I've been poking at the GW2 fic and it's at seven pages now. I'm not sure how interesting those seven pages are, but it's fun, anyway.

Here's a bit:

“Damn it,” said Helen. “I’ll tell Jack. We’ll need a new place, and you’d better make more use of those illusions.” She paused. “I’m sorry about Debs. I know it was complicated.” Gwen just nodded. It had been complicated. They might not have spoken for a year, but Deborah was still her sister. She remembered how fiercely Deborah had protected her after their grandfather died and his landlord took everything, then threw them out. Gwen had been nine, Deborah only two years older.  Even before then, Deborah looked after her. A year prior to their grandfather’s death, their parents had returned to Ebonhawke to fight for Ascalon, saying they’d bring Deborah and Gwen home once Ascalon was free. But it never happened, and eventually their grandfather admitted that Bran and Mara were dead.

brandon karstark’s eyes flicked towards morgan wylde, catching the faint twitch of his fingers against the goblet. the stormlander’s steady composure betrayed little, but brandon knew better than to mistake still waters for calm. the quiet hum of the hall wrapped around them, the fire casting long shadows across the stone. “ye ask if i know the stormlands?” brandon’s voice rumbled low, the northern accent thick as the winter winds that howled through the north.

“aye, i know them. not from wanderin’ yer hills or feelin’ yer rain, but from knowin’ what it means to be forgotten. to feel the weight o’ the crown bear down, heavier than the storms ye weather. and yer closer to us northerners than any other.”

he paused, his grey eyes narrowing as he studied the flicker of the firelight across morgan’s face. “experience teaches a man plenty, wylde, but it’s the sharp eye that keeps him breathin’. i’ve seen enough to know what happens when pride turns brittle, and we've seen a whole kingdom crumble ‘cause they didn’t see the cracks ‘til it was too late.” brandon shifted slightly, the leather of his gloves creaking as his fingers tightened briefly around the edge of the table.

“rebellion, ye say? it’s a fool’s game against a king like jaehaerys. man’s temperamental, too quick to the sword. he’ll rip the stormlands out by the roots if ye give him cause. but there’s another way. nightsong—it needs to be yours again. it’s a start. a symbol, aye, but symbols carry weight.”

he leaned forward, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. “ye want to make a statement? then do it right. refuse the tax. all of ye, together. they can’t punish ye all without cripplin’ themselves. it’s not rebellion—it’s a stand. one they can’t ignore, but one they can’t call treason neither.”

his gaze darkened, shadows deepening the lines of his face. “things got complicated with the king. we weren’t on the same page no more. what we wanted, what we thought best for the north—it didn’t align. so, it ended, as these things often do. sometimes, partin’ ways is the only way forward. and aye, it’s a lesson, one i reckon ye might need. know when to stand, and know when to step away, ‘fore the whole thing falls to ruin.” he sat back, the firelight glinting in his eyes. “ye’ve got a storm to weather, wylde."

morgan’s eyes remained fixed on the fire as brandon spoke, the flickering flames casting shifting shadows across his face. he listened, unmoving, until the northern lord’s words fell away into the quiet hum of the hall. his fingers, still wrapped around the stem of his goblet, twitched slightly, the only betrayal of the thoughts churning beneath his composed exterior.

his voice, though quieter than the karstark’s, carried the steady cadence of the stormlands. “ye speak of the stormlands like ye know them well. like ye’ve walked our hills and heard the rain poundin’ against stone. it’s rare for a man outside our borders to see it so clear.” he paused, the faintest crease forming on his brow. “where does that come from, brandon? experience, or just a sharp eye for the lay of the land?”

the firelight caught the lines of morgan’s face as he leaned back slightly, the movement slow and thoughtful. “yer words, they’re not wrong. the pride of my folk, it’s a strength. aye, it holds us together. but it can turn brittle under strain. these taxes—this unrest—they’re like embers, aye? it’ll only take one gust to set the whole forest ablaze.”

he traced a finger along the rim of his goblet, his tone softening but not losing its edge. “a statement, ye said. bold enough to be felt but not so bold as to bring ruin. that’s a fine line to tread, and it’s easy to stumble. we’ve no desire to see heads on pikes, not ours, nor anyone’s, but the weight keeps buildin’.” he hesitated, the weight of his words clear in the way his shoulders set. “if the stormlands stand together, we might weather the gale. but fractured? we’ll be swept away.”

morgan tilted his head slightly, his expression thoughtful, almost searching. “if ye were still wearin’ the pin, how would ye advise me? or is yer advice now the same as it would’ve been then?” his gaze lingered on brandon’s, quiet but steady. “because ye speak like a man who’s seen what comes of makin’ the wrong move.”

the lord's words hung in the fire-warmed air, tempered steel wrapped in quiet intrigue. his gaze shifted back to brandon, sharp with curiosity. “so what of you, karstark? hand o’ the king no longer. did ye jump, or were ye pushed? if it’s treachery ye smell, what made ye step away? i’d wager the truth of that tale might hold lessons for me yet.”

