6. How did you decide what tense and POV(s) to use?

I generally default to third person present unless there’s some kind of meta element I want to toy with. I feel like it’s a lot easier to figure out past/present/future tenses from that starting point, whereas starting from past tense it can be harder to keep track of past tense (current) and past tense (pluperfect/past continuous/etc whatever).

As for what point of view character, it ranges from ‘barely a decision because the fic inherently needs to be from this character’s perspective’ to ‘going back and forth writing snippets of scenes from different perspectives to find out what works’ but in the end, the decision’s made based on what perspective drives the fic the furthest and the easiest. I might be swapping a pov of a wip to see if it goes further..

18. Talk about your editing and revision process

I generally don’t write in a way where I do major revisions, I usually have a Very Specific Idea about the atmosphere and the intention I have for a scene, so it’s more about filling in gaps and fine-tuning something. I remember a while ago I had a foxskull fic where the emotional cohesion wasn’t working out, and air was like ‘I think it’d make more sense if there was conflict here’ & while they were right about that as a possible solution, and while I love conflict, I was like. no. I think what ended up happening was pushing the vibe to more extremes, like cautiously defusing an emotional bomb.

If I can, I like getting a pal who can read over and give notes on what works and what doesn’t. I like thorough notes on atmosphere and phrasing and pacing, and I need the positives to be pointed out so The Agonizing Process Of Being Edited is offset. Which is a pretty common experience of editing preference, I’d imagine. If I’m writing in isolation it’s easy for me to lose focus and motivation, but fortunately I’ve had friends who were willing to hype me up as I dragged my corpse over the finish line… there’s no way I would’ve finished night flowers without liz or april lol

I never like just one singular line so I’m gonna change it to ‘section’

Despite being explicitly told not to get involved, Shang Qinghua involves himself for a couple reasons, neither of them flattering.

Reason number one: jealousy.

Listen. It took years for Shang Qinghua to close the gap between him and Mobei Jun, to get them from an undefined relationship between strangers… to an undefined relationship between acquaintances. And that was fine. That was great. Who could ask for more, especially from someone like Mobei Jun?

Shen Qingqiu, apparently! In less than a day, fucking Shen Qingqiu swooped in from nowhere and usurped what Shang Qinghua had built over the better part of a decade! Who wouldn’t be bitter!! Who wouldn’t go mad!! Fuck!!

Reason number two: desperation.

I liked going all in on stupid bitter jealousy and resentment and then figuratively switching to the next powerpoint slide. I think I’m hysterical. In general, mo/shang is where some of my funniest writing is

The thing about being a blindingly competent genius with a very specific skillset is that everyone wants to use Han Sooyoung in completely inconsequential ways. It’s a waste. It’s overkill. It’s as insulting as buying a sword from a master craftsman and using it to chop vegetables.

this is buried in a vld gen fic which means hardly anyone would’ve seen it. I still really love lance describing voltron as ‘the cat-stack’ and it’s one of my favorite lines I’ve written for him even though I’ve for sure written much more overtly funny lines for him.

👖 Are you a planner, plantser, or pantser? Is it consistent?

Somewhere between a planner and a plantser? I tend to give myself a rough outline to work with, then add more and more to the story as the story grows from it.

🤔 What is the hardest part of writing fic?

Coming up with a title 😂 I mostly kid, it's actually finding a place to end it. The nature of fanfic means it can go on and on forever if you let it, so finding that good stopping point can be very difficult.

🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

A lot! I have so many ideas that I haven't written down yet! There's a knight/prince fantasy fairy tale au thing I've thought about so much but haven't even written a single smidge of an outline for yet!

💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?

In Boyfriend Parade, i head-cannon Ace's other boyfriend that's not part of the Sanji polycule as being Yamato. Sanji and Yamato get along really well, and have no problems sharing Ace with the other. Yamato sometimes tags along with Ace on their group dates too.

11. What fic was the most satisfying to finish writing?

Well assuming I can finish it before the year's out it'll probably be this Lana/Mia fic, because both of them as characters and their relationship is a lot of ground-up work from minimal canon, and I think I've managed to pull out some interesting threads from it. One of my fave genres of fic to write has always been expanding on characters who only get touched on in canon and I'm finding it very satisfying with Lana and Mia. Also I wanted to write some f/f.

26. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?

I'm going to say when I was writing Batestian Mimicry, which was my first fic of 2023 and also first AA fic, specifically the point when I realized I could make the whole story work so much better if I made Edgeworth, like, 25% more of an asshole. Writing a new character/universe/ship is always a little intimidating and that felt like the moment Edgeworth, Phoenix and Narumitsu generally started to click for me.

21. Share your favorite piece of dialogue

HM I love writing dialogue so a tough call. Probably this bit from Room Service

“Your money?” says Phoenix, guilty for only as long as it takes to remember the kind of car Edgeworth drives. “Jeeze. Thought we were on Scotland Yard’s dime—or, uh, shilling, or whatever they have here. You know, part of the investigation.” “What investigation? You and Maya are no longer missing. In fact, you keep insisting you never were.” Okay, now Edgeworth sounds properly irritated. “You also keep insisting that your unwitting participation in a blacksite pharmaceutical experiment was ‘not that big a deal’, and that being drugged and kidnapped—” “Hold it.” Phoenix spins around, lifting his hand to cut off Edgeworth’s rant before it reaches escape velocity. “Let’s not throw around the K word, alright? I told you, it was all a… a misunderstanding. Besides, technically we signed a contract.” “A contract?!” If Edgeworth were a cartoon, Phoenix imagines steam would be whistling out of his ears. “You can’t—that’s not—” He cuts himself off, taking a theatrical deep breath as he pinches the bridge of his nose. “Wright, sometimes I think your law degree must be written in crayon.” “Nah. Fingerpaint.” 

