ARA was seated in a booth in the only inn that was somewhat empty in the city. If she was honest, she'd admit she was still more than surprised about a whole new court coming to light, but to be entirely honest, she was also a little intrigued. Perhaps a bit excited. A smidgen thrilled, as well. Nothing truly exciting ever really happened anymore ( faes being faes & waging wars over everything just because they were bored with immortality was not really new & thus no longer exciting or scandalous or even remotely interesting ).

but, this new court was exciting & so was everything else about it.

The downside? Ara got pretty bored & disinterested pretty quickly. Unfortunately for her, it started to happen rather quickly with this new court as well.

Swirling a glass of expensive - & thus less exquisite - whiskey, she pursed her lips & frowned, averting her gaze from the bar & the barman to the amber liquid in her crystal glass. Ice clinked around & the sound of it was the most interesting thing that's happened to her today. Turning to the person sitting in her vicinity, Ara asked;

"Is it just me or is this place no longer as exciting as it was when we first got here? Even dragons are now old news."

Oh. Oh Greyface 💕. It depends on who does it. Claude & Sevina do that shit or just flat out hold onto her head to her alllll the time & Keira loves it, gets this bigass grin on her face while her arms loop around the one on her head, if she really likes or trusts someone they are allowed to touch her head/hair anytime she gets really happy. Sirens & Siren bloods are very receptive to physical touch & VERY protective of their hair because vanity is very much a thing for them so they fold™️ when someone they favour touches them anywhere, even their soft & pretty™️ hair.

Now… If she doesn’t like you. She’s doing the same thing Claude did to Alistair Triton back when the two had beef (they’ve made up since this fight, dude finally came around & stopped calling Amadis & Alaine gross abominations & shit, finally started being a GOOD grandfather to them)

But yeah you touch her head & Keira doesn’t know you know you or L ike that you might indeed die of blood loss or from the sheer BRUTALITY of being beaten to a bloody pulp by your own appendage. Beelzebub learned this the HARD way once but unfortunately he did survive the arm slappening. *sigh*

any recommendations for light/silly fantasy for someone who's read most of them? favourites are: finding home by hari conner, so this is ever after, emily wilde, the ruthless lady's guide to wizardry, legends and lattes, terry pratchett. also liked the very secrety society of irregular witches, the league of gentlewomen witches, tress of the emerald sea, some other f t lukens books, swordheart, fangs by sarah anderson. so anything with those vibes that are not one of those. I do want to read half a soul and psalm for the wild-built but I can't get them currently through my library.

Wow you were not kidding when you said you had read most of them! Many we would typically recommend are already in your list, but we DO have some more for you that hopefully you haven't read!

Oh, and real quick: You may have already done this, but if you haven't - check and see if your library has a purchase request or interlibrary loan service. Many libraries do, and often people don't know about it. They might be able to get you Half a Soul and Psalm for the Wild-Built if they know you're looking for them!

Try A Spell for Heartsickness by Alistair Reeves. The MC is a manic witch with a snarky corvid familiar, and they have to navigate setting up shop in a remote village that's harboring secrets and surrounded by some creepy woods.

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan - it's portal fantasy and the main character is incredibly genre aware. And sarcastic about it. The author is on tumblr and it shows (in a good way!)

Since you like T. Kingfisher, if you haven't continued on with Paladin's Grace yet it's very much in the vein of Swordheart so give that a look. You could also try A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking which is a bit different to the World of the White Rat books but still great!

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede was a formative read for me. Princess Cimorene is determined to avoid marriage so she arranges to get herself carried off by a dragon. It's a delight. Start with Dealing with Dragons.

“Well you certainly have been showing that so far.” He stated, with a slight hint of seduction in his tone. The answer he got to his question raise a brow. Sure he took the things Alistair was saying as compliments, which mainly brought a smirk to his face. However what confused was him going back a forth between saying not many guys were like him and no guys was like him, though he decided to not put any focus on that when he spoke again. “It’s nice to know that I’m unique in that. Although really, it’s just who I am, and I don’t see any reason to be ashamed or apologetic about that. Neither do I see anything wrong with talking about sex, and my wants and likes. Especially to a really hot guy that I want to have sex with.” He stated unashamedly and even giving him a wink. That wasn’t to make it clear that he wanted to have sex with him as he already made that clear plenty of times before, including the topping and bottoming discussion. Rather, what he was making clear with his wink was that he found him really hot.