On making a Welsh version of the entire story of King Arthur:

No Lancelot and No Affair. PERIOD. And absolutely no compromise or cheating on this one: you cannot turn anyone else (coughBediverecough) into a Lancelot analogue. You must sacrifice the Love Triangle completely - no "duty vs. love" drama. You're going to have make do without that conceit. You must exercise your own creativity and forge a different dramatic conflict for Arthur and Gwenhwyfar, if at all.

Supplementary to the above: Divorce is legal.

Arthur is at the forefront. Sometimes, Cai, Gwalchmai and Bedwyr is the focus of a particular adventure, but Arthur is a Man of Action, who often outdoes his own warriors. And in particular, he may not even be a King - he may even just be a military chief (Wleddig, Ameraudur or Dux Bellorum), freeing him up to rove around.

Giants, not fairies, as the primary supernatural race Camelot interacts with. Next to that, Saints and Deities come afterwards.

Note that Queen Guinevere herself is the daughter of a giant.

On the legal side: Celtic Law is Tort Law - a weregild system is at play, known as Saraad (Insult/Honor Price) and Galanas (Injury/Homicide Price). Livestock as a measure of wealth. Inheritance system is Gavelkind (although tribal politics may come into play. See Tanistry).

Emphasis on Poetry, Song and Poetic Speech. Englyns are recommended. Bards as serious authority figures.

Be liberal with the supernatural. Mystical items are always fought over and Knights have cyneddf, or mystical abilities.

The Grail Quest has to be whole sale rewritten and given a new mythos: it's either "The Raid on the Otherworld" where the story is about the capture of a mystical Cauldron (Preiddu Annwfn). AND/OR. It's the Peredur version of Perceval, involving a Severed Head instead of a Grail - Maybe its Bran the Blessed himself! - and possibly a battle with the "Nine Sorceresses"

Exceptions to the "No Affair" rule: Medraut and Melwas. The former requires commitment to Traitor!Guinevere and the latter ends with Arthur winning and taking back Guinevere, whether Melwas lives or not.

The Fall of Camelot - There 3 options for how it should unfold without Lancelot: a) defaulting towards Historia Regum Britanniae's version of events. b) the Gwenhwyfach feud. And c) Non-Traitor Medraut ending. The first, similar to the No Affair exception, requires commitment to Traitor!Guinevere. The second involves establishing Gwenhwyfach as a character in her own right. The third and last is the most difficult: the writer must concieve a sufficiently satisfying third party as an opponent for Arthur and Mordred for a tragic last stand.

No Incest. Medraut remains Arthur's Nephew.

No Villain!Morgan

Optional for the above: Iddog Cordd Prydain as an instigator for the hostilities between Arthur and Medraut

As an extention of the "No Lancelot" rule, No Lady of the Lake and No Galahad either.

Arthur assumes the throne through normal means - No Sword in the Stone or Sword from the Lake. Kings Lot and Urien are allies all they way. Excalibur/Caledfwlch is part of a set of Three Holy Weapons, the others being Rhongomyniad and Carnwennan.

Exceptions to the "No Affair" rule: Edern ap Nudd as Guinevere's lover. Highly unrecommended, either for potentially establishing a Love triangle (defeating the whole purpose of removing Lancelot) and for potentially resulting in Arthur's early, non-Camlann death.

Trystan and Essyllt potentially do not end in tragedy (Total omission of Brittany, Isolde White Hands and the Black Sails motif) (Writer's choice). Although Mark could still treacherously kill them both, ala Prose Tristan.

King Mark as potentially Conomor the Cursed.

I wrapped up the finale of the "Speaker of the Dead" phase of "The Orders of Tyria," complete with a very important choice!

When Gwen reached the Salma District, Josir was still agitated about the possible loss of Queen Jennah, "the last of the royal line." Ihan hinted that she's not, actually (????? is this ever explained?), but that she is critical to the peace with the Charr.

