#shitposting#shmups#this was about zeroranger btw#but i think the lack of space for text + time to tell the player things#leads to the developer *having* to get creative if they want to say anything at all in their game#you can see it in other types of short games for sure#but at some point shmup devs decided they could put any text at all they wanted in their game and fans of the genre agreed#and it became a common aesthetic feature#(at least in a certain type of fan's eyes)#(some of whom would go on to make their own shmups)#(especially if they ever found out that shmups were relatively simple to make)#i think in rpg terms sting games are the most shmup-poi in my mind#like riviera especially. the way there's just extra flavor text in places where rpgs wouldn't have them#but in terms of what the op was actually talking about#i think about the bydo all the time dude#shmup story element that is just.... *gestures vaguely*#but at the same time the bydo are so spooky dude#they made two pretty cool srpgs about how spooky the bydo are#anyways yeh#play zeroranger
