CLAMP Exhibition (2024)

July 3 - September 23, 2024 in Tokyo

The biggest CLAMP exhibition to date, the event showcases the original artwork from 23 works made by the group of four women, from RG Veda to Card Captor Sakura: Clear Card (technically 22 but they're counting Legal Drug and Drug and Drop separetely).

Over the years CLAMP has published a variety of manga, including those for boys (shounen), girls (shoujo) and young men (seinen), depending on the magazine they were published. Appealing to readers of all ages, genders and countries, their work continues to captivate.

The exhibition will feature a total of 800 original manuscripts (200 in color, 600 black and white), divided in 7 areas: Color, Love, Adventure, Magic, Phrase, plus Imagination and Dream.

C for COLOR. CLAMP colors the world.

Displaying a total of 200 original colored pieces from all 23 works (100 for each half of the exhibition).

This area showcases the variety of artstyles, techniques and tools CLAMP used over the years on their different manga. Includes pieces with colored ink, Copic markers, acrylic gouache, pastels, and digital art.

Even when publishing 2 different works at the same time the group likes to vary their tools: RG Veda (1989-96) was colored with ink and airbrushes, while Tokyo Babylon (1990-93) was colored with screen tones. The artstyle also changed depending on the publisher.

2. L for LOVE. CLAMP draws the forms of love.

The artwork in this area are divided in 8 types of love seen throught CLAMP's manga.

"The love depicted by Clamp is not singular—there is a straightforward love towards a significant other, but it can also be a determination to protect loved ones, a thought character keeps in their hearts, or even the conflict itself." (from tokyoartbeat article)

3. A for ADVENTURE. CLAMP weaves the stories of adventure.

350 manuscripts from 6 action-packed manga series: RG Veda, Tokyo Babylon, X/1999, Magic Knight Rayearth, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE.

Includes a synopsis of each work and selected scenes to follow along parts of the story.

4. M for MAGIC. CLAMP casts its magic.

The fantasy, magic, and mysterious powers seen in CLAMP works are seen in the moving manga pannels projected in 3 large screens in this area.

5. P for Phrase. CLAMP spins the phrases.

The first room showcases 40 manuscripts from xxxHolic.

The second room focuses on the power of words spun by CLAMP, exhibiting quotes form their works on the walls. Visitors can also pull one phrase sticker from the Phrase Box from CLAMP and take it home, or stick it to a wall in the room. There are 120 different phrases to pull.

6. IMAGINATION

Timeline of 35 years of creative work, from 1989 to 2024, featuring manga volumes, magazine issues, and more.

An installation in the center of the room also features quotes from a new interview with the four women specially for this event.

This is also the only area which features CLAMP's work in other media, including various collaborations. There is a selection of color illustrations, rough design drafts, and other artworks from Soryuden: Super Dragon Brothers, CODE GEASS, BLOOD-C, HiGH＆LOW g-sword, Cardfight!! Vanguard, GIFT (picture book by Ice skater Yuzuru Hanyu), The Grimm Variations, and HELLO KITTY.

7. DREAM

The last area is solely to exhibit a new illustration featuring Ashura (RG Veda) and Sakura Kinomoto (Card Captor Sakura: Clear Card), representing CLAMP's beginnings and future through their first and latest work.

"Kuro" (Black) and "Shiro" (White) are also the names of the new artbooks titled COLOR, which compile the artworks seen in the exhibition. A deluxe edition will be released at a later date compiling both volumes in one.

The audio guide during the exhibition is provided by Jun Fukuyama, who has played Kimihiro Watanuki in the anime series xxxHOLiC, Kobayashi Kotaro in ANGELIC LAYER, and Lelouch Lamperouge in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (CLAMP is responsible for character design in Code Geass) .

The place also features a store with a long list of products.

They also have the first volume of their various manga available to read, and a TV showcases the recently shared announcement video of the new anime project of Magic Knight Rayearth.

Long Spoilers Below

This one is the Syaoran twins from Holitsuba. I didn't realize this before, but in the line post, the twins were called '小龍と小狼', which means one would be Xiaolang (Syaoran) or 'little wolf' and the other one would be called Xiaolong (Syaoron) or 'little dragon' in both Chinese and Japanese.

Syaoron = Xiaolong = 小龍: 小= small, little 龍= dragon, especially a Chinese dragon

Syaoran = Xiaolang = 小狼: 小= small, little 狼= wolf

The kanji isn't listed on the source website. Without knowing the original kanji used for which character, it's just a 50/50 chance. Mistakes and mistransations can happen to anyone.

I delved into the JP wiki, and this is what I found.

Xiaolang (Syaoran)

"Class B. An international student from overseas. Diligent and honest, but academic performance is below average compared to Watanuki. Also a member of both the soccer club and the kendo club. In a romantic relationship with Sakura (Episode 1)."

Xiaolong (Syaoron)

Syaoran is more serious while Syaoron is light-hearted.

Chapitre 205 - Divine Providence Broken

As usual he has more calm and grace than would be expected from someone who has caused so much trouble for literally every single living person - but of course he does, it’s Clow Reed. 