I think that's the most urgent point for Gwen. Her parents were fervent Ascalonian partisans who left her and Deborah with their grandfather to go fight against the Charr in the Fields of Ruin, which is where they died. Deborah resented it (all the more after they ended up on the streets), and though proud of their people, became committed to Kryta. But Gwen is more sympathetic to their parents and Ebonhawke looms large for her. So the possibility of losing it would have a particular oomph for her—she accepts the peace, painful though its concessions may be, because it means the survival of Ebonhawke and human Ascalon, but also because it makes her parents' choice and deaths mean something.

Hiroki, meanwhile, remarked that Kryta would lose hope without Queen Jennah. Maaaaybe? There's a lot of dissent tbh.

Logan, predictably, wanted to rush off to protect Jennah, but Gwen quite justifiably pointed out that they can't just think of Jennah's welfare. If Kellach leads his army to Divinity's Reach, he'll devastate every town from Lion's Arch to Divinity's Reach. IIRC, none of the orders' plans actually account for this in the end, but it's been a long time.

Yeah, I know. Everyone knows.

This time, at any rate, each order had a plan. Hiroki wanted to go in with brute force, Josir wanted to neutralize the threat with the Priory's enchantment, and Ihan wanted to lure Kellach into a trap. Each order also wanted Gwen to formally join their ranks, which Logan strongly encouraged: "You've been a boon to Kryta, but you can do more with one of the orders."

Since the orders are working to fight the dragons and not specifically concerned with Kryta, I feel like this actually represents character growth for him.

He gave a rundown of each order, including the hilariously in-character line "I have no use for libraries," and a kind of tepid "They certainly know a lot of secrets" about the Order of Whispers. He's such a Vigil type that it's honestly funny to see him trying to be neutral.

But as one might guess from the user name, Gwen chose the Order of Whispers!

an ode to the destined is an arthurian retelling. morgan was raised on the isle of apples (avalon) by nyneve, along with eight of her adopted sisters. when one of the original high priestesses informs her that the veil between worlds is fraying, morgan must travel to camelot and defeat the source, king uther's purge.

the subtle art of counting crows is a rewrite of my hsc project. based in the town of wrenwood, three teenagers die in unrelated accidents on january the thirteenth. only they don't stay dead. against all odds, bran wren, melissa kennedy, and clancy culpa find themselves opening their eyes to feburary 4th with a more than three week memory gap. found family shenanigans ensue.

Ok, first, let me just say WOW because you have the coolest page and I love the theme. This is.... so cool.Ok, but yes, back to the question. I was asking about horses because, yeah, I ride occasionally, but I don't really know cool horse terms. Trying to write about them and didn't know if there's good lingo for such. Or like, long term traveling no-no's. Obviously food, water, and distance, but if there were other tricks of the trade. Have any pointers?

thank you!! i’m absolutely in love with the lay-out of it, and how the theme ended up looking! i wanted something new and figured, hey, why not fully embrace the video game aspect of my wip? c:

i’m always down for horse chatter, no matter what it’s about! i’ve been working on horse farms since i was nine - which sounds strange to say, i realize, but i used to do farm work in exchange for lessons, and then it just evolved to paid farm work, haha. so, yeah, knowing how amazing your writing always is, the thought of you doing some horse related scenes just makes me incredibly happy and excited?

for long term traveling inspiration, i would check out endurance rides! it used to be primarily dominated by Arabians and half-Arabian breeds, but a larger variety becomes prominent in the circuit every year. we’ve had Morgan’s and quarter horses win the Nationals before and everything.

outside of food, water, and distance, some of the biggest things that i see forgotten about (but might not be relevant to your writing!) would be the soundness of a horse, and whether they’re still being groomed. and all this rambling is just! me guessing at the setting and situation! so it may or may not be helpful but - well, i like rambling about horses, so i hope you don’t mind! i’m mostly going under the assumption that by long distance you mean cross country, or something close to that, spanning several days or at least a week’s worth of riding. c:

depending on the setting, the thought of grooming a horse during a long distance travel might come across as strange. but if the same sweaty blanket, cushion, or saddle pad is left on the horse’s back for an extended amount of time, the sweat and the friction can rub sores - which then make the horse irate, and sometimes can even result, depending on the temperament of the horse, in being bucked off. 

