working with future Luke (she knows he’s Clive but doesn’t know what he’d been planing) to uncover what truly happened that day and to hopefully get her justice.

You find her first on the street that leads to the casino before you have to record Bostro’s voice for the gate to Chinatown.

Clive recognises then asks her what she’s doing there near the casino.

FL: Ah yes I just recognised an old friend of mine, I’ll have to say hello.

FL: How are you, is everyone alright?

C: (nodding) Yes, everyone is fine. We’re slowly getting to the bottom of this blasted mystery I suppose.

C: I’m Celeste, it’s a pleasure to meet you both. Such a shame it’s under harsh circumstances otherwise I’d be a bit more carefree.

Anyway I must go now, I’ve got lots to do and so little time to do it in heh.

FL: Stay safe Celeste.

C: Of course, same goes for you Luke.

LA: She seemed to be in quite the hurry, any idea why?

L: Yeah, Celeste looked really tired too she must be working herself to the bone!

FL: Yes, Celeste is one of the few detectives my London has. She’s always working hard to keep everyone here safe.

Yeah she’s the detective figure in future London , Clive admires her determination and ability to smile even though the world seems against her finding the truth and bringing it to life.

Celeste and Future Luke have worked together on several occasions they act like siblings most have noticed.

There’s teasing, rough play fights between them and Celeste loves to tease Him about his potential crush on a young lady named Meg.

Hershel recognises the name Celeste from somewhere and it hits him this could potentially be Claire’s sister “Cece” as she nicknamed her

He specifically remembers Claire telling him she was a forensic scientist for Scotland Yard and barely came to visit her anymore.

When he meets Celeste again he does try to pry the information out of her but she skilfully dodges it until the end where she tells him the truth.

They do eventually bond over there love of Claire and have tea often when hersh visits Scotland Yard.

I like to think that Hershel and Henry were friends back in Stansbury. I feel like Henry was done dirty as an attempt to make him more suspicious by making him stand-offish towards Hershel or making it seem like they didn’t talk much. Idk maybe I’m reading the interactions wrong but I like the Stansbury gang to all be good friends.

Also Rachel was where Descole and Hershel got their ingenuity and inventiveness. She could make machines and such like Descole can or could make tools/‘vehicles’ out of random things like Hershel can. To add to this Leon knows nothing about machinery, something will be on fire whenever he tries to fix anything.

Professor Layton/Adventure Time crossover

Hershel takes the place of Simon and is the archeologist that found the enchiridion, bought the crown and was slowly driven insane by it. In the present day he steals puzzles from all across Ooo.

He thought he had scared his fiancé Claire (replacing Betty) away the first time he put on the crown, but in reality she jumped through a time portal to find a way to fix future Hershel and also went a bit crazy when she gained magic.

Luke was part human, part demon (presently vampire king or Duke) ward of Hershel, his parents had been human but one of his ancestors on his fathers side had been a demon and those traits had laid mostly dormant until the mushroom war happened, only showing themselves through his ability to talk to animals. Hershel was the one to find and look after him after the mushroom war until he had to leave when the crown pushed him too far.

Where did you get the idea of your URL from?

Oh it was AAAAAAAGES ago. When I first made my blog my url was Pokegal1920 and then I realized I 1. Hated having numbers in it (I literally keysmashed it, these numbers don't mean shit to me) and 2. I didn't. Post about pokemon.

I asked for suggestions once and I forget who but someone brought up that Hershel (as in Hershel Layton as in Professor Layton my favorite game series ever) sounded kinda like Hershey and suggested I do a pun based off of Hershey Kisses and do Hershel Kisses

In all honesty I wasn't super psyched about it (kissing? 😳) but I couldn't even do it cause that was taken alsgfhSJFGSJG so I went more generic and just did chocolate

It's so funny for two specific reasons too. First is people who don't know me default to calling me Hershel now and it just makes me think of Professor Layton c: second is I don't even like chocolate that much aksgfjSKFGSJG I'm a fruit gummy girlie at heart