But Clow Reed aside there are some incredibly fun visual choices all over this. Beneath his robes you can see the same kind of traditional clothing that Lava Lamp and his father wore, tying the bloodline together in a way you can actually see. He also has butterfly clasps holding the robe closed, which evoke Yuuko Ichihara but also a bit of Watanuki, who is just as much his descendant as Lava Lamp is (and there are two butterflies, which would match their duality). 

Clow himself gazes peacefully out at scenery that we can’t see, but we CAN see the bare branches of a tree with three birds perched nearby. The birds could easily be argued to be a sign of anyone you really wanted it to be. Is it the remaining Tsubasa family - Fai, Kurogane, and Lava Lamp? Is Lava Lamp on a separate branch because he’s the only one of them who comes from a different timeline?

Is it maybe the three Syaorans, with Watanuki and Lava Lamp on one branch and our Clone Syaoran on another (or the other way around?)? Or is it the Sakuras, with the original ‘Sakura’ frozen in time on her own branch, while the other Sakura and her clone sit on the other?

Are the branches of the tree a sign of diverging paths in time? Of timelines cut off and restarted and choices leading into different directions? Is the number of birds a representation of that original timeline (ie, 1 bird) has now become a new timeline altogether, but resulted in more birds than there were originally due to the disturbance? Or is the fact that we see BOTH scenarios at the same time a sign that the broken universe can still be mended, and the three as a whole will grow again in the future? Or perhaps a sign of how Clamp's future vision worked, seeing multiple paths and timelines at once? 

OR. Are they just pretty birds? The most deceptive option?!

Either way, we’ve had several other covers of the Tsubasa family standing in a dead-looking tree, and here we have Clow Reed calmly watching the same kind of tree - but from a distance.

New chapter

Different Directions - Chapter 10: Loved It's been one shit week. One of the reasons I wrote this fic much faster than planned was that it helped me to make peace with my own grief. Both as a Ukrainian living through a war, and my personal, weird grief, the one you get in advance: my grandma was slowly dying from cancer, fading away and losing parts of herself more and more every day. We cared for her ourselves, so this year I learned a lot more about palliative care that I ever planned to. Yesterday she died in what I hope was a light, freeing death. This chapter was to be published yesterday, but of course, plans changed. Still I have to something with myself today, why not post it? The next one is going to be the hardest one, the one I planned right from the start. What a coincidence, huh

This chapter has a lot of answers, bit still not all of them. I am not too fond of it, but there are some parts I loved. I just had to play with Watanuki's lost memories, because he is a very clever guy and no way he never made the connections about the role of C!Sakura and C!Syaoran in his life. And at first I surprised myself by inserting the CCS!Sakura to the plot, but it makes so much sense! She is another dreamseer, after all, and of course that weird network of Sakuras in dream would drag her into this dream as well.

You will need two last omakes of Horitsuba for this - Get ready to meet the Exchange student and that last one about the costumed play. And the soundtrack to this chapter is Hozier's "Talk", because imagine being loved by Watanuki?

In the end, I want to tell everybody going through loss and grief right now that there's still light to be found around you. It might not change anything or eclipse that hollowness inside. But it can give you a moment of rest, an accidental smile to relax tense jaws, a warmness of someone's genuine interest and concern. Allow yourself this light and this smile and this rest. Remember White Mokona and Black Mokona still had similler abilities and secret techniques. After all, Clow Reed had created the two Mokonas with Yuko after encountering the original Mokona: a white Mokona that could travel through worlds. Black Mokona had a blue gem made by Clow Reed and has the ability to seal magical power and also holds Sakura's memories of Syaroan and Watanuki's memory of his past.

Also, According to Dana Terrace, Hooty has an evil twin called "Booty". So in Tsubasa of Phantasia (AU), Booty is White Mokona.

I already introduced that Yuko and Lilith Clawthorne are the same person in Tsubasa of Phantasia. And Yuko had a sister named Edalyn Clawthorne

The relationship between Yuko and Mokona is the same as with Lilith and Hooty. Because Original Black Mokona is also Hooty itself in Tsubasa of Phantasia.

Watanuki sort of out of sudden falls out of the window. Nothing pushed him, nor he consciously tried to kill himself. Later on it's revealed that was because of Himawari's curse of bringing bad luck to those around her. So I always attributed window fall that

Do you think the moment C!Syaoran stabbed R!Syaoran's thigh is the same precise moment when Kimihiro fell from the window?

I'm SO glad you asked me this, because I can give you a definitive answer for this! So the answer is no. The moment Watanuki (Kimihiro) fell through the window was not at the same moment R!Syaoran's thigh was stabbed. I looked up the dates for when the chapters were released in serialization too just to make sure. So the chapter where R!Syaoran was stabbed in the thigh occurred in TRC chapter 123, which was released around July 28th, 2006 (maybe not that exact date, but at least in that week), and the chapter where Watanuki fell through the window in XXXHolic was released on the week of August 23rd, 2006 via chapter 116, nearly a full month later. But I like your thinking! Here's the fun part of this answer. I can actually tell you that there is a definitive parallel Tsubasa moment for the time Watanuki fell through the window. It did not happen at the same points in their life or at the same time in the manga's serialization, but R!Syaoran's 'window' moment was actually when he fought Fei Wang Reed in the ruins on Sakura's 7th birthday. The reason I know this is because when both R!Syaoran and Watanuki woke up in Yuuko's place with their injuries, CLAMP drew the pages exactly the same way, and the two had bandages in exactly the same places.

