Milo was pretty sure he'd be fine from the corner. He wasn't dying - and hell, even when he had been he'd still walked a few blocks before he'd blacked out. This wasn't something he voiced though, obviously. Instead just straightening up in the seat with a wince as he shifted to put the Tylenol bottle into the cup holder.
He was content with this being a moment where he quietly got out of the car, Gem said nothing to him and they both pretended it never happened - yet even before the car could fully go into park, the older man was rounding on him.
Immediately he felt his jaw tick slightly, like he was holding in an argument to those words. In a way, he was. Since it felt pretty contradictive for Gem to tell him it wasn't his job to step in for him when he had. Or to say that but also say that he didn't want to see him until he was back and ready. Like he had a say in that. Like he was his... teacher, coach or... parent or brother.
In a way though, Milo really knew what Gem was saying to him. That he couldn't step in for him again - and that if Milo showed up like this again, he would get the shit beat out of him, and maybe next time no one would stop either. Milo had to think that it wasn't so much Gem didn't want to see him at Fight Club as much as it was Gem didn't want to see that.
Nodding his head, Milo fumbled for the seat belt - quickly undoing it and guiding it back as he popped open the door and hopped out with a grimace he was glad only the dark yard in front of him could see. Resting his hand against the door, Milo turned back towards the cab, eying Gem carefully before he finally sighed with another, more defeated, nod. "...Yeah - I.. I know." He relented, fingers tapping against the metal. "...Thanks. I uh - I owe you."
Even if it drew a roll of Gem's eyes, there was a debt owed now. Even if it was just in the form of a beer. Otherwise, he was pretty sure he wouldn't have gotten home tonight.

tfw people dismiss steven universe's queer representation because "they're just sentient rocks" or "they're genderless so it doesn't count as queer romance" but they're completely okay with shipping a girl and her abusive cat sister.

Sebastian was glad that aside from brushing off his hand, he didn't argue. If only because he felt firm on this standpoint, and he would have argued back if his brother refused. Gemmy shouldn't be alone. Not tonight. It wasn't like it was unfamiliar to him anyways, having a brother sleeping close by. Though it was usually Iz or for the most part Elliot.
The last time it had been Gem who'd come to him was so long ago he might've still been in secondary.
While his younger brother looked for something unburned to wear, Sebastian gave him his space and moved to just make sure nothing was still smoldering against the other man's bed, checking the sheets until he was sure Gem was ready before he led the two of them back over the short distance to Sebastian's own room.
His own shirt was pulled off once the door closed behind him, tossed haphazardly against the rim of his laundry as he pulled another on within the moonlit room, his gaze finding Gem's. He offered a gentle squeeze to the man's forearm, careful not to try and startle more flames from his exhausted brother as he moved by him to crawl back into bed.
He shifted all the way to the side, leaving plenty of room for his brother as he tucked his arms under one of the pillows with a soft sigh, waiting to feel the weight settle beside him to signify his brother's presence. Sebastian didn't know if it would work - but for Gem's sake, he hoped it did. That even just for a few hours he could sleep peacefully, unplagued by his worries.
"...buona notte."

Sebastian knew his brother well.
At least well enough to know that yeah sure, meant not a chance in hell. Which was fair, Sebastian was sure he would do the same thing, truly. Yet, just like the loss of touch, it still stung just a tiny bit as Sebastian pulled his own arm back with a small nod. Even if he was expecting it, even if it wasn't a surprise.
"...Course." Sebastian shrugged off easily, moving to grab a bottle of water from the fridge as before he started walking back towards the stairs. "...Just means I'll need you to sign the fake documents I type up."
Which he would - because he'd promised he'd have them on the big man's desk by the next day, and because if Gem wouldn't let him help more than that, then well... At least that was what he could do to help.

Gem lies back, between Scott and Impulse. Their blood still tastes sharp and iron at the back of her throat, which is a little silly, given that it's not like she licked them or something. There's no reason she should taste anything. She just... stabbed them, when they asked her to.
Stabbed them, because they knew they had to go red eventually, and for the sake of the team they wanted her to win.
Stabbed. Scott and Impulse.
Here's the thing: she'd told herself she wouldn't feel guilty, and she'd told herself this ages ago, when she started leading people to the End to see if the dragon would kill them. She told herself she wouldn't feel guilty, because clearly, she wouldn't let these games wear her down the way they do some people. She told herself she wouldn't feel guilty because people like to mistake her for a prey animal when she's a predator, and guilt would give the game away. She told herself she wouldn't feel guilty, because why feel guilty over having fun? It's just a game. A bloody, bloody game. She told herself she wouldn't feel guilty.
She told herself. She told herself.
There's no reason to feel guilty. She enjoyed herself, the rush of blood when running with Pearl, and then the heady feeling of having life, life, life running through her. She's pretty sure, despite being a red name, she has the most life anyone ever has in these games. It makes sense! Life and death are all wrapped up together, and Scott had choked on his own blood before he went down, even though she'd tried to make it quick, and as he gurgled over the injury she'd inflicted she'd felt life running in her and her heart pounding and everything getting dizzy and--
It doesn't matter. They told her to do it. She shouldn't feel guilty. Impulse had smiled at her. It had been a lovely smile. She hadn't known what to make of it.
And she closes her eyes and sees the life leave his.
But she shouldn't feel guilty. She tried to make it quick. Impulse had turned around, told her to do it like killing a chicken, destroying the brain stem so that he doesn't have to feel it, those last few minutes. It's fast. Humane. Like killing a chicken. Almost impersonal, except that he'd been so gentle, and they both had Scott's blood on them, and there was so much blood, and she likes blood. This whole game, that's been the point. She likes blood.
Impulse had died surprisingly bloodless but he'd screamed, for just a moment, because she doesn't actually know how to make it fast and humane, even if it's supposed to be like killing a chicken, and she'd felt--
Felt--
She'd felt good, is the thing. It had felt good, even though he'd taken several blows to bring down, in the end. Even though she hadn't managed to make it quick. Even though, for a moment, he'd been terrified, and then after that, he'd convulsed, twitching on the ground, and she hadn't known if he was able to feel that at all. These are games. They're supposed to be fun. She won't feel guilty, she tells herself. There's no reason to feel guilty.
They told her they loved her, afterwards. Quietly, through actions and words. They told her not to feel guilty. It's in her nature.
One does not blame a lion for biting when it's given meat. It's in their nature.
This is her nature. This is what she is. She knows that now. That's what this has all taught her, this game she's playing. She knows well what she is; everyone will know well what she is, when next they take her in.
And maybe that's why, as she starts laughing, she can't stop from feeling guilty for what will happen next.

