I'm very bored and need motion, and posting old art on Bluesky only gets me so far.
While shuffling through even older art, I decided I'd redraw a 20-year-old nonsense design that has always kinda lived rent-free in my head despite losing its original purpose to changes in the narrative it was tied to.
While it was originally an alt-form for a half-Bydo character from an old R-Type story, that character's frame of reference shifted to incorporating the 'Xelf' from R-Type FINAL when that came out, leaving this design to pass from use, but not from memory.
Largely attempted to keep as many of the weird, incongruous details intact; only modifying their application to make the design 'work' a little better. Some simpler parts have had detail added to bring them up to match the rest
I still have no idea what I could use it for, but I just kinda like how it looks so I wanted to redraw it. Probably safe, honestly, to not get too attached to it. Wouldn't want to be disappointed if it doesn't go anywhere a second time.
Here's the original image:
#art#cyborg#mecha#body horror#i guess i'll tag it#bydo#r-type#since it's not for that anymore but was way back when

She wasn't wrong, I don't think.
#shitposting#shmups#this was about zeroranger btw#but i think the lack of space for text + time to tell the player things#leads to the developer *having* to get creative if they want to say anything at all in their game#you can see it in other types of short games for sure#but at some point shmup devs decided they could put any text at all they wanted in their game and fans of the genre agreed#and it became a common aesthetic feature#(at least in a certain type of fan's eyes)#(some of whom would go on to make their own shmups)#(especially if they ever found out that shmups were relatively simple to make)#i think in rpg terms sting games are the most shmup-poi in my mind#like riviera especially. the way there's just extra flavor text in places where rpgs wouldn't have them#but in terms of what the op was actually talking about#i think about the bydo all the time dude#shmup story element that is just.... *gestures vaguely*#but at the same time the bydo are so spooky dude#they made two pretty cool srpgs about how spooky the bydo are#anyways yeh#play zeroranger

Gematsu Source
R-Type Tactics I • II Cosmos will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store in fall 2024, Granzella announced.
Here is an overview of the game, via western publisher NIS America:
About
As the Bydo continue to eliminate humanity, you must outsmart and outmaneuver them if the Space Corps has any hope of victory. That is, until you find yourself fighting alongside the very forces you were tasked with destroying… R-Type Tactics I • II Cosmos combines the side-scrolling, shoot ’em up action the series is known for with tactical, turn-based strategy gameplay for a one-of-a-kind R-Type experience! Remade in Unreal Engine 5, this two-game collection blasts its way onto Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC, with R-Type Tactics II also making its debut in the west for the first time! Deploy your forces across multiple campaigns, playing as both the Space Corps and the Bydo. You can also set your sights on competitive online play to see who the ultimate tactician really is. With hundreds of ships and levels to choose from between both games, along with branching missions and a new third campaign (all exclusive to R-Type Tactics II), R-Type Tactics I • II Cosmos is packed with out-of-this-world content!
Key Features
New Frontiers – With the debut of R-Type Tactics II in the west, both titles make their way from the PSP to modern consoles for the first time!
Whose Side Are You On? – Multiple campaigns for each faction, as well as branching storylines in R-Type Tactics II, allow for a unique gameplay experience across both titles while fleshing out the world of R-Type and the origins of the sinister Bydo Empire.
Destroy the Competition – Face off against other players online in both R-Type Tactics I and R-Type Tactics II!
An Unreal Makeover – Both titles have been remade using Unreal Engine 5, creating a collection that’s both strategically engaging and visually enthralling!

With the advent of 𝄽, suddenly more of the puzzle falls into place.
The original 'Infinite' Dragon that Noea witnessed as attacking Chronaxxus - as well as the 'Infinite' that Tob'kera saved Chronaxxus from - was not in fact a member of the Infinite Dragonflight, or even an Azerothian dragon in the first place. Both instances were actually a singular coalescence the Haunts of 𝄽 herself, piercing backwards through time in vengeful rage in hopes of killing Timeless in the past to prevent him from ever creating her.
However, in a pure stroke of "the Bydo ensure their own creation via time travel" parallel, all this does is set the cogs in motion to begin with, and thus all over again.
Chronaxxus doesn't realize that the 'Infinite' is actually his own daughter because he, himself, doesn't possess the capacity to project his future knowledge to his past self due to him devouring his own time as he travels forward through it. His past cannot be changed; but it had to have happened in the first place in order to be unalterable. 𝄽 doesn't know that, but tries anyway.
She attempts to hunt him down over the course of his timeline through various means, but is eventually snapped out of it by Matricia, who knows via Ferados what it means to lose everything and be infinitely lonely... but she's also a living example of the idea that multiverse eternity is a two-sided coin; Infinity, and the Here And Now.
#and no i haven't watched everything everywhere all at once#i've read a synopsis at best so i could understand all the gifs#i hear it's good but matricia's struggle with infinity pre-dates the movie so i just don't wanna hear it

Bitch
Has absorbed lingering energy signatures from enemy spacecraft and upgraded her guns to dual helix lasers. She is now capable of carrying our mission to destroy the Bydo empire, especially if that cat next to her is a Force, a living bioweapon made out of Bydo embryotic cell tissue, incubated and modified to consume their own kind. Destroy them and allow mankind to survive, R-9 "Bitch" Arrowhead.

