EDIT: Am rethinking lots of this so I don't agree with it all lol I was misinformed on some bits this was just to my knowledge ok !
People trying to separate jirai kei and girly kei confuse me so much. I'm not saying they are interchangeable cuz they are NOT, but girly kei is an umbrella term. There is not just one type of "girly". And "dark girly" has NEVER been a thing in Japanese fashion.
Girly kei is an old term I see people saying it's new cuz of jirai?? And ryousangata is also old and was basically the equivalent of cally a girly kei wearer "basic". Substyles like otome kei are nothing like jirai so again girly kei is not jirai. But some of jirai is girly kei.
Girly kei, in general, depends on what is trending. So when jirai formed, many girls who were engaging in dangerous behaviors were wearing the popular girly kei. But the style changed to not just frilled blouses and more t shirt, hoodies, darker stuff, etc., making it jirai.
A lot of Japanese people will try jirai style, so it definitely is a fashion, but it is MORE than a fashion. I see a lot of English speaking girly kei wearers not like the term jirai, but it definitely is a style and it did come from girly kei.
The thing is, jirai (landmine) IS an insult and jirai girls are mocked. And the side of jirai like RSK (self harm), drinking, sex work, host clubs, is very common, but not a part of the style.
The make up in jirai is also not seen in other girly kei styles of the past. The byojaku and puffy eyes are not new and are worn with menhera and other darker styles.
There is a differentiation on jirai and girly kei, but both ARE styles and based on trends.
( This is kind of a mess of words, I might've worded things wrong I am just putting down info from sources I've read, mostly from Japanese speakers. I try to be as accurate as possible. )
#my brains a mess ok#waiting for time to go by and have the style settled#text#jirai#jiraiblr#jiraiblogging#girly kei

Explaining J-fashion sub cultures #1, Jirai kei
______________________________________________________________
WARNING!! This blog discuses about certain triggering topics such as suicide, illegal/violent behaviours, self harm, alcoholism and more. This post isn't graphic but if mentions of these topics trigger you, please click off/scroll away (っ◞‸◟ c)
______________________________________________________________
Hi hi hi everyone! I'm starting a new series discussing J-fashion sub cultures! If anything was incorrect or lost in translation, feel free to comment and tell me, so I can edit it ♡⸜(˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶)⸝♡
Moving on... Today we will be discussing Jirai kei!
Jirai kei is a relatively new fashion subcultre that popped up in the early 2020's that was based off/created in the area of Kabukicho. It has kind of an edgy look, usually paired with colours like black and pink (most common), or white and blue.
Now, where did the name Jirai Kei come from? In Japanese, 地雷 (jirai) is used as a slang term for describing something "dangerous" or "violent". 地雷 directly translates to landmine, henceforth the English name also being landmine girl. The reason why it is called jirai is that it is seen that the women/girls who participate in this sub culture are seen as violent, mentally unstable or manipulative. Jirai Onna (地雷女) is used as a derogatory term towards women. In the sub culture, the women who participate are Jirai Joshi (地雷女子) aka landmine women, and men, Jirai Dashi (地雷男子) aka landmine men.
Following on, the origins come from a Japanese Youtuber SuReRo who went viral in 2020 March, the term has since then gradually turned into a subculture. It is also said that the origins come from Toyoko kids. Toyoko kids are kids who are usually seen in Kabukicho who are "run away kids" aged 10-18.
Now onto the brighter topics, the style comes from other styles such as Japanese girly fashion and yami kawaii. Some of the style basics consist of, high-waisted skirts or shorts adorned with laces and frills usually in colour pallets like black and pink being the most common, white and blue, and occasionally red and black. Mary Janes are very popular considering that most shoes worn with jirai kei are platformers.
For the hair and makeup, the makeup consists of an exaggerated version of byojaku with a red or pink under eye blush. Usually their foundation is very pale, and the makeup exaggerates a tear bag or ageyo sal. For the hair, pigtails with black hair, highlights and bangs is very common in jirai kei but, there are many other hairstyles to try from in jirai kei!
Next off, the reason that this sub culture is seen in a derogatory way comes from some criticism/controversies, such as mental illness, self harm, drug usage, sex work, underage prostitution, and other topics. And unfortunately, it is not uncommon to see most followers of this community participate in these activities.
In the community, most people encourage hyper consumerism and trend cycling, which can be problematic for western people because of the high shipping fees of proxies.
(little comment from me) I think another damaging thing is that a lot of people in the sub culture over use filters and heavily edit their face, which can be VERY damaging to your self-esteem.