Thursday, November 21 — Back to the Future Thread: Write either a flashback or a flashforward thread with another mun! (This could be an existing connection or a connection that could possibly happen 10 years in the future! Should be 10+/- years in the past/future.)
Sebastian remembered when he was first adopted.
It had been an overwhelming experience for a kid who'd lost everything in the rubble of his home and was shipped out of his own country to a place so unfamiliar. It had been terrifying to finally walk into a room with seven other people, of which none spoke the same language he was most comfortable in. It was easy to remember the nights spent sat in the corner of his new 'room', crying and knowing all to well this wouldn't last either. His silence at dinner tables that felt way too loud and unfamiliar, glancing down at food he'd never seen before, flinching at excited conversation or playful jabs. Completely getting lost in translation on more than one occasion despite the Morey Parents doing their best to bridge that gap. Lashing out when people got too close for comfort. More than anything, there had been that feeling of being so scared he'd get kicked out or hurt someone the second he started picking up on the other kid's magic too.
The days of those fears had never really passed - even as Sebastian grew older. If anything he'd just matured to keep those fears a bit more isolated. Remaining impassive on the outside even if those doubts still cycled furiously inside his head.
Which was maybe why he felt prepared when the Morey's announced they'd be bringing in one last child who needed the same help the rest of them had. Like he understood some of the emotions that might've been swirling in this kid's head too, or that Sebastian knew he'd see those same animalistic fears in this one as well. The very things that people expected to go away as time carried on. That fears and discomforts might settle - but even now, after the foster period, officially adopted into the family, Seb could still see that look on Gem's face.
He couldn't blame the kid either. Weekends at the Morey's were chaotic. Even with Mads in a different country, Dian and Isaac still visited from university - and Saturdays when they had early dinners together so they could all hang out for the night were no different. They were usually loud, boisterous. Bickering and playful arguments breaking out between siblings and parents alike. Even at fourteen, Sebastian had still been one of the quieter siblings though. Often near the outskirts, observing more than participating, and that was how Gem caught his attention in the first place. He looked... overstimulated? Trapped? Scared? Something. He could see some kind of calculation etching worrying into the younger boy's brows, perhaps some kind of impending situation on the horizon. Sebastian's gaze cut across the living room, meeting Elliot's own for a moment through the flow of conversation and activity. There was a second he was worried the older man might mistake his glance for nothing more than chance and look away again, but there must have been an edge in the way their gazes met that kept Elliot's eyes on him. Long enough for Sebastian to softly tilt his head in their newest family member's direction. A subtle raise of his brow following.
A silent communication that said do you think he's okay?

what a lot of people seem to miss when analyzing c!gem is her savior complex and how prevalent it really is
think of every single player series she has, always helping a village/villagers; afterlife and hc s9 transforming a village was also a large part of those series. in afterlife she purposely triggered a raid to be officially "hero of the village" also justifying the raid through unconnected things (a random blue moon) afterwards the village is actively on fire from her and she comments on how a few iron golems probably died while still calling it a victory (afrterlife ep 10)
it even extends outside of npcs. the most notable example being in esmp s1. she stood by fwip and sausage no matter what, but when jimmy asks for her help, gem doesn't do anything right then and there. instead, she has a private meeting with jimmy to ensure him that she can help him (esmp s1 ep 8). with xornoth, she was one of the biggest helps tracking information about them, even if it was detrimental to her own well-being (an example being getting kidnapped in ep 13). saving the ender dragon, saving sausage, saving shrub, saving joey, "saving" scott. giving scott unwanted help is what led her to be partly corrupted by xornoth, and sticking so physically close to fwip is what made crystal cliffs one of the most vulnerable empires to the rapture
you could also argue that this trait appears in esmp s2, though less obviously, because in lore, she is the one who is producing the majority of golden carrots. another example within this series is her religion. in the episode, she introduces it in (ep 11) with the goal of it to 1. look cool, 2. ensure everyone is safe from phantoms. she states over and over again how the church/religion is to help the people. while none of this is malicious and doesn't harm anyone, it exemplifies their need to provide
in secret life, the way she keeps, purposely or not, being the leader of armies; though the ender dragon fight holds the most weight here because she chose to do that. after the boogeyman apocalypse, she outright states, "i seem to be a bit of a hero on the sever" (ep 8 7:07). actively positioning herself in such a way to prove to anyone listening or to herself that she was in the right for murder basically everyone for zero benefit to the victims. cleo even points out how she will have to turn on pearl/the mounders eventually, but she refuses this notion because she believes that she can save everybody