This scene also makes my blood boil because it essentially means that the injuries Fei Wang Reed gave to poor 7 year old R!Syaoran was the equivalent to falling out of a two story window with a pane of glass.

It's also fun to compare how the both of them handled their injuries differently. Like R!Syaoran not listening when told to rest, and Watanuki being a good boy and staying put in that bed until he was all better. I hope this answers your question!

i finally finished tsubasa: reservoir chronicle after 19 years of reading it!! i always had a hard time making it past infinity arc.

i was so attached to c!syaoran and couldn't connect with the real syaoran, no matter how hard i tried. he seemed so one-dimensional by comparison. but when i stumbled upon fanfiction by tonight's the night on ff.net i warmed up to r!syaoran and wanted to give it another shot.

i somewhat understand the convoluted ending now but i'm not satisfied with it. thoughts under the cut.

i wish c!syaoran and c!sakura's storyline ended with implying the would be reincarnated, without clamp showing us how it literally happened.

i didn't like them joining the final battle either, and having the same magic circle as their ccs counterparts when they have such different histories. not onboard with the fact that r!syaoran is esentially in love with the original of his mum either.

c!syaoran trusting r!syaoran to kill fei wong reed was stunning. it showed how much agency he had over himself now. i wish clamp had ended it there without drawing out the final battle.

for all the talk about fei wong reed being a threat to life as we know it, the final battle was mostly the kurogane, fai and syaoran getting some help from everyone else via wishes/ sacrifices. it's just not the same as actually showing up at the final battle.

does this mean i want everyone in the clamp universe to teleport in, like in the avengers: infinity war? probably not, but i wouldn't complain if heavy hitters like seishirou or fuuma joined in for support. pretty sure fei wong reed winning would affect their dimension-travelling day jobs.

i also wanted r!sakura to play a more active role despite tsubasa being syaoran's story. sakura's hope and willpower was the theme of cardcaptor sakura and i would have loved to see it here as well.

i wished watanuki and yuuko had it better. i'd do another read of xxxholic (which i finished a few years back) but the last volumes are to depressing for me to revisit. i want to know more about yuuko's life with clow reed. and watanuki deserved better.

tsubasa being both r!sakura and r!syaoran's name. hmm. sure. it didn't have the same gravity for me as tomoyo saying kurogane's true name (youou) just once. it felt like clamp shoehorned that in last minute just make the title seem clever.

also! the ending with them going on a trip with just the boys? yes, yes, i know syaoran has to keep travelling. but i don't like separating syaoran from sakura when they only just found each other again. r!syaoran and r!sakura are just not the power couple the way their clones are despite being the originals.

c!syaoran and c!sakura deserved to be on the final pages. maybe we see counterparts living different lives in hong kong and tokyo way into adulthood. maybe we don't know if they'll meet but we hope they do. after all, syaoran and sakura finding their way back to each other is the heart of their story.

OOH did she see something that happens to Lava Lamp?

I love the double image of Lava Lamp in her eyes, which matches BOTH her vision of Lava Lamp and Watanuki as [redacted], AND the general Double Syaoran Future we’re dealing with in the present. I wonder how much of that she saw? I wonder how many of those details were even physically possible to foresee before the timeline went weird?

It's been 23156789 years after the whole TRC divide by zero, chicken-egg theory that I still confuse had the timeline was not fucked up, who would be R!Syaoran's real parents.

And I just realize that R!Syaoran's parents would have been the Li Clan possibly Li Yelan (if it's still the same like CCS). But due to the C!Syaoran change the time and then with C!Sakura make their own choice, they both fucked it up. The C!Syaoran become the son of the-should-be R!Syaoran's parents. Therefore the whole mess

But why this timeline was not fixed when they fixed the time loop??? Bcs C!Syaoran's existence was already in there. He had already become the son of the Li Clan. He had already been "humanize". So C!Syaoran was a clone but the same time was also a human (someone already gave birth to him, people had memories of him etc)

Why not fixed the time by returning before C!Syaoran and C!Sakura exist. Because turning back time would just ruin their own time loop again. And even if it's not, C!Syaoran and C!Sakura would've existed anyway (due to Butt Chin) and therefore make the same choice.

The only way to fixed the time with turning back is to turn back before Clow Reed had a small thought to make Yuuko stay. With this, Yuuko would have been died, Butt Chin would have not existed neither do C!Syaoran and C!Sakura. Watanuki also has a high chance of not existed. Kurogane's mother would have not be killed therefore his father should have not died on that day too. Fay might have not born twin (I forgot about this, the details are murky)

Idk tho, it's just a theory. I might be wrong