He had his curiosity shown on his face at Alistair answering his question on how kinky he was with his own question. Before he could respond, Alistair was already diving under the water. He could see him coming closer and then felt his hands on his shorts. That’s when he understood what Alistair was about to do and allowed the guy to take them off. Then once Alistair came back up and tossed his shorts of the pool, Theo chuckled when the guy stated the obvious. The next thing said made his smirk shift into more of a lustful one and even grow before putting his right arm around him and placing that hand on his right ass cheek. The hybrid then leaned in give him a passionate kiss while firmly squeezing that cheek. The kiss didn’t last long only because he was indeed curious to see him show off what he could do. “Well, I didn’t stop you the first time, and I sure as hell won’t now. Go on ahead, baby.” He told him before letting him go.

“Good because that was my point. I wanted to show you that I could be sexy and flirt too.” Though it was obvious that he was doing way more than that just that. He was telling Theo that he wanted more than just flirt and play a bit. He wanted to heat things up even further and motivate Theo to do what words could not do, even if he was still a little nervous about it. Even in this conversation, Theo spoke about his sexuality and desires so freely. Maybe it was the hunting training that made him keep his thoughts to himself, or maybe it was something else but he did admire that about Theo and found it attractive at the same time.

“You are unapologetic yourself. You know you are hot and you became like you are hot. You are confident, but not to the point of cockiness. So yeah I don’t think there has ever been another guy like you. "He clarified. "Even now, you speak so freely about what you like and what you could do or want. Not everybody is like that.” He told him, “And with that in mind, you want to know how kinky I am?” He asked and decided to just dive into it. No really, he dive in and and swam towards Theo and slowly remove his garment. He knew he had not done that outside of the pool, but this time he realized it seemed the topic was not going to go away so he decided to fuck it and just get with the program. It was why when he came back up, he had the garment on his hand, but threw it away outside of the pool. “Now you are naked and….” He looked down. “I could dive again and show you what I can do.”

Alistair didn't need to sleep, but he was exhausted. He ran his hand over his face with a sigh as he shifted the cup in his hand. Ears picking up the sound of someone walking in. "You're not supposed to be back here."

Well, seeing as how my son has intercepted them and now decided he wants to keep all of them, they're someone else's problem now. They're my work partner's problem.

I was looking through AoUV for research purposes and I ended up taking note of the first line from each of the first POV chapters to see what kind of tone it set for that character. And honestly, kudos to Amanda and Charlie, if you think about it they all do a really good job of setting up the basis for the POV characters.

"The Lowe family had always been the undisputed villains of their town's ancient, bloodstained story, and no one understood that more than the Lowe brothers." Right away this establishes what the Lowes are like, how Alistair fits into that in regards to the tournament curse, and the fact that he and his brother are set apart from the rest because of their family.

"The funeral party flocked around the grave as the pallbearers lowered the casket into the earth." This opening line is written so passively that we don't even know whose funeral it is, and that's kind of the point. Immediately, we know that the Macaslans are closely tied to death, like scavengers, and that Isobel's identity will ultimately come back to the survival instincts of her family name.

"Callista Grieve did not wear white to her wedding." This one makes me feral, because the first line of Gavin's first POV chapter is literally about someone else. He's not even the main character in the first chapter of his own story. He's a guest, an afterthought, and his sister's eagerness to get away from the family only solidifies this starting point for him.

"The amphitheater at the edge of her family's estate always made Briony Thorburn feel like she was stepping onto a stage." I have to be honest and point out that this opening line makes Briony sound like a fucking idiot, because wow, it's almost like an amphitheater is a kind of stage. But looking beyond that, it speaks volumes that she's already putting herself at the center of the story before the final test even happens. It sets up her complete shock when she isn't chosen as champion, and the way she always makes herself the hero.

Just some interesting stuff about the way each of the POV characters are introduced!