solution for a desperate time - hop off, undo the girth on one side, slide the saddle back onto the haunches or up onto the neck (if a well trained horse, otherwise if the horse is young or antsy, the saddle may need to come off completely) and take a dry rag to the coat. if a hard brush or curry is available and time allows, a quick rub down wouldn’t hurt, but a dry rag will work if time and supplies are limited.

then flip the pad over, so the dry side is against the horse and tack back up. if time is extra limited, just flip over the saddle pad and skip the rag.

the other big thing is that a horse can easily injure itself on a trail. i love them, but half the time i feel like horses are held together by used chewing gum and some old string? so even if your horse doesn’t actually injure itself during the story, it might be something to keep in mind. they can pull leg muscles, bruise their frog, damage their hoof, and even cut their coronary band if the foliage is particularly thick and thorny!

so if you’re looking for extra drama, just nudge the horse into a situation that will leave it lame for a little bit, haha!

and some of favorite horse things that i love to include when writing about horses!

*when you’ve been riding for a really long time and your back is starting to hurt so you lean forward, draping yourself over the horse’s neck and it’s sweaty and dirty but the smell of horse is a comfort so you both just stand their silently for a few moments

*after a really hard ride but you can’t get off just yet so you do stretches in the saddle, like bending backwards so your shoulders are on the rump of the horse, and bending your legs in weird ways because they’re cramped

*a horse that’s too scared to walk through tall grass on its own but trusts you so much that as long as you walk in front of it, he’ll follow behind you

*horses playing with each other! halter tag, anyone?

*the specific sound of horse hooves hitting the ground, especially when it’s hard packed earth, especially if there are a lot of them

*hot horse breath on your hand when you give the horse a treat or hold up a bucket of water for them to drink out of

*that one horse who fills its mouth up with water and then purposefully dumps it on the rider’s shoulder

*the sheer exhilaration that comes from galloping a horse through a wide, open expanse where there’s nothing keeping you confined and the wind is cutting against your face and your heart is pounding and it’s like the both of you are the same being

*if you’re going long distance and are able to plan ahead of time, the pack you bring needs more than just food for the horse. pack smart and light! hay string is invaluable. so is vet-wrap (or an ace bandage swiped from the med bay) and duck tape. those three things can fix nearly any problem that occurs during your travels.

some facts from my personal life experience!

*did you know that you can fix a horse’s injured hoof with a preemie diaper and some duck tape

*did you know that you can fix their knee the same way

*did you know that you can make a sweat wrap for a horse’s swollen leg using clingwrap

*braiding a horse’s tail all the way to the tip is actually really ineffective for a horse that’s outside for any length of time. if you braid it down halfway, they still have the loose hair at the bottom to use as a fly swatter!

*horse bites are incredibly painful and not just when they nip your hand. i still have scars and tissue damage from being bit on the shoulder and thrown across the ten foot stall by a horse that was in pain and lashing out at me. it turned into a massive hematoma and i couldn’t lift my arm up past my breasts for almost three months

*getting kicked by a horse is incredibly painful but certainly not a death sentence and might not even leave you out of the field for a long time. i was double barreled out in the field one day, got the stitches put into my chin, had x-rays taken, and then went to finish my day’s worth of work. 

*that being said it absolutely can be really awful. my first trainer was thrown by a horse and landed the wrong way, so it completely shattered her arm and she ended up needing five surgeries. my second trainer was kicked in the face by a horse and it ended up breaking off parts of her teeth.

*night riding is asking for trouble, because the eyes of a horse have a hard time distinguishing things in heavy shadow. it’s why they tend to freak out over seemingly little things; the cones in their eyes just aren’t meant for distinguishing things in the dark.

*if your horse has never seen a cow or donkey before, it will terrify them. 

*ive never met a horse who didn’t like gatorade and that really has no relevance to anything, and probably is no use to anyone, but it’s still something that i wanted to share! i’ve worked with over 500 separate horses at my various farm jobs, and i’ve never met a single horse that turned down gatorade when i offered it to them

*rice bran tastes like vanilla cookies

*bute powder might smell like fruit loops but it does not taste like fruit loops

*sweet feed is edible for humans but the molasses gives it a very bitter flavor. alternatively, non-sweet feed kind of tastes like you’re eating dry bran cereal

i don’t know if any of this is even slightly useful to you, but it sure was fun to write up! and i am always up for talking about horses or answering any questions that you (or anyone else) might have! i’ve basically worked in every aspect of the horse industry at some point or another, and while i’m not a specialist by any means, i am most certainly a jack of all trades when it comes to farm work, barn work, and horse work

Hair Hues of Radiata Stories

Here is the complete list of all the Radiata Stories characters (both recruitable and NPCs) taken from Fuck Yeah Radiata Stories​ and sorted by hair colour. There are a couple things I want to add. 