This fic in general was super fun and it was nice to reach a point where they could bounce off each other comfortably.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Youko from Twelve Kingdoms! She starts out as being a wishy-washy people pleaser who doesn't really stand up for her own values and is kind of a hypocrite (e.g. ignoring the unpopular girl in school even though she knows it's wrong, and then earnestly advising the girl to be less gloomy to fit in better/so people won't bully her etc), and then she went through a period of being a paranoid nihilistic jerk after a ton of Bad Shit happened to her—like y'know, being isekai'd and hunted by deadly demons who are specifically out to get her, almost being sold to a brothel, the discrimination she gets being an otherworlder etc—but ultimately she's like fuck that i refuse to give up on the goodness of people and stands firm when her values are tested

(also the ending of the rebellion arc is rad as hell. "I would have every person in Kei feel like a king [...] I would have them each be the master of their own domain, and this starts with the freedom to stand proudly, with their head held high, in front of anyone [no matter their rank]—as my First Edict, I hereby decree all forms of prostrations abolished")

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending? 

Answered here, but have another! Eris Willamette, from the obscure anime GEAR Fighter Dendoh, has an embarrassing (in her opinion) middle-name: Xena. Her parents are megafans of the show, and while she is fond of the show too, good luck getting her to admit it.

(the meta reason for this headcanon: Xena was used as a nickname for the dwarf planet Eris back when it didn’t have an official name yet)

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

Oozora Yuujin (Appmon)—hm. a lot of why i like him so much is a major spoiler, but there's just something delightfully unhinged when the Big Good of your cartoon asks a 13 year old kid if they're willing to give up their life for a friend, and implies that doing so is the pinnacle of their positive character development; to become the best version of themself, they must sacrifice their life to save a friend... and then the kid is just like "of course i'll die for my best pal! what, is that supposed to be a hard decision?"

Oda Shinichiro (2.43)—people who are passionate about something and know they'll never truly excel in/be the best at it is my kryptonite lol, so a volleyball enthusiast who is too short to play the way they wish they could play and only got this far with sheer love of the sport hits all my buttons! I also really like that he sees himself as fundamentally selfish, and while he's not entirely wrong about that, he's also the dependable heart of the team (I also like that he's feels selfish but would still go for his goals, even if he feels a bit guilty/ambivalent about it—"sorry, but go along with my selfish whims for a bit longer" indeed)

Youko (Twelve Kingdoms)—aside from all that i've said about her previously, i encountered the Twelve Kingdoms anime as a pre-teen. so a lot of the other magical adventures featuring female leads that i watched/was aware of at the time have romance as a central part of their character arcs, and it was really refreshing for baby ace me to see a cool female character whose character growth and adventure story isn't dependent on her romantic interest in a dude, but is instead about her becoming a braver, more compassionate person who is more willing to be true to herself. also i really like her light/minimal armor look in the rebellion arc lol

It takes some effort to force Zoro to stay fucking still. Zoro struggles under him, and Sanji practically straddles the man to keep him on the ice. Holding the front of Zoro’s jersey between white-knuckled fists, Sanji shakes him until Zoro meets his eyes directly. “Zoro,” Sanji starts, then swallows thickly. Tears prick in the corners of his eyes and he doesn’t even try to hide it, not with his hands occupied.

✄ what’s your editing process?

to some extent my editing process is a part of my writing process because, depending on how the fic is going, I usually do keysmashes or brackets for action throughout the draft so I have to go back and edit them to be real sentences rather than notes... although I doubt everyone would count that as editing. for the editing-editing part, my process is to see what friends are open to beta read and work through their notes; sometimes I'll highlight parts I'm not sure of or parts that I have multiple lines in mind for so I can get specific feedback.

The imposter’s beatific expression twists into contempt, and what gall! As if he has the right after such indecency! Yusuke is just about to relay all that indignation and more when a stark white wing bursts from his imposter’s back, soon weighed down by the chaotically marbled ink that oozes from between the feathers. The rest of him shortly follows this startling transformation, culminating into what could perhaps be described as the idea of a crane, far too ill-defined and approximate and wrong; no crane has a beak that curves so viciously, talons that gleam with such cruel intent. To confound the matter further, it’s pieced together by a grotesque cacophony of incongruent styles, impressionist and ink wash limbs attached to a cubist crest, its head styled in a repulsively nostalgic childlike scrawl.

I'm not really a visual person so I tend to struggle with visual descriptions and I usually make up for it by focusing on emotions and internal processes, so I was really proud of this :) but also because I'm not a visual person the way I experience this is very. wow! sounds pretty cool (not visualizing it at all)

The idea came from the ongoing thought "ways Sanji being an actual prince could affect the plot," and one of the answers was: Sanji and Usopp run into a royal who has the truth-truth fruit, so no one can tell her lies and anything she says becomes the truth. She takes a liking to Usopp, and says that he can't leave the island unless he marries a royal. Sanji mopes for a bit until he remembers that he qualifies as a royal, so the straw hats crash the wedding and Sanji marries Usopp instead

It's definitely not stalled out okay I'm totally gonna finish it one day soon just don't look at the last edit date it's gonna happen