Expunged is a beast with great power, yes? Well so are the creatures in the R-TYPE series you little shit. So for fun let’s see if Expunged cannot only survive but beat the shit out of the bosses in this game series.
Since this is combining the mechanics of R-TYPE with a chaos god from a rapping game mod, I have allowed some creative liberties. Expunged is not an R-craft spaceship and does not have access to a force or its powerups. Expunged can however shapeshift, but due to her being biological I give her the blessing of being hit a few extra times as supposed to being one-shotted if she touches anything.
Because I’m lazy we’re going up to Delta and skipping Super and Leo.
R-TYPE
1. Encounter (Dobkeratops): ex
It’s the first level, easy enough, and in space. But let’s say Expunged can survive in space for plot reasons. Dobby here can be one-shot with a fully charged and powered shot. The weak point is the chest burster in the middle. Maul that, and it’s a win of many battles to come.
2. Creature Cave (Gomander): ex
Creatures jump out at you. There are also jellyfish and an invincible snake. Gomander can be cheesed by camping at its weak point, which also simultaneously hurts it. Expunged is prone to strategies like this so let’s assume she uses it well.
3. Gigantic Warship (Green Inferno): ex
Space but this time you tear apart a whole warship. Easy for an Expunged.
4. Frontline Base (Complier): debatable
I wasn’t sure about this one because of the spore-producing enemies (Cytrons) and the boss that splits itself into three. The Gelds might also be an issue.
4.5 Hidden Stage (Helger): ex
Only found on the Master System, this is a very simple stage full of bugs. Helger just shoots bouncy balls. Expunged will be fine.
5. The Den (Bellmite): debatable
Fun fact! This stage is supposed to be underwater. Lets say Expunged can breathe underwater. The enemies in this stage explode or shoot deadly unblockable rays, and Bellmite is a machine guarded by many biological pods. These pods can shoot in and out and can quickly overwhelm the player. The same can be said about Expunged.
6. Transport System (way too many Dops): bydo
Too many Dops. This is the hardest level in the game, and the most puzzle of the game. A tight labyrinth with containers only able to be hurt on one side. Touching the walls is also a no, sorry buddy. In the PC version there is an actual boss named Yashoo that can be defeated, but surviving to get there?
7. City In Ruins (Bronco): debatable
There are way too many enemies here. Also trash.
8. The Bydo Empire’s Star (Bydo Core): bydo
While this stage is fairly simple, the boss is what causes Expunged’s downfall. The Core can only be harmed by shooting your R-craft’s force into it, and since Expunged doesn’t have a force, that’s a no-go. Even if she did attack every time the Core revealed itself, the Wins it produces lock onto the player after too long, ensuring instant death. (Expect Expunged to lose to the last levels a lot…)
Tally results: 4ex, 3debatable, 2bydo
R-TYPE II
1. Ruins (Subatomic): ex
The first level has similar mechanics and style to the first game’s first level. The boss is Dobby in a metal suit, with the same weak point. There are just more variation of attacks. Expunged should be fine.
2. The Cave (Barakus): ex
Half underwater, with sea bugs, crabs, and bombs. The boss is a little quirky but Expunged will be fine.
3. Gigantic Warship (Corvette): debatable
Name misleading. It’s actually many smaller warships that either fly as one or two on the screen. Corvette has three weak points that fly in and out of the main machine as it moves around. Tricky to navigate.
4. Resource Acquisition Area (Rios): debatable
This level is the hardest of the game… because shit moves. Other than that, it’s simple enemies, but Rios is not to be underestimated. It’s an unfair fight due to the environment moving with it in a chase scene.
5. Additional Base (Blender): ex
Like the fourth level, shit moves, except it doesn’t. Two little guys build and destroy the walls in a shifting labyrinth. Blender’s arena also moves depending on the enemies that wander through it. Expunged doesn’t have to follow this rule because she’s cool.
6. Bydo Empire (Womb): debatable
This last boss shares the same issue as the first game. You need a force to effectively destroy it before the homing missiles go crazy and lock on. Expunged might get help from the trapped ships, however…
Tally results: 3ex, 3debatable
R-TYPE III
1. Catapult Dimension (Guard Ray): ex
Spaaaaaaaaace first level also the boss is very silly. Expunged can handle it.
2. Acid Creatures (Necrosaur): debatable
There are creatures everywhere, and the walls are dripping with acid that destroy the actual level itself. I don’t think Expunged can be immune to that. Depending on if she has the American or Japanese version, Necrosaur will be very easy or she gets banned.
3. Heavy Metal Corridor (Course Crab): ex
Going down, sideways, and up. And there’s a crab that climbs the walls. I don’t have much to say about this one, but it’s an easy win.
4. Fire Cask Factory (Recojunator, Creature 666): debatable
The lanes of fire produced here take a lot of trial and error to remember, and that’s not even including the two bosses. The first is easy, basically City In Ruin’s Bronco but with fire lanes. After you defeat that, you exit the stage backwards, until you face la creatura. Oh and there are walls that smash you.
5. Bionics Laboratory (Phantom Cell): ex
The enemies here all mimic and or shapeshift, just like Expunged. Phantom Cell even takes the forms of bosses or enemies (Shell) fought in the past. Despite cosplaying as Rios for a hot second, there are no chase scenes, so Expunged should be fine.
6. Galaxy of Abyss (Mother Bydo): bydo
The layout of this one shifts in and out of reality. The enemies come out of a portal, and once the mini boss is defeated, the portal takes up everything. Mother Bydo is attached to a wall, but after being defeated once, pursuits you through a collapsing portal. The only way to win is to shoot your force into her. Expunged doesn’t have a force… I like to imagine that Expunged is dragged back into the portal instead of dying or escaping.
Tally results: 3ex, 2debatable, 1bydo
R-TYPE Delta
1. Lethal Weapon (Mortis-G): debatable
Crazy? The machine is crazy. It’s a ruined city because this huge fuck is going on a rampage. The first time it’s fought, twin jets are blown in your face, but the second time is backwards with an exposed core.
2. Deformation (Dust Nate Cocoon and Dust Nate Worm): ex
Half underwater, the fish here are bigger and deadlier, but I have confidence that Expunged can avoid them. And the other deformed creatures. The bugs are easy to kill.
3. Gigantic Attack (Trojan): ex
Another giant fuck-off robot, this time in the snow. And it walks. Expunged can survive space due to plot armor, she should be fine in a blizzard.
4. Invasion (QT Cat): debatable
This level is entirely scrolling upwards. It’s full of puzzles, enemies, and tight spaces. QT Cat should be easy for Expunged, but I’m not sure about everything else in this level.
5. Evil (Shell, Gomander, Green Inferno): debatable
Lots and lots of throwbacks, to levels that have been defeated and levels that have not. All the bosses here she has already fought. However, it is to be noted that this level takes place inside of a creature’s digestive track.
6. Awakening (Subkeratom): debatable
There is a lot going on in this level. Shit bouncing everywhere and enemies and probably an SMBZ reference tucked away. Subkeratom is someone we’ve fought before, many times, though I don’t believe Expunged can face against it as easily as before.
7. Life (Bydo Core): bydo
It’s back to the Bydo Dimension, which means you’re fucked because you aren’t an R-craft capable of opening portals. The level is tame, the boss might be a little overwhelming, but let’s say Expunged can defeat it without a force. She won’t be able to escape the dimension and will eventually get the R13 treatment.
Tally results: 2ex, 4debatable, 1bydo
Final results: 12ex, 12debatable, 4bydo
Conclusion:
Expunged would be able to play R-TYPE but not without getting hurt, losing a life or two, and getting a bad ending.
#i scream#my stuff#dave and bambi#r-type#long post#dnb expunged#sorry dnb and r-type fans you guys probably are unaware of each others mediums#don’t worry though this should fix that