First off, while most of the characters fit neatly into one of the eight categories, there are some characters whose hair colour was more ambiguous (i.e. dark blonde vs. light brown hair). I placed them where I thought they were best fit.

Black and blue are the same category because some of the black-haired characters like Cairn have a bluish tint and technically speaking, black pigment is really just a dark blue anyway.

There are some characters who are either bald or have their head covered so you can’t tell the colour of their head hair. Instead of classifying them as bald or unknown, I classified them based on the colour of their facial hair and eyebrows. This is why Dynas is in with the brunettes instead of the baldies.

While I could have made a separate category for pink hair, I ultimately decided it should just belong with red/orange because pink is just light red anyway.

Overall, there is a wide, diverse spectrum of hair colours and not all characters fit perfectly into their respective category. So if you think certain characters are miscategorised, well that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it.

26 FOODS THAT MELT LOVE HANDLES

Whether you call it a spare tire or a muffin top or just “my junk,” the ring of fat that collects around the top of your waist can ruin the line of a perfect dress, make even the coolest T-shirt look schlumpy, and generally make you feel F-A-T fat.

Fortunately, having love handles is more of a style risk than a health risk. Unlike belly fat, which infiltrates your internal organs and is linked to everything from diabetes to heart disease to liver failure, that spare tire is made of subcutaneous fat, a type of fat located just below the skin, and which just sort of sits there; in fact, some studies suggest subcutaneous fat may even help protect us from certain health issues. But that doesn’t mean we have to love the way they look—or live with them.

OAT BRAN

If you like to start your day with oatmeal, it’s time to give yourself an upgrade. While oatmeal is a terrific breakfast, with 8 grams of fiber and 12 grams of protein per cup, oatbran is a whole other level. It packs a whopping 18 grams of fiber and 20 grams of protein, for the same number of calories. (What’s the difference between the two? Oatbran is made from the outer husks of the oat, while oatmeal is made from the inner portion.) Don’t screw it up by dumping brown sugar or syrup on it. Low-fat milk and cinnamon are the best accompaniments. Love oats?

SWEET POTATOES

The king of slow carbs (meaning they’re digested slowly and keep you feeling fuller and energized longer), sweet potatoes were a breakfast staple for Morgan Minor, a 24-year-old firefighter from Coalinga, California, who dropped 7 pounds in her first week of Zero Belly. Also known as “forbidden rice” because only emperors were allowed to eat it, black rice may be the cheapest source of antioxidants around. According to the American Chemical Society, black rice has more antioxidants than a spoonful of blueberries, with more fiber, more vitamin E, and less sugar. More antioxidants means less inflammation, which means less fat storage for you.

WHITE TEA

White tea works in three distinct ways to help strip away fat from your body. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism showed that white tea can simultaneously boost lipolysis (the breakdown of fat) and block adipogenesis (the formation of fat cells). Another group of researchers found that the tea is also a rich source of antioxidant that triggers the release of fat from the cells and help speed the liver’s ability to turn fat into energy. BLACK BEANS

High in fiber and low in fat, beans are a Zero Belly power food because they’re great source of resistant starch, meaning that they “resist” digestion, sticking around the digestive tract and helping you feel fuller longer. By feeding your healthy gut bugs, beans help your body generate the chemical butyrate, which encourages the body to burn fat as fuel. A study at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center even found that beans can lessen the accumulation of body fat. All beans do the trick, but the darker the bean, the greater its concentration of phytochemicals, which is why black is best.

In one Canadian study, subjects who were supplemented with a type of gut-healthy insoluble fiber called oligofructose not only lost weight but reported less hunger than those who received a placebo. Researchers discovered that the subjects who received the fiber had higher levels of ghrelin—a hormone that controls hunger—and lower levels of blood sugar. Jerusalem artichokes–which are actually the roots of a type of sunflower–are one of the best sources of the fiber. Ogliofructose is also found in onions and leeks, as well as rye and barley.