If any of the things I've said were incorrect/lost in translation, PLEASE tell me, so I can fix my mistakes. My goal is to educate others about J fashion sub styles and in no way trying to mis inform others or demonise jirai kei. Also, im not sure if the brands ive mentioned ship internationally which im very sorry about (ᵕ—ᴗ—)

to make it clear, menhera is not a fashion next, tenshi kaiwai is a promotional tag, not a fashion either there is a problem that people think there is nothing wrong with "people wearing jirai" the problem is that you simply cant wear it lol
"you dont have to be a jirai to wear jirai. if you dont like the term, here are alternatives: **literally styles on which all "landmine fashion" is based**" if you rlly havent seen a lot of info, havent looked at japanese sources, its better not to write theses that are supposed to convey something, cause you will only spread misinfo even more everything that is now called "jirai" was even before jirai boom in 2020. and im not even talking exclusively about girly kei. typical aspects of yamikawa anatomy are now being promoted as jirai (byojaku makeup (病弱メイク), crisscross ornament, himecut twintails, vent art prints…etc) also there is goth punk, which is currently promoted under "sabukaru" and "sabukaru jirai" (whatever it is supposed to mean) no one forbids you to call yourself a landmine tho, but you are told from everywhere that it IS NOT a fucking fashion thats all. thanks for attention
There's nothing wrong with people wearing jirai (girly kei or elsewise) regardless of their mental wellbe, you just need to think of it like wearing a more covert menhera — there are elements of mental health and other darker topics in or linked to it which you can't just ignore or claim as not existing in the first place. Even if you are a fashion jirai exclusive It is important to acknowledge the subculture origins and history of how you dress
Jirai kei, as the fashion alone, is just an augmented version of pre-existing fashions (girly kei, tenshi kawaii, etc. [These are the base styles to jirai so if you like the style but dont want to be jirai {if that makes sense} id recommend these]) with more menhera elements so if you like the fashion you do you, fashion is meant for fun — it's a positive way of expressing yourself whether that be expression of joy or struggle — and if you like jirai kei and it is what suits your fancy you have the right to wear it <3
(Are my thoughts slight contradictory I feel like they may read so)

so wonderful to find a fellow skyward sword appreciator…. :’] my fav character designs from any Zelda game like everyone’s so SHAPED and ANGULAR and DISTINCT and they all work perfectly with ur art style!!
YEAYEAYEA dude in sksw the design of different races on the surface are so good im a really big fan of those little ancient robot dudes like how their arms work is neat and they kind of have that off-kilter sensibility of the house from hello neighbour (yea bringing a different franchise into the convo), like in general that game is really aesthetically pleasing but i am not going to ramble here hehe (am thinking abt lake floria and mushrooms rn)
from other games i really like how they use rectangles/ cut triangles into wolf links mane and skull kids outfit to get that jagged appearance (which is like. mecore) and also everything in the toon link style?? like the sharp angles and the paper texture of the 2D art??? phenomenal
tldr zelda characters be shaped ig its less work for me lmao
(also thank u so muchhh😭😭)
#umm just realising my style may have been influenced by loz to a much greater extent than i am aware of rn#my fave is really toon link style in game too like wind waker link is really my fave#he is so expressive and funny#ask#byojaku#fanmail#u snuck that compliment in so smoothly

So, I've been really sick the last few days. Four days ago I woke up with a horrible pain in my stomach and we had to call the paramedics. I've been taking my meds and today I felt better and had enough energy for this. Byojaku makeup, I LOVE the way it looks... I might wear it as my trademark look once this craziness is over. OwO Now I need yamikawa clothing to go with it, hehe. #menhera #yamikawaii #byojaku #byojakumakeup #byojaku #igari #igarimakeup #kawaii #かわいい #cute #makeuplooks #pizzapalette #ferntorres https://www.instagram.com/p/CDLUAlHnCRd/?igshid=1rnpmr644b4n9