I like Aevee Bee’s sense of imagery and writing, but the “Golden Endings” for both their games really rub me the wrong way, spoilers obviously
A vital component of both WKTD and HWBM is the fact that the protagonists are semi-literal metaphors for various minority groups, but the most complicated ending to get has them fully reconcile with their differences and go out as friends as allies. Which is fine and dandy, but does the author really want us to root for the ultimate heartwarming glorious victory for these characters being “haha let’s poison the water supply and begin the apocalypse” and “let’s plunge humanity into an apocalyptic space war”? Like yeah fuck the establishment but you girls are going off a little too hard.
It makes me think of those embarrassing YES QUEEN SLAY montages in the wake of those Game of Thrones episodes, where tearing down the old horrific opressive system immediately segues into becoming the new horrific oppressive system. “I want to become the Bydo from R-Type” is top nonbinary goals though, I can’t disagree with that.
One of my perennial probably-never-gonna-happen projects is doing a deep dive into the parallels between how Disco Elysium blurs the line between political theory and physics and the way We Know the Devil and Heaven Will Be Mine do the same. Like, they're by no means compatible systems of metaphysics, and given both the timing of their authorship and the circumstances of their publication I strongly doubt that either one influenced the other, but there are some very conspicuous points of intersection.
(Incidentally, if the way that Disco Elysium literalises the dialectical weight of history in its setting's laws of physics is living rent-free in your brain, you'd probably get a real kick out of We Know the Devil and Heaven Will Be Mine, assuming that frank discussions of religious trauma and transphobic violence aren't deal-breakers for you.)