GUACAMOLE

High in fiber and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, guacamole. A half cup of guac—assuming you didn’t go and blow it by mixing in sour cream or something else that doesn’t belong—gives you more than 7 grams of fiber. For a super quick recipe, mix 1 ripe avocado, the juice of one lime, 2 Tbs chopped fresh cilantro and a pinch or two of sea salt.

TIGER NUTS

No animals were harmed in the making of this food! Tiger nuts are made neither of tigers nor of nuts; they’re actually tubers, which means people with nut allergies can eat them safely. They look a bit like toasted corn kernels and taste kind of like coconut. A serving of 20 tiger nuts delivers 4 grams of fiber for just 60 calories.

CHICKPEA PASTA

With double the protein and four times the fiber of wheat pasta, Banza—made from chickpeas—turns a traditional carb into a muscle-building fat fighter. For anyone avoiding gluten, it’s a better choice than pastas made from corn, rice or potato powder, which are often devoid of any real nutrition.

PEPITAS

It’s the Spanish term for pumpkin seed, and if you consider them just jack o’lantern innards, you’re in for a treat. One ounce of seeds has eight grams of protein — more than an egg or almonds — and is rich in flat-belly nutrients like fiber, zinc and potassium, which are key to muscle building and recovery. Sprinkle them in salads or over oats.

FROZEN PEAS

Looking for a cold, crunchy snack? Keep a bag of peas in the freezer and pour some into a cup for a filling nosh. A cup of peas has 7 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber, and because you pop them a few at a time, they’ll keep your hands and mouth busy, preventing you from seeking out more sinful treats.

RASPBERRIES

Red fruits are an important part of the Zero Belly plan, but even among these nutritional powerhouses, raspberries stand alone as the single best source of insoluble fiber. A study published in the journal Life Sciences found that taking zinc supplements could increase leptin production in obese men by 142 percent! A half-dozen oysters only has 43 calories but provides 21 percent of your RDA of iron—deficiencies of which have been linked to a significant increase in fat gene expression.

DARK CHOCOLATE

A recent study found that antioxidants in cocoa prevented laboratory mice from gaining excess weight and actually lowered their blood sugar levels. And another study at Louisiana State University found that gut microbes in our stomach ferment chocolate into heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory compounds that shut down genes linked to insulin resistance and inflammation. To enhance the effects, try pairing your chocolate with some apple slices: The fruit speeds up the fermentation process, leading to an even greater reduction in inflammation and weight.

EZEKIEL SPROUTED 100% WHOLE GRAIN BREAD

Almonds are among the best dietary sources of vitamin E, packing about 20 milligrams per half cup, and are also high in monounsaturated fats and fiber.

QUINOA

It’s a complete protein, meaning that it contains the complete chain of amino acids that are necessary for muscle building and fat loss. (Brown rice is an incomplete protein.) In a 2015 study in the Journal of Diabetes Investigation, researchers discovered that patients who ingested higher amounts of vegetable protein were far less susceptible to metabolic syndrome (a combination of high cholesterol, high blood sugar, and obesity). It’s also high in the amino acid lysine, which helps you burn fat and maintain healthy bones and skin. According to a study published in the journal Food Chemistry, quinoa has the highest level of betaine, a chemical that revs your metabolism and actually shuts down the genes that encourage fat to hang around.

GRAPEFRUIT

Like a marathoner stretching before the big run, eating half a grapefruit before a meal can enhance your body’s fat-burning performance. A study published in the journal Metabolism found that this “warm-up” tactic can help whittle your middle—by up to an inch—in just six weeks! The scientists attribute the powerful effects to the grapefruits’ fat-zapping phytochemicals. The fruit can interact negatively with certain medications, so as long as you get the green-light from your M.D, plan to have half of a grapefruit before your morning meal.

WALNUTS

Polyunsaturated fats like those found in walnuts activate genes that reduce fat storage and improve insulin metabolism. At about 13 grams per one-ounce serving, walnuts are one of the best dietary sources. A small Pennsylvania State study found that a diet rich in walnuts and walnut oil may help the body respond better to stress and can also help keep diastolic blood pressure levels down.

TUNA

Tuna or to-not? That is the question. As a primo source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), canned light tuna is one of the best and most affordable fish for weight loss, especially from around your waist! One study in the Journal of Lipid Research showed that omega 3 fatty acid supplementation had the profound ability to turn off fat genes. And while you’ll find two types of fatty acids in cold water fish and fish oils—DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)—researchers say DHA can be 40 to 70 percent more effective than EPA at down regulating fat genes and preventing fat cells from expanding in size.

