in a cool thematic chiasmus, I also saw bye bye tiberius today, a beautiful doco about four generations of women from a palestinian family, one of whom is hiam abbass, all of whom are extremely charismatic. watch this film, free palestine

an excellent detail in a move full of them: the concentration camp kommandant in zone of interest shows the most affection in the movie to his horse

bye bye tiberias (2023). title refers to the expulsion of hiam abbass’s family from their home village near the lake tiberias. i saw this film at tiff in september. i remember the story of abbass’s aunt’s separation from the rest of her family during the nakba. she had to go to syria. never saw her family again. hiam found her and was only able to visit because of her french passport. her aunt hugged her and smelled her and smelled her, saying she smelled like her family. when i think of this film, i think about how it would not have existed if it werent for that first crime against humanity. none of this wouldve happened. and people still find the gall to call it “complex”.
