Hello! I'm the anon who asked you a while ago about pronouncing ll in Welsh (your explanation was very helpful, by the way - thank you!) Now I've encountered another part of Welsh that's challenging me: spelling mutations. The word "coch" will change to "goch", for example, and "bwyta" will change to "fwyta". Duolingo, unfortunately, doesn't really explain WHEN these mutations need to occur, only that they're a thing that happens. Do you have any resources where I can study these mutations, or can you explain basically why they happen? Diolch!

I like cheese (quesadillas my beloved <3) but bread is amazing too!! Especially if you make Dorito sandwiches; I hate the way Doritos taste nowadays but bread makes them taste how they used to XD

Hi, do you mind if I ask you a question about Welsh?

I'm teaching myself Welsh (with Duolingo mostly) and enjoying it immensely, but the one thing I can't figure out is why the first letter of some words changes. Some specific examples I've noticed are:

Cymru/Gymru

Bwyta/Fwyta

Tafarn/Dafarn

Parti/Barti

Can you possibly shed some light on this for me? Thanks in advance!!

Maybe it's how my brain's wired, combined with the language I'm learning, but I'm finding that Duolingo feels much like only half a solution at best.

Like, its okay at teaching stuff that would be on flashcards, but ... very much not so good at teaching the rules behind how things work.

I can join the dots for tegan -> teganau (toy -> toys), but I don't think that it's explained the why behind how bwrdd (table) sometimes becomes fwrdd (table), or dydd becomes ddydd, or bwyta becomes fwyta.

Maybe I'm expecting too much from what is obviously meant to be only part of how you learn, but goddamn it's annoying to get told you were WRONG on an exercise because the word that you learned and used correctly on previous exercises is spelt slightly differently in this one for no easily discernable reason.

I do, thankfully, have a document somewhere that explains the various grammar rules, but I need to try carve out time to sit down and read it and make little reminder cards or something 'til it sinks in.

I Can Eat Glass

I Can Eat Glass was a linguistic project documented on the early Web by then-Harvard student Ethan Mollick. The objective was to provide speakers with translations of the phrase "I can eat glass, it does not hurt me" from a wide variety of languages; the phrase was chosen because of its unorthodox nature. Mollick's original page disappeared in or about June 2004.

As Mollick explained, visitors to a foreign country have "an irresistible urge" to say something in that language, and whatever they say (a cited example being along the lines of "Where is the bathroom?") usually marks them as tourists immediately. Saying "I can eat glass, it does not hurt me", however, ensures that the speaker "will be viewed as an insane native, and treated with dignity and respect".