PURSLANE

What the hell is purslane? While not a common food in most of the U.S., this sour, slightly salty green is often used in Greek and Turkish cooking. You can find it at health food stores throughout the year, and in farmers’ markets in spring and summer, but the most likely place you’ll encounter it is growing in the cracks of your driveway. A weed to most, it was a regular part of Gandhi’s diet, and a mere half cup has more than 1,000 IUs of fat-fighting vitamin A. This might be the cheapest stealth health food in the world!

Eggs are the E in “ZERO BELLY” for a reason: They’re the single best dietary source of a fat-fighting nutrient called choline. But you can improve their fat-fighting powers by choosing omega-3 eggs. I'm wrapping up "The Accusation," after Minister Arton claimed innocence and agreed to surrender himself to the custody of the Shining Blade. Logan sent Gwen off to question Sergeant Hal, a former member of Falcon Company who transferred out and currently patrols eastern Divinity's Reach.

Specifically, he's found in Rurikton, the Ascalonian district of Divinity's Reach. My headcanon is that Gwen spent so much time struggling to survive in the Salma District with her friends that she's unlikely to have participated in the Rurikton community, despite her fierce Ascalonian loyalties.

I imagine her parents were very strong Ascalonian partisans who met in the Vanguard hospital, and ultimately left Gwen and Deborah with the girls' maternal grandfather in DR before rushing off to fight for The Cause in Ascalon and getting themselves killed. Deborah, the older daughter, resented her parents' abandonment and was committed to making a new life in Kryta, while Gwen is more sympathetic to their parents, loathes the Charr with particular fervor, and is curious and eager to see Rurikton and Ebonhawke properly.

But she has other priorities now, so she briefly takes in the lions and memorials as she's hurrying to find Sergeant Hal.

Hal immediately assumes that Gwen is an agent of Tervelan out to kill him, which he figured would happen eventually once he put the pieces together. It's not clear how long it's been since Falcon Company was ambushed, but my impression is a pretty decent while—months, maybe even a year or two. But he must have thought Tervelan was taking his sweet time if so.

Gwen assures him she's from Logan and asks why Tervelan would want him killed, and he immediately opens up and says he was Tervelan's messenger. He wasn't told any details about the messages he carried to the woods or their ultimate recipients, but he figured out that it had something to do with the ambush and transferred out as soon as he could. He thinks another former Falcon, Dansky, might know more. She left the Seraph altogether and joined the Lionguard (who don't even answer to the Krytan government, just the melting pot city-state of Lion's Arch).

So, off to the south to find the Lionguard haven Dansky is posted at these days. It's in the next zone from the entire Queensdale zone outside DR, but I'd be putting distance between me and Tervelan if I were her, too.

Sure enough, as the mission starts, a bunch of bandits attack the haven without even pretending they're there to steal anything. Gwen, level 80 mesmer that she is, didn't have much trouble wiping them out with, well, pink greatsword lasers (mesmer greatsword is the best greatsword, change my mind).

Dansky is fine, but a bit rattled and confused about the aimless attack. Gwen suspects it was directed specifically at taking out Dansky herself to halt Gwen and Logan's investigation (our mystery minister's reach is long, apparently). In any case, the moment Gwen mentions the investigation, Dansky is incredibly relieved to hear that Tervelan is corrupt, as she always suspected.

Dansky was the other messenger back in the day. She carried messages to the Ministry, which seemed to be directed to Minister Arton's office, but she discovered afterwards that the person who received them from her was a total stranger to Arton's people. She survived because she had been injured when Falcon Company was ambushed, and left the Seraph altogether afterwards. Smart, honestly, though maybe reporting all this enormously suspicious information to someone at the time would have been helpful.

At any rate, she tells Gwen where the Falcons were headed when they got ambushed.

It's also possible to get slightly different information after the cut scene. There's an option to threaten her with an accusation of treason (...), request help with a legal matter, or ask for help in a slightly flattering way, the last of which seemed most Gwen's style. Dansky is eager to help—apparently Tervelan would punish the soldiers with "corporal discipline" for ever asking questions and terrorized them into keeping quiet.

She tells Gwen that if any members of the company were taken captive, they'd be sold to local slavers. Although human slaves seem mostly kept by centaurs in general, some of the human bandits trade in captives, so she directs Gwen to a camp that seems in the right general area.

And that concludes "The Accusation"! Onto the finale.
