Ever since his best friend Will Byers was murdered back in 1985, Mike Wheeler wanted nothing more than to leave his hometown of Hawkins, Indiana and never look back—only each and every year he’s forced to make an exception when it comes to the holidays. And when Mike visits for Christmas in 1995, his mom asks him to help clear out some junk in his room and down in the basement before he returns home to Indianapolis. But when he comes across an old trunk containing his Supercom walkie-talkie and ham radio, he discovers something strange that has the potential to change everything…

Will sets his backpack by his feet and starts layering on his winter garb—coat, scarf…

“So what’re you gonna do while I’m gone?—besides Christmas stuff, of course.” Mike asks, inching the slightest bit closer and making Will’s stomach flutter.

They’ve been doing this little dance of theirs a lot lately. It started back in the summer with their hands brushing against each other in dark movie theaters, and then there were all the times he would look up to find Mike staring (or vice versa), and of course all the times he’s caught Mike’s eyes darting down to his lips, because that’s happened so often he’s lost count. But they never say anything about it. It’s quite confusing really, like they were playing a strange game without a rule book. And sometimes Will isn’t entirely sure if it’s all just in his own head or if Mike was aware of it too. But one thing was certain, absolutely every time he’s alone like this with Mike, he wants to burst into a million pieces because he can’t get his heart to stop racing, or quell the butterflies living in his stomach, or simply ignore that crazy impulse he gets to lean in and kiss him.

Summary:

But as they close in on what seems to be the inevitable final confrontation with the Mad Wizard they have been fighting for years, Will finds his magic failing him as the darkness that scarred him during his first encounter with that very man finally overtakes him. Will stands no chance at stopping the demons that have been haunting him – after all how can he fight for a happy ending when he doesn’t believe he deserves one? - Or, Will learns to accept that his friends love him a whole lot more than he thinks they should.

A year after Vecna's defeat, things have finally returned to normal. Well, aside from the lingering nightmares. And the fact that Mike is in love with his best friend and it's getting increasingly harder to keep that to himself.

But it's all going to be fine. They're going to go to Steve's parent's heretofore undiscussed lakehouse, spend two weeks slow-roasting in the Indiana sun, and be normal teenagers for once. Really, the least they deserve at this point is a little summertime relaxation.

Hi I just read your story “I might be hoping about this” for the first time and it’s SO GOOD!! I love fics that explore character relations like that, and I definitely love a good, fluffy sickfic! I know you wrote it a little while ago, but I would literally do anything for a part 2. It’s so well written and I’d love to see more of that story!! Regardless, i loved it, you did a fantastic job!! <3

hiiii omg thank you so much! i know i wrote this fic just about a year and a half ago (??? insane) but for some reason i have received soooooooo so so many asks in that time wondering if i’d write a part 2 for it (another couple of asks like this are rotting in my inbox rn i am so sorry to anyone who sent one omg) and also very sorry if this answer is so super long but i just wanted to fully explain my thought process for this fic/the pt. 2 questions!!

first and foremost i’m so glad you enjoyed it! that fic was a very special one for me to write because it was my foray into established relationship, which i previously swore i’d never write (lol) and also because physical touch and acts of service are definitely how i show love in romantic relationships so it was just many thousands of words of me projecting hopelessly onto the two of them 😗 unfortunately i have never really had any plans to continue this story in a part 2 — so many people have asked for one and i hate to disappoint, but this fic has always existed in my mind as a one-parter, and i don’t think i could write a follow up without it falling flat or feeling way too repetitive :( for me personally it’s very important that i feel i’m doing justice to the story i’m writing, even if it means doing things like sacrificing a reasonable word count (stares at my 30k+ oneshots and chapter updates) for the sake of good pacing and time to flesh out scenes i think are important to include, etc. i just unfortunately don’t feel like i would be able to do this universe and story justice with a part 2, which is why i don’t think i’ll ever write one. so so sorry to disappoint but i do appreciate your dedication to the fic and i’m glad it touched you!! byler and domestic intimacy are two things that are very important to me and i do have a couple of concepts that i haven’t yet written that would definitely also explore this dynamic for them — if you can bear to stick around until i finally end up writing them LOL. thank you so much for the kind words (and so sorry to the atrociously long answer i gave for a very simple ask) 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

“That’s awesome… ‘cause now I’ll finally be able to radio and talk to you whenever I want—no more fighting Nancy for the phone.”

“Yeah…” then Will slips a pair of brown gloves onto his hands, and as he stares down at them trying to think of what else to say, only one thing pops into his head—how he went along with Lucas’s lie about the roll and how much it was actually bothering him. It bothered him because Mike didn’t deserve that—he didn’t deserve to be lied to. And he’d probably be mad if he found out. He always works so hard on his campaigns and lying about the roll just made Will feel like he was a cheater and a bad friend—especially when Mike was standing right in front of him, all smiles and excited at the opportunity to talk to him endlessly on a ham radio—so of course the very next thing to come out of his mouth ends up being; “It was a seven, by the way…”

“Huh?”

“The roll... I found the d20… it was a seven.”

December 22, 1995

Every year Mike dreads his inevitable return to his hometown for the holidays—if it wasn’t for his parents and sisters, he’d never set foot in Hawkins ever again. But he especially hated coming back for Christmas because this particular time of year was forever laced with horrible memories that had a way of cutting into his heart like a sword. Of course, he’d never hear the end of it if he avoided his family’s holiday gatherings. Nancy would pester him, Holly would beg, his mother would cry—his father was perhaps the only one who wouldn’t care either way, he was always the apathetic type, yet he would likely still remind him how much it would break his mother’s heart. So every year, he’d wrap duct tape around his own just to prevent hers from breaking—he’d force himself to make the trip.
